John F. Becker
John F. Becker, 60, of the town of Trenton, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at his residence.

He was born June 25, 1940, in West Bend, to the late Paul J. and Marie L. (nee Thelen) Becker, and on June 24, 1961, married Barbara L. Bastian at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Newburg.

After high school John worked for Lawrence Stockhausen for about five years. He then became employed in the brick laying trade, retiring in June of 1998.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing and many other outdoor activities.

John was a member of the Brick Layers Local 8.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Deborah (Walter) Loeffelad of the town of Trenton; three granddaughters, Sara, Hannah and Emma; four brothers, Robert (Diane) of West Bend, Donald (Bonnie) and Richard (Dianne), both of Newburg and Michael (Ann) of Kewaskum; his mother-in-law, Loretta Bastian of West Bend; four sisters-in-law, Carol Feypel of Georgia, Marlene (Martin) Laufer of New Berlin, Mary Ellen (Kenneth) Knoebel of Green Bay and Gale Mayer of West Bend; a brother-in-law, Jacob Bastian Jr. of Fillmore; special friend, Donny Biertzer of the town of Trenton; aunts; uncles; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death was his father-in-law, Jacob Bastian.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 2, at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Newburg.

Fr. Robert Sampon will be the presider and burial will be Thursday in Washington County Memorial Park, West Bend.

Visitation at the church only will be Wednesday from 3:30 to 6:45 p.m.

Memorials are appreciated.

Evelyn Reimer
Evelyn Reimer, 77, of the town of Fredonia, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital Ozaukee in Mequon.

She was born May 26, 1923, in the town of Trenton, to the late Jessie and Elsie (Weiss) Kertscher, and on Sept. 29, 1945, married Hilbert "Whitey" Reimer at St. Martin's United Church of Christ in Fillmore.

He passed away in 1996.

Mrs. Reimer was an inspector at Amity Leather in West Bend for 24 years, retiring in 1989.

She was a member of St. Martin's United Church of Christ, Fillmore.

Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Reimer of the town of Fredonia; two sons, Dennis Sr. (Roberta) of Sheboygan Falls and Wayne (Donna) of Phoenix; two grandchildren, Angela and Dennis Jr.; a brother, Earl Kertscher of Silver Creek; three sisters, Dorothy Breit, Florence Pietchmann of West Bend and Marcella (Rudy) Stadler of Saukville.

Preceding her in death were two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 2, at 7 p.m. at the Eernisse Funeral Home, Port Washington.

Rev. David Jerger will officiate, and burial will be in St. Martin's Union Cemetery, Fillmore.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m.

George P. "Smokey" Weinert
Former West Bend Police Chief George P. "Smokey" Weinert, 83, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at St. Michael's Hospital in Milwaukee.

He was born to the late Adolph and Anna (Swanson-Mapes) Weinert on Feb. 23, 1918 on the Weinert homestead southeast of West Bend.

George attended Holy Angels Grade School and graduated from West Bend High School in 1936. He was awarded the Pick Award for baseball in 1936.

George was an outstanding pitcher and had a tryout with the Brooklyn Dodgers’ Triple A team.

After high school he started working for the Gehl Co.

On May 13, 1939 George married Helen Bremser at St. Michael's Catholic Church in St. Michaels.

On May 3, 1940, he started work for the city of West Bend as a police officer.

In 1945, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After World War II, he returned to West Bend and his job as a patrolman for the city.

In 1954, he was named assistant chief of police and was named chief of police for the city of West Bend on July 1, 1956. George retired from the police department as chief on Dec. 31,1977.

In addition to his police officer duties, George was an entrepreneur. Smokey started the City Cab Co., a window washing business, a burial vault business and WW Florock, a floor installation business.

In 1960, he married Grace Schroeder-Schofield. They were married 40 years last November.

George was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved the outdoors. He loved telling tales about his hunting and fishing adventures. He loved to play cards and was a whiz at joke telling.

Smokey belonged to the Wisconsin Police Chiefs Association and the American Legion Lt. Ray Dickop Post 36 of West Bend. He also belonged to many other organizations.

Along with his wife Grace, survivors include four children, Ann (Mitch) Gebheim of Ke-waskum, Suzanne (Herb) Tennies of West Bend, Casey (Ray) Zernia of Kewaunee and Joel George Weinert of Hayward; 10 grandchildren, Todd (Lisa) Tennies, Terry (Peggy) Tennies, David (Sherry) Tennies, Tricia (Gary) Held, Steven Tennies, Lynn (Dale) Schmidt, Jill (Mike) Waala, Jenny (Kevin) Loomis, Michelle (Scott) Gleason and Mitchell (Nicole) Gebheim; 13 great-grandchildren, Lauren, Alyssa, Mary, Ben, Julia and Jack Tennies, Drew, Bryce and Mary Kate Schmidt, Grant and Evan Waala, Alexandra Gleason and David Loomis; nieces and nephews, Mary Jane (Nick) Thanos, Joanne Michels, Harold (Betty) Mapes Jr. and John (Karen) Mapes; other relatives and many friends.

Preceding him in death were his brother, Harold Mapes; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Mapes; a granddaughter, Mary Tennies; and a stepson, David Schofield.

Memorial services will be held on Monday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the Myrhum-Patten Funeral Home, West Bend.

Co-officiating will be Rev. Victor Hackbarth and Mother Martha Berger of St. James Episcopal Church.

Visitation at the funeral home will be Monday from 4 p.m. until the time of services.

Memorials in honor of George "Smokey" Weinert to the American Parkinson's Association or the American Legion are greatly appreciated.

He was so loved and will be greatly missed.

Dorothy Mae Ottosen
Dorothy Mae Ottosen, nee Lowery, 72, of Richfield, entered into eternal life on Monday, April 23, 2001, at Virginia Highlands Nursing Home, Germantown, surrounded by her family.

Dorothy was born April 28, 1928, in Texas, to Russel and Maude Lowery, and on Nov. 12, 1946, married George H. Ottosen.

Together they owned the Double O Tavern in Richfield which they operated successfully for many years.

Dorothy was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Survivors include her husband; her mother, Maude Lowery of Texas; three daughters, Mary (Wayne) Erickson of Fond du Lac, Christine (Edward) Kincaid of Seattle, Wash. and Karen Feagin of Texas; four sons, Steven (Dolly) Ottosen of Menomonee Falls, Charles (Vicki) Ottosen of Lake Mills, Pat Ottosen of Richfield, Micheal (Gaywood) Ottosen of Alvin; 23 grandchildren, Travis and Tonya Erickson, Linda Solberg, Michael and Dale DuPree, Michelle and Michael Thompson, Kelly, Kim and Shawn Schultz, Michael Jr., Angie and Nicholas Ottosen, Kevin Jubeck, Jesse and Elizabeth Ottosen, Denny, Tim, Rhonda, Donna, Mike, Andy and Jeff Ottosen; many great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marian (John) Grasse of Mequon; a long-time friend, Mary Ellen Ottosen of Pewaukee, daughter-in-law and widow of George Ottosen Jr., and other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were her father, Russel Lowery; two brothers, Neil and Bud Lowery; three sons, George Ottosen Jr., Robert Ottosen and Joseph Ottosen; and a daughter, Linda Ottosen.

Memorial services for all who knew and loved her will be held Saturday, April 28, at 11 a.m. at the Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend, with Father James Strupp officiating.

Dorothy should be remembered as a compassionate and charitable woman with a warm heart and an open hand.

Special thanks is given to Virginia Highlands Nursing Home and Odyssey Hospice, both of Germantown, for providing our loved one with comfort and outstanding care.

Clarence M. Wellhoefer
Clarence M. Wellhoefer, 77, of West Bend, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at St. Joseph's Community Hospital.

He was born Aug. 14, 1923, in the town of Herman, Dodge County, to the late Leonard and Ottilie (Derge) Wellhoefer, and married Wilma M. Roeder on Oct. 17, 1953, at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, Milwaukee.

He was employed at Froedtert's Malt Co. of Milwaukee and later by American Motor Co. of Milwaukee as an assembler for over eight years.

He retired in the early 1980s and moved to West Bend in the early 1990s.

Survivors include his wife; two brothers, Lester Wellhoefer of the town of Herman and Leslie Wellhoefer of Neenah; a sister-in-law, Jean (Ralph) Spangenberg of Marinette; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

Clarence was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of West Bend and was an avid woodworker.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 3, at 2 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, West Bend.

Pastor Cleone H. Wegand will officiate, and interment will be in Washington County Memorial Park, West Bend.

Visitation at the church only will be Thursday from noon to 2 p.m.

Memorials are appreciated to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

The Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend is serving the family.
