Arthur H. Samuels

Funeral services were at Schramka-Densow Funeral Home in Thiensville for Arthur H. Samuels, 91, who died on Jan. 8, 2001. Entombment was held at Wisconsin Memorial Park.
Survivors include: sons Arthur W. Samuels of Montgomery, Ala., Carlton (Irene) Samuels of Cedarburg; daughter Susan (John) Pastorek of Aurora, Ill.; 8 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren.

Further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn.

Charles Nicholas "Chuck" Race

A memorial fund has been established at Grafton State Bank for Charles Nicholas "Chuck" Race, who has been integrally linked to the Grafton Gladiators youth football team for nearly a decade. He died Jan. 22, 2001 at the age of 30.
Mr. Race was born March 22, 1970, son of Roger and Catherine Race of Grafton.

He served as a medic with the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry stationed in Arlington, Va. from May 1989 to May 1992. While in the service he was a member of the Presidential Honor Guard.

Mr. Race joined the Grafton Volunteer Fire Department in 1988, and served as a firefighter and EMT. In 1993, he was promoted to the rank of rescue lieutenant, resigning from the department in 1998 to devote more time to his family.

He also purchased a Santa Claus suit, and for many years volunteered as Santa for the patients at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee.

As a youth, Mr. Race played for the Grafton Gladiators youth football team, and coached in the program while a student at Grafton High School. In 1987 and 1988 he was the line coach for the A team. After returning from the service, he coached the offense for the B and C teams. Returning as the A team line coach in 1994, Mr. Race became head coach in 1995—coordinating the entire Gladiator program.

Since 1998, he served on the board of directors of the AFFYL, heading up the expansion committee. In 1999, Mr. Race was honored by the National Youth Sports Coaches Association, finishing second in the national "Coach of the Year" recognition.

During last year’s 25th anniversary of the Gladiator program, Mr. Race coordinated a reunion of hundreds of past players and coaches.

Coaching colleagues noted that Mr. Race "instilled in hundreds of kids a sense of commitment, pride, discipline and responsibility that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives."

Mr. Race is survived by his wife Paula (nee Hoffman), and children Maxwell and Makenna, all of Grafton. He is further survived by brothers Tom and Jon (Kelly) Race; in-laws Bob and Janice Hoffman of Grafton; brother-in-law Mark Hoffman; sister-in-law Julie (Todd) Elliott; other relatives and friends.

Martin O’Shea

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. for Martin O’Shea, 82, who died on Jan. 25, 2001. Visitation will be held from 12-2 p.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Newburg, followed by the service. Private interment will be held at St. Finbar’s Cemetery. Feerick Funeral Home in Shorewood assisted the family with arrangements.
Mr. O’Shea was born in County Clare, Ireland and was a former resident of Newburg.

Survivors include: wife Elizabeth O’Shea (nee McMillan); daughter Jennifer (Clint) Swanson; grandchildren Anne Marie and David Swanson.

Further survived by other relatives and friends.

Memorials in Martin’s name to St. Joesph’s Catholic Church in Grafton are appreciated.

Gladys M. Mickelson

A funeral service was held Wednesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grafton for Gladys M. Mickelson, 84, who died on Jan. 28, 2001. Rev. R. E. McClelland officiated at the ceremony, with arrangements handled by Mueller Funeral Home, Grafton. Burial was at Arlington Park Cemetery in Greenfield.
Mrs. Mickelson was born July 10, 1916 in Rosaire, daughter of William and Mary (nee Gilson) Cumber. She married Russell Mickelson on Sept. 22, 1948 in Milwaukee.

She attended St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grafton.

Survivors include: husband Russell Mickelson of Grafton; daughters Diane (Richard) Omdahl of Mequon, Mary (Roger) Nelson of Waunakee; son Robert (Suzan) Mickelson of Coon Rapids, Minn.; brother Harold Cumber of Oshkosh; grandchildren Rachelle (Daniel) Cehanovich, Melinda Omdahl, Shelly (John) Wood, Dana Mickelson, Brett Hagland.

Further survived by other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. John’s Lutheran Church and the Ozaukee County 4-H Foundation would be appreciated.

Thomas A. Keyes

A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church in Amherst on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 2 and 3:30 p.m. for former Cedarburg resident Thomas A. Keyes, 68, who died at his home Jan. 23, 2001. Rev. Susan Gaul, Pastor will officiate at the ceremony. Visitation, lunch and fellowship with the family will be held at the church from 1-5 p.m.
Arrangements were handled by A.J. Holly & Sons, Ltd. in Waupaca.

Mr. Keyes was born in Milwaukee on June 2, 1932, son of the late Thomas E. and Ruth (nee Wilkes) Keyes. He married Sue Winter on June 9, 1956 in Milwaukee.

After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, Mr. Keyes returned and worked for Wisconsin Electric Power Co., retiring as a supervisor. He was also a member of United Methodist Church in Amherst.

Survivors include his wife Sue Keyes; daughters Linda Rose (Thomas) Oesterle of Newman, Ga. and Jill Susan (Joseph) Frank of Cedarburg; son John Thomas Keyes; grandchildren Jamie, Paul, Allison and Luke; brother James (Marlene) Keyes of Oak Creek; sisters Dorothy (Thomas) Schelinske of Campbellsport and Doris (Marvin) Clement of New Berlin; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established to facilitate an operatic concert in Mr. Keyes’ honor benefiting the Portage County Hospice and the American Cancer Society.

Lois K. Hurth

A funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Advent Lutheran Church in Cedarburg for Lois K. Hurth, 86, who died Jan. 27, 2001. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service. Following the service there will be a reception in the church hall. Private burial will be held at Zur Ruhe Cemetery after the funeral.
Mrs. Hurth was born on Oct. 31, 1924 in Chillicothe, Ill., daughter of William and Maude (nee Crocker) Kehlenbach.

She was a past member of St. Edmund’s Episcopal Church in Elm Grove and past president of the Elm Grove League of Women Voters. She was also past president of the Cedarburg Woman’s Club and past antique show chairwoman. She attended Advent Lutheran Church in Cedarburg.

She married Richard L. Speaker in April 1944 and is survived by their four children: Sandy (Max) Eidswick of Ft. Collins, Colo., Rick (Wendy) Speaker of Hopkinton, N.H., Greg Speaker of Greensboro, N.C., Scott (Jenny) Speaker of Dacula, Ga. and 6 grandchildren.

She married John J. Hurth of Cedarburg on July 11, 1969. She is survived by his four children: John J. (Laima) Hurth of Fredonia, Martha Metzger of Longmont, Colo., Daniel (Tita) Hurth of Whitefish Bay, Linda (Ed) McCaffrey of Nederland, Colo.; 10 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by John J. Hurth.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts in Lois’ memory to either Knox College, Galesburg, Ill. or Advent Lutheran Church. Her wishes were that gifts to the latter be designated to provide audio tapes of sermons to those who could not get out and attend church in person.

Elwood O. "Tillie" Gramoll

Funeral services were held on Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cedarburg for Elwood O. "Tillie" Gramoll, 85, who died on Jan. 25, 2001. Interment was at Immanuel Cemetery.
The Mueller Funeral Home in Cedarburg assisted the family with arrangements.

Mr. Gramoll was born in Mequon on April 2, 1915 to the late Arthur and Augusta (nee Mueller) Gramoll. He married Florence (nee Hilgendorf) on Sept. 11, 1937 at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Freistadt. They were married for 63 years.

He worked for the Ozaukee CountyHighway Department for 19 years and was an active member of the Mequon Fire Department for 51 years.

Survivors include: wife Florence of Mequon; sisters Florence Hall of Cedarburg and Olivia Grube of Mequon.

Further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by sister Dorthea Hilgendorf.

Memorials to the church or the donor’s choice are appreciated.

John A. Barthel
A funeral service was held Wednesday at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Freistadt for John A. Barthel, 80, who died on Jan. 24, 2001. Interment was held at the church cemetery. The Mueller Funeral Home in Cedarburg assisted the family with arrangements.

Mr. Barthel was born in Milwaukee on March 11, 1920 the son of Joseph and Anna (nee Fritz) Barthel. He married the late Gladys (nee Pipkorn) on Aug. 3, 1946 at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Freistadt.

He was a carpenter most of his working life. He also was an active member of the Howard J. Schroeder American Legion Post # 457 and Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Freistadt.

Survivors include: children Bonnie (Mark) Koenig of Cedarburg, Glenn (Carol) of Mequon, Lee (Gena) of Brookfield; grandchildren Jennifer Koenig of Menomonee Falls, Christopher Koenig of Cedarburg, Jeffery (Nikki) Barthel of Sussex, Casey and Nickie Barthel of Brookfield; sisters Lillian Barthel of Milwaukee and Esther Wille of Wauwatosa.

Further survived by brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends.

Memorials to the charity of the donor’s choice are appreciated.

Odessa A. Schloemer
Odessa A. Schloemer, 87, formerly of West Bend, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Hope Nursing Home, Lomira, where she was a resident.

She was born on Aug. 2, 1913, in the town of Jackson, to the late Henry C. and Isabelle Burckardt Schloemer.

She was a graduate of Washington County Normal and taught at various schools in Washington County for 11 years.

She then worked for Carnation Milk in Milwaukee and later in Los Angeles, Calif., and then worked for GATX in Chicago until retiring.

Odessa also lived with her nephew, Curt Kissinger and cared for his children for a number of years after death of Curt's wife.

She was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church in West Bend and a member of the Women's Naomi Circle at the church.

Survivors include a sister, Luella (Leroy) Kissinger of Campbellsport; six nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were two brothers, Clyde and Lee.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 1 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, West Bend.

Rev. David Schoob will officiate, and burial will be in Union Cemetery, West Bend.

Visitation will be at the church on Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of services.

Memorials are appreciated to Trinity Lutheran Church.

The Twohig Funeral Home, Campbellsport, is serving the family.
