Evelyn M. Mueller
MARKESAN - Evelyn M. Mueller, 84, formerly of Brandon, died on Saturday, June 23, 2001, at the Markesan Resident Home.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 27, at 1:30 p.m., at Emanuel Lutheran Church, Brandon. The Rev. Kevin Scheuller will officiate. Burial will be in Brandon cemetery.

Mrs. Mueller was born on Sept. 10, 1916, the daughter of Fred and Ora (Gray) Comstock. She was married on March 25, 1939, to Ornie Mueller in Brandon.

Mrs. Mueller was a graduate of the Brandon High School and a member of Emanuel Lutheran Church, Brandon. She worked for Dr. Hull in Brandon as a receptionist for many years.

Survivors include one son, William (Carolyn) Mueller, Brandon; one grandson, Dale (fiancee Shelly Brotherton) Mueller, Waupun; one granddaughter, Tammy Zweifel, Fond du Lac; three step-grandchildren, Ken (Ann) Hull, Jason (Jennifer) Hull, Coal Valley, Ill., and Ronda (Rob) Weber, Fond du Lac; one great-grandson, Brandon Mueller; four step-great-granddaughters, Laura, Elizabeth and Emily Hull, and Vanessa Weber; relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ornie, on Feb. 1, 1992, and one sister, Beatrice.

Friends may call on Wednesday, June 27, from noon until the time of service at the Emanuel Lutheran Church, Brandon.

The Kohls Community Funeral Home, Waupun, is serving the family.

Nellie Westra
BRADENTON, Fla. - Nellie Westra, 106, a longtime resident of Waupun, died on Sunday, June 24, 2001, in Bradenton, Fla.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, June 30, 2001, at 11 a.m., at the First Christian Reformed Church, Waupun. The Rev. Kenneth VanDeGriend will officiate. Burial will be in Alto cemetery.

Mrs. Westra was born on Dec. 4, 1894, in Rock Island, Ill., the daughter of Heerke and Metje Vander Schaaf, who were immigrants from the Netherlands. She was married on Aug. 26, 1915, to John D. Westra in Friesland.

Mrs. Westra spent her childhood on farms in the Brandon area with her parents and a brother, Charles. In 1925, she and her husband moved to Waupun, where he was an insurance agent, auctioneer and realtor. She was a charter member of her beloved First Christian Reformed Church in Waupun, was active in its Mary and Martha Society, and was a member of the Tri-County Gideon Society Auxiliary.

Survivors include one son, Donald (Mae) Westra, Bradenton, Fla.; two daughters, Maesel (Watson) Sterk, Kentwood, Mich., and Jean (Oliver) Oldham, Madison; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John; two daughters; one grandchild, and her brother, Charles.

Friends may call on Saturday, June 30, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the First Christian Reformed Church in Waupun.

The Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home, Waupun, is serving the family.

Matea Marolla
JUNEAU - Matea Marolla, 88, of Horicon, died on Monday, June 25, 2001, at Clearview Nursing Home, Juneau.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, June 28, at 11 a.m., at St. Malachy Catholic Church (now Sacred Heart Parish), Horicon. The Rev. M. Eugene Kinney will officiate. Burial will be in St. Malachy cemetery, Horicon.

Mrs. Marolla was born on July 6, 1912, in Pence, Iron County, the daughter of Julius and Madeline Cortichiato. She was married on June 23, 1934, to Ed Marolla Sr. in Montreal, Wis.

Mrs. Marolla was in the publishing business of the Horicon Reporter with her husband and family for over 30 years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Horicon, the Christian Mother's, the Horicon Senior Citizens and several area homemakers clubs.

Survivors include two sons, Ed (Bette) Marolla Jr., and Julius (Barbara) Marolla, both of Horicon; one daughter, Mary (David) Marsch, Horicon; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ed Marolla Sr., on July 11, 1992; three brothers, and three sisters.

Friends may call on Thursday, June 28, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at Sacred Heart Parish, Horicon.

Elsie Boss
Elsie Boss, 101, of Hillside Manor, Beaver Dam, died on Monday, June 25, 2001, at the manor.

The funeral will be held on Friday, June 29, at 11 a.m., at the Koepsell Funeral Home, Beaver Dam. The Rev. Carol Lange will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens, town of Trenton.

Mrs. Boss was born on Aug. 23, 1899, in Diemtigen, Switzerland, the daughter of August and Elsie (Klossner) Hahlen. She was married on Nov. 27, 1920, to Gottfried J. Boss in Zweisimmen, Switzerland.

Mrs. Boss and her husband came to Wisconsin in 1921. They worked on farms in the Monroe area for three years. Then, while her husband learned the cheese making business, she worked in a bakery in Monroe. They operated cheese factories near Mount Horeb for six years and Waupun for 16 years. After moving to Waupun, where her husband then worked for Canned Foods Co., she was happy with her garden work, especially the flowers. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Elsie and her husband enjoyed picking apples in their son-in-law's apple orchard. She was a member of St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, Juneau.

Survivors include one daughter, Gertrude (Marvin) Miller, Beaver Dam; four grandchildren, Steven (Pat) Miller, Stuart Miller, and Scott (Gloria) Miller, all of Beaver Dam, and Sherri (Jim) Wisnoski, Lakeville, Minn.; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gottfried, in 1992, and one brother, Cal Hahlen.

Friends may call on Friday, June 29, from 10 a.m. until the time of service, at the Koepsell Funeral Home, Beaver Dam.

Memorials may be made to St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, Juneau.

Harold J. Freson
JOHNSON CREEK - Harold J. Freson, 84, of 219 West St., Johnson Creek, died on Monday, June 25, 2001, at Fort Atkinson Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, June 28, at 11 a.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church, Johnson Creek. The Rev. Keith Johnson will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery, Johnson Creek.

Mr. Freson was born on Jan. 2, 1917, in the Johnson Creek area, the son of John and Clara (Ambrose) Freson. He was married on April 19, 1969, to Alice Schuenke at St. John's Lutheran Church, Johnson Creek.

Mr. Freson attended St. Mary's Magdalene Catholic Church, Johnson Creek. He was a retired machinist having worked for many years at Waukesha Motors. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Johnson Creek. He was an avid bingo player and enjoyed gardening. He was a devoted husband and father.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Freson, Jefferson; one daughter, Karen (Wayne) Keeser, Johnson Creek; two sons, Robert Rice, Johnson Creek, and Richard (Cheryl) Rice, Jefferson; two sisters, Lucille Sayles, Waukesha, and Margaret Schmidt, Reeseville; seven brothers, Donald Freson and James (Lorraine) Freson, both of Johnson Creek, Eugene (Irma) Freson and Dean (Shirley) Freson, both of Watertown, Raymond (Donna) Freson, Friendship, Robert (Lillian) Freson, Chicago, Ill., and Jerry (Millie) Freson, Jefferson; one sister-in-law, Donna Freson, Watertown; 12 grandchildren, 24 grandchildren; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and LeRoy, and two brothers-in-law, Mort Sayles and Lawrence Schmidt.

Friends may call on Wednesday, June 27, from 4 to 7 p.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church, Johnson Creek, and on Thursday, June 28, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church decorating fund, Rainbow Hospice, or the charity of one's choice.

Herbert F. Rueth
MILWAUKEE - Herbert F. Rueth, 84, died on Tuesday, June 26, 2001.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, June 30, at 10 a.m., at the Janssen-Molenda Family Funeral Home, 2925 W. Lincoln, Milwaukee. The Rev. Daniel Seehafe will officiate. Graveside services will be held at Arlington Military Park cemetery of Nordberg with full military honors.

Mr. Rueth was a retiree of Nordberg.

Survivors include one daughter, Lorna Mae (John) Ehlert, Horicon; two grandchildren, Marissa Ehlert and Kathryn (John) Risch; two great-grandchildren, Caitlin and Marcus Risch; one sister, Leona Kuhnke; two brothers-in-law; four-sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine (Luecht) Rueth.

Friends may call on Friday, June 29, from 4 to 8 p.m., and Saturday, June 30, from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the Janssen-Molenda Family Funeral Home, Milwaukee.

Harold Henshaw
Harold Henshaw, 77, of 146 Judson Drive Apt. E, Beaver Dam, died on Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at his home.

There will be no funeral service. Burial of the cremains will take place at a later date at Highland Memory Gardens, town of Trenton.

Mr. Henshaw was born on Aug. 20, 1923, the son of Roy and Emma (Ehlert) Henshaw.

Mr. Henshaw was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of the Beaver Dam American Legion Post No. 146.

Survivors include one son, David (Laura) Henshaw, Sheboygan; one daughter, Linda (Dan) Katte, South Carolina; two brothers, Junior Henshaw, Beaver Dam, and Rodney (Rea) Henshaw, Orange, Calif.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, and two brothers.

There will be no visitation.

Jeremiah I. Scherbarth
FALL RIVER - Jeremiah Isaiah Scherbarth, 6 months, of 600 N. Main St., Fall River, died on Monday, June 25, 2001, at Columbus Community Hospital.

Jeremiah was born on Jan. 26, 2001, in Menomonee Falls, the son of William and Kelly (Burkett) Scherbarth.

Survivors include his parents, William and Kelly Scherbarth, Fall River; one brother Devon Joseph Scherbarth, at home; one sister, Ebony Rose Scherbarth, at home; paternal grandparents, Ronald and Jeanine Scherbarth, Ooltewah, Tenn.; maternal grandmother, Dawn Burkett, Fall River; paternal great-grandfather, Reinhart Stierley, Port Richie, Fla.; an aunt, Ashley Burkett, Fall River; an uncle, Reinhart (Liz) Scherbarth, Milwaukee; relatives and friends.

The Jones-Jensen Funeral Home, Columbus, is serving the family.

Kenneth M. Rutherford
PAW PAW, Mich. - Kenneth Mills Rutherford, 75, of 39th St., Paw Paw, Mich., formerly of Decatur and Manistee, Mich., died on Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at Borgese Medical Center, Kalamazoo, Mich. He had been hospitalized since June 3, following a fall from his horse trailer at Centreville, Mich., where he had planned to race two-year-old colts.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, July 3, at 2 p.m. (E.S.T.), at the First Presbyterian Church of Decatur, Mich. The Rev. Brian Hall will officiate.

Mr. Rutherford was born on Feb. 25, 1926, in Columbus, the only child of Mills and Olga (Bartel) Rutherford. He was married on April 7, 1955, to Elizabeth, in Muscoda.

Mr. Rutherford was a 1944 graduate of Columbus High School. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in the officer training program. Following his discharge at the end of World War II, he enrolled at Carroll College, Waukesha, where he earned a bachelors degree in history and education. He taught and coached at Hartford High School for three years, leaving to accept a public relations position with Sportsman's Park in Chicago, Ill. Later he was race secretary at a small track in Kentucky and also at Batavia Downs, N.Y. He then drove a starting gate for races at Hollywood Park, Calif.

He taught one additional year in Wisconsin, at Fall River High School, then in 1955, he and his wife moved to Manistee, Mich., where he was head basketball coach for 14 years. During this time he maintained his involvement in harness racing, "catch driving" at the county fairs, as well as campaigning one or two of his own each summer. His three daughters helped him expand his stable until he took a year leave of absence from teaching in 1975. He never returned to the classroom.

Mr. Rutherford was a veteran harness horse trainer-driver for over 50 years. He was known industry-wide as an expert developer of fast trotting horses, most notably the Illinois-bred Soxy Byrd, Illini Empire, Cardinal Brandon, Cardinal Hick, Mr. Snagged, Jasper Wood and Echo Empire. Echo was the first Illinois-bred sub-two minute trotter.

He was a member of the Illinois-Michigan Harness Horse Association, the U.S. Trotting Association, the Masonic Order of Columbus, Wis., F & A M, the American Legion of Manistee for 55 years, and the First Presbyterian Church of Decatur.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Elizabeth "Liz" Rutherford, Paw Paw, Mich.; two daughters, Dr. Nancy Leigh Rutherford, Muskegan, Mich., and Catherine Rutherford, La Grange Park, Ill.; relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one daughter, Janet Rutherford-Collier, in 1985.

Friends may call on Monday, July 1, from 3 to 9 p.m. at the Newell Funeral Home, 83313 Highway M-51, Decatur, Mich.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Decatur, Mich., or to the Illinois Harness Horseman's Association, where a scholarship will be established in his name.

Francis J. Chatham
Francs J. "Frank" Chatham, 80, of 922 Prospect Road, Beaver Dam, formerly of 1018 Werner St., Watertown, died on Thursday, June 28, 2001, at the Beaver Dam Care Center.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, July 2, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Beaver Dam. The Rev. William Key will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery, Beaver Dam. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Beaver Dam American Legion Post No. 146.

Mr. Chatham was born on April 7, 1921, in Milwaukee, the son of Frank J. and Myrtle (Chatham) Kachlmeyer. He was married on Feb. 3, 1973, to Janice M. Draeger at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Farmington.

Mr. Chatham was a U. S. Postal worker. He was a member of the Beaver Dam John E. Miller American Legion Post No. 146, the Knights of Columbus, a charter member of the River City Barbershop Chorus and the Watertown Moose Lodge No. 830.

Survivors include hs wife, Janice Chatham, Beaver Dam; one daughter, Judith A. Weddle, Memphis, Tenn.; one son, Gary M. (Patricia) Chatham, Milwaukee; one sister, Valeria Schulz, California; one brother, William Huck; two grandchildren, Courtney Chatham and Daniel Weddle; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call on Sunday, July 1, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Koepsell Funeral Home, Beaver Dam, and on Sunday, July 2, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Beaver Dam.
