Frances C. Mertens
Frances C. Mertens, nee Marble, 77, of West Bend, died on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2001, at her residence.

She was born in Mukwanago on Sept. 13, 1924, to the late Herbert W. and Neda B.(nee Riley), and attended the Milwaukee County Nursing School, graduating in 1951.

Following her marriage to Donald G. Mertens on Dec. 28, 1953, at Trinity Lutheran Church, they settled in West Bend.

She became employed at the Samaritan Health Center as a registered nurse, and later at Gehl Co. as an industrial nurse.

Her hobbies and pastimes included reading, knitting, traveling and spending time with her family and friends.

Her husband passed away Sept. 17, 1998.

Survivors include five children, Daniel (Diane) of Solon, Ohio, Jane (Les) Ludwig of Roseburg, Ore., Laurie (Kerry) Ropiak and Sandra Mertens, both of West Bend and William (Sarah) of Pewaukee; six grandchildren, Kristy and Angela Ludwig, Brian and Amy Mertens and Paige and Madelyn Mertens; a brother, Russell (Rosemary) Marble of West Bend; two sisters, Jean Stickley of West Allis and Judy Viroj) Inkapairoj of Bangkok, Thailand; a sister-in-law, Helen Marble of West Allis; other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were a sister, Marion Stokien and a brother, Ralph Marble.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, West Bend, with Rev. David Schoob officiating.

Visitation will be Thursday at the church only from 5 to 6:45 p.m.

The family has asked that memorials be given to the Salvation Army or Habitat for Humanity.

The Schmidt Funeral Home, West Bend, is serving the family.

Douglas R. Wierman
Douglas R. Wierman, 63, of South Milwaukee, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 22.

He was the beloved husband of Sandra (nee Riley) Wierman; loving dad of the late Todd Patrick, Tracy (Donn) Powers, Tim (Karin), Tari (Kenneth) Schulte, Tony (Suzanne), Tricia (Sam) Crespin and Tia (Nicholas) Schell; proud grandpa of 20 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; dear brother of the late Donald (Ruth), Roger (Margie) and the late Gordon.

He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at St. Adalbert's Catholic Church, 1611 Manitoba Ave., South Milwaukee. Please meet at the church.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Molthen-Bell and Sons Funeral Home, South Milwaukee, with a parish vigil at 7 p.m.

John M. Sheridan

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, in Grafton for John M. Sheridan, who died on Sept. 21, 2001, at the age of 56.
Father Mike Barrett officiated at the ceremony. Interment was at Resurrection Cemetery in Mequon. The Mueller Funeral Home, Grafton, assisted the family with arrangements.

Mr. Sheridan was born Dec. 31, 1944 in Fond du Lac, to the late Harold and Eunice (McCoy) Sheridan and married Barbara (nee Schultz) on Dec. 28, 1985 at St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church in Thiensville.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Grafton. He was employed as a collections specialist at Wisconsin Credit Union League. He was actively involved in many church and community organizations.

Survivors include his wife, Barb Sheridan of Grafton; children, Kevin of Grafton, Tim of Thornton, Colo. and Sheila (Ed) Griffin of Thornton, Colo.; grandson, Peter John Griffin; sisters, Ann (Joseph) Wenzler of Mequon and Barb Detloff of Fond du Lac; sister-in-law, Mary Sheridan of Fond du Lac. Further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Robert.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Kevin Patrick Sheridan Education Fund appreciated.

Irma J. Schmidt

A funeral service will be held tonight at 7 p.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Rubicon for Irma J. Schmidt (nee Schlegel) who died on Sept. 23, 2001 at Mercy Assisted Care Haven House in Janesville at the age of 81.
Visitation will be at the church today from 4 p.m. until time of service at 7 p.m. Burial will be at Immanuel Cemetery in Cedarburg. Rev. Larry Westfield officiating.

Mrs. Schmidt was born June 10, 1910, the daughter of the late Emil and Louise (nee Heber) Schlegel. She married the late Benjamin A. Krueger on Nov. 18, 1944 and the late Jerome Schmidt on Aug. 1, 1970. She worked as a nurse’s aid for many different hospitals.

She is survived by children David (Janet) Krueger and Deloris Bierman; step-children Robert (Cathy) Schmidt and Debra Schmidt; sister Leona "Onie" Ott.

She is the grandmother of Jim and David Schlegel; Tyler, Tricia and Trevor Krueger; Shane, Christine and Kevin Krueger; Heath and Steve Bierman; step grandmother of Michelle and Cindy Schmidt. great-grandmother of Dana and Angela Schlegel, Kayla Krueger, Samantha, Brandon and Colton Fisher-Krueger, Ben and Holly Krueger, Carlye Ann and Dalton Bierman; and step great-grandmother of Kayla Marie Schmidt and Crystal Krueger.

She was preceded in death by two sons Wilburt Schlegel and Donald Krueger and two grandsons Timothy Schlegel and Shawn Krueger.

She is further survived by other relatives and friends.

James A. "Jim" Lembke

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Sept. 25 for James A. "Jim" Lembke who died Sept. 21, 2001 at the age of 68, at his home after a long, courageous battle with cancer.
The visitation was held at Full Gospel Church in West Bend from 5-7 p.m. The funeral service followed the visitation with Rev. James Booker officiating.

Mr. Lembke was born June 10, 1933 to the late Arthur Lembke and the late Violet Zellmer.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors. He was also a member of Full Gospel Church and was a very giving man of both his time and talents. He had a great sense of humor and will be missed dearly by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife Naomi (nee Doss) of Grafton; children Cindy (Dave) Guzzetta of Cudahy, Pam Wodarczak of Port Washington and Wanda (Dennis) Peterson of Green Bay; brother Marvin (Helen) Haubrick; sisters Edna Hogan, Helen (Alvin) Thompson and Julie (Lawrence) Scott; foster child Wayne (Betty) Griep.

He is further survived by six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, three foster grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister.

The Mueller Funeral Home of Grafton assisted the family.

Frank Robert Griffith

A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Frank Robert Griffith, who died on Sept. 21, 2001 at the age of 85, will be held next month at St. Boniface Episcopal Church, Mequon, where he has been a member since his return to Wisconsin in 1993. Internment will be at Westlawn, Racine.
Mr. Griffith was born Aug. 9, 1916, in Racine, the son of J.R. and Ella Reukauff Griffith. He married Helen Jeanette Turner on July 20, 1940 in Eau Claire.

He was a concrete paver most of his life, he joined his father and brother in the JR Griffith Co., Racine. In 1961 he and his brother created the Racine Marina along the Root River, eventually selling out to Palmer Johnson. He joined the LG Arnold Co., Eau Claire, in 1963 to head up the concrete paving division. He was with them until 1975, maintaining close contact with the family and industry until his death. He served several terms with both the Wisconsin Concrete Paving and Road Builders Associations, serving as president of the former from 1959-1960.

He is survived by a daughter Merrillyn Griffith Shaw and grandson Mark Shaw of Cedarburg, granddaughter Myra Shaw (Bruce) Mianecki of Las Vegas; sister Dode (George) Baumann of Grand Rapids, Mich., and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard, and sisters Marjorie (Ray Brandt) and Jean (Todd Leavitt).

William A. "Bill" Turner

William A. "Bill" Turner, 77, of West Bend died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at his residence.
He was born on Sept. 17, 1924 in Stoughton to the late Earl and Evelyn (nee Busch) Turner, and at an early age moved to West Bend with his family.

He graduated from West Bend High School class of 1942 and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served in the European Theater from France through Germany and Czechoslovakia.

On May 1, 1948, he was united in marriage to June Rose Otten at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Parish. She preceded him in death on May 1, 1985.

Bill was employed at Johnson Bus Service as their accountant until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of St. Mary’s Immaculate Parish and member of the West Bend Moose Lodge #1398. Bill was an avid gardener, his yard was his pride and joy. He was also an accomplished woodworker.

He is survived by four children, Gene (Kris) Turner of West Bend, John Turner of Germantown, Lynn (Dan) Mertzig of West Bend and Scott (Julie) Turner of West Bend; eight grandchildren, Jean Turner, Jennifer Lenzendorf, Jackie Turner, Lance Mertzig, Chris Mertzig, Bob Mertzig, Kathy Turner and Michael Turner; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Mertzig of West Bend; a sister-in-law, Shirley Klug of West Bend; special friends Bob "Otto" Kumrow, Bernie Wagner and Tom Williams; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Alberta Teeter; and a brother, LaVerne Klug.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 7 p.m. at Myrhum-Patten Funeral and Cremation Service, West Bend. Visitation will be Sunday at the funeral home from 4 p..m until the time of service. Burial will be in St. Mary’s (old) Cemetery on Monday at 10:30 a.m.

The family would like to express a special thanks to Dr. Smale, Dr. Kaufmann, Dr. Vukelich and Heartland Hospice.

Raymond A. Schmidt

Raymond A. Schmidt, 91, of West Bend, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at St. Joseph’s Community Hospital in West Bend.
He was born to Anton (Helen Olsen) Schmidt on March 1, 1910, in Chicago. On Sept. 12, 1931, he married Marion J. McCelland at Mayfair Methodist Church in Chicago.

Born and raised in Chicago, he was an accountant and consultant for many industrial firms in Chicago and Indiana . In 1975, he retired from Hurst Manufacturing Corp. of Princeton, Ind. In 1975, the couple moved to Cedarburg and in 1986 to the Cedar Lake Village.

He is survived by three daughters, Joan (Charles) Whitburn of Cedarburg, Sandra (Walger) Graham of Anna, Ill. and Kathe (Richard) Whaley of Cedarburg; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife on May 1, 1993; his parents and a sister, Leora Green.

Private services were held on Thursday at the Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend.

Inurnment will take place at Wisconsin Memorial Park of Brookfield.

The Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend is assisting the family.
