Donald C. Merten

Donald C. Merten, 40, of the town of West Bend, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at his residence.
He was born to Donald and Betty (Schwenter) Merten, and married Koziette M. Brown on March 10, 1990, at Calvary Memorial UCC of Wauwatosa.

He was a tile setter in the Milwaukee and surrounding areas.

Don loved nature to its fullest, was an avid bird watcher and planted many trees to attract birds to his yard.

Survivors include his wife; his parents, Donald and Betty Merten of Slinger; two brothers, Mark (Brenda) Merten of Phillips and David Merten of Slinger; his parents-in-law, Wesley and Pat Brown of West Bend; other relatives and friends.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date.

Cremation will take place at Paradise Cremation of West Bend, and inurnment will be in St. Peter's Cemetery.

The Phillip Funeral Home of Slinger is assisting the family.

Arthur H. Best

Arthur H. Best, 89, of Big Cedar Lake, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 28, 1912, in Milwaukee, to the late Arthur C. and Pearl (nee Heisig) Best, graduated from Shorewood High School and attended the University of Wisconsin.

On July 16, 1938, he married Alice A. Buege in Dubuque, Iowa. They resided in Whitefish Bay and summered on Big Cedar Lake where he had been summering with his parents since 1915.

In 1970 the couple moved to the lake permanently.

Art had been employed as the manager of Union Cemetery in Milwaukee until retiring in 1971.

Art was a member and past commodore of the Cedar Lake Yacht Club and started the Cedar Lake Yacht Club Sailing School, was a United States Yacht Racing Judge, member and past commodore of the Inland Lake Yacht Association, admiral of the ILYA of Bilge Pullers and recently was inducted into the ILYA Bilge Pullers Hall of Fame, was a life member of Sigma Chi fraternity, and life member of Ducks Unlimited.

He also enjoyed woodworking and was a world traveler.

Survivors include his wife; two children, Judith (Barry) Dukes of Fond du Lac and Arthur W. "Bill" (Jacqueline) Best of Big Cedar Lake; four grandchildren, Jeffrey (Helena) Dukes of Madison, Amy (Anthony) Clark of Fond du Lac. B.J. (Erin) Best of Cedarburg and Andrew Best of Big Cedar Lake; two great-grandsons, Evan and Austin Clark of Fond du Lac; a sister, Mary L. Best of Jackson; a sister-in-law, Kay Best of West Bend; a dear niece, Sue (Russ) Darrow of Big Cedar Lake; other relatives and many friends.

Preceding him in death were three sisters, Katherine Mertin, Gertrude Best and Jane Slocum, and a brother, John Best.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 11:30 a.m. at Myrhum-Patten Funeral and Cremation Service of West Bend.

Rev. Alan Lindberg of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Slinger, will officiate, and burial will follow in Washington County Memorial Park, West Bend.

Visitation at the funeral home will be Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

Memorials to Heartland Hospice or the Cedar Lake Conservancy are appreciated by the family.

Milton H. Weiss
Milton H. Weiss, 80, of West Bend, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at St. Joseph's Community Hospital.

He was born on April 7, 1921, in West Bend, to the late John and Bertha (nee Lother) Weiss, and during World War II served in the U.S. Army in the African and European Theaters.

After his marriage to June Benike on June 29, 1946, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, town of Herman in Dodge County, they made their home in West Bend and were members of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Milton worked for The West Bend Co. until retiring in 1984.

Survivors include his wife; five children, Wally (Nancy) of Oconto Falls, Nancy (special friend Jack Puerling) Bloom of Mayville, Doug (Karen) of Montello, Don (Adrienne) of Two Rivers and Ron (Melissa) of Fond du Lac; seven grandchildren, Jay Bloom, Zak (Courtney) Bloom, Laura Weiss, Lisa Weiss, Nick Weiss, Luke Weiss and Nate Weiss; two sisters, Delores "Dolly" Nehrbass of West Bend and Edythe "Mutz" (Chuck) Zastrow of West Bend; two brothers, Leslie "Windy" (Mildred) and Edgar, both of West Bend; two sisters-in-law, Harriet (Earl) Schaefer of Casper, Wyo. and Ethel Benike of West Bend; other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death were three sisters, Lillian Behling, Esther Boesewetter and Avis Spencer, and three brothers, John, Harold "Lefty" and Walter "Butch."

A Milton's request a private family memorial service will be held at the Myrhum-Patten Funeral Home, West Bend, with Rev. Terry Berg officiating.

Cremation took place at Myrhum-Patten Cremation Service with burial of the cremated remains in Washington County Memorial Park, West Bend.

Leona B. Delwiche
Leona B. Delwiche, nee Barron, 85, of West Bend, died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at the Cedar Lake Health Care Center.

She was born on Jan. 7, 1916, in Green Bay to the late Jacob and Sefronay (nee Schoultz) Barron, and married Ervin J. Delwiche on May 31, 1941, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Green Bay.

They moved to West Bend in 1942.

Leona worked at the former Olson Transportation Co., and then for many years at the Washington County Clerk of Courts office. She then worked at the Samaritan Health Center in patient activities.

After retiring in 1976 she became a Samaritan Home volunteer and always helped with the Samaritan rummage sale.

Leona was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church, the Christian Mothers Confraternity and the Women of the Moose.

She enjoyed reading, knitting and crocheting.

Survivors include four children, Peter Delwiche of Random Lake, Mary Lee (Paul) Geib of West Bend, E. Joseph (Ann) Delwiche of Green Bay and Rosemary (William) Lewis of Reading, Mass.; three grandchildren, Troy Delwiche of Random Lake, Andrew and Christopher Lewis of Reading, Mass.; two sisters, Genevieve Rolain of De Pere and Dolores Delforge of Green Bay; a sister-in-law, Estelle Barron of Milwaukee; other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Erv, in 1996; two sisters, Anne Barron and Christine Warner; and three brothers, Leo, Andrew and Martin.

A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 4:30 p.m. in the chapel at Cedar Bay with Rev. James Strupp presiding.

Cremation took place at Myrhum-Patten Cremation Service, West Bend, and burial of the cremated remains will be in Holy Angels Cemetery, West Bend.

Visitation at the Myrhum-Patten Funeral Home, West Bend, will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m.

Ervin J. Hoerig
Ervin J. Hoerig, 79, of West Bend died Tuesday, Oct. 30, at The Samaritan Health Center.

He was born to Raymond (Pauline Konrath) Hoerig on Nov. 19, 1921, in the town of Rubicon and lived in the Hartford area.

He married Arlene W. Wachs on Sept. 4, 1945, at Holy Angels Parsonage in West Bend, and moved to West Bend. He was a factory worker for the West Bend Co., retiring in 1984. He loved gardening and keeping his yard beautiful.

He is survived by three children, Joan (Sylvester) Dettmann of West Bend, James Hoerig of West Allis, and Linda Hoerig of Anchorage, Alaska; two grandchildren, Shawn Harris of Tempe, Ariz. and Jackie Harris of West Bend; two great-grandchildren, Jessica Harris of Hartford and Shelby Daley of West Bend; two sisters, Sister Ruth Hoerig of Milwaukee and LaVerne (Harry) Feucht of Clintonville; two brothers, Harvey (Betty) Hoerig of Kewaskum and Roy Hoerig of Milwaukee; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday at 7 p.m. at St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Church with Father Patrick Wendt officiating. Cremation will take place at Paradise Cremation Services with interment of ashes at Union Cemetery of Campbellsport. Visitation will be at the church only on Friday from 5 p.m. until time of Mass.

Memorials are appreciated. The Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend is assisting the family.

Doris A. Zier
Funeral Services will be held today at 6:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Cedarburg for Doris A. Zier, who died on Oct. 28, 2001 at the age of 75. Rev. Charles Turbin will officiate at the ceremony. In state at the church from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

The Mueller Funeral Home, Cedarburg is assisting the family.

Mrs. Zier was born June 22, 1926 in Pittsburgh, the daughter of the late Paul and Doris (Dickson) DeLeon.

She was a member of the Badger Association of the Blind, Interfaith Caregivers, OWLS, SDC and the Merrill Park tenant association.

Survivors include: children Daphne Truesdell of Minnesota, Diane Wilcox of Flint, Mich., David (Judy) of Eagle, Dana (Sherry) of Tennessee and Warren (Sandi) of Cedarburg.

She is further survived by 15 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to American Cancer Society, American Lung Association or Badger Association of the Blind appreciated.

Walter G. Schroeter

Funeral Services will be held today at 7 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Grafton, for Walter G. Schroeter, who died on Oct. 28, 2001 at the age of 86. Rev. John Suelflow will officiate at the ceremony, and burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. In state at the church Thursday from 4-7 p.m.
Mueller Funeral Home in Grafton is assisting the family.

Mr. Schroeter was born Aug. 22, 1915 on the family farmstead in the town of Grafton, to the late Fred and Emilie (Tetzlaff) Schroeter, and married Audrey (nee Winter) on Aug. 21, 1948 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sherman Center. She preceded him in death on Jan. 27, 1983.

He was a member at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Grafton, and the male choir at church. He was a member of Rose-Harms American Legion Post #355, Grafton.

Survivors include children Ken (Margaret) of Grafton, Joyce (Dave) Aiuppa of West Bend, Ronnie (Susie) of Sheboygan Falls, Marilyn (Russ) Roberts of San Ramon, Calif. and Bob (Gina) of Grafton; grandchildren Emily Schroeter, Suzanne Sorenson, Tyler Roberts, Zachary and Anthony Aiuppa, Maddie, Olivia and Jordan Schroeter, AJ Schroeter, Tim (Laurie) Fettig and Sarah Fettig; great-grandchildren Emily and Rachel Fettig; sisters Hulda Bickelhaupt of Milwaukee and Frieda Rathke of Grafton.

He is further survived by other relatives and friends.

Memorials to St. Paul Lutheran Church appreciated.
