Bernard F. "Bernie" Kauper
Bernard F. "Bernie" Kauper, 73, of Hartford, passed away on Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at the Hartford Care Center.

He was born July 23, 1928, in Hartford, to the late John and Alice (nee Schellinger) Kauper.

Bernie lived with a dear aunt, Ida Schmitt, for many years.

He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Hartford Senior Friends.

In 1993 Bernie retired from Slinger Manufacturing. He was also a parking lot attendant at the Slinger Fair Grounds and Slinger Race Track for many years.

In his retirement years he spent many enjoyable hours at the Hartford Senior Friends who were his dear friends. Bernie also enjoyed traveling and car racing and had a great love for polka music.

Survivors include uncles, aunts, numerous cousins and many friends.

Preceding him in death was a brother, Carel.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, St. Lawrence.

Fr. Alois VanBeek will officiate, and interment will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery.

The family will greet relatives and friends at the Shimon Funeral Home, Hartford, on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m., with the Senior Friends at 4:30 p.m., and on Saturday from 8 to 9 a.m.

Memorials to the American Diabetes Association or charity of one's choice are appreciated.

Arnold J. Kumrow
Arnold J. Kumrow, 80, of West Bend, died on Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at the Samaritan Health Center.

He was born on July 20, 1921, in West Bend, to the late Arnold and Ella (nee Gerhardt) Kumrow, and married Fern M. Crass on Sept. 9, 1940, in Dubuque, Iowa.

Fern passed away on Jan. 24, 2001.

Arnold served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre. He was a drummer in the U.S. Army Band and also played drums with John Klinka and Little Johnny's Band.

Survivors include four children, David (Mary), Barbara (Charles) Stehlik and Janice (Joseph) Harter, all of West Bend, and Joanne (Dennis) Rank of Campbellsport; 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by a sister, Doris Fisher of West Bend; a brother, Robert (Bernice) of West Bend; two sisters-in-law, Violet Biertzer of West Bend and June Rennicke of Mequon; a brother-in-law, Iver Crass of West Bend; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were two children, Judith Tomko and Daniel Kumrow; two grandchildren, Julie and David Tomko; brothers-in-law, Bernard Fischer, James and Merlin Crass and Werner Rennicke; and a sister-in-law, Ermine Crass.

At the family's request, there will be no services at this time.

Inurnment will be in St. John's Cemetery in the town of Jackson.

The Schmidt Funeral Home, West Bend, is serving the family.

Jane M. Schulze

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27 at Friedens Ev. Church in Port Washington for Jane M. Schulze, who died on Oct. 21, 2001 at the age of 70. Rev. Mark Voll will officiate at the ceremony, with burial of cremains in Union Cemetery in Cedar Grove. Visitation will be at Eernisse Funeral Home in Port Washington on Friday from 4-8 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
Mrs. Schulze was born Nov. 27, 1930 in Cedar Grove, daughter of Harold and Sadie Weinrich Stokdyk. She married Howard Schulze at Friedens Ev. Church on Aug. 20, 1949. She worked with the Port Washington School District for many years in food service, and retired from working as a housekeeper for the Harborside Motel in 1993. She was a Cedar Lake Campus volunteer as well as a Boy Scout den mother. Mrs. Schulze was a longtime member of Friedens Ev. Church where she was active in the Women’s Guild and the church choir.

Survivors include husband Howard Schulze of Port Washington; children Sandra (Bill) Sellnow of Guntersville, Ala., Nancy (Bill) Bichler of Davenport, Iowa, Nola Heinowski of Oconomowoc, Donald (Judy) Schulze of Port Washington and Neil (Debbie) Schulze of Grafton; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother Claude (the late Grace) Stokdyk of Peru, Ind.; sister-in-law Audrey (Edward) Scheer of Cedarburg.

She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother Hugo and sister-in-law Elaine (the late Ralph) Laubenstein.

Delores "Dee" Jane (Richie) Penman

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church for Delores "Dee" Jane (Richie) Penman who died on Oct. 20, 2001 at the age of 74. Fr. Peter Szeszinski officiated at the ceremony. Interment was in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson.
Mrs. Penman was born Oct. 6, 1927, to Dominic and Rose (Dabruzzi) Richie of North Hudson. She attended St. Patrick’s Catholic Grade School and Hudson High School. On May 4, 1946, she married Gordon W. Penman of Hudson.

Dee was a well-known and much-loved lifelong resident of Hudson and an active participant in the community. She was an active member and dedicated volunteer for the Ladies VFW Auxiliary; the Hudson Public Schools as a room mother and in the PTA; the Senior Center; and St. Patrick’s church circle and catering group. She also provided child care for the children of many friends and neighbors. During the course of her life, her love of cooking led to jobs at P & R’s Café, Anns Café, Hudson Harbor, Dibbos Café, The Olde World Bake Shop, and private catering. Her great Italian cooking was enjoyed by many.

Survivors include: husband, Gordon; daughters Linda (Dennis) Smith of Cedarburg, Julie (Jeff Bentoff) Penman of Milwaukee, Mary (Roman) Tuler of Mukwonago, Cindy Parr of Minneapolis, Heidi (Mike) Jacobson of Spring Valley, Robin Rose, Kim Penman, and Holly (Brian) Marrs, all of Hudson; sons Dennis of St. Paul Park, Minn., Gary and Mark of Seeley, Terry of Minneapolis, and Tim (Jolene) of Hudson; grandchildren Jeff Penman of Juneau, Alaska, Neal Smith of Cedarburg, Jennie, Logan and Austin Jacobson of Spring Valley, Robert and Richard Tuler of East Troy, Dawn (Brian) Wade, Travis Rose, Cary Lamberta, Brett and Matt Parr, Marissa Cincoski, Heather and Holly Penman, Summer and Savanna Quinn and Seth Marrs, all of Hudson; great-grandchildren Kayla and Nadia Lamberta and Nolan Wade; all of Hudson.

She is further survived by sisters Phyllis Hagen of St. Paul, Minn., Peggy Sirianni of Menomonee Falls; Katie Caliguire of Columbia Heights and Evie (Glenn) Larson of North Hudson; sisters-in-law Eleanor (Dell) Penman and Char (Bob) Penman, both of Hudson; and special cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Preceding her in death are her sons Thomas George Penman and Jeffrey Kevin Penman, her sisters Louise (Reisinger) Lubich and Carmelle Richie, her infant brother Georgie Richie, and her parents Dominic and Rose Richie.

Memorials are preferred.

George G. Miller

Funeral services will be held at 7 tonight at First Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cedarburg for George G. Miller, who died on Oct. 22, 2001 at the age of 81.
Interment will be at Graceland Cemetery in Milwaukee. Visitation will be at the church today from 4 p.m. until time of service. Mueller Funeral Home of Cedarburg assisted the family.

Mr. Miller was born July 4, 1920 in Merrill to the late Oscar A. and Frieda (nee Suelflow) Miller. He married Marion (nee Kaul) on May 14, 1949 at Zebaoth Lutheran Church in Milwaukee.

He worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Cedarburg for 25 years. He was a long-time active member of the Prime Timers and a charter member of the Men’s Club at First Immanuel Lutheran Church and also active member of the AAL Branch 3120.

Survivors include wife Marion of Cedarburg; children Lynn Miller of Glendale, Mark Miller of Cedarburg; sister Margaret Miller of Medford; sister-in-law June (Martin) Nevers of Brown Deer.

He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorials to the First Immanuel Organ Fund appreciated.

Virginia C. Austreng

A funeral service will be held on Friday at 7 p.m. at Mueller Funeral Home, 979 12th Ave., Grafton, for Virginia C. Austreng (nee Ziemann), who died at St. Mary’s Ozaukee Hospital on Oct. 2, 2001 at the age of 85.
Visitation will be on Friday from 4 p.m. until time of service with burial the next morning at Immanuel Cemetery in Cedarburg.

Mrs. Austreng was born on July 27, 1916, the daughter of the late Emil and Jennie (nee Lemke) Ziemann. She married the late Willie Austreng on Dec. 11, 1987. She lived at Manchester Heights in Grafton and was formerly of Brown Deer.

She was a member of Abiding Savior Lutheran Church and the ladies aid. She also volunteered at Luther Manor in Milwaukee.

She is survived by a son, Robert (Patricia) Austreng; grandchildren Kevin and Brian Austreng and Julie (Bill) Edminster; great-grandchildren Jennifer and Daniel Edminster and a brother Paul (June) Ziemann.

Ruth B. Smith

Ruth B. Smith, nee Boehm, 84, of West Bend, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at the Samaritan Health Center.
She was born Sept. 22, 1917, in Shawano to the late Joseph and Anna (nee Rafoth) Boehm.

While living in Shawano, Ruth was employed as a dental assistant for Dr. W.W. Mitten, DDS.

In 1971 she moved to West Bend and was employed as a product inspector at Serigraph until her retirement in 1984.

Ruth was a member of the Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church in West Bend.

Survivors include her loving and faithful sister, Betty Koehler of West Bend; two nephews, Michael (Janice)) Koehler of West Bend and Robert (Christine) Koehler of Longmont, Colo.; a great-niece, Dawn Koehler of Longmont; two great-nephews, Christopher (Tammy) Koehler of West Bend and Robert Koehler Jr. of Longmont; a great-great-niece, Sydney Marie Koehler of West Bend; a great-great-nephew, Cody Gerard Taylor of Longmont; a daughter, Patricia Hanson of North Dakota; four grandchildren, Sarah, Peter, Paula and Susan; four great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were a sister, Audrey Laehn; two brothers-in-law, Raymond Koehler and Edward Laehn; and a nephew, James Koehler.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Oct. 29, at 7:30 p.m. at the Myrhum-Patten Funeral and Cremation Service, West Bend.

Rev. Verlin Wandrey of Fifth Avenue United Methodist Church, West Bend, will officiate, and burial will be Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. in Woodlawn Cemetery, Shawano.

Visitation at the funeral home will be Monday from 6 p.m. until the time of services.
