James F. Lehmann
James F. Lehmann, 57, of 1020 Lakecrest Lane, Beaver Dam, died on Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at UW-Hospital, Madison.

The funeral will be held on Monday, April 29, at 11 a.m., at St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam. The Rev. Mark Lindner will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery, Beaver Dam.

Mr. Lehmann was born on Jan. 22, 1945, in Madison, the son of Franz and Lorena (Possin) Lehmann. He was married on May 7, 1966, to Sharon Fude.

Mr. Lehmann was a graduate of Juneau High School. He was employed with Metalfab, Beaver Dam, for 25 years. He was a member of St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam. He was an avid sports and NASCAR fan.

Survivors include two daughters, Lori (Dave) Hackbarth, Beaver Dam, and Jodi (fiance Russell Firari) Ninmann, Juneau; five grandchildren, Keslie, Kegan, Emily, Adam, and Karson; one sister, Carol Streblow, Horicon; one brother, Paul Lehmann, Longmount, Colo.; one niece, Stacey Lehmann, Ventura, Calif.; relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one aunt, Viola Possin, and two faithful companions, "Midnight" and "Bear."

Friends may call on Sunday, April 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Koepsell Funeral Home, Beaver Dam, and on Monday, April 29, from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service at St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam.

He was a devoted and loving father and grandfather.

Alice Elitzer
FOND DU LAC - Alice Elitzer, 87, died on Feb. 12, 2002, at Encore Senior Living Villa, Fond du Lac, where she was residing.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 2, at 11 a.m. at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Waupun. Inurnment will be in North Burnett cemetery.

Mrs. Elitzer was born on Feb. 27, 1915, in Dodge County, the daughter of Gustav and Laura Gnerlich. She was married to John Elitzer in 1933.

Mrs. Elitzer and her husband farmed on Highway 151, four miles south of Waupun, for many years. In 1972, they sold the farm and moved to a home on Highway I near Waupun. She was a wonderful mother and worked very hard on the farm. She enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking and baked the best meals.

Survivors include two daughters, Jane (Tom) Ottery, and Carol (Roger) Bloohm, both of Fond du Lac; three grandsons, Ralph (Linda) Maastricht, Montana, Robert Maastricht, Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Randy Maastricht, Waupun; two granddaughters, Tina Smith, Waupun, and Suzanne (Peter) Flood, Fond du Lac; eight great-grandchildren, and three brothers, Lester (Marion) Gnerlich, Iron Ridge, Lawrence (Milly) Gnerlich, Mayville, and Clarence (Rose) Gnerlich, West Bend.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother and one sister.

Friends may call on Thursday, May 2, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Waupun.

Memorials in Mrs. Elitzer's name may be directed to the Fond du Lac Humane Society.

Curtis J. Vogel
Curtis "Tiny" J. Vogel, 40, of Beaver Dam, died on Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Beaver Dam Community Hospital.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 11 a.m., at First Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam. The Rev. David Bitler will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens, town of Trenton.

Mr. Vogel was born on Feb. 2, 1961, in Beaver Dam, the son of Alvin and Rosemarrie (Gosse) Vogel.

Mr. Vogel enjoyed playing bingo and going to casinos. He was an avid Packers, NASCAR, and Elvis fan. He enjoyed woodworking, painting, and spending time with his friends at Earthshine Candles. He was a member of First Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam.

Survivors include his parents, Al and Rosie Vogel, Beaver Dam; one brother, Brent (Amanda) Vogel, Oregon; two sisters, Laura (John) Minnig, and Heidi (Joel) Harbaugh, both of Beaver Dam; three nieces, Melissa, Heather and Kayley; five nephews, Derrick, Mitchell, Matthew, Jarrett and Grant; godparents, Bruce and Carol Seemann, Fond du Lac; his dog, Barney; aunts, uncles, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Friends may call on Tuesday, Feb. 5, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at First Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam.

Jerold P. Colker
Jerold P. Colker, 60, of Beaver Dam, formerly of Milwaukee, died on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002.

Beloved father of Jeff (Pauline), Steve , Greg and Mark (Lisa) Colker. Devoted brother of Thomas (Cheryl) Colker, Penelope (John) Binggely. Loving grandpa of Jeff Jr., Katie Marie, Lia, Brittany, Mitchell, Curtis, Justin, Travis, Joseph and Ashley. Further survived by his former wife and long time friend, Sally Colker; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Visitation will be at the Schmidt and Bartelt Funeral Home, 10121 W. North Ave., Wauwatosa, on Friday, Feb. 8, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a funeral service at 6 p.m.

Mr. Colker retired from the Milwaukee Police Department after 30 years of dedicated service.

Ambrose N. Wettstein
EDEN - Ambrose N. Wettstein, 90, of 310 Fond du Lac Ave., Eden, died on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at his home.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m., at Shepherd of the Hills Church, Eden. The Rev. Kevin Wester will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Eden.

Mr. Wettstein was born on Aug. 7, 1911, in the town of Forest, the son of Edward and Catherine (Fox) Wettstein. He was married on Sept. 22, 1937, to Elizabeth Kraus at St. Joseph's Church, Fond du Lac. He was later married on May 1, 1976, to Irene Kranig at St. Joseph's Church, Fond du Lac.

Mr. Wettstein was a farmer, milk hauler, and worked for Flood Oil Co., Eden, until his retirement. He was an active member of Shepherd of the Hills Parish, Eden, a past member of the Eden Village Board, the Eden Volunteer Fire Department, and the Eden Senior Citizens Club. He enjoyed cutting the lawn for many years at Firemen's park, playing cards with his friends and family, dancing, traveling, watching baseball, and visiting the sick. He greatly enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Wettstein, Eden; four daughters, Rosalie (John) Engels, Juneau, Louise (Jerry) Ottery, Betty (Jim) Welsh, both of Armstrong, and Carol (Jim) Mooney, Fond du Lac; four stepchildren, Jim (Rita) Kranig, Fond du Lac, Jean (Harvey) Scoot Honig, Madison, Bill (Kathy) Kranig, Oak Harbor, Wash., and John (Pat) Kranig, Fond du Lac; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; eight step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Julie Bertram and Loretta (Ralph) Halfman, both of Fond du Lac; his in-laws, Herman and Dorothy Kraus, Peter and Lorraine Kraus, Dorothy O. Kraus, all of Fond du Lac, and Ray and Victoria Schrab, Juneau; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth, on Aug. 17, 1974; three infant sons; one granddaughter; one step-grandson; his parents; two brothers, John and Henry; three sisters, Stella, Veronica and Catherine; six brothers-in-law, and three sisters-in-law.

Friends may call on Friday, Feb. 8, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Twohig Funeral Home, 205 Fond du Lac Ave., Fond du Lac, and on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at Shepherd of the Hills, Eden.

A memorial will be established.

Joseph W. Zimmerman
Joseph J. Zimmerman, 86, of Stone Terrace, Beaver Dam, died on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Hillside Manor.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2002, at 11 a.m., at the Koepsell Funeral Home, Beaver Dam. The Rev. Marvin Schilling will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery, Beaver Dam.

Mr. Zimmerman was born on Feb. 20, 1915, in Sidell, Ill., the son of Joseph H. and Angerena (Goodwin) Zimmerman. He was married on Feb. 20, 1946, to Caroline Cleary by Col. Oliver H. Kelly, Army chaplain, in Beaver Dam.

Mr. Zimmerman was a 1929 graduate of Sidell Grade School, and a 1933 graduate of Sidell Township High School. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1933, was assigned to Company 1657 at Lake Springfield, and later stationed at Giant City State Park near Makanda, Ill.

Having won a scholarship to the University of Illinois, he matriculated in 1934. He became involved in ROTC activities. He was a member of the Pershing Rifles drill team, Scabbard and Blade, and the Military Council. In his senior year he became a cadet lieutenant colonel and in command of the Coast Artillery cadets.

He was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve in 1938, and was chosen to serve in the U.S. Army under the Thompson Act. He was assigned to Battery E of the 61st Coast Artillery at Fort Sheridan, Ill., where he spent a year.

He was ordered to spend active duty again in 1940, and assigned to Battery F of the 61st Coast Artillery for six months. He returned to the University of Illinois to complete work on his bachelor's degree, but was assigned to the Recruit Reception Center at Camp Grant, Rockford, Ill.

He volunteered for duty in the Philippines. He arrived there on May 8, 1941, and was assigned to the 59th Coast Artillery at Fort Mills on Corregidor. However, because of his previous experience with an anti-aircraft regiment, he was reassigned to the 60th Coast Artillery and placed in charge of recruit training.

The regiment was expanded to three battalions when the battery commander was promoted to command a battalion, Joe became battery commander, and he was assigned to Battery K. Battery K was armed with 50mm anti-aircraft machine guns. They began to prepare wartime emplacements, and the battery moved out of the Middleside barracks to man the guns the day after Thanksgiving in 1941. He was promoted to captain. In spite of enemy fire, Battery K had no men wounded or killed.

General Wainwright surrendered Corregidor and the Philippines to the Japanese on May 6, 1942. Joe spent the next three and one-half years as a prisoner of war at Bilibid and Cabanatuan in the Philippines, and Yodagawa Bunsho in Osaka, Zentsuji, and Roku Roshi, Japan. When he was released he was promoted to major.

He was discharged from the army in 1947, and he returned to the University of Illinois where he earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in education, and a master's plus several hours in English. In 1970, he earned a master's degree in guidance and counseling from Illinois State University.

He taught in high schools in Marengo, Alexis, Paxton, Bradley and Ashland, Ill. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1955, and to colonel in 1964. In 1975, he retired from the U.S. Army Reserve. The Zimmermans moved to Beaver Dam in May 1990.

Mr. Zimmerman was raised a master mason in Sidell Lodge AF and AM 798 in 1945, and he was processed through the Scottish Rite in Danville. He had life memberships in Broadlands Lodge 791, the Grand Lodge of Illinois, and the Scottish Rite. In 1983, he became a National Sejourner and a member in perpetuity of Golden Gate 18, San Francisco. He attended the founding of Prisoner-of-War Chapter 523 at the Marine Club, San Francisco, and was named second vice president. He was initiated a Hero of '76. He was a member in perpetuity and past president of the Prisoner-of-War Chapter 523. He held life memberships in all the organizations of which he was a member; the Lincoln Land Chapter, the Retired Officers Association Western States Chapter, the American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, Springfield Area Chapter and State of Illinois American Ex-POW's, Sidell Township High School, University of Illinois, and Illinois State University Alumni Associations. He was a Zentsujian by reason of having been a prisoner-of-war at a camp in Zentsuji on the island of Shikoku, Japan, for two years. The Zentsujians are not organized. Their activities are the product of volunteers and donations.

Survivors include his wife, Carrie Zimmerman, Beaver Dam; one sister-in-law, Inez Cleary, Beaver Dam; one niece, Sharon Kay Zimmerman, Peoria, Ill.; two nephews, Michael G. Cleary, Redding, Calif., and Dan T. Cleary, Oconomowoc; relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, George Zimmerman, and one sister-in-law, Dorothy Zimmerman.

Friends may call on Wednesday, Feb. 13, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the Koepsell Funeral Home, Beaver Dam.

Janet R. Dogs
Janet R. Dogs, 48, of 206 Vincent Circle, Beaver Dam, died on Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at University Hospital, Madison, after a courageous battle with cancer.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 3:30 p.m., at the Koepsell Funeral Home, Beaver Dam. The Rev. Philip Heyer will officiate. Burial of the cremains will take place at a later date in Highland Memory Gardens, town of Trenton.

Mrs. Dogs was born on May 6, 1953, in Hustisford, the daughter of Clarence and Ruth (Friese) Dahnert. She was married on Sept. 23, 1972, to William J. Dogs, at Zion Lutheran Church, Horicon.

Mrs. Dogs was a 1971 graduate of Juneau High School and earned her nursing degree from MPTC in 1988. She worked at Clearview Nursing Home, Juneau, for 15 years as a CNA. She was a member of St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam. She enjoyed gardening, traveling, swimming and windcharms.

Survivors include her husband, William Dogs, Beaver Dam; four children, James (Jennifer) Dogs, Juneau, Jason (fiancee Robyn Loden) Dogs, Jamie Dogs, and Kimberly Dogs, all of Beaver Dam; her father, Clarence Dahnert, Juneau; one sister, Judy Campnell, Dalton; mother-in-law, Evelyn Dogs, Clearview, Juneau; two nephews, Cory Campnell, Fairchild, and Todd (Chrissy) Campnell, Dalton; close friend, Jeanie Roedl; two grandchildren, Austin and Kane, both of Beaver Dam; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ruth Dahnert, on Feb. 25, 1992; father-in-law, Peter Dogs, in November 1989, and her close friend, Linda Krause, January 2001.

Friends may call on Tuesday, Feb. 12, from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at the Koepsell Funeral Home, Beaver Dam.

Memorials may be made to the Breast Cancer Foundation.

MARKESAN - Helen Galler, 94, formerly of Waupun, died on Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at the Markesan Resident Home.

The funeral is pending with the Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home, Waupun.

Rachel Johnson
WAUPUN - Rachel Johnson, 91, of Waupun, died on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2002, at the Christian Home, Waupun.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m., at Pella Lutheran Church, Waupun. The Rev. Kenneth Loehrke will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens, town of Trenton.

Mrs. Johnson was born on July 9, 1910, in Waupun, the daughter of Milton and Jennie (Weenink) Klas. She was married on Oct. 22, 1930, to Edward O. Johnson in Waupun.

Mrs. Johnson and her husband resided in Waupun all their married life. She was a member of Pella Lutheran Church, Waupun.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Durant, Waupun, and Virginia (William) Hineline, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; one daughter-in-law, Donna Johnson, Waupun; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, in 1984; one son, Thomas E. Johnson, in 2000, and three sisters.

Friends may call on Thursday, Feb. 14, from 1 p.m. until the time of service at Pella Lutheran Church, Waupun.

Odette A. Riese
MANCHESTER - Odette A. Riese, 77, of Manchester, died on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at the Ripon Medical Center.

The funeral will be held on Friday, March 1, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Kingston. The Rev. Richard Lesniak will officiate. Burial will be in Proscarian cemetery, Manchester.

Mrs. Riese was born on Oct. 4, 1924, in France, the daughter of Celeste and Armandine Melun. She was married on Feb. 7, 1948, to LaVern Riese in France.

Mrs. Riese was retired from Del Monte as a quality inspector.

Survivors include her husband, LaVern Riese, Manchester; one daughter, Ginette (Peter) Thorson, Oconomowoc; three grandchildren, Samantha, Thomas and Nathaniel; two brothers, Bernard and Robert Melun, both of France; many nieces and nephews in France and Wisconsin; relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and three brothers, Edward, Raymond and Renee Melun.

Friends may call on Thursday, Feb. 28, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Wachholz Family Funeral Home, Markesan, and on Friday, March 1, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Kingston.
