Steven R. “Duke” Balon

Steven R. “Duke” Balon , 89, of Jackson, formerly of West Bend, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at St. Joseph’s Community Hospital of West Bend.

He was born to Andrew (Catherine Vozar) Balon on Jan. 21, 1912, and raised in Milwaukee and married Anna M. Filo on July 12, 1941, at Holy Angels Catholic Church in West Bend. After their marriage, the couple lived in Milwaukee where he worked at Allis-Chalmers of West Allis for more than 30 years, retiring in 1960. He loved hunting and fishing and was a past member of the National Rifle Association.

His wife Anna died on April 8, 1999.

He is survived by one daughter, Patricia (Richard) Krueger of West Bend; one daughter-in-law, Beverly Balon of West Bend; five grandchildren, Steve (Shelley) Krueger of West Bend, Kari Krueger (Gary Dettmann) of Cascade, Anthony (Annie Fielder) Balon of West Bend, Tina (Jeff) Mayer of the town of Farmington, Tracy Balon (Brian Heinonen) of West Bend; one great-granddaughter, Karly Krueger; special friend Bernice Luther of Jackson; and all the staff at Jackson Auto Service. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one son, Robert; one brother, John; and two sisters, Kate and Anna.

Funeral Services will be on Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at 1:30 p.m. at Phillip Funeral Home Chapel of West Bend with Father Patrick Wendt officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

Entombment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery of Milwaukee at 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 24, 2001.

The Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend is assisting the family.

Dorion Rettmann

Dorion Rettmann, 87, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001 at Cedar Springs Health & Rehabilitation Center in Cedarburg.
He was born on Sept. 30, 1914 to the late Fred and Adela (nee Eickstead) Rettmann and married the late Althea (nee Buch) on Oct. 25, 1936 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Grafton.

Survivors include his children, John Rettmann of Hiles, Margaret (Gene) Jones of Jackson and Elsa (Reno) Dippmann of Cedarburg; and sister-in-law Martha Viesselmann of Barton. He is further survived by seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral service was held on Dec. 22, 2001 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Grafton. Interment was at the church cemetery. Mueller Funeral Home, Cedarburg, assisted the family.

Memorials to St. Paul Lutheran Church are appreciated.

John Robert Beck
John Robert Beck, 80, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Logan Acres in Bellefontaine.

He was born Oct. 2, 1921, in Bloomfield, Ky. to the late Jacob and Susan (Bacheldor) Beck and married Marjorie Inman Beck on May 23, 1942, in Findlay, Ohio. She passed away in 1987.

He graduated from Findlay High School in 1938, attended Findlay College and received a law degree from Ohio Northern University in 1948. He came to Bellefontaine in 1948 and practiced law with Beck, Beck, Hawkins until 1998.

He was a lifetime member of the VFW, American Legion, Elks, Eagles, K of C, Ohio State Bar Association, Logan County Bar Association, first elected municipal court judge in Logan County 1954-'65, retired U.S. Army Lt. Col and retired National Guard Lt. Col., veteran of World War II, serving in North Africa and Italy 104 Infantry Division, Civil War historian, member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, was asked to speak on President Day in Logan and Champaign county and was an avid opera lover.

Survivors include sons, Command Sgt. Major John Jacob (Debi) Beck of the U.S. Army of San Antonio, Texas and Master Sgt. Daniel I. (Margaret) Beck of the U.S. Air Force of Dover, Del.; daughters, Susan M. (Robert Anderson) Beck of Jackson, Ann E. Beck of Bellefontaine, M. Fran (William Newport) Beck of Columbus, Ohio and Joan R. (Norbert Wagner) Beck of West Bend; a brother, William A. Beck of San Antonio; a sister, Elizabeth White of Savannah, Ga.; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were two brothers, Daniel H. and Jacob Beck, and a sister, Pauline Sterner.

Memorial services were held at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Bellefontaine, on Friday, Dec. 21, with Rev. Henry F. Albietz officiating.

Memorial contributions to the Families of Survivors of 9-11 or the United Negro College Fund are appreciated.

The Eichholtz Funeral Home, Bellefontaine, served the family.

Atty. James C. Sarafiny
Atty. James C. Sarafiny, 70, of the town of Erin, passed away on Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at his residence surrounded by his family.

He was born Jan. 26, 1931, in Iron River, Mich., to the late Albert and Rose (nee Golas) Sarafiny, and married Ione Mason on Aug. 3, 1979 in Hartford.

Jim served his country in the U.S. Marines, serving 13 months during the Korean Conflict where he entered as a tech sergeant and left as a second lieutenant. He was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant on Sept. 16, 1955.

He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin and his law degree in August, 1960. He was admitted to the State of Wisconsin Bar on April 4, 1961.

Jim came to Hartford in 1962 and became a partner in the Amidon, Smith and Sarafiny Law Office. He entered his own private practice in August of 1996 where he practiced until the time of his death.

Jim was a member of the Marine Corps Tankers Association, the Courtney-Carr-Milner American Legion Post #19, and was commander in 1962. He served as judge advocate of the Washington County American Legion and Courtney-Carr-Milner American Legion from 1999 to the present.

Jim was a past president of the Washington County Bar Association and a member of the Wisconsin State Bar.

He was a life member of the University of Wisconsin Alumni Association, and other memberships included the Pike Lake Sportsman Club, past president of the Hartford Rotary Club, Hartford Hospital Board for nine years and chairman of the Board for two years, and the town of Erin Veterans Memorial Committee.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Jane Sarafiny and Elizabeth (Monte Raker) Sarafiny, both of Madison, and Margaret (Thom Engles) Sarafiny of Belgrade, Mont.; a son, Joseph Frederick III (Julie) Milner of Waukesha; two grandchildren, Emily Rose Milner and Joseph Frederick Milner IV; his mother-in-law, Mabel Mason of Hartford; his former wife, Gloria Babbit of Madison; other relatives and friends.

Military funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 26, at the Shimon Funeral Home, Hartford.

The family will greet relatives and friends at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family are appreciated and will be given to numerous charities and organizations on behalf of the Sarafiny family.

A special thanks to a superb lady, Carolyn Emmer, Jim's legal secretary for 29 years. Her friendship, dedication, support and knowledge are deeply appreciated by the Sarafiny family and Mabel Mason.

Harold W. "Jake" Shaw Sr.
Harold W. "Jake" Shaw Sr., 77, of West Bend, formerly of West Salem, Wis., died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 19, 1924, in Richland County, town of Eagle, Wis., to the late Leo and Elizabeth (Simpson) Shaw, and was raised in Hartford.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters.

He married Nancy A. Piscitello on Feb. 10, 1945, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Easton, Pa., and after the service the couple lived in Hartford, Milwaukee, Beaver Dam and West Salem.

Jake had a career in law enforcement and later worked as director of security for the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

He was a life member of the VFW of Hartford Post 8834, and was an avid Green Bay Packer fan.

Survivors include his wife; two children, Harold W. Jr. (Janice) Shaw of West Bend and Keith Shaw of Chandler, Ariz.; four grandchildren, Michelle, Jill, Christen and Christopher; other relatives and friends.

Preceding him in death was a son, Terrence.

Private services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 25, at 10:45 a.m. at his home, with Rev. Louis Riesch officiating.

Cremation will take place at Paradise Cremation Service of West Bend, and interment of ashes will be in St. Kilian's Cemetery, Hartford.

The Phillip Funeral Home, West Bend, is assisting the family.

Eldon O. "Buck" Spradau
Eldon O. "Buck" Spradau, 81, of Campbellsport, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at Hospice Home of Hope in Fond du Lac.

He was born on Feb. 8, 1922, in Elmore to the late Arnold and Ella (Klein) Spradau, and on March 20, 1943, married Vera Ford at St. Matthew's Church, Campbellsport. She passed away on July 16, 1985. He married Dolores Heisler on Nov. 12, 1988 at St. Matthew's Church, Campbellsport.

Eldon entered the U.S. Army on March 17, 1943, serving in Normandy, Northern France and the Rhineland. He received his honorable discharge on Jan. 23, 1946.

Starting in 1946 he worked for the village of Campbellsport as clerk, assessor, treasurer, head of the water department and police chief.

He retired in 1990 and enjoyed fishing, golfing, traveling to Arizona, gardening, playing cards and little trips to Keshena.

Eldon was a 49-year member of the Campbellsport Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance Service for which he served as secretary for a number of years. He was also a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Campbellsport.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Cheryle (David) Schellhaass of Campbellsport; a son, Thomas (Pam) Spradau of Bollingbrook, Ill.; a stepson, Rick (Barb) Heisler of Campbellsport; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Marvin (Margie) Spradau of Mayville; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Dec. 28 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Campbellsport, following a prayer service at 10 a.m. at the Twohig Funeral Home, Campbellsport.

Rev. Neil Zinthefer will officiate, and burial will follow in the parish cemetery.

Visitation at the funeral home will be Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to the Hospice Home of Hope, Fond du Lac, the Campbellsport Volunteer Fire Department, St. Matthew's Church or the Campbellsport Scholarship Foundation.
