James Robert Brown
James Robert Brown, 87, a long-time West Bend resident and president of The West Bend Co. from 1959-’71, died on Wednesday, March 7, 2001, in San Diego, Calif.

He was born Oct. 21, 1913, in Sullivan, Ind., to the late James Rolla Brown and Sarah Holsen Brown, the sixth of seven brothers.

In 1931 he received an Austin (Business School) scholarship from Northwestern University.

He later wrote "I had no real desire for ‘business.’ I'm not sure I knew what ‘business’ meant. But it proved to involve personal relationships and provided opportunities to satisfy the desire to excel, to learn, to help others, to follow moral guidelines that have been proven in human experience, even to try a few paths guided only by faith and enthusiasm."

It was at Northwestern that Brown met Marianne Kirkland. They would have been married 65 years on June 20 of this year.

Their three daughters are blessed by their example of love and by the manner in which they complemented and lived with one another, becoming more than each could have been alone.

After graduation, Brown was hired as an assistant to B.C. Ziegler, who was then president of The West Bend Co.

While in West Bend he was active in many church and community efforts and organizations, and was president of a number of business organizations, including the Wisconsin Taxpayers Association, the Wisconsin Manufacturers Association and the Metal Cookware Manufacturers Association.

Valuing education, he and his wife were both instrumental in the establishment of West Bend's University of Wisconsin Washington County.

For a short period after his retirement, Brown taught as executive in residence at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He also served as chairman of the Board of Trustees at Lawrence University, Appleton.

After retiring to San Diego in 1974, the Browns both taught for the University of San Diego's Department of Community Education. He taught various humanities courses, and his book, "A History of the World Based on 47 Lives," was popular with his students.

Survivors include his wife, Marianne; their daughters, Sally (John) Frahm of Austin, Texas, Bonnie (Jim) Rock of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Dee (Steve) Brestin of Kearney, Neb.; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack Warren of Sarasota, Fla.; and other relatives and friends.

Cards may be sent to Marianne Brown in care of her daughter, Dee Brestin, at 11 Lakeview, Kearney, Neb. 68854.
