Adeline B. Puestow
Adeline B. Puestow, nee Wickert, 93, of West Bend and Mayville, died Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2000, at St. Joseph's Community Hospital, West Bend.
She was born Feb. 18, 1907, in the town of Polk, to the late Herman and Ida (nee Hetzel) Wickert, and married Fred Puestow on Sept. 3, 1924.

Her husband passed away on Nov. 4, 1963.

Adeline lived in the West Bend area for most of her life, was a resident of Little Cedar Lake for 40 years, and has lived near her daughter in Mayville for the past several years.

She was employed at The West Bend Co. for 26 years, retiring in 1969.

Adeline was a life-long member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, West Bend, and did much volunteer work for the Bethesda Lutheran Home in Watertown. She was also a member of The West Bend Co. 25-Year Club and the Mayville Senior Center.

Survivors include a daughter, Pearl Christian of Mayville; four grandchildren, Karen (Jerold) Schraufnagel and Bruce (Beverly) Christian, both of Mayville, Brenda Christian of Juneau and Lisa Christian of Oakfield; seven great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; a sister, Esther Shirley of West Bend; a sister-in-law, Bernice Parman of Fond du Lac; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were three sisters, Edna Puestow, Mildred Walrabenstein and Emily Becker, and a brother, Franklin.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Oct. 20, at 2 p.m. at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, West Bend.

Rev. George Mumm will officiate, and burial will follow in Washington County Memorial Park, West Bend.

Visitation at the church only will be Friday from noon until the time of services.

Memorials to the Bethesda Lutheran Home, Watertown are appreciated.

The Myrhum-Patten Funeral Home, West Bend, is serving the family.

Harold "Whitey" Kohn
Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Myrhum-Patten Funeral Home, West Bend, for Harold "Whitey" Kohn, 61, of West Bend, who died Oct. 12, 2000. Rev. George Jorenby of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Saukville, officiated at the ceremony. Burial was held at Saukville Union Cemetery on Wednesday.
He was born on July 7, 1939 at home in Hartland to the late Carl and Hazel (nee Dopke) Kohn. He served in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne Division and he was employed as a mason and cement finisher for Bonness Construction (also known as Highway Pavers) and later Payne & Dolan, Inc. in Milwaukee. He loved baseball and played in high school and in the Land O Lakes League for many years.

Survivors include: children Tonya Kohn-Verbanac and Ryan Kohn; grandchildren Jesse Verbanac and Paige Verbanac; sister, Sandy (Red) Habersetzer, a brother, nieces, nephews, two great-nieces, other relatives and friends.

Further survived by: Arlene Neuy, Jesse Verbanac, Lonna Kohn, Alois and Naomi Schladweiler.

He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Kohn, his mother, Hazel Kohn-Neumeyer (nee Dopke) and a brother, Roy Kohn.

Edward C. Kalupa
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 11:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Plymouth for Edward C. Kalupa, 84, who died on Oct. 13, 2000. Rev. Dennis Van Beek will officiate at the ceremony, with arrangements handled by Suchon Funeral Home, Plymouth. Visitation will be held at the Suchon Funeral Home tonight at 7:30 p.m. and tomorrow from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Cremation will follow the services and private family inurnment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Sheboygan Falls.
Mr. Kalupa was born Oct. 5, 1916 in Berlin, son of Frank Jr. and Laura (Sweda) Kalupa. He married Annabelle Kallas in 1937 and lived in Sheboygan Falls with their 4 children. For the last 12 years he has lived in Plymouth with his current wife Irene Ebenreiter, who he married on March 17, 1988.

He moved away from home during the eighth grade to work for neighborhood farmers. At age 19 he worked in the pottery department of the Kohler Company for over 19 years. During this period he played a major role in the organization of Local 833 of the United Automobile Workers. Local 833 replaced the company sponsored Kohler Workers Association, representing most hourly employees of the company. He also played a leadership role in the bitter, historic six-year labor strike against the Kohler Co. during the 1950s.

As part of the strike settlement in 1962, the Kohler Co. was ordered to pay striking employees $4.5 million for back pay and pension credits. Mr. Kalupa was one of only 28 striking employees who were excluded from that settlement.

At age 40, he changed careers and became a journeyman electrician after attending 6 years of night school. He worked for several electrical contractors based in Milwaukee for over 10 years and contractors based in Sheboygan for 14 years. During this period he played a role in the creation of two union sponsored pension funds for the journeyman electricians.

He was a longtime member of the Sheboygan County Deputies Association and the Sheboygan County Historical Association. He belonged to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Plymouth.

Survivors include: wife Irene Kalupa of Plymouth; daughters Beverly (Frank) La Valle of Hanover Park, Ill., Karen (Paul) Van Treeck of Des Moines, Iowa; sons Edward J. (Sherrill) Kalupa of San Dimas, Calif., Anthony (Linda) Kalupa of Grafton; stepson Dennis (Janet) Janisse of Sheboygan; grandchildren Joel Hansen of Aurora, Colo., Lisa Hansen of Los Angeles, Calif., Cheryl (Sven) Pole of Lackspur, Calif., Michael (Pam) Van Treeck of Batavia, Ill., Patrick Van Treeck of Sacramento, Calif., Daniel Van Treeck of Hollywood, Calif., Michele (Chris) Lukes of Little Chute, Kimberly Kalupa of Rockville, Md. and Taylor Kalupa of San Dimas, Calif.; great-grandchildren Joel Jr. Hansen, Adam Hansen, Ryan Hansen all of Aurora, Colo., Ryan Pole and Kobe Pole, both of Lackspur, Calif., Andrew Van Treeck, Kelly Van Treeck and Claire Van Treeck all of Batavia, Ill.; sisters Isabelle Jezwinski and Josephine Waskoviac of Berlin.

Mr. Kapula was preceded in death by brothers Leonard Kapula, Clifford Kalupa and Lewis Kalupa, sister Mary Kalupa.

Further survived by other relatives and friends.

A memorial fund has been established in his name.

Donald Hercules
Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Cedarburg for Donald Hercules, 80, of Cedarburg, who died Oct. 13, 2000 at his home. Interment was at the church cemetery. Mueller Funeral Home of Cedarburg assisted the family with arrangements.
Mr. Hercules was born July 27, 1920 in Milwaukee, to the late Leo and Emma (nee Ell) Hercules. He married his first wife Patricia (nee Kuhn) on Aug. 17, 1946. Following the death of Patricia, he married Marion Goelz on March 4,1978 at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Cedarburg.

Donald attended Marquette High School, Marquette University and Northern Michigan where he received his master’s degree. He worked at Cedarburg High School as a teacher, coach and athletic director for 35 years. He established the Driver’s Ed program, and was active in many sports at the high school including basketball, baseball and golf.

Survivors include: wife Marion of Grafton; children Mary (Rod) Kohlhepp of Stoughton, Kathe (Michael) Lee of Santa Barbara, Calif., Barbara (Daniel) Brylow of Milwaukee, Thomas of Juneau, Robert (Renee) of Cedar Grove, David of Tomah; step-children, Mari (John) Dickmann of Grafton, Michael (Cheryl) Goelz of Cedarburg, Julie (Blaine) Dobberpuhl of Cedarburg and Mark (Debbie) Goelz of Cedarburg; further survived by 17 grandchildren,1 great-grandchild, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Cancer Society or of your choice appreciated.

Mary Jane Billings
Cedarburg resident Mary Jane Billings died Oct. 15, 2000 at her son’s home in Lakewood, Wis. at the age of 87.
Private services for the family were held in northern Wisconsin, with arrangements handled by Suminski Funeral Home, Wabeno.

Mrs. Billings is survived by sons Russell (Erika) Billings of Lakewood and Robert (Alice) Billings of Minocqua; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Arthur L. 'Artie' Backhaus, 79

Arthur L. 'Artie' Backhaus, 79, of West Bend died Thursday, Oct. 19, 2000, at St. Joseph's Community Hospital of West Bend.

He was born to Henry (Emma Gessner) Backhaus on Feb. 15, 1921, in the town of Scott. He married Gertrude H. Raether on June 2, 1945, at Trinity Lutheran Church of Dundee.

He was raised in the town of Scott and a graduate of Random Lake High School with the class of 1939. After marriage, the couple lived in Hartford. He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church of Hartford. The couple finally settled in West Bend, where he was employed at Gehl Co. as an assembler and in the parts department for more than 36 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of West Bend and a choir member, and the 25-year Club of Gehl Co. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed dancing, cards and gardening.

He is survived by his wife; two children, Edith (Douglas) Welch of DePere and Howard (Cindy) Backhaus of Joppa, Md.; four grandchildren, Michael (Margaret) Welch of West Bend, Mark Welch (Nicole Gauthier) of Green Bay, Joseph and Jesse Backhaus, both of Joppa, Md.; one sister, Ella Klug of Brookfield, nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of West Bend with Pastor James R. Ziesemer officiating. Entombment will take place at Ledgeview Memorial Park, Fond du Lac, following the service. Visitation will be at the Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. and Wednesday at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Memorials are appreciated.

The Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend is assisting the family.

Judith A. Miller-Fassbender, 61

Judith Ann Miller-Fassbender, 61, died on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000, at the Veteran's Hospital in Milwaukee after many years of fighting a courageous battle with cancer.

Judith was born on Sept. 3, 1939, in West Bend, the daughter of the late Julius and Florence (Peterson) Fassbender. On Sept. 3, 1982, Judith married Jerry Miller, and they have enjoyed 18 years of marriage.

Judith proudly served her country as a member of the Army.

Judith is survived by her husband, Jerry; a daughter, Deborah (Joseph) Frank, Appleton; two step-sons, Daniel Miller, Menasha, and Scott Miller, Neenah; a brother, David Fassbender, Kenosha; six grandchildren, Nicholas, Andrew and Brian Frank, Appleton, and Karmen, Kirby and Kole Krueger, Appleton; four sisters-in-law, Vi Burmeister, Pensacola, Fla., Nettie (John) Annis, Neenah, Toni Krutz, Neenah, and Francis Gast, Menasha; four brothers-in-law, Donald Miller, Greenville, Miss., Paul Miller, Madison, Frank Miller, Neenah, and David (Pat) Miller, Neenah; an aunt, Elsie (Jack) Yahr, West Bend; other aunts; uncles; and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Dawn Krueger; two sisters-in-law, Juanita Weiss and Myrtle Weindherdt; and three brothers-in-law, Bill, Merrill and Murray Miller.

Judith's funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Wichmann Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Weiss officiating. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Park. Friends will be received at the funeral home on Sunday from 1 p.m. until the time of service.

Palmer O. Schlefke, 81
Palmer O. Schlefke, 81, of Menomonee Falls, died Friday, Oct. 20, 2000, at St. Joseph's Community Hospital, West Bend.
He was born May 24, 1919, in Oakfield, to the late Otto and Ida (nee Klebs) Schlefke.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater, and was a member of the Henrizi-Schneider American Legion Post 382 in Menomonee Falls.

He was formerly employed as a machinist for Server Products in Menomonee Falls until retiring in 1978.

Survivors include two children, Peter (Tammy) of West Bend and Pam (Ed) Lumby of Rome; three grandchildren, Megan Schlefke, Cassandra Cooper and Devin Lumby; three sisters, Ruby Hasenfus and Erna Uherka, both of Beaver Dam and Helen (David) Leiknes of Watertown; two sisters-in-law, Linda Schlefke of Beaver Dam and Irene Schlefke of West Bend; other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were a sister, Irene Lichtenberg, and two brothers, Edgar and Arthur.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m. at the Myrhum-Patten Funeral Home, West Bend.

Rev. Joseph Fisher of Pilgrim Ev. Lutheran Church, West Bend, will officiate.

Visitation at the funeral home will be Tuesday from 4 p.m. until the time of services.
