Dorothy G. Hatzinger
Dorothy G. Hatzinger, 80, of 305 Jefferson St., Beaver Dam, died peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at the Beaver Dam Care Center.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m., at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Beaver Dam. The Rev. Daniel Massie will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peter's cemetery, Beaver Dam.

Mrs. Hatzinger was born on March 10, 1920, in Columbus, the daughter of Edward and Lena (Schmidt) Reinert. She was married on Nov. 27, 1945, to Howard Hatzinger in Columbus.

Mrs. Hatzinger graduated from Columbus High School and attended Columbia Normal College for two years. She then taught country schools in the Columbus area and at Fall River Elementary School. She then worked as a homemaker as well as working at St. Vincent de Paul. She also had the privilege of working as a housekeeper for the Father at St. Patrick's Rectory. She took great pride in the position as she was working for the Lord. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched.

Survivors include her husband, Howard Hatzinger, Beaver Dam; four sons, John Hatzinger, Carson City, Nev., Marc (Donna) Hatzinger, Paul Hatzinger, and Hugh (Brenda) Hatzinger, all of Beaver Dam; one sister, Eleanor Ehrke, Beaver Dam; six grandchildren, Twila, Megan, Kara, Amanda, Matt and Kelsey, all of Beaver Dam; one nephew, Tom (Lisa) ` great nieces, cousins and distant relatives in Switzerland.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and an infant brother.

Friends may call on Sunday, Jan. 14, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Murray Community Funeral Home, Beaver Dam.

Memorials may be made to the family.

David R. Thomas
David R. Thomas, 72, of 123 Cleveland St., Beaver Dam, died on Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He had fought a long and courageous battle with cancer.

The funeral will be held on Sunday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m., at the Koepsell Funeral Home, Beaver Dam. The Rev. Jack Harrison will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens, township of Trenton. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Beaver Dam American Legion Post No. 146.

Mr. Thomas was born on Sept. 20, 1928, in Cresco, Iowa, the son of David J. and Dina (Jones) Thomas. He was married on May 10, 1951, to Mabel Williams at Wayland Academy Chapel.

Mr. Thomas was a professional truck driver for Beaver Dam Transport and Consolidated Freightways. He was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church, Beaver Dam. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953, then joined the Reserves from 1953 to 1957. During his illness he had strong support from the staff of Home Health Care and his loving family ensuring his wishes, comfort and dignity were taken care of right through until his last breath.

Survivors include his wife, Mabel Thomas, Beaver Dam; his children, Dennis (Jane) Thomas, Fort Worth, Texas, Debbie (Roger) Derr, Randolph, Diane (special friend, Michael Bowser) Thomas, Beaver Dam, and Dale (fiancee, Cheryl Tarpey) Thomas, Orfordville; two brothers, Lloyd (Virginia) Thomas, and Mike (special friend, Joan Schultz) Thomas, both of Beaver Dam; seven grandchildren, Nicole, Stacey and Desiree Thomas, Adam Derr, Christina Tarpey, and India and Mariah Thomas; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one granddaughter, Jennifer Casperson.

Friends may call on Sunday, Jan. 14, from 4 p.m. until the time of service, at the Koepsell Funeral Home, Beaver Dam.

Andrew E. Welch
LOWELL - Andrew E. "Andy" Welch, 68, of Lowell, died on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m., at First United Church of Christ, Reeseville. The Rev. Jude Jacobson will officiate. Burial will be in Lowell cemetery.

Mr. Welch was born on May 4, 1932, in Ward, Ala., the son of James and Mamye (Lowe) Welch. He was married on Dec. 18, 1954, to Marion Huebel in Lowell.

Mr. Welch was the chief of police in Reeseville for many years and active in promoting law enforcement. He operated a truck stop and a logging business with his brother in Alabama. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was also a member of the Lions Club of Lowell-Reeseville.

Survivors include his wife, Marion Welch, Lowell; three daughters, Christine (Allen Jr.) Raabe, Reeseville, Terry (Mike) Wermuth, Waterloo, and Pamela (Pete) Rennhack, Reeseville; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; three sisters and other relatives.

Friends may call on Friday, Jan. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Murray Community Funeral Home, Reeseville.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary's Hospital of Madison.

Ruth C. Schultz
RIO/LODI - Ruth Caroline Schultz, 93, of Rio, died on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Lodi Good Samaritan Center.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m., at the Vangen Funeral Home, Rio. The Rev. C. Keith Epps will officiate. Burial will follow in Greenwood cemetery, North Leeds.

Mrs. Schultz was born on Oct. 12, 1907, in Lewiston, the daughter of John and Amelia Graack. She was married on Dec. 18, 1928, to Hobart Schultz in Lewiston.

Survivors include two children, Charles (Sally) Schultz, Rio, and Caroline (William) Bell, Arlington; one brother, Ernest (Betty) Graack, Cambria; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Dorothy, and her husband, Hobart, on Dec. 31, 1994.

Friends may call on Saturday, Jan. 13, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service, at the Vangen Funeral Home, Rio.

Memorials may be made to Lodi Good Samaritan Center.

Friar Russan Cole
CAREY, OHIO - Friar Russan Cole, 75, OFM Conv., baptized Lawrence John, formerly of Waupun, died on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, in Carey, Ohio.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 10 a.m., at Mount Saint Francis, Mount Francis, Ind. Burial will be in Friars cemetery, Mount Saint Francis, Ind.

Father Russan was born on May 18, 1926, in Decatur, Ill.

Father Russan was a member of the Franciscian Order. He began his seminary education at Mount Saint Francis Seminary, Mount Saint Francis, Ind., in 1938. He entered the novitiate for Our Lady of Consolation Province in July of 1944. He completed his theological studies in Fribourg, Switzerland. He professed his solemn vows at the tomb of Saint Francis in Assisi, Italy.

Friar Cole was ordained to the priesthood on March 10, 1951, at the Church of St. Michael, Fribourg, Switzerland. He was a professor of philosophy and theology at Assumption Seminary in Chaska, Minn. He also taught classes at St. Catherine's College, St. Paul, Minn. He was Guardian of Franciscan Retreats in Prior Lake, Minn., and associate pastor in several parishes. He was pastor and guardian of St. Ann's Parish, Chicago Heights. In 1988, he was Guardian of Mount Saint Francis, Ind. In August 1990, he was pastor and guardian of St. Joseph's Parish, Waupun.

Survivors include one sister, Catherine Chicoine, Libertyville, Ill.; one brother, Donald E. Cole, Dalton City, Ill.; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Reception of the body and wake service for Father Russan will be held on Friday, Jan. 12, at 7:30 p.m., at Mount Saint Francis Chapel, Mount Saint Francis, Ind.

The people of St. Brendan's, St. Mary's and St. Joseph's are in the process of planning a memorial service for Fr. Russan Cole, who served here for many years. Anyone wishing to be a part of planning the service can call St. Joseph's Rectory at 324-5400.

Wetzel Esque Jr.
Wetzel Esque Jr., 70, of 146 Judson Drive, Apt. C, Beaver Dam, formerly of Chicago, died on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at Hillside Manor Nursing Home.

A memorial service will be held in West Virginia, at a later date.

Mr. Esque was born on March 21, 1930, in West Virginia, the son of Wetzel Sr. and Bertha (Kilgore) Esque. He was married to Elmay Keske in Chicago.

Survivors include his wife, Elmay Esque, Beaver Dam; one son, Keith Esque, Texas; two daughters, Donna Lily, West Virginia, and Gina (Larry) Walker, North Carolina; one step-son, Kenneth (Sue) Strahota, Reeseville; two sisters, Mary (George) Duncan, West Virginia, and Sue (Roger) Atkins, Cleveland, Ohio; one brother, Paul Esque, West Virginia; four grandchildren; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters.

Phyllis M. "Mickey" Kohl
Phyllis M. "Mickey" Kohl, 52, of 400 Grove St., Beaver Dam, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at her home.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 11:30 a.m., at St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam. The Rev. Philip Heyer will officiate. Cremation will take place.

Mrs. Kohl was born on Aug. 2, 1948, in Beaver Dam, the daughter of Raymond and Muriel (Hammer) Schroeder.

Phyllis was a 1966 graduate of Watertown High School, and worked at Bank One in Beaver Dam for 22 years, then at Farmers and Merchants Bank in Friesland. She was a member of St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam. She was an avid Harley Davidson motorcycle enthusiast, enjoyed riding her Harley Hog, and a past member of the Harley chapter of Beaver Dam. She enjoyed her family and was a proud mother and grandmother. She enjoyed gardening very much, and was a Mary Kay consultant. She was also a member of ABATE. Although she will be greatly missed by her family and friends, her memories and spirits will be ever present.

A final Harley ride will be held in her honor at a later date.

Survivors include one daughter, Bari (Chad) Vredeveld, Beaver Dam; two grandsons, Connor Michael Vredeveld and Brock Christian Vredeveld; one sister, Nancy Schoeffling, Watertown; two brothers, Raymond Jr. (Joann) Schroeder, Adams-Friendship, and Robert (Shirley) Schroeder, Watertown; close friend and cousin, Jeanine "Jean" Klas, Beaver Dam; her special cat, Mad City Kitty; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Darlene Bourgeois.

Family will receive family and friends on Saturday, Jan. 13, from 10 a.m. until the time of service, at St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam.

The Murray Community Funeral Home, Beaver Dam, is serving the family.

Maureen M. Braaksma
Maureen Mae Braaksma, 63, of 110 Industrial Drive, Beaver Dam, died on Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at University Hospital, Madison.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m., at Grace Presbyterian Church, Beaver Dam. The Rev. Jack Harrison will officiate. Cremation will take place following the service.

Mrs. Braaksma was born on April 8, 1937, in Friesland, the daughter of Tuenis and Harriet (Bossenbroek) Tillema.

Mrs. Braaksma owned and operated Friesland Foods for many years. She was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church, Beaver Dam. She enjoyed volunteering her time at Hospice, Beaver Dam Community Hospital, Stephen Ministries, Salvation Army and as an elementary tutor in Beaver Dam.

Survivors include her children, Brian (Jan) Braaksma, Randolph, Suanne (Mike) Wilson, Niceville, Fla., and Robert Braaksma, Gilbert, Ariz.; one sister, Cherrill Closs, Milwaukee; her mother, Harriet Tillema; five grandchildren, Melissa, Laura, and Amy Braaksma, and Yancy and Kyle Wilson; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her father.

Friends may call on Friday, Jan. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Koepsell Funeral Home, Beaver Dam, and on Saturday, Jan. 13, from 10 a.m. until the time of service, at Grace Presbyterian Church, Beaver Dam.

Elmer L. Kranz
MADISON/EAST BRISTOL - Elmer L. Kranz, 82, died on Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 11 a.m., at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, East Bristol. The Rev. Edward Erbe will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph's cemetery, East Bristol.

Mr. Kranz was born on Nov. 23, 1918, in Hampden, the son of Nicholas and Mary (Link) Kranz. He was married on Aug. 27, 1976, to Mary Philumalee, at St. Rafael's Catholic Church, Madison.

Mr. Kranz farmed all of his life in Hampden and did custom work for various farms.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Kranz; four children, Janet (Duane) McCarthy, Sun Prairie, Patricia (Barry) Neuhaus, Bothell, Wash., Thomas (Linda) Kranz, Sun Prairie, and Robert (Pat) Kranz, Columbus; two step-children, Don Schleicher, Columbus, and Phillip (Linda) Schleicher, Madison; 11 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret Andler, Columbus; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Catherine; one sister, Theresa St. John; three brothers, Art, Oscar and Harold; and one brother-in-law, Otto Andler.

Friends may call on Tuesday, Jan. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Tuschen-Newcomer Funeral Home, Sun Prairie, where a Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.

Lucille P. Setz
SUN PRAIRIE - Lucille Pearl Setz, 77, of Sun Prairie, died on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001. She had fought a courageous battle with a lingering illness.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 16, at 11 a.m., at Peace Ev. Lutheran Church, Sun Prairie. The Rev. Elton C. Stroh and Ardin D. Laper will officiate. Burial will be in Sun Prairie Memory Gardens.

Mrs. Setz was born on March 31, 1923, in the family farmhouse in Springvale, the daughter of Robert and Pearl (Labuy) Baker. She was married on June 6, 1945, to Monroe "Bud" Setz, in St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, Waterloo.

Mrs. Setz attended Healy Grade School. She was a 1941 graduate of Cambria High School and a 1943 graduate of Columbia County Normal School in Columbus, after attending for two years. On July 21, 1954, she graduated from the Wisconsin State College, Whitewater, with a bachelor of education degree.

Mrs. Setz began her teaching career at a rural school near Wisconsin Dells. She taught at the following rural schools: Burke Station, Medina, Shady Lawn and Ridge, Cottage Grove, and Nichols in Monona. While teaching at Nichols, she worked with and supervised many junior and senior student teachers from the UW-Madison. She was a member of the Monona Math Committee and the State Math Committee. After 42 years of teaching, she retired in 1985.

Mrs. Setz was a member of Madison Area Retired Educator's Association, Wisconsin Retired Education Association, Stoughton Area Retired Educator's Association, East Side Businessmen's Association, Sun Prairie Chapter AARP, Sun Prairie American Legion Auxiliary 333, Sun Prairie Historical Society, Twentieth Century Club, Madison Civics Club, Wisconsin Mathematics Council, Pi Lambda Theta and Peace Ev. Lutheran Church, Sun Prairie. She loved bingo, euchre and frequent Colonial Club day trips.

Survivors include her nephew, Kenneth (Susan) Baker, and their children, Kristin, Kyle and Kara, Beaver Dam; sister-in-law, Bernice Baker, Beaver Dam; nephew, Tim Noll Sr., and his son, Tim Noll Jr., Pardeeville; sister-in-law, Amanda McMahon, Stoughton, Gwendolyn Setz, Columbus, and Esther Granburg, Madison; longtime friend, Hazel Redman, Madison; relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Monroe "Bud", after a year's illness, in 1981; and one brother, Robert.

Friends may call on Monday, Jan. 15, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Tuschen-Newcomer Funeral Home, Sun Prairie.
