Ray Suttles
ALDIE, Va. - Raymond Herschel Suttles, 77, died on Sunday, April 1, 2001 at the home of Jim Berger and Jamie Walker, Aldie VA. Ray was there to present Palauan artifacts that he saved since his 1949-50 Navy assignment as part of the administration of the Pacific Trust Territory, based on Koror. On Friday, March 31, like a grandparent affectionately passing on family heritage, Ray presented to Hersey Kyota, Ambassador of the Republic of Palau, the symbol of Palauan authority that the high chiefs of Palau presented to the Navy in 1949. The 18-inch stool is carved from a single piece of mahogany and inlaid with tortoise shell. Free-standing, grass skirted women dance at the four corners of the earth to support the royal seat. Ray fascinated the ambassador and his staff with his stories, his knowledge of Palau and his grasp of the language.

Ray entered the Navy as a seaman in 1941 and left as a LT. (jg) . He was part of the first Naval ROTC class at University of Southern California, where he earned a B.S. in naval sciences. In 1954, he resigned his commission to work as an engineer for Douglas Aircraft, Convair Astronautics and General Dynamics in Los Angeles.

In 1962, Ray and his wife, Pat, started the West Coast division of Educators Progress Service, an educational publishing company. In 1969, Ray and Pat took over the parent company in Randolph, Wis. Ray retired in 1982, but used his direct mail knowledge to support several religious organizations, most recently the Franciscan Friars.

Ray was a member of Kiwanis International - Lt. Governor (1971/72), director of Fox Lake Gulf Club, asst. district commissioner of Boy Scouts of America San Diego Council, president of Randolph Centennial Corp., committee member (Industry-Education Cooperation) of American Personnel and Guidance Association,

Committee member (Postal Task Force) Association of Media Producers. Ray was a member of Mensa and Intertel, I.S.P.E. and the Triple Nine Society. Crossword puzzles, poetry and humor were his passions. Ray was a voracious reader. His book collection was limited only by the size of his apartment.

Ray is survived by three children and their families: Steve and his sons, Christopher and Jonathan of Las Vegas, Nev.; Kathy and Richard Nehmer and their three sons, Ryan, Shaun and Brandon, in Randolph, Wis., and Nancy and David Britton and their four children, Taylor, Erin, Austin and Hannah, in Lafayette, Ind. Ray is survived by two sisters and a brother. His humor and camaraderie will be missed by Chuck Jones and many other close friends in his hometown, St. Louis, MO.
