John W. Drydyk
Former Cedarburg resident John W. Drydyk died April 20, 2000 in Fort Myers Beach, Fla. at the age of 87.
A memorial service will be held May 15 at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church, Cedarburg. It will be followed by a luncheon in the church hall.
By all accounts, Mr. Drydyk was a very inventive person. He built his first airplane in the basement of his house when he was 18 years old, and continued his love of aviation by instructing pilots during World War II at Horlick Field in Racine. He continued to fly and instruct pilots well into the 1950s.
With only an eighth-grade education from St. Steven’s School in Milwaukee, Mr. Drydyk started working as a broom boy at Meta-Mold in West Allis in 1931.
When the company (which eventually became known as Amcast) relocated to Cedarburg, he followed and worked until retiring in 1975.
While at Meta-Mold, Mr. Drydyk invented the auto ladle, a system for automatically pouring molten metal.
Mr. Drydyk was also an avid vegetable gardener throughout his life.
While living in Cedarburg, he was a member of St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church and a passive member of the Cedarburg Fire Department.
Family members say he loved riding his bike, averaging 10 miles a day until January, when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Mr. Drydyk was the husband of Evelyn (nee Griffin) Demerath, and father of Susan (Dennis) Bartelt, Kathleen (Roger) Behling, John P. (Connie) Drydyk and Steven (Joan) Drydyk. Mr. Drydyk is also survived by grandchildren Dennis (Mary) Bartelt, Scott (Sue) Bartelt, Laura (Brian) Inman, Jennifer (Donald) Bublitz, Deanna Behling, Nicholas Behling, Karen Drydyk, Travis Salsig and Brandon Drydyk; brother Leonard Drydyk and sister Loretta Ceille; nieces, nephews, in-laws, other relatives and friends.
Mr. Drydyk was preceded in death by his first wife, Bernice (nee Anderson) Drydyk in 1968.
