Elaine R. Paul
NEENAH - Elaine Riopelle Paul, 82, of Neenah, formerly of Tomah, died on Thursday, March 1, 2001 at the Alexandrite Manor, Neenah.

A memorial Mass was held Tuesday, March 6 at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Tomah. A reception was held at the church following the service.

Graveside services were held Monday, March 5 at 11 a.m., at St. Peter's Catholic cemetery, Beaver Dam.

Elaine Bernice Riopelle Paul was born on April 8, 1918 in Stanley, Wisconsin. She was the second child of Dr. Wilfred and Ann Marie Riopelle.

As a young child, her father moved his family to Beaver Dam and opened a medical practice there. Elaine and her siblings always considered Beaver Dam their home. Elaine's artistic gifts were recognized early in her life and those gifts guided her choices in her education and her career. She graduated from Beaver Dam High School in 1936 and began her college education at UW-Madison in the autumn of 1936. Elaine followed her heart and studied art at the University. After her father's untimely death during her senior year, her beloved mother advised her to add teaching to her art degree. Elaine's mother wanted her to be able to use her degree should she ever need to. Ann Marie Riopelle felt that a teaching certificate would be of value to the young and beautiful Elaine. Elaine's wonderful mother, Ann Marie, fell ill to leukemia and was unable to attend Elaine's graduation in 1940. Ann Marie died on July 9, 1940, leaving a young Elaine as family guardian. Elaine oversaw the education of her youngest brother Wilfred, and always took special pride in his accomplishments.

While at the University of Wisconsin, Elaine was very active on campus and in her sorority, Delta Zeta. Elaine was chosen the Queen of the Pan Hellenic Ball in her senior year. Prior to that time she had met a quiet, handsome football player named Herbert Paul. Herb accompanied Elaine to the Pan Hellenic Ball and on June 24, 1941 married Elaine and accompanied her through most of the rest of her life.

With the United States participation in World War II, young Herb, himself a University of Wisconsin graduate, now teaching in Columbus, and coaching football and basketball, answered the call to serve his county. He joined the Navy as 1st Lieutenant and sailed from New York Harbor in 1944. Elaine accompanied him to New York and lived in New York City during the war until Herb returned from his military duty. Elaine worked as an artist for Norcross Cards in Manhattan.

After the war, Elaine and Herb moved to Tomah. Herb had accepted a position at the Veteran's Hospital there. Their first daughter, Pamela, was born in 1946, Deborah, in 1949, Patricia, in 1955, and John, in 1957. Herb and Elaine lived in Tomah during the rest of their married lives. Elaine and Herb were actively involved in their community until their deaths. Elaine was instrumental with others in creating the first community theatre group and she served on the Tomah Library Board for many years. During her tenure on the library board, the Tomah Library was expanded and remodeled. Elaine was active in the life of the University of Wisconsin and served on the Tomah Alumni Board for many years. She and Herb loved attending Wisconsin football games and were especially delighted that three of their children and one grandson graduated from their alma mater. Elaine taught art for many years, both in Tomah and for the Elroy Kendall Wilton School District. Her mother's wise advice had proven valuable for Elaine as she and Herb worked hard to provide each of their children with a university education. Elaine was an active member in St. Mary's Catholic Church during her life in Tomah. Elaine was a devout Catholic and felt that her faith sustained her through difficult times.

Elaine is survived by her four children, Pamela (Paul) Shaheen, Bath, Mich., Deborah (Fred) Shaffer, Neenah, Patricia, Minneapolis, Minn., and John (Amy) Burlington, Vt.; three grandchildren, Benjamin and Andrew Shaffer and Megan Shaheen; three brothers, Rheo (Mary), Arthur (Mary Jane), Armand; and one sister, Beatrice (David) Youker, and one sister-in-law, Lois Riopelle.

Her husband, Herbert; one brother, Wilfred, and one sister-in-law, Isabelle, preceded Elaine in death.
The family requests that no flowers be given. Memorials may be made to the Wisconsin Parkinson Association, Sinai Samaritan Medical Center, 945 N. 12th Street, Suite 4602, Milwaukee, WI 53233 or St. Mary's Catholic Church, 303 W. Monroe St. Tomah, WI 54660 (please indicate that the donation is in the memory of Elaine Paul).
