John W. Wylie
John W. Wylie, 51, of West Bend, died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at Froedtert Memorial Hospital, Milwaukee.

He was born Sept. 29, 1949, in Milwaukee, to John and Ruth (Meiser) Wylie, and attended Custer High School in Milwaukee.

On May 7, 1983, he married Ann M. Hrdi in Milwaukee.

John was employed at A.O. Smith of Milwaukee as a sales engineer while living in the West Bend area.

Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Denice (Randy Semling) Wylie of Delevan, Christina (Michael) Hughes of Mayville, Wendi (Shane) Leveille of Slinger and Lauren Wylie of West Bend; his parents, John and Ruth Wylie of Jackson; his mother-in-law, Margaret Hrdi of Milwaukee; two sisters, Diane Saladin of Milwaukee and Nancy (Bruce) Peterson of Milwaukee; family companion, Walker the dog; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death was his father-in-law, John Hrdi.

He was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church of West Bend.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, May 9, at 6 p.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Church, West Bend.

Father Jeffrey Haines will officiate, and interment will be in Washington County Memorial Park, West Bend, at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Visitation at the church only will be Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m.

The Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend is assisting the family.

Bertha A. Conway
Bertha A. Conway (nee Walz) of Hartford, formerly of Milwaukee and Port Richey, Fla., 86, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at the Hartford Care Center, Hartford.

She was born to Frederick (Sophia Bischke) Walz on Sept. 8, 1914 in Freeman, S.D. She married David John Conway on July 3, 1937, at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Milwaukee.

She was born and raised in Freeman. After marriage, the couple lived in Milwaukee until 1973, when they moved to Port Richey, Fla. They lived there until 1997 when they moved back to Slinger. She was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church of Slinger.

She is survived by one daughter, Bonnie (Mark) Monroe of Slinger; three grandchildren, Jena, Mark II and Matthew; two sisters, Emma Niesl of Milwaukee and Viola Manning of Fla.; one sister-in-law, June (Everette) Taylor of Grafton; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband on Dec. 9, 2000, and two brothers.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 4860 Arthur Road (Highway NN and 144), Slinger, with Pastor Alan R. Lindberg officiating. Cremation will take place at Parkview Crematory, Fond du Lac, with inurnment at Valhalla Memorial Park, Milwaukee. Visitation will be at the church only on Tuesday from 3-5 p.m.

Memorials are appreciated to St. Luke Lutheran Church of Slinger.

The Phillip Funeral Home of Slinger is assisting the family.

Harriet B. Steele
Harriet B. Steele, nee Gerner, 85, of Oconomowoc, died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at her home after a long battle with leukemia, having been diagnosed with the disease in 1975.

She was born Jan. 26, 1916, in the town of Farmington, to the late Edwin and Milda (Groeschel) Gerner.

She graduated from West Bend High School in 1932 and from Milwaukee County General Hospital School of Nursing in 1938, where she was class president all three years.

Harriet worked at Milwaukee County General Hospital from January 1938 to March 1941, and Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital from 1954 until 1981. She helped admit the first patient to the Oconomowoc hospital.

She was a lifetime member of the Milwaukee School of Nursing.

On May 24, 1941, she married William C. Steele.

Survivors include her husband; children, William E. (Michele) of Laguna Niguel, Calif., Elaine (Pat) Quilliam of Copiague Long Island, N.Y., Beverly (Robert) Bonner of Carmel, Ind. and Robert (Lorinda) of Gillette, Wyo.; nine grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; sisters, Winifred Gerner of West Bend, Beulah Leissring of Waubeka, and Caroline (Norton) Risse of Slinger; a brother, Willard (Sylvia) Gerner of Fort Atkinson; sisters-in-law, Enola Gerner of Whitewater and Eleanor Steele (Carl) Monis of Mapleton; many nieces and nephews; her former daughter-in-law, Laverne Kahn Raulston of Cypress, Calif.

Preceding her in death were a brother, Leslie; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Lorraine (Vogler) Steele; a brother-in-law, Karl Leissring; her parents-in-law, William G. and Olga (Schram) Steele; and nieces, Mary Jean Monis and Vickie Gerner Mau.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 6.

Memorials may be given to Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Lisbon Road Oconomowoc; the Cancer Center of Memorial Hospital in Oconomowoc; or Lutherdale Bible Camp, N7891 Highway 12, Elkhorn, Wis. 53121.

Edwin H. Russell
Edwin H. Russell, 68, of the town of Richfield, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 20, 1932, in Milwaukee, to the late Henry and Nathalie (Laabs) Russell, and served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

After the military, he moved to the town of Richfield. He was a mechanic for Schwartzburg Chevrolet of Milwaukee for over 20 years.

Survivors include dear friends, Glen and Arlene Gotowitz of Mauston; other relatives and friends.

Private military services were held at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Union Grove.

Cremation took place at Parkview Cremations of Fond du Lac with interment of ashes in Southern Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery.

The Phillip Funeral Home, Slinger, assisted the family.

Waldemar G. Davis

Waldemar G. Davis, 70, of West Bend, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at his residence.
He was born Dec. 31, 1930, in Milwaukee, to the late Gerald and Dorothy (nee Simpson) Davis, and married Lucille Sandvoss on Dec. 12, 1953, in Milwaukee.

He as employed as a welder at Telsmith in Mequon for 30 years, retiring in 1994.

He was an avid sportsman and was a member of the Menomonee falls Rod and gun Club for many years.

Survivors include his wife; two children, Linda (Scott) Klein of Pewaukee and Steve Davis of Las Vegas, Nev.; two grandchildren, Matthew Klein and Jennifer Klein, both of Pewaukee; other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death was a brother, Gerald Davis.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Chapel of the Chimes at Wisconsin Memorial Park, Brookfield.

Cremation will follow with burial of the cremated remains in Wisconsin Memorial Park.

Visitation at Wisconsin Memorial Park will be Friday from 4 p.m. until the time of services.

Memorials to the American Cancer Society are appreciated.

John W. Wylie

A Mass of Christian Burial was held yesterday at St. Frances Cabrini Church of West Bend for John W. Wylie of West Bend who died on May 6, 2001, at the age of 51. Father Jeffrey Haines officiated at the ceremony with arrangements handled by Phillip Funeral Home, West Bend. Interment will take place at Washington County Memorial Park this morning.
Mr. Wylie was born Sept. 29, 1949 in Milwaukee, son of John and Ruth (nee Meiser) Wylie. He married Ann Hrdi on May 7, 1983 in Milwaukee. He worked at A. O. Smith of Milwaukee as a sales engineer. He was a member of St. Francis Cabrini Church of West Bend.

Further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and the family companion "Walker" the dog.

He is preceded in death by his father-in-law John Hrdi.

Patricia A. Wiegel

A memorial service will be held today at 6:30 p.m. at Mueller Funeral Home of Cedarburg for Patricia A. Wiegel of Grafton who died May 5, 2001 at the age of 65 at her home in Grafton. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Cancer Society appreciated.
Patricia was born in Milwaukee on Oct. 8, 1935 the daughter of the late Gustave and Barbara (nee Ertl) Schmidt. She graduated from Messmer High School and worked as an accountant.

Patricia is survived by children: Dana (Andrew) Wiegele of Wisconsin Dells, Todd (Linda) Wiegele of Grafton and Tim Wiegele of Milwaukee; brothers Don Schmidt of Sun Prairie and Bill (Vicki) Schmidt of Menomonee Falls; sisters Barbara (Robert) Manders of Menomonee Falls, Alice Schmidt of Greenfield and Mary Schmidt of Menomonee Falls; two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Special thanks to Horizon Hospice and Dr. Salvador del Rosario for their compassionate care.

Herbert O. Schmalz

A funeral service was held on Sunday, May 6, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grafton for Herbert O. Schmalz who died on May 3, 2001 at Mequon Care Center at the age of 87. Interment was in Lakefield Cemetery immediately following the service. Mueller Funeral Home, Grafton assisted the family.
Mr. Schmalz was born Oct. 1, 1913 in St. Paul, Minn. the son of the late Detrich and Eleonara (nee Klug) Schmalz. He married Lucille Viesselmann on Aug. 30, 1941 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lakefield. He worked as a carpenter.

Survivors include: wife Lucille Schmalz of Mequon Care Center; children: Kenneth (Janis) of Port Washington, Donald (Martha) of Fond du Lac, Charles (Donna) of Grafton, Robert of Grafton, David (Cris) of Grafton.

Further survived by grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Dietrich Schmalz Jr. and a sister Lee Peters.
