Elton R. Beck
Elton R. Beck of Hartford passed away on Thursday, June 14, 2001 at his home. He was 85 years old.

He was born in Hartford on May 9, 1916 to Emil and Freda Beck. Upon graduation from Hartford High School, he worked for several concerns in town and like many of the young men of the area, joined the National Guard. When WWII broke out, his unit was activated and he became a member of the 128th Infantry Band, which later became the 32nd Division (the famed Red Arrow) Band. The band traveled in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines, and was based at Port Moresby in New Guinea, the wartime headquarters of General Douglas MacArthur.

Music often played 'second fiddle' to other duties such as working night and day in a supply unit, loading transport planes with food and ammunition, and then on dropping missions, pushing the packages from the planes to the troops below while being fired on by enemy anti-aircraft and attacked by Japanese Zero planes. For these extremely dangerous missions, Elton, as well as other men of the unit, received the Air Force's Distinguished Air Medal.

After the war, Elton returned to Hartford and after a respite, worked in and around Hartford, eventually going to work for Harnischfeger Corp. in Milwaukee. After 25 years, he retired.

His great passions in life were family, friends, sports and music. An avid baseball fan, in his youth he invented a game based on baseball information which he and his friends enjoyed during their early years.

Elton was a member of Hartford Masonic Lodge No. 120, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and St. John's United Church of Christ.

He is survived by his sister, Beatrice Gaulke and his nephew, Stanley J. (Parvin) Gaulke, all of Cave Creek, Ariz.; and two great-nephews, John and Robert Gaulke.

A simple graveside service took place with the interment of ashes on Tuesday, June 19 at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Hill Cemetery with Rev. Edward Freese presiding.

The family of Elton Beck would like to express its thanks to the Earl and Randy Dupont families and to Russell and Jean Westphal for their love, friendship and care given to Elton, especially during his last months of illness.
