Mark J. Cornell
Mark J. Cornell, 46, Green Bay, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2002. The son of the late Hubert and Mabel Grady Cornell was born in the Town of Howard on June 27, 1955. He attended school in Green Bay and the Town of Howard. He is survived by four brothers and sister-in-laws, Ron and Marianne Cornell of Seymour, Randy and Karen Cornell of Green Bay, Gary and Yvonne Cornell of Howard, Lee and Lynn Cornell of De Pere; seven sisters and brothers-in-law, Tina and Charles Christensen of Howard, Mercedes and Dick Cramer of Green Bay, Cleo and Merlin Wallenfang of Green Bay, Rosemary and Don Schwartz of Crivitz, Ann and Don Benedict of Howard, Debbie and Mike Kemp of Suamico, Bonnie Vander Bloomen of Sobieski; many nieces and nephews. Mark was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Friends may call at WEST MASON MALCORE Funeral Home, 1530 West Mason Street, from 10 a.m. Monday until the time of the memorial service. Memorial services Monday 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Richard Shafer officiating. Burial in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.

Melvin W. Buchholz
Melvin W. Buchholz, 77, Green Bay, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at home in his sleep. He was born Jan. 1, 1925, in the Township of Underhill to the late Ernest and Dora Knaack Buchholz. In 1951, Melvin marred Harriet Giese. She preceded him in death in December 1981. On April 5, 1986, Melvin married Beatrice Jaeger Schuyler in Green Bay at Redeemer Lutheran Church. He worked for 30 years at Engebos & Sons Sheet Metal, and later became one of the original owners of Foreman Heating and Ventilating. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his sons and brothers, and for years he trained dogs. Melvin was a member of both the Packerland Kennel Club and the Nicolet German Shepherd Dog Club. Following retirement, he enjoyed spending time traveling, working in his garden, especially growing potatoes. From 1950 to 1952, Melvin was an Army Medic during the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Beatrice; three sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Carroll Buchholz, Steven and Paula Buchholz, all of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; Rodney and Mary Buchholz, Green Bay; a daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Mike Novotny, Huntington Beach, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Joe and Jeff Buchholz, Mark and John Buchholz, Maria, Anna and Elizabeth Buchholz, Elizabeth and Benjamin Novotny; his stepchildren and their spouses, Deborah Schuyler, Victoria Peterson, both of Green Bay; Tracy and Mike Brachmann, Menomonee Falls; Kimberly and Terry Tyler, Green Bay; his step-grandchildren, KC and Koko Neumeyer, Jessica, Erin and Jamie Peterson, Mitchell and Nicholas Brachmann; Alyssa Beyer; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Gertrude 'Gerti' Christiansen, Shirley and Lee Zaddack, all of Green Bay; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Harley and Ruth Buchholz, Green Bay; Ernest and Ruby Buchholz, Gillett; Le Roy and Naomi Buchholz, Green Bay; Alan and Mary Buchholz, Big Bend; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Harriet; a sister, Irene Larson; and a brother-in-law, Ken Christiansen. Friends may call at Blaney Funeral Home, 1521 Shawano Ave., from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday. Friends may also call at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 210 S. Oneida St., from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday. The Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Rev. John Poppe officiating. Burial will be in Emmanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery in Gillett. The family of Melvin W. Buchholz would like to extend a special word of thanks to Dr. Luke Warpinski and the staff of Unity Hospice, especially Linda, Lynn and Judy.

Dwight A. ‘Brick’ Brainard
Dwight A. 'Brick' Brainard, 97, Green Bay, died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at his home. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Lyndahl Funeral Home, Lombardi Avenue at Ridge Road. Visitation will continue after 10 a.m. Monday at First Assembly of God Church, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. with the Revs. Paul Hamelink and Jerry Lewin officiating. Interment in Nicolet Memorial Gardens.

Thomas E. Braatz
Thomas E. Braatz, 80, Green Bay, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, at a local hospital. He was born Feb. 26, 1921, to the late Albert and Lydia Strike Braatz in Friendship and grew up in the Waupaca area. He served in the South Pacific in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. On May 25, 1941, he married the former Evelyn Hintz; she preceded him in death Dec. 18, 1998. Thomas was employed by the F. Hurlbut Co. for 37 years, retiring in 1983. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Sharon Braatz and T. Lee and Carol Braatz, all of Green Bay, and Wayne and Barbara Braatz, Abrams; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rosanne and Rick Scott, Superior, and Wendy and Dennis Kolbusz, Madison; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Rosalie Boggs, Schofield, and Jeannie Higgins, Marshfield. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two infant grandchildren; two brothers, Herbert and Eugene; and five sisters, Mickey, Rubie, Floy, Fern and Isabelle. Friends may call Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Lyndahl Funeral Home, Lombardi Avenue and Ridge Road. Visitation will continue after 9:30 a.m. Monday at First Assembly of God Church, Shawano Avenue and Fisk Street, where the funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Jerry Lewin officiating. Burial will be in the Underhill Cemetery. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at San Luis Medical & Rehab Center for the quality care that was given to Thomas during his final weeks.

Howard Boyea
Howard Boyea, 79, of De Pere, died peacefully, surrounded by his family late Wednesday evening, Feb. 6, 2002 at the home of his son, Gene. The son of the late Fred and Antoinette DeBoth Boyea was born Oct. 14, 1922, in De Pere. On Nov. 2, 1963, he married the former Janet Vonckx who preceded him in death on March 22, 1985. Howard had been a truck driver with Green Bay-Chicago Lines prior to his retirement in 1985. He enjoyed raising chickens, gardening, dog sitting Tiffer, and spending time with his friends at Kroll’s West. He was an exceptional person who touched many lives and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Survivors include his six children and their spouses, Barbara Erickson, Paris, France, John Erickson and Paul Gower, New York, Mary Lou and Paul Allen, De Pere, Steve and Linda Erickson, De Pere, Gene and Eve Boyea, Green Bay, Jim and Robin Boyea, Oneida, and special daughter-in-law, Kathy Peot, Colorado Springs. Also nine grandchildren, Mara, Stephen, Tyler, Nicholas, Jacob, Talia, Tami, Mike, and Keri; one brother, Jim and Arlene Boyea, Seymour; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two grandsons, Jason and Chad; a son-in-law, Robert Maidi; and a sister, Beatrice Mohr. Friends may call at Ryan Funeral Home, 305 North Tenth Street, De Pere from 4 to 9 p.m. today Friday and after 8:30 a.m. Saturday until the funeral procession leaves for church. Parish Prayer Service will be held at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Suburban Drive at Lourdes Avenue, De Pere. Entombment in Allouez Mausoleum. A memorial fund has been established. The Boyea family extend a special thank you to Karla and Unity Hospice for their care and support.

Helen M. Bertrand
Helen M. Bertrand, 87, Village of Howard, passed away on Wednesday, March 27th 2002. The former Helen Anderson was born on November 6, 1914, in St. Croix Falls, WI, to the late Albin John and Nellie Dresser Anderson. On May 3, 1941 she married Bernard James Bertrand in Madison. He preceded her in death on October 12, 1979. She has been a resident of the area for a long time. Helen was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Howard, and the Republican Women of Brown County. She was a volunteer as a Reading Buddy; involved in many church activities and volunteered at the Howard library. She was also noted for her special Christmas candy, making it for her family and friends. She will be sadly missed by her family and grandchildren. She is survived by her sons, Thomas P. and Debbie Bertrand, Delavan, and Stephen D. and Julie Bertrand, Howard; grandchildren, Michael and Amy; stepgrandchildren, Angie and Jenna; a stepgreat-grandson, Owen. Further survived by many friends. Helen was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Bernard. The family will receive friends at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 2597 Glendale Ave., Howard, today from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial 11:30 a.m. today at the church with Rev. Mrs. Clayton Betty Baeten
Mrs. Clayton Betty Baeten, 72, Green Bay, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at home after a long battle with cancer. Born July 7, 1929, she is the daughter of the late Hector and Mamye Nockerts Banta. She married Clayton Baeten July 17, 1948, and he preceded her in death July 12, 1979. The couple owned and operated a Dairy Farm on Route #2 in the Town of Humboldt for many years. Betty enjoyed bingo, darts, and cards. She is survived by three children and spouses, Kathy and Harold 'Butch' Beyer of New Franken, Ron and Sue Baeten and Mary Kaye Baeten, all of Green Bay; eight grandchildren, Chris Cooper, Anne Jeff Lamers, Carol Beyer, Jim Beyer and his fiancée Kristin Glime, Pete Baeten and fiancée Christine Moureau, Stacy Baeten, Gina Chad Kurowski, and Gregg Baeten; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Corrine and Norm Pitsch of Appleton, Joyce and Jim Murray of Green Bay; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard and Pat Banta of Meridian, Miss., Edward 'Jim' and Lorraine Banta of Green Bay; two sisters-in-law, Rita Banta of Green Bay, Marilyn Banta of Wichita, Kan.; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clayton; infant son, Joseph; granddaughter Jean Beyer; two brothers, Merrill 'Bud' and Eugene Banta; one sister-in-law, Arliss Banta. Visitation at MALCORE FUNERAL HOME, University Avenue at Baird Street, from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Parish wake service 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Wednesday’s visitation will continue at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, 5930 Humboldt Road, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral. Funeral 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas the Apostle with the Rev. Dean Dombroski and the Rev. Earl Schuh officiating. Burial at Allouez Catholic Cemetery. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Mary Meiers, Dr. James McGovern, Kelly Assisted Living; especially Carol and Char, Unity Hospice, and most of all Mary Kaye Baeten for all of the care given to Betty at this difficult time.

Robert C. Athey
Robert C. Athey, 85, Howard, passed away unexpectedly at home on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002. Mr. Athey was born Aug. 7, 1916, in Duck Creek to the late William and Mary Moes Athey. He had been a lifetime resident of Howard. He worked as an auto mechanic and owned and operated Bob’s Garage starting in business in 1946 until 1980. He then sold his business to his son Gary. In 1939 he married Clara Winkler at St. John the Baptist Church, Howard. She preceded him in death on Jan. 30, 1985. Survivors include his sons, Gary Virginia Athey, Black Creek, Bruce and special friend, Kathy, Greenville, Mich.; two grandsons, Daniel Brenda Athey, Scott Misty Athey; five great-grandchildren, Kimberly, David, Jenna, Tyler and Brandon; a very special friend, Lois Wallingford; two sisters, Thelma Wolfe, Athelstane, Florence Clyde Steeno, Green Bay; sister-in-law, Barbara Athey, Suamico. Further survived by nieces, nephews and friends. Mr. Athey was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth Sam Wolfe, Evelyn Al Kollath, Leona Lloyd Cayer, and one brother-in-law, Raphel Wolfe. The family will receive friends at the Pfotenhauer Funeral Home West, 1145 Cardinal Lane, Howard, Today Monday, Feb. 4, from 4 until 8 p.m. Visitation continues on Tuesday at the funeral home from 10 until 11 a.m. Funeral 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial in Fort Howard Memorial Park. Harold J. Pfotenhauer, Funeral Director. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Robert’s name, c/o 1145 Cardinal Lane, Green Bay, WI 54313.
