Francis T. 'Frank' Berner, 75
Francis T. "Frank" Berner, 75, of West Bend, died Thursday, March 23, 2000, at the Samaritan Health Center.
He was born Feb. 16, 1925, in Chicago, Ill., to the late John and Mary (nee Meaney) Berner, and married Hannah M. McGuire on May 23, 1953, in Chicago.
He served with the U.S. Army in World War II from March 1943 until February 1946.
He was a former employee of Brink's Armored Car Service in Chicago, retiring in March 1983.
The couple moved to West Bend in April of 1985.
Survivors include his wife; six nephews and nieces, Agnes B. Canning of Villa Park, Ill., James McGuire of Evanston, Ill., Therese McGuire of Chicago, Ill., Kevin McGuire of Evanston, Ill., Bridget Nagai of Park Ridge, Ill. and Mary Pembroke of Park Ridge, Ill.; a very close cousin, Kevin Cleary of West Bend and the Cleary family; dear friends, the Egan Family of Chicago, Joe and Marion Ward, Dr. Jeff Smale, Dr. Robert Gibson, Sister Rosemary O'Brien and Florence A. Timm.
Preceding him in death were two brothers, John (Agnes) and Joseph.
He was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Church, the Fohl-Martin Post 483 of Allenton, St. Jude League, Chicago Teamster Local 725, Veterans of WWII-China/Burma and India Theater (CBI).
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 25, at 3 p.m. at the Phillip Funeral Home, of West Bend. Father Jeffrey Haines officiated, and interment followed in St. Lawrence Cemetery, St. Lawrence.
Memorials are appreciated to St. Frances Cabrini Church Building Fund or Vitas Innovative Hospice Care of Brookfield.

Dona Clare Becker, 67
Dona Clare Becker, nee Schlacks, 67, of West Bend, died Friday, March 24, 2000, at St. Joseph's Community Hospital.
She was born July 28, 1932, in Chicago, Ill., to the late Howard F. and Clare (nee Cronley) Schlacks, and grew up in the Chicago area.
After attending Trinity High School and Rosary College in River Forest, Ill., she taught at St. Francis of Rome School in Cicero, Ill.
On Feb. 11, 1956, she married John J. Becker at St. Edmund's Catholic Church in Oak Park Ill. Together they raised seven children and are the proud grandparents of 13.
These include Daniel Jude of Las Vegas, Nev.; Mary Clare (Louis) Conte and their children, Jacqlyn and Jenna of Littleton, Colo.; Judith Marie (Steven) Wagner and their children, Kathryn and Michael of Germantown; Sharon Therese (Alan) Bell and their sons, Patrick, Nicholas, Christopher and Perry of West Bend; Virginia Alice (Gregory) Starr and their children, April, Ryan and Eric of West Bend; John J. Jr. (Jane) and their children, Austin and Taylor Rose of West Bend; and Amy Maureen (Kenneth) Kohls of West Bend.
She is also survived by a sister, Rowena (the late Richard) Hohman of Virginia Beach, Va.; four brothers, Daniel (Carol) of Hanover Park, Ill., H. Paul (Nancy) of Oak Park, Ill., Robert (Colleen) of Wilmette, Ill. and William (Susan) of Bradenton, Fla.; 39 nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
Dona was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Christian Women's Confraternity, the St. Joseph's Community Hospital Auxiliary, the West Bend Woman's Club and the West Bend Country Club.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 28 at 6 p.m. at the Schmidt Funeral Home, West Bend, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 6:30 p.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, West bend. Fr. Jeffrey Haines will be the presider, and private burial will be Wednesday in Washington County Memorial park.
Visitation at the funeral home will be Tuesday from 1 to 5:45 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., or to the Post-Polio Resource Group of Southeastern Wisconsin would be appreciated.

Marvel E. Kurtz, 94
Marvel Elisabeth Kurtz, nee Fischer, of Jackson, died Monday, March 27, 2000, at St. Joseph's Community Hospital, West Bend, at the age of 94.
She was born Feb. 4, 1906, in the town of Port Washington in the settlement known as the Norwegian Community, to the late Charles and Nettie Fischer.
She graduated from Maple Grove Public School, Port Washington High School and Milwaukee Normal School.
She taught school in the town of Saukville for a year, followed by nine years in the old Norwegian Settlement school.
After her marriage to Clarence Kurtz on May 25, 1935, in Saukville, the couple lived in Saukville for four years and in 1939 moved to Jackson where they have since resided.
She had been a member of Christ Lutheran Church since 1939, and belonged to and was active in the Women's Missionary Society and the Lutheran Church Women.
Survivors include her husband; a sister, Edna Seyfert; a sister-in-law, Elda Miller; two brothers-in-law, Earl and Irwin Kurtz; nieces nephews; other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were twin brothers, Harvey and Walter Fischer, and a sister, Adell Liesner.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 31, at 4 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, Highway 60, Jackson.
Visitation at the church only will be Friday from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m.
Interment will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Cedar Creek Road, Jackson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the charity of the donor's choice.
The Schmidt Funeral Home, Jackson, is assisting the family.

Anna Mae Black, 74
Anna Mae Black, nee Lechner, 74, of Hartford, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, March 26, 2000, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Oct. 3, 1925, in Hartford, to the late John and Julia (nee Hefter) Lechner, and married Howard Black on June 22, 1946, at St. Kilian's Parsonage.
She was a beautician in Hartford prior to taking over the family florist business.
Anna Mae and Howard owned and operated Black's Flower Shop for more than 50 years.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Thomas, Mark (Mary) and Bruce (Tracie), all of Hartford; a daughter, Mary Lee (Jim) Rieley of London, England; nine grandchildren, Kim, Betsy, Jeff, Melissa, Jared, Carly, Stephanie, Quentin and Whitney; a sister, Charlene (Bernard) Schellinger of Hartford; a brother, John Jr. "Whitey" Lechner of Hartford; sisters-in-law, Ann Lechner of Hartford and Verna Lechner of Slinger; special friends, Claude and Lucille Lechner; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were two brothers, Glen "Butch" and Roy, and two sisters, Virginia Gruenhagen and Emily Mueller.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, March 31, at 11 a.m. at St. Kilian's Church, Hartford. Father Michael Petrie will officiate, and interment will be in St. Kilian's Cemetery.
The family will greet relatives and friends at the Shimon Funeral Home, Hartford, on Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m., with a prayer vigil at 8:30 p.m.
Memorials to St. Kilian's Building Fund are appreciated.

James P. McCurdy, 65
James P. McCurdy, 65, of Hartwell, Ga., formerly of Shorewood and Allenton, died Friday, March 24, 2000, in Hartwell, after a long and courageous battled with a brain disease.
He was born March 18, 1935, to the late Philip and Joyce (Kasuba) McCurdy.
In 1958 he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and became a meteorologist for the state government. Later he was a systems analyst for IBM.
On April 8, 1961, he married Jacquelyn Adamson. During their marriage they had four children, Steven of Shorewood, Michael (Kelly) of West Bend, Elizabeth (Steven) Jankowski of Allenton and Kathryn (Daniel) O'Brien of Hudson.
On Nov. 9, 1990, he married Helen Gulker and they resided in Hartwell until his death.
He is deeply missed by his wife, Helen; and his beloved greyhound, Sailor. He is also very dearly missed by his sister, Kay (Clayton) Hahn of Milwaukee; his loving children, their spouses and his four grandchildren, Thomas and Kaitlyn McCurdy and Timothy and Andrew Jankowski.
Jim is further survived by his former wife, Jackie and many, many other relatives and friends.
Jim was a devote Badgers and Packers fan and was also an avid fisherman and loved boating, horseback riding, crafts, cooking and music.
For many years he sang in his church choirs in Milwaukee and Kewaskum and was known for his beautiful tenor voice.
He was also well known for his tremendous sense of humor, his love of potato chips and cashews and his practical jokes.
A private family ceremony will be held in celebration of Jim 's life..

Matthew D. Massoglia, 28
Matthew D. Massoglia, 28, of St. Paul, Minn., died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at Fairview University Hospital, Minneapolis.
Matt was born Sept. 6, 1971, in Stevens Point, to Dennis and Barbara (Kiefer) Massoglia.
He attended St. Stephen Grade School and graduated in 1990 from Pacelli High School.
At Pacelli, he was a member of the band and competed in football, cross country, tennis and wrestling. As a wrestler, he was a two-time state qualifier, placing fifth at 119 pounds as a junior.
Matt graduated from Carlton School of Management at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities in 1995.
For the past four years, he worked in sales for Mid-America Business Systems in Minneapolis.
He enjoyed downhill and water skiing and was a former member of the Wisconsin Rapids Aqua Skiers Water Ski Show Team.
Matt was the recipient of a heart transplant on May 10, 1999.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Mark of Wisconsin Rapids and Michael of Minneapolis; his maternal grandmother, Dolores Kiefer of Slinger; several aunts and uncles; and numerous cousins and friends.
Preceding him in death were his paternal grandparents, John and Blanche Massoglia, and maternal grandfather, Andrew Kiefer.
A funeral Mass was held Saturday, March 18, at St. Stephen Catholic Church, Stevens Point. Rev. Dan Kozlowski officiated, and burial will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established to benefit organ donation.
