Michael Alan Kuerschner

Michael Alan Kuerschner, age 33, of Buffalo, Minn., formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Cedarburg, died Dec. 25, 2001 at North Memorial Medical Center, Minneapolis from complications resulting from ulcer disease.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Chaska, Minn. with the Reverend David Milz of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Kimball, Minn., officiating. Michael’s uncles, David W. Kuerschner and Reverend Victor Kuerschner, assisted with the service. Casketbearers were his fraternity brothers Adam Cox, Kevin Cox, Dean Larsen, Brian Palmer, Rob Mason and friend Dewey Larsen. Cremation was at Lakewood Crematory, Minneapolis.

Michael was born May 30, 1968 in Milwaukee to John and Shirley (Schimelpfenig) Kuerschner. He was the oldest of four children. Michael was baptized and confirmed at First Immanuel Lutheran Church, Cedarburg. He was a graduate of Cedarburg High School and the University of Wisconsin, Platteville, where he was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. On Aug. 16, 1993, Michael married Patti Curran in Galena, Ill. They had two children. Michael was employed by United Defense, Fridley, Minn. and formerly employed by Rockwell-Collins, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Michael enjoyed spending time flying recreational aircraft and snowboarding with his wife. Michael was also an avid Green Bay Packers fan. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and especially his children.

Michael was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Elford Schimelpfenig and paternal grandparents, Reverend Edwin and Olivia Kuerschner.

Survivors include his wife, Patti; son, Seth, age 11 months; daughter, Naomi, age 2 years; parents John and Shirley Kuerschner of Naples, Fla., brothers, Kevin Kuerschner of Cedarburg, Nathan Kuerschner of Cedarburg and his fiance, Melissa Nemetz of Grafton; sister, Kathryn Kuerschner of Cedarburg; maternal grandmother, Gladys Schimelpfenig of Chaska, Minn.; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Pat and Marie Curran of Berlin; and many relatives and friends. He will be remembered in the hearts of many.

Funeral arrangements were made with the Bertas Funeral Home of Chaska, Minn.

Erna E. Hafemann

A funeral service was held on Dec. 28 at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church for Erna E. Hafemann, who died on Dec. 26 at the age of 78. Interment was at the church cemetery. Mueller Funeral Home, Cedarburg, assisted the family with arrangements.
Survivors include: brother Edmund Ponath; sister Elaine (Jerome) Dietrich.

Further survived by sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Wilbert and brother Elmer Ponath.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church (Pleasant Valley Road) are appreciated.

Dorothy E. Hadler

A funeral service was held on Dec. 29 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Grafton for Dorothy E. Hadler who died on Dec. 24, 2001, at the age of 72. Interment was at Lakefield Cemetery. Mueller Funeral Home of Grafton assisted the family.
Mrs. Hadler was born May 18, 1929, daughter of Elmer and Elsie (nee Kroening) Viesselmann. She married Eugene Hadler on May 19,1951 and they were members of St. Paul Lutheran Church for many years.

Survivors include: husband Eugene Hadler; son Brian Hadler; daughter Bonnie (Bradley) Guse; grandchildren Britta and Brady; brothers Elmer (Norma) Visselmann, Arthur (Marjorie) Visselmann; sister Ruth (Herbert) Mentzel.

She was preceded in death by brothers Louis and Herbert, sister Laura Kaul and her parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Paul Lutheran Church are appreciated.

Muriel L. Worzalla-Skopek

Muriel L. Worzalla-Skopek, nee Waitzmann, 78, of West Bend, formerly of Cedarburg, died on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at her residence.
She was born Jan. 3, 1923, in Milwaukee, to the late Frederick and Alma (Krueger) Waitzmann, and married John A. Worzalla on Sept. 18, 1943, in Milwaukee.

After their marriage the couple lived in Milwaukee and moved to Cedarburg in 1956. Her husband passed away on June 27, 1979.

On Oct. 5, 1985, she married Michael Skopek at St.Francis Catholic Church of Cedarburg. He passed away in August, 1995.

She moved to Cedar Ridge, West Bend, in 1990.

She was a member of St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Church of West Bend, and was very active in various organizations, including the Legion of Mary, Women's Aglow, and was a volunteer at Lasata Place of Peace, Cedar Lake Home and Cedar Ridge.

Survivors include five children, John (Corinne) Worzalla of Indiana polis, Ind., Gloria (Michael) Zehner-Berner of West Bend, Marilyn (Jim) Erickson of Springfield, Mo., Ken (Betty) Worzalla of Fredonia and Mike (Sue) Worzalla of Cedarburg; five stepchildren, Jerry (Chris) Skopek of Cedarburg, Jim (Carol) Skopek of Troy, Mich., Sue (Dean) Schlapman of Pardeeville, John (Roselyn) Skopek of Germantown and Brian Skopek of Milwaukee ; 43 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anita (Glen) Shafer and Carol (Pat) McNally, both of Kansas City, Mo.; three brothers, Kenneth, Ernie (Judy) and Frank (Barb), all of Kansas City, Mo.; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were three sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Dec. 31, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Church of West Bend.

Father Patrick Wendt will officiate, and interment will be in St. Francis Borgia Cemetery.

Visitation at the Phillip Funeral Home, West Bend, will be Monday from 9 a.m. until closing of the casket prayers at 10 a.m.

Memorials are appreciated.

Matilda B. "Tillie" Laughlin

Matilda B. "Tillie" Laughlin, nee Bernard, 96, of West Bend, formerly of South Milwaukee, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at the Cedar Lake Health Care Center.
She was born on Aug. 30, 1905, in St. Louis, Mo., to the late Christian and Clara (nee Schallenbach) Bernard.

At a young age she moved to Milwaukee and worked as an accountant at Bucyrus Erie Corp. until 1930.

On June 28, 1930, she married Del Laughlin in South Milwaukee. They made their home in South Milwaukee and together owned and operated Laughlin Appliance Shop until Del's death in 1959.

Tillie continued to operate the appliance shop until retiring in 1973.

She moved to West Bend in 1986. She was a very active former member of First Congregational Church in South Milwaukee and a current member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Kohlsville.

Survivors include four children, Mary Ann (Charles) Taylor of Danville, Ill., Alice Aylesworth of Syracuse, N.Y., David (Vicki) Laughlin of White Bear Lake, Minn. and Grace (David) Holm of Moose Lake, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Anna Bernard of Laguna Woods, Calif.

Preceding her in death were a sister, Margaret Durell; a brother, Frank; and a son-in-law, Arthur Aylesworth.

At Tillie's request, cremation will take place at Myrhum-Patten Funeral and Cremation Service, with the cremated remains to be buried in the First Congregational Church Cemetery, South Milwaukee.

A memorial service, to be announced at a later date, will be held at the Cedar Lake Campus.

The family requests memorials be sent to Partners in Caring at the Cedar Lake Campus.

Mary K. Matenaer

Mary K. Matenaer, nee Staehler, 96, of West Bend, died on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at the Samaritan health Center.
She was born Jan. 29,1905, in Kewaskum, to the late John and Elizabeth (nee Rodenkirch) Staehler.

After her marriage to Edwin J. Matenaer on May 26, 1925, at Holy Trinity Church, Kewaskum, they settled on the Matenaer Homestead farm in the town of Barton.

Upon their retirement from farming in 1957, the couple settled in the former village of Barton.

Mary loved gardening, crocheting, knitting and cooking.

She was a member of the Apostolate of Suffering and the Christian Women's Confraternity.

Her husband passed away on Dec. 10, 1980.

Survivors include seven children, Leona (Allan) Batzler, Francis (Betty), Norman (Gene), Steve (Margaret), all of West Bend, Ralph (Estelle) of Kewaskum, Mary Yarnig of Menomonee Falls and Carol (Don) Winninghoff of Appleton; a son-in-law, Edward Volm of Kewaskum; 31 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Regina Staehler of Kewaskum; other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were a daughter, Adeline Volm; a son-in-law, Ray Yarnig; two sisters and five brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at 7 p.m. at St. Mary's Immaculate Conception Church, West Bend.

Father Patrick Wendt will be the presider, and burial will be in St. Mary's (old) Cemetery.

Visitation at the church only will be Wednesday from 4 to 6:45 p.m.

The Schmidt Funeral Home, West Bend, is serving the family.

The family wishes to extend their grateful thanks to the staff on the third floor at the Samaritan Health Center for the loving and gentle care given to Mary.

May "Kay" Kathleen Martin

May "Kay" Kathleen Martin, 44, of Little Chute, died suddenly Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, in Appleton.
Mary Kay was born Aug. 24, 1957, in Hinsdale, Ill, to Clifford John and Clarice Marie (nee Ragan) Hickman.

She graduated from the Lyons Township High School in LaGrange, Ill. in 1975 and attended Southern Illinois University.

On Nov. 30, 1991, she married Tim Martin in West Bend.

Mary Kay owned and operated Professional Bookkeeping Service LLC in Little Chute for six years.

Survivors include her husband; three children, Brooke Lee Martin of West Allis, Chad Allen (Cathi) Martin of Jackson and James Michael Littrell of Hartford; her grandson, Dakota James Przybyla of West Allis; her parents, Clifford and Clarice Hickman of Waukesha; six brothers and sisters, David John (Brigitte) Hickman of St. Nazianz, Susan Mary (Mark) Sheldon of Burlington, Judith Ann Hickman of Davie, Fla., Paul Stephen (Ruth) Hickman of Ortonville, Mich., Theresa Lynn (Randall) Peterman of Cary, Ill. and Steven Michael (Erika) Hickman of Waukesha, along with many beloved nieces and nephews, other relatives and many deer friends.

She will also be missed by her beloved dog and companion, Brandy.

Preceding her in death were her first husband, James Leo Littrell on Sept. 2, 1992; and a niece, Katrina Alexandria Hickman on Sept. 22, 1994.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at 7 p.m. at St. William's Catholic Church, 440 N. Moreland Blvd., Waukesha.

Father Mark Payne will be the celebrant, and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Milwaukee.

Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 4 p.m. until the time of Mass.

Memorials in Mary's name may be directed to the Make A Wish Foundation, 13195 W. Hampton Ave., Butler, Wis. 53007 or to the Ronald McDonald House, 8948 Watertown Plank Road, Milwaukee, Wis. 53226.

The Cesarz, Charapata & Zinnecker Funeral Home, Waukesha, is serving the family.

Darlene F. "Peggy" Rusch

Darlene F. "Peggy" Rusch, nee Mauck, 70, of West Bend, was taken by God to be in his eternal home on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001.
She was born Nov. 11, 1931, in Hill City, Kan., to the late Joel and Elizabeth (Bugsley) Mauck and married Roger L. Rusch on Oct. 30, 1954 in Longmount, Colo.

She worked at the West Bend School District in food service for over 27 years, retiring in 1990.

She was a Pink Lady and delivered Meals on Wheels for St. Joseph's Community Hospital, and enjoyed playing cards with bridge being her favorite.

Survivors include her loving husband; a son, Ricky (Deborah) Rusch of West Bend and two precious grandchildren, Collin and Taylor Rusch.

Being the youngest of 15 childen, she is survived by a sister, Betty Shell of Casper, Wyo; a brother-in-law, Art Adams of Las Vegas, Nev.; four sisters-in-law, Erleen (LeRoy) Brehmer of Appleton, Verna Mauck of Hill City, Kan., Gladys Mauck of Phoenix, Ariz. and Charlotte (Larry) Hoffmann of West Bend.

She is further survived by nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

Preceding her in death were 13 brothers and sisters.

She was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, West Bend, and the Women of the Moose of West Bend, #1398.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 2, at 7:30 p.m. at the Phillip Funeral Home, West Bend.

Rev. Sharon Stier will officiate, and entombment will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday in Washington County Memorial Park, West Bend.

Visitaton at the funeral home will be Wednesday from 5 p.m. until the time of services.

Dale A. Briggs

Dale A. Briggs, 74, of Fond du Lac, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at the Clement Zablocki Veterans Administration Center, Milwaukee.
He was born May 21, 1927, in the town of Lamartine, to the late Lynn and Elsie (Phelps) Briggs.

Dale was a graduate of Fond du lac Senior High School and a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army.

He was service manager for Culligan for 23 years, an apartment manager in West Bend, and while residing in California he worked for Pinkerton Security. Most recently he drove for Johnson Bus Service, Fond du Lac, and Rare Elegance Limousine Service in Oshkosh.

Dale was a member of Salem United Methodist Church in Lamartine, and a member of Bohlman-Grimes VFW Post #1904 in Fond du Lac.

He volunteered at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, helping with golf.

Dale enjoyed roller skating, was an avid motorcycle rider, ham radio operator, and enjoyed being a member of the "Birthday Club."

He was a member of the Communication Patrol in West Bend.

Survivors include a daughter, Ellen (Joseph) Bednarek of Fond du Lac; two sons, Jerry (Deborah) Briggs and Thomas (Jeanne) Briggs, both of Butler; two stepsons, Joe (Norma) Stein of Fremont, Calif. and Steve (Mary) Stein of West Bend; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Bernice (Les) Egbert of McLean, Va.; a brother, Alvin (Virginia) Briggs of Algoma; two sisters-in-law, Helen Keller of West Bend and Josephine Totsky of Milwaukee; nieces; nephews; and special friends.

Visitation at the Uecker-Witt Funeral Home, Fond du Lac, will be Monday, Dec. 31, from 9 until the funeral services at 11:30 a.m.

Rev. Barry Watson will officiate, and Trier-Puddy American Legion Post #75 will conduct military services. Cremation will follow the services.
