Paul W. Bast, 85
Paul W. Bast, 85, of West Bend, passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2000,
He was born Dec. 5, 1914, on the Bast Family Centennial Farm near Rockfield, town of Germantown, and was preceded in death by his parents, Paul J. and Bertha (nee Mantz) Bast.
Paul is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Agnes L. (nee Hoelz). They were married in Germantown on Oct. 26, 1940.
He is also survived by his children, Thomas R. (Carol) Bast of West Bend, Susan L. (Roger) Winninghoff of Oshkosh, David S. (Pamela) Bast of West Bend and Jean L. Bast of White Bear Lake, Minn.; his six grandchildren, Tom (Jenny) Winninghoff, Amy Winninghoff, Debbie (Peter) Prahl, Jeff (Cheryl) Bast, Jacob (Laura) Bast and Katie Bast, and a great-granddaughter, Alina Prahl.
He is further survived by his three sisters, Louise Stokes of Lexington, Ky., Alice Huebner of Madison and Jean (Jorge) Bustamante of El Salvador, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Reuben (Dorothy) Hoelz; and two sisters-in-law, Linda (William) Sponholz and Dorothy Hoelz.
Preceding him in death were three brothers-in-law, Clarence Hoelz, Frederick Huebner and Stanley Stokes.
Paul graduated in 1932 from West Bend High School and from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1937 where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Upon graduation he was employed by the First National Bank of West Bend, where he served West Bend and Washington County for 43 years. At the time of his retirement on Dec. 31, 1979, he was president of the bank.
His career was interrupted in 1943 when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Upon graduation from Navy Supply Corps School at Harvard University, he received his orders to the destroyer, USS Schroeder, DD501. He served as the ships's supply officer until the end of the war achieving the rank of Lieutenant JG.
Very active in his community, Paul was a member of Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church, the West Bend Country Club, the West Bend Noon Rotary Club and served numerous other organizations in West Bend and Washington County.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, April 16 at 7 p.m. at Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church, West Bend, with Rev. William Dushek officiating. A private burial will take place Monday.
Visitation at the church only will be on Sunday from 4 to 6:45 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials to the Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church or the Cedar Lake Foundation.
The Schmidt Funeral Home, West Bend, is serving the family.

Marilee I. Groom, 71
A Mass of Christian burial was held on Monday, April 10 at Our Lady Queen of the Universe in Woodruff for Marilee I. Groom, 71, who died on April 7, 2000. Burial was at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Woodruff. The Bolger Funeral Home of Minoqua assisted the family with arrangements.
Mrs. Groom was born May 21, 1928 in Woodruff, the daughter of Michael and Lilah (nee Faulkner) Radey. She married Paul Groom on June 19, 1948 at St. Patrick’s Church in Minoqua. She spent 11 years living in Mequon with her husband and worked with him at World Book Educational Products. She was most recently working as a salesperson at Stroenings Shop for Children and Little Darlin’s.
Survivors include: daughters Sherry Sommers of Sturgeon Bay and Susan (Robert) Thierfelde of Cedarburg; sons Michael (Jackie) Groom of Grafton and Thomas (Heidi) Groom of Eden Prairie, Minn.; grandchildren Kelly, Scott, Jonathan and Andrew Sommers, Jenny Groom, Derrick and Morgan Meister, Jason, Ryan and Tyler Thierfelder and Jacob and Emma Groom; sister Sally (Bob) Knapstein of Woodruff; and aunt Sue Hagen, Woodruff.
She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Groom; son-in-law, John Sommers; uncle, Webb Hagen; and her parents, Mike and Lilah Radey.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Dr. Kate Lakeland Hospice.

Cindy Marie Milbrath, 33
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Community United Methodist Church in Cedarburg for Cindy Marie Milbrath, 33, who died on April 10, 2000. after a seven-year battle with breast cancer.
Visitation will be today from 4-7 p.m. at Mueller Funeral Home , Grafton, and 10:30-11:30 a.m. on Friday at the church. Rev. Pete Peterson will officiate at the ceremony.
Ms. Milbrath was born June 15, 1966 in Milwaukee, daughter of Charles and Susan (nee Haag) Milbrath. She graduated from Ripon High School in 1984 and worked as an inspector at Exacto Spring Corp. in Grafton for 11 years.
Survivors include: father Charles Milbrath of Denver, Colo.; mother Susan (Lynn) Rasske of Beaver Dam; brother Charles Milbrath Jr of Denver, Colo.; sisters Christine Milbrath of Beaver Dam and Cathleen (Kevin) Laufenberg of Fredonia; grandmother Dorothy Gross of Menomonee Falls; nephew Cory Laufenberg; nieces Stephanie Lentz and Danielle Kuehl of Menomonee Falls; step-brothers Mark Rasske of Pleasant Prairie and Adam Rasske of Oshkosh.
Further survived by aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Shirley E. Steinbach, 76
Funeral services will be held this evening for Shirley E. Steinbach, 76, of Cedarburg, who died April 11, 2000.
Visitation will be at Mueller Funeral Home, Cedarburg, from 4 p.m., with the service set for 6:30 p.m., to be led by Rev. Pete Peterson. Burial will be at Pinelawn Cemetery, Milwaukee.
Mrs. Steinbach was born April 27, 1923 in Shorewood, daughter of Paul and Bertha (nee Krueger) Schlaitzer. She married Benjamin Steinbach on March 18, 1942.
Mrs. Steinbach was a homemaker, and belonged to the VFW Ladies Auxilliary in Cedarburg.
She is survived by her husband, Benjamin Steinbach of Cedarburg; son Benjamin Steinbach of Hartford; dauther Diane (Donald) Rode of Milwaukee; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Ted Ballman, 84
Ted Ballman, 84, of West Bend, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000.
He was born April 9, 1916.
He was the beloved husband of Anne (nee Seidl); dear father of the late Alice Rinka and Diane (Bob) Michal; grandfather of Wendy (David) Bartelt, Janet (Jim) Gorenflo, Kimberly Hagelbarger and Jodi (Guy) Clesen; great-grandfather of Gage Bartelt and Nathan Bartelt; brother of Magdalena Burghardt, Joseph (the late Marion), the late Herman, the late Raymond, Victor (the late Julia), Theresa (the late Gene) Koehler; brother-in-law of Helen ballman and Theresa (the late Kenneth) Hitesman. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Ted retired from Allis Chalmers in 1978 after 41 years of service.
He was proud to have served his country during World War II with the U.S. Navy, and was a member of West Bend VFW Post 1393.
Ted loved family and traveling.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, April 14 at 11 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church, West Bend.
No flowers please; memorials to the family are appreciated.
For those unable to attend the service, an open house will be held at Ted and Anne's home, 527 North St., West Bend, on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Church and Chapel Funeral Service, Milwaukee, is serving the family.

Gloria E. Hedges-Otto, 69
Gloria E. Hedges-Otto, nee Ingram, of West Bend, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at Hartford Memorial Hospital, Hartford, at the age of 69.
She was born April 30, 1930, in Illinois, and married James G. Hedges in July, 1949 in Missouri. He passed away Oct. 10, 1988. She later married Harvey Otto on May 17, 1997, at the Samaritan Health Center, West Bend. He preceded her in death on Dec. 20, 1999.
She was a member of St. Lucas Lutheran Church, Kewaskum.
Survivors include a son, James G. (Catherine) Hedges Jr. of Hartford; two granddaughters, Jennifer and Gina; a brother, Neal (Betty) Davis of Crystal Lake, Ill.; a sister, Diana Espoe of Peoria, Ill.; other relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Private family services were held.
The Shimon Funeral Home, Hartford, assisted the family.

Sharon A. Schacht, 56
Sharon A. Schacht, a lifelong resident of West Bend, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at St. Joseph's Community Hospital, at the age of 56.
She was born Oct. 29, 1943, in West Bend, to the late Lester and Bernice (nee Averill) Schacht.
Sharon was a loving aunt to her nieces and nephews, all of whom she enjoyed greatly.
Survivors include two brothers, Donald (Carol) of West Bend and Harold (Jeanne) of Milwaukee; a sister, Peggy (Norm) Schmidt of Grafton; nieces and nephews, Sue (Dennis) Schmuhl, Patti (Bill) Starett, Jodi (Bill) Wiesneski, Debbie Schacht, Kevin (Corrine) Schmidt, Tami Jo (Marty) Lewandowski, Jay (Cathy) Schmidt, Staci (Steve) Cramer and Megan (Tim) Kapelan; 18 great-nieces and nephews; two aunts, Alice Schacht and Vera Schacht; an uncle, Vincent Averill; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, April 14, at 7 p.m. at the Schmidt Funeral Home, West Bend, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 7:30 p.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, West Bend. Rev. Jeffrey Haines will be the presider and inurnment will be in Holy Angels Cemetery at a later date.
Visitation at the funeral home will be Friday from 5 to 6:45 p.m.

James H. 'Jim' Sullivan, 83
James H. "Jim" Sullivan, 83, of West Bend, formerly of Milwaukee, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at the Cedar Lake Home Campus.
He was born May 30, 1916, in Milwaukee, and married Ruth M. Putz on April 13, 1945, in Los Angeles, Calif.
He was the beloved husband of Ruth, and dear father of Patricia "Trish" Sullivan of Milwaukee and James P. (Sue) of Toccoa, Ga. He is further survived by other relatives and friends.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and later in the Korean Conflict.
Jim was very active in the Boy Scouts of America, and had been employed at Marine National Bank Exchange, Milwaukee, for over 43 years, retiring in 1978.
A private service was held Wednesday, April 12.
Memorials to the Milwaukee County Council, Boy Scouts of America, or Cedar Lake Home Campus are appreciated.
The Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend assisted the family.
