Melba Lange
COLUMBUS - Melba Lange, 85, of Columbus, died on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at her home.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 11:30 a.m., at Olivet Congregational United Church of Christ, Columbus. The Rev. Margaret Shepherd will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside cemetery, Columbus.

Mrs. Lange was born on Nov. 29, 1916, in Beaver Dam, the daughter of George and Savilla (Singer) Peters. She was married on June 22, 1968, to Wilbert Lange in Columbus.

Mrs. Lange was a lifelong Columbus area resident. She was a member of Olivet Congregational United Church of Christ, Columbus, and had been a deaconess for two years.

Survivors include three daughters, Audrey (Robert) Biersach, Ruth Ann (Robert) Obermeyer, and Kathleen (Robert) Wedel, all of Columbus; one son, William (Janet) Pritchard, Janesville; three stepdaughters, Shirley (DeWayne) Banetzke, Helen (Howard) Petrich, both of Columbus, and Nancy Dykstra, Sun Prairie; one stepson, Donald Lange, Idaho; three sisters, Verna Geiger, Eileen (Robert) Hurkman, and Jean (Fred) Kraft, all of Columbus; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert, on July 18, 1997; four sisters, Viola Krause, Inez Howe, Lucille Berg, and Myrtle Waterworth, and one brother, Arnold Peters.

Friends may call on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at Olivet Congregational United Church of Christ, Columbus.

Memorials may be made to Olivet Congregational United Church of Christ, Columbus.

The Zeidler Funeral Home, Columbus, is serving the family.

Alice Balfe
WHITEWATER - Alice "Sally" Balfe, 94, of Whitewater, died on Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Fort Atkinson Memorial Health Services.

A memorial service was held at Fairhaven Residential Facility, Whitewater. The Rev. Herb Saunders officiated. Burial will be in Milton Lawn cemetery, Janesville.

Mrs. Balfe was born on Jan. 11, 1908, in Beloit, the daughter of F. Willard and Alice (Marks) Converse. She was married on July 7, 1928, to Paul J. Balfe in Whitewater.

Mrs. Balfe attended elementary school in Whitewater and graduated from high school in Milton. She attended Whitewater State Teachers College, Mayville Teachers College and the Janesville Business College. She taught in one-room school houses in both Racine and Milton, and did tutoring and teaching at all levels, from preschool to college. She also managed an art gallery. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Whitewater, the Constellation Chapter 176, the Eastern Star, and the Badger Shrine Club Auxiliary, Beaver Dam. She volunteered with the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, musical and art groups, church groups, and the Shriner's. She sang in various choirs for over 36 years, and received various awards in both the art field as well as musical circles.

Survivors include three children, Paul Balfe, New Hampshire, Jean Goodfriend, California, and Bruce Balfe, Beaver Dam; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Leonard Converse, Marshall; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, on June 7, 1984. and two brothers, Al and John Converse.

The Olsen Funeral Home, Whitewater, served the family.

James J. Sadowski
James J. Sadowski, 60, of W8193 N. Crystal Lake Road, Beaver Dam, died on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, at Beaver Dam Community Hospital.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m., at the Murray Community Funeral Home, Beaver Dam. Cremation will take place.

Mr. Sadowski was born on Nov. 24, 1941, in Beaver Dam, the son of Marcel and Angeline (Polzin) Sadowski. He was married on Nov. 14, 1995, to Betty A. Cundy in Reno, Nev.

Mr. Sadowski was retired from John Deere Horicon Works after 30 years of employment. He was a fan of NASCAR racing and in particular, Dale Earnhardt. He enjoyed woodworking, and lawn and gardening.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Cundy-Sadowski, Beaver Dam; five children, Lisa (Joe Nowak) Butterbrodt, Lori (Gene) Norenberg, Scott (Ann) Sadowski, all of Beaver Dam, Steve (Kris) Sadowski, Mayville, and Brian (Julie) Sadowski, Beaver Dam; two stepchildren, Londa (Gary) Hanefeld and Tony Nitschke, both of Beaver Dam; nine grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; in-laws, Gilbert and Elizabeth Cundy, Beaver Dam; three sisters, Bernice (Bob) Braemer, Marie (Joe) Wapneski, and Darlene (Manny) Zimmerman, all of Beaver Dam; two brothers, Phil (Audrey) Sadowski, and Charles (Sandy) Sadowski, both of Beaver Dam; two brothers-in-law, Gib (Ruth) Cundy Jr., Fond du Lac, and Lynn (Judy) Cundy, Mayville; relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Delores Schindel.

A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 9 a.m. until the time of service, at the Murray Community Funeral Home, Beaver Dam.

Robert A. Resheske
MAYVILLE - Robert A. Resheske, 81, of 331 N. Main St., Mayville, died on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Beaver Dam Community Hospital.

The funeral will be held on Monday, Jan. 28, at 10 a.m., from the Koepsell Funeral Home, Mayville, to St. Mary Catholic Church, Mayville, at 10:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian burial. The Rev. Charles Wester will officiate. Burial will be in the Shrine of Rest Mausoleum, Fond du Lac. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Mayville American Legion Post 69.

Mr. Resheske was born on Oct. 6, 1920, in Freemont, the son of William and Alvina (Bucholz) Hummel. He was adopted and raised by Stanley and Anna Resheske, Ripon. He was married on Oct. 13, 1948, to Helen Gremminger in Fond du Lac.

Mr. Resheske was a 1941 graduate of Ripon High School. He retired from Chrysler Marine, Hartford, in 1983. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Mayville, and the Mayville American Legion Post 69. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy as an electricians mate from 1942 to 1945. He was known for building and repairing bicycles and small appliances in the 1960s. He was an avid gardener and carpenter, and loved to hunt and fish. In later years he enjoyed going to the casino. He was also an avid Green Bay Packers fan.

Survivors include his children, Theresa (Al) Elm, Kenosha, Bonnie (Steven) Hargrave, Theresa, Robert R. (Patrice) Resheske, Iron Ridge, Mary (Thomas) Bechert, Horicon, David "Punky" (Kim) Resheske, and Darlene "Dolly" (Glenn) Wiese, both of Mayville; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen, in 2001; one infant son, Ralph, brothers and sisters.

Friends may call on Sunday, Jan. 27, from 4 to 7 p.m., with a parish rosary at 6:30 p.m., at the Koepsell Funeral Home, Mayville, and on Monday, Jan. 28, from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Samuel Gaastra
MARKESAN - Samuel "Sam" Gaastra, 74, of Markesan, died on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Berlin Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 11 a.m., at the First Reformed Church, Friesland. The Rev. Ronald VanderWerff will officiate.

Mr. Gaastra was born on April 22, 1927, in Friesland, the son of Louis and Jessie (Bosma) Gaastra. He was married on April 14, 1956, to Joan B. Kordes, in Milwaukee.

Mr. Gaastra attended the Friesland and Randolph school systems. As a young man he left home to work at Massey Harris, Racine, as a drill sharpener. On March 18, 1946, he enlisted in the armed services and was stationed in Rome as a radio operator and served until Feb. 17, 1949. After his return he was a gravel truck driver and shovel operator for many years. In 1964, he established Markesan Lime and Stone. In 1979, he incorporated his business into Sam Gaastra and Sons. He worked his trade until his retirement in spring of 1995. He was a member of the Markesan American Legion Post 210, and the First Reformed Church, Friesland.

He will be sadly missed and mourned by his wife, Joan Gaastra, Markesan; two sons, Loren Gaastra, Markesan, and Jeff Gaastra, Ripon; two daughters, Judy (Rick) Feldt, Sun Prairie, and Susan Gaastra, Chicago; three grandchildren, Nick, Mike and Hunter; three sisters, Jennie DeJager, Randolph, Clara Kloostra, Cambria, and Elsie Syens, Randolph; three sisters-in-law, Ruth Gaastra, Racine, Charlotte Gaastra, Friesland, and Jean Gaastra, Cambria; two brothers-in-law, Ralph (Suzanne) Kordes, Riverside, Calif., and Robert (Phylis) Kordes, Santa Barbara, Calif.; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Dorothy Westra and Rena Dykstra, and four brothers, William, Charles, Peter and Louis Gaastra.

Friends called on Friday, Jan. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Wachholz Family Funeral Home, Markesan, and may call on Saturday, Jan. 26, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the First Reformed Church, Firesland.

A memorial has been established to the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association in Sam's memory.

Jean Radke
Jean Radke, 72, of Beaver Dam, died on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Hillside Manor, Beaver Dam.

The funeral will be held on Monday, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m., at Trinity Church-United Methodist, Beaver Dam. The Rev. Greg Jewison will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery, Beaver Dam.

Mrs. Radke was born on March 21, 1929, in Milwaukee, the daughter of Gomer and Grace (Means) Jones. She was married on March 31, 1951, to Thomas C. Radke at First Presbyterian Church, Horicon.

Mrs. Radke graduated from Horicon High School and attended Carlton College,. She graduated from the former Wisconsin State College, Oshkosh. She taught kindergarten in South Milwaukee and Horicon, preschool with Margaret Esten in Beaver Dam, third grade and was a high school substitute teacher for many years for the Beaver Dam Unified School District.

Mrs. Radke was a member of the League of Women Voters, the Red Cross where she served as president when the tornado hit the Beaver Dam area. She served on the board and as president for many years of the Dodge County Historical Society, and was a member of the State Historical Society. She was very active at Trinity Church-United Methodist, Beaver Dam, where she taught Sunday school and directed the children's and adult's choirs for many years. She also enjoyed being an active member singing in the choir. She was active in the summertime at First Methodist Church, Rhinelander, in the Martha Circle and UMW.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas Radke, Beaver Dam; one daughter, Gretchen Jahns, Sun Prairie; one son, Chris Radke, Madison; one brother, Wynn (Joan) Jones, Rhinelander; one sister, Sue (Bruce) Gohl, Wausau; one grandson, Shane (Nikki) Ziegel, Randolph; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her stepmother.

Friends may call on Sunday, Jan. 27, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Koepsell Funeral Home, Beaver Dam, and on Monday, Jan. 28, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at Trinity Church-United Methodist, Beaver Dam.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Church-United Methodist, Beaver Dam, First Methodist Church, Rhinelander, or the National Kidney Foundation.

Gladys M. Yerges
FALL RIVER - Gladys M. Yerges, 76, of rural Fall River, died on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Columbus Community Hospital.

The funeral will be held on Monday, Jan. 28, at 10 a.m., at St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church, Fall River. The Rev. James Bolda will officiate. Burial will be in Medina cemetery, Marshall.

Mrs. Yerges was born on Jan. 3, 1926, in Lake Mills, the daughter of Ernest and Nellie (Knapton) Budig. She was married on July 15, 1944, to Elmer Zimmerman. She was later married on May 24, 1969, to Harold Yerges.

Mrs. Yerges was a member of St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church, Fall River, and was active in the Ladies Aid, serving in every office. She was a longtime member and resident of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post.

Survivors include her husband, Harold Yerges, Fall River; her children, Kathleen (Larry) Helgeland, Columbus, Larry (Denise) Zimmerman, Owen, Roy (Pat) Zimmerman, Columbus, Phil (Betty) Zimmerman, Stoughton, Linda (Kyle) Kling, Waterloo, Ronald (Delores) Yerges, Columbus, James (Karen) Yerges, Lomira, Charles Yerges, Madison, Nancy (Dave) Knaack, West Bend, Judy (Pat) Sullivan, Fall River, Debbie (Earl) Gunsolus, Fort Atkinson, David (Julie) Yerges, McFarland, and Kenneth (Paulette) Yerges, Daleyville; 27 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles (Carol) Budig, Watertown; two sisters, Irene Budig, Lake Mills, and Lucille Saeger, Ixonia; relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Elmer; one son, LaVern Zimmerman; one brother, Edward Budig, and one grandson, Allen Scott.

Friends may call on Sunday, Jan. 27, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Jones-Jensen Funeral Home, Columbus.

Memorials may be made to St. Stephen's Ladies Aid, Fall River, or the VFW Post 8090 Auxiliary.

Marwood Anderson
JEFFERSON - Marwood "Woody" Anderson, 68, of 235 Edison St., Waterloo, died on Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, after a long illness at her home.

The funeral will be held on Monday, Jan. 28, at 11 a.m., at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waterloo. The Rev. Robert Kosky will officiate.

Mrs. Anderson was born on June 20, 1933, in Evenson, Ill., the daughter of William and Helen (Zastrow) Krueger. She was married on Dec. 31, 1955, to Thomas Anderson in Beaver Dam.

Mrs. Anderson was a 1951 graduate of Beaver Dam High School and a graduate of Career Academy, Milwaukee, as a dental hygienist. She was a dental assistant in Dr. Anderson's office, Waterloo, for many years. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waterloo. She was an avid golfer and a member of the Columbus Country Club.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas Anderson, Waterloo; three children, Julie K. Anderson, Milwaukee, Thomas W. (Sara) Anderson, Iola, and Sue Johnson, Middleton; four grandchildren, Brooke and Brett Anderson, Kristin and Stacia Johnson; one sister-in-law, Beverly Kores, Beaver Dam; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Gene and Ray

Friends may call on Sunday, Jan. 27, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Pederson Funeral Home, Waterloo, and on Monday, Jan. 28, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waterloo.

Memorials may be made to the Waterloo Fire Department or the American Cancer Society.

George J. White
MILWAUKEE - George J. White, 79, of Milwaukee, died on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at Friendship Village, Milwaukee.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m., at the Kratz-Smedema Funeral Home, Fox Lake. Burial will be in Riverside Memorial Park, Fox Lake.

Mr. White was a graduate of Fox Lake High School, was a veteran of World War II, former co-owner of the Fox Lake Representative, served as executive director of the Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce, State Dental Society and Wisconsin Optometric Association.

George was the beloved husband of Bernice (nee Owens) White; loving father of Randy (Marilyn) White,, Sherwood, Vicki Harms, Hoffmann Estates, Ill., Pam (John Restivo) White, Chicago; proud grandfather of John D. (Rachel) Harms, and Mark Harms; great-grandfather of Jack and Anna Marie Harms; fond cousins, relatives and friends.

Friends may call on Saturday, from 1 p.m. until the time of service, at the Kratz-Smedema Funeral Home, Fox Lake.

Memorials may be made to Friendship Living Centers Memorial Fund, 7300 W. Dean Road, Milwaukee.

Cheryl L. Baumann
WATERTOWN - Cheryl Lee Baumann, 56, of Watertown, died on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at her home after a long battle with cancer, with her loving family by her side.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church, Watertown. The Rev. John Boehringer will officiate. Burial will be in the Lutheran cemetery.

Mrs. Baumann was born on Aug. 31, 1945, the daughter of Wilbur and Marilyn (Chipman) Eske. She was married on April 24, 1965, to Gerald Baumann at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lebanon.

Mrs. Baumann was baptized, confirmed and attended grade school at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lebanon. She was a 1963 graduate of Watertown High School and obtained two degrees from MATC, Madison, as a food preparation assistant and in restaurant and hotel cookery. She managed Home Plate Cafe, and was a cook at Home Plate Inn and Whistle 'N Joe's for a number of years.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald Baumann, Watertown; two daughters, Kim (Paul) Lang, Columbus, and Patricia Baumann, Waterloo; beloved companion, Beau; her parents, Wilbur and Marilyn Eske, Watertown; two brothers, Robert (Barb) Eske, and John (Melanie) Eske, both of Watertown; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Carl and Louise Eske, and Von and Marion Chipman, and one aunt, Helen Eske Stiles.

Friends may call on Tuesday, Jan. 29, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Pederson Funeral Home, Watertown, and on Wednesday, Jan. 30, from 1 p.m. until the time of service at St. John's Lutheran Church, Watertown.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Building Fund, the American Cancer Society, or the charity of one's choice.
