He was born Dec. 8, 1922, in North Pomfret, Vt., to the late John and Janet Dana. Following military service in World War II, he received a bachelor of science from the University of Vermont and a master’s of science and Ph.D. from Iowa State University, all in horticulture. He joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1952. He served as UW horticulture department chairman from 1973-1978 and upon his retirement in 1987 was appointed emeritus professor. He was a member and officer of numerous honorary societies and was elected a Fellow of the American Society for Horticultural Science in 1983.

During his 35 years as an instructor, Dr. Dana’s teaching abilities and classroom achievements were recognized with teaching awards from the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences in 1971 and the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983. He also received the University of Wisconsin-Madison Amoco Teaching Award in 1984 and the J.S. Donald Short Course Teaching Award in 1987. His horticulture society and industry honors included the Distinguished Services Award as an associate editor from the American Society for Horticulture Science (ASHS) from 1981-1984, the ASHS Outstanding Undergraduate Educator Award in 1986, the Leadership Recognition Award from the Wisconsin Berry Growers Association in 1988, the Award of Appreciation for 35 years of service from the Wisconsin Apple Growers Association in 1988, the Educational Services Award from the Wisconsin Cranberry Growers Association in 1988, and the Service to Industry Award for outstanding service to the cranberry industry in Wisconsin by the Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association presented in 2001.

Dana established a program for herbicide evaluation in the state’s cranberry and strawberry industries and was instrumental in providing data leading to the label registration and safe use recommendations for several products that are standard in the industry today. His analysis of the weed-control problem in cranberries led to studies of plant nutrition that have improved fertilizer practices in the field and increased yields per acre.

He was a popular speaker at fruit grower meetings throughout the Midwest and received career awards from the Wisconsin Berry Growers Association and the Wisconsin Apple Growers Association. The widely published "Ten P’s to Profit," a presentation outlining the principles supporting successful pick-your-own harvest of strawberries was first given by Dana to a grower meeting at Black River Falls in the late 1950s. Dana was also instrumental in a Federal Strawberry Cultivar Selection Program developed cooperatively with the United States Department of Agriculture. The selections from that program merited cultivar status. He authored many scholarly publications, chapters, articles and teaching manuals, primarily in fruit culture.
