Marion R. Stern, 72
Visitation will be today from 4-7 p.m. at Mueller Funeral Home in Grafton, followed by a 7:30 p.m. funeral Mass at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Grafton for retired Grafton businesswoman Marion R. Stern (nee Mohr), 72, who died May 28, 2000. Private burial will be held on Friday. Fr. Michael Barrett will officiate.
Mrs. Stern was born Jan. 13, 1928 in Fond du Lac. She married Erwin A. Stern on May 30, 1963, and moved to Grafton where they raised their family.
She was a member of the Stern family that operated IGA and Sentry food stores in Grafton for over 60 years. The stores were noted for their pioneering use of advancing technology in the grocery business. They were among the first in the state to use refrigeration and water misting of fresh produce; selling frozen foods, self-service meat and hot deli items; and the use of electronic price scanning and electronic discount cards. Marion and Erwin Stern were honored by the Wisconsin Grocers Association for innovative merchandising.
Coupled with this use of technology was the solid "mom and pop" service to customers, a tradition long established by Marion's mother-in-law, Marie Stern. In the 1970s, 80s and 90s, Marion was the personification of that service tradition. After her retirement in 1993, family members noted she often said that she did not miss the day-to-day operation of the store, but she did miss her contact with customers. She used the terms customers and friends interchangeably.
Her working career started in Fond du Lac where she was employed as telephone operator while still in high school. She worked in various capacities for Wisconsin Bell for almost 20 years, up to the time of the birth of her first child.
She was a long-time Green Bay Packer fan. She had season tickets and saw hundreds of games including the "Ice Bowl" and world championship games, but none was more important to her than the one in 1959 when she met her future husband, Erwin Stern.
After her retirement, she became interested in genealogy. She was able to trace some of her ancestors through Canada and back to France during the time of Joan of Arc. Much of her last years was spent doing this research, which included travel to research centers and homelands of ancestors.
Survivors include: husband Erwin; sons James (Margaret) Stern of Grafton and Brian (Amy) Stern of Rochester, Minn.; daughters Carla of Chicago and Julie (Patrick) Jankowski of Grafton; three granddaughters Ashley, Heather and Leanna; sisters Helen Swantz and Jeanette Burnett, both of Fond du Lac; brother David (Lori) Mohr of Fond du Lac; and brothers-in-law Joseph (Betty) Stern of Cedarburg and Lou (Louise) Stern of Detroit; and sisters-in-law Alice Dickmann of Grafton and Marilyn (James) Gardener of Bloomington, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Hazel Mohr of Fond du Lac, her parents-in-law, Peter and Marie Stern of Grafton, and her brothers-in-law Howard Burnett, Addison Swantz and Jerome Dickmann.
In lieu of Flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. Joseph's School, Grafton or the American Cancer Society.
