Marion Kessenich
HORICON - Marion Kessenich, 77, of Horicon, died on Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center, Madison.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10, at noon, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Horicon. The Rev. Eugene Kinney will officiate. A private family burial will take place in Holy Cross cemetery, Milwaukee.

Miss Kessenich was born on March 27, 1925, in Milwaukee, the daughter of Ray and Lonie (Abler) Kessenich.

Miss Kessenich was a graduate of Oshkosh High School and graduated from Cardinal Stritch College, Milwaukee. She was an English teacher from 1947 to 1990, at Horicon High School, and was the English Department head. She coached the drama, debate and forensics teams. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Parish (formerly St. Malachy Parish), serving faithfully in all aspects of the church, including parish council, serving in all officers positions. She was the proud recipient of the Archdiocese Vatican II Archbishops Award for service in the parish. She was also active with the archdiocese, serving on the Eastern Dodge County Adult Formation Implementation Committee, a member of the Friends of the Horicon Library, and an inter-generational volunteer for third graders at Van Brunt School.

Survivors include three brothers, Dick (Mary Ellen) Kessenich, Shelbyville, Mich., Tom (Delores) Kessenich, Phoenix, Ariz., and Brookfield, and Ray (Marilyn) Kessenich, Two Rivers; two sisters, Janet "Joan" Kessenich, and Lou Burrell, Prescott, Ariz.; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Jack (Pat) Kessenich.

Friends may call on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Horicon.

The Murray Community Funeral Home, Horicon, is serving the family.

Gordon C. Hawkos
TUCSON, Ariz. - Gordon C. Hawkos, 77, of Tucson, Ariz., died on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at his home.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10, at 11 a.m., at Bonnet Prairie cemetery, Rio. The Rev. Mark Buchan will officiate. Full military rites will be conducted by the Rio American Legion Post 208. A luncheon will follow at the Bonnet Prairie Lutheran Church.

Mr. Hawkos was born on Feb. 6, 1925, in Portage, the son of Clarence and Minnie Hawkos. He was married on March 27, 1948, to Jane Dates, Rochester, N.Y.

Mr. Hawkos grew up on a dairy farm, was a 1942 graduate of Rio High School, attended UW-Madison, and received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Maryland. He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943. He was a P51 fighter pilot with the 8th Air Force, 364th Fighter Group, 383rd Fighter Squadron, stationed at Honington RAF Base, England, during World War II, then subsequently assigned to the 9th Air Force Occupation Forces in Nuremberg, Germany, at the end of the war. It was in Germany that he met his future wife, an army nurse from Lyndonville, N.Y. He returned home after the war, helping on his father's farm, holding other jobs and continuing a long-distance relationship with his future wife. Shortly after they married , they moved to California where he attended Northrop Aeronautical Institute as an engineering student. His education was interrupted by the Korean War when he was recalled into the U.S. Air Force, extending his military service to a lifelong career. Over the years there were many overseas assignments including England, Africa, Vietnam, Korea, and Germany, as well as stateside assignments in Michigan, New Mexico, Illinois, Wisconsin, Maryland, Alabama, and Georgia. He retired in Texas in 1979, with the rank of chief warrant officer 4 (CW4). He served his country with pride as a military officer, and even more he served and provided for his family.

Survivors include his second wife, Joan Coble, Tucson, Ariz.; one daughter, Lisa Hawkos, Tempe, Ariz.; one son, John (Kathleen) Hawkos, Albuquerque, N.M.; relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his first wife, Jane, in 1979.

The Vangen Funeral Home, Rio, is serving the family.

Shirley M. Anderson
Shirley M. Anderson, 78, of 116 Lakecrest Drive, Apt. 8, Beaver Dam, died on Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at Beaver Dam Community Hospital.

The funeral will be held on Friday, Aug. 9, at 11 a.m., at St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam. The Rev. David Bode will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens, township of Trenton.

Mrs. Anderson was born on April 22, 1924, in Horicon, the daughter of Alfred E. and Alice E. (Muenchow) Miller. She was married on May 3, 1942, to Harvey C. Anderson in Beaver Dam.

Mrs. Anderson was employed at Bon Ton Bakery, Beaver Dam, for eight years, besides being a housewife, and worked at Beaver Cleaners until her retirement. She was a member of St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam, the Beaver Dam Lake Fisherman's Club, and the Y-Not Dance Club.

Survivors include three daughters, Joyce (Joe) Wiget, Lafeyette, La., Darlene "Butler" Morrissey, and Carmen (Dennis) Bruesch, both of Beaver Dam; one brother, Richard (Joanne) Miller, Beaver Dam; one sister-in-law, Joan Miller, Beaver Dam; five grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kim, Colleen, Brian, and Bill; five great-grandchildren, Rachelle, Rebecca, Hannah, Anna, and Kyle; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harvey Anderson, in 1993; one brother, Harley Miller; one sister, Beverly Schmidt; one son-in-law, David Morrissey, and one brother-in-law, Marvin Schmidt.

Friends may call on Thursday, Aug. 8, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Koepsell Funeral Home, Beaver Dam, and on Friday, Aug. 9, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam.

Memorials may be made to the charity or organization of one's choice.

Alma L. Dobberpuhl
MAYVILLE - Alma L. Dobberpuhl, 88, formerly of 20 N. Ewald St., Mayville, died on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, at the Mayville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, Aug. 8, at 1 p.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church (River Church), town of Theresa. The Rev. Edward Blonski will officiate. Burial will be in Hochheim cemetery, town of Theresa.

Mrs. Dobberpuhl was born on Feb. 9, 1914, in the town of Theresa, the daughter of Albert and Marie (Reklau) Giese. She was married on Feb. 4, 1940, to Christian A. Dobberpuhl in the town of Theresa.

Mrs. Dobberpuhl farmed with her husband in the town of Theresa. She was a member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, Mayville, a former member of St. John's Dorcas Society and Ladies Aid, a former member of St. John's Women's Choir, a member of the Mayville Senior Center and loved gardening.

Survivors include four children, Darlene (Gerald) Funk, Green Bay, Delmar (Jane) Dobberpuhl, Prescott, Ariz., David (Nancy) Dobberpuhl, Fairbanks, Alaska, and Debra (Franklin) Koch, Mayville; one sister, Clara Pankow, Juneau; three sisters-in-law, Florence Dobberpuhl, Mayville, Elfrieda Riechelt, West Allis, and Frieda Giese, Mayville; nine grandchildren; five grandchildren; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Christian Dobberpuhl, in 1992; six brothers, Alfred, Arnold, Reinhold, Ewald, Hilbert, and Ervin, and two sisters, Leona and Hertha.

Friends may call on Thursday, Aug. 8, from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service at Immanuel Lutheran Church (River Church), town of Theresa.

Eugene E. Casey
MILWUAKEE - Eugene E. Casey, 77, formerly of Reeseville, died on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, Aug. 9, at 11 a.m., at Holy Assumption Church, 7109 W. Orchard St., West Allis. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.

Mr. Casey was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy (nee Stengel); loving brother of Tom (Mozelle), Rosemary, Jack (Mary Catherine), Francis and Daniel (Audrey) Casey. He is further survived by relatives and good friends.

He was preceded in death by Margaret (John) O'Gara, Vincent and Raymond Casey.

Friends may call on Friday, Aug. 9, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at Holy Assumption Church, West Allis.

Memorials to the American Diabetes Association are appreciated.

Karl G. Hutter
THORP - Karl G. Hutter, 87, of Thorp, died on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Chippewa Falls.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Hedwig's Chapel, Thorp. The Rev. John Puerner will officiate. Burial with full military rites will be in Riverside cemetery, Withee.

Mr. Hutter was born on May 8, 1915, in Beaver Dam, the son of Albert and Adelheide (Ziegler) Hutter. He was married on July 14, 1941, to Lorraine Keller. He was later married on Oct. 17, 1970, to Beth (nee Pagel) Fisher in Thorp.

Mr. Hutter graduated from Beaver Dam High School and furthered his education at the University of Notre Dame. He entered the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the 9th Army. He attained the rank of captain before being discharged in 1945. He worked with Thorp Finance (ITT) for 28 years, retiring in 1975. He was a member of St. Bernard-Hedwig's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Thorp American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Beth Hutter, Thorp; one daughter, Karla (Joe) Stafford, Waunakee; one stepson, Bill (Donna) Fisher, Waterford; six stepdaughters, Nancy (Ron) Haas, Beloit, Carol (Allen) Bower, Rock Dam, Kathleen Fisher, Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Marybeth (Gene) Menden, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Susan (Rol) DeBauche, Thorp, and Laurie Jo (Dave) Tilly, Lino Lakes, Minn.; 19 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Hutter, Waunakee, and Barbara Hartzheim, Beaver Dam; one brother-in-law; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lorraine, in 1964; one sister, Marie Springborn, and one brother, Albert Hutter.

Friends may call on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Thorp Funeral Home, Thorp, and on Thursday, Aug. 8, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at St. Hedwig's Chapel, Thorp.

Elizabeth R. Schegetz
Elizabeth "Betty" R. Schegetz, 95, a resident of Hillside Manor, Beaver Dam, died peacefully on Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at the manor.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 11 a.m., at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Beaver Dam. The Rev. William Key will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peter's Catholic cemetery, Beaver Dam.

Mrs. Schegetz was born on March 27, 1907, in Apatin, Austria Hungary, the daughter of Andrew and Catherine (Haffenecker) Hussli. She was married on June 15, 1926, to Joseph Schegetz Jr. in Mayville.

Mrs. Schegetz was employed at the Weyenberg Shoe Factory, Beaver Dam. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Beaver Dam, of the Catholic Women's Society, and the Eagles Auxiliary. She enjoyed crocheting and flower gardening, and roses were her pride and passion.

Survivors include one son, Robert Schegetz, Beaver Dam; one sister-in-law, Anne Gartland, Beaver Dam; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; many godsons and goddaughters; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph A. Schegetz Jr.; one son, Joseph A. Schegetz; two daughters-in-law, Darlene and Marcia Schegetz; brothers; sisters, and twin great-granddaughters, Laura and Nicole.

Friends may call on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 9;30 a.m. until the time of service at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Beaver Dam.

Memorials may be made to St. Peter's Catholic Church, Beaver Dam, or UCPS.

Betty L. Eggert
Betty L. Eggert, 68, died peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at Beaver Dam Community Hospital.

A memorial service to celebrate Betty's life will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 6:30 p.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam. The Rev. Rae Ann Bloomquist will officiate. Inurnment of the cremains will take place at a later date in Highland Memory Gardens, town of Trenton.

Mrs. Eggert was born on May 11, 1934, in Hills, Minn., the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Halbersma) Vredeveld Sr. She was married on Aug. 30, 1954, to Morris L. Eggert.

Mrs. Eggert grew up in Randolph, and was a 1952 graduate of Randolph High School. After marriage, the couple resided in Beaver Dam until her death. They were inseparable over the years and enjoyed traveling the back roads of Wisconsin together. She loved life and fought hard to live despite a 24-year long battle with heart disease. She has been an inspiration to all who knew her, displaying courage, great strength and an optimistic attitude during her long struggle. She always held a strong religious belief and loved to play the organ in church, being a church organist for 45 years, beginning at the age of 15. She worked in administration for 15 years at the Chrysler Corp., Beaver Dam, until her retirement. Her role as wife and mother gave her the most joy in life. Two shining lights came into her life after she became grandmother to Eric and Michele Kraft, Madison. She loved spending time with them and never turned down a fun game of cards.

The family extends sincere thanks to the caregivers at Beaver Dam Community Hospital and UW-Hospital, Madison.

Survivors include her husband, Morris Eggert; two daughters, Joan (Robert) Kraft, Madison, and Pamela (Price) Widen, Verona; one son, Robert Eggert, Sheboygan; one brother, Gilbert (Janet) Vredeveld, Randolph; two grandchildren, Eric and Michele Kraft.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, and her mother-in-law, Florence Eggert.

Friends may greet the family on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 6 p.m. until the time of service at St. John's Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to Hillside Hospice, or St. John's Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam.

Gilbert Hammer
HUTCHINSON, Minn. - Gilbert "Gib" Hammer, 76, of Hutchinson, Minn., died on Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at his home.

A Mass of Christian burial was held on Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at 10 a.m., at St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Hutchinson, Minn. The Rev. Bill Sprigler officiated. Burial was in St. Anastasia Catholic cemetery, Hutchinson, Minn.

Mr. Hammer was born on Jan. 3, 1926, in Beaver Dam, the son of Jacob and Rose (Maier) Hammer. He was married on Oct. 3, 1945, to Newanna Helmbrecht in Fox Lake. He was later married on June 26, 1994, to Donna Lindemeier Phillips at an outdoor chapel overlooking the mountains in Cripple Creek, Colo.

Mr. Hammer was baptized as an infant and later confirmed in his faith as a youth. He attended and graduated from the Beaver Dam Public School system. He and his wife were blessed with three beautiful daughters, Marie, Jill, and Sara. They made their home in Beaver Dam until 1953, when they moved to Hutchinson, Minn. They were blessed with 46 years of marriage together, before his wife died in 1991. He was employed as a police officer while residing in Beaver Dam, and with Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing, Hutchinson, for 10 years. He was a Hutchinson Reserve Police Officer. He owned and operated Hammer's Inn and Milk House, Hutchinson, Minn., as well as a milk transit operation. Following his retirement, he drove school bus for the Linder Bus Co., Hutchinson, Minn. He and his second wife were blessed with eight years of marriage. He attended St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Hutchinson, Minn. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, watching television and socializing at the Hutch Cafe.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Hammer, Hutchinson, Minn.; three daughters, Marie (David) May, Hutchinson, Minn., Jill (Arlan) Lovald, Darwin, Minn., and Sara (Jack) Smutka, Englewood, Colo.; three stepchildren, Nick (Denice) Phillips, Perham, Minn., Barbara Phillips, and Karen (Kaith) Sperl, both of Elysian, Minn.; eight grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Teztloff, Beaver Dam, and Lorraine (Robert) Miller, Green Bay; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Rose Hammer; his first wife, Newanna Hammer, and one sister, Marie Hammer.

Friends may greet the family on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 6 p.m. until the time of service at St. John's Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam.

The Dobratz-Hantge Funeral Chapel, Hutchinson, Minn., is serving the family.

Ione D. Castor
Ione D. Castor, 66, of 105 Roller Ave., Beaver Dam, died on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at her home.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17, at noon, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Beaver Dam. Brian Highshaw will officiate. Cremation will take place.

Mrs. Castor was born on Oct. 4, 1935, in Vici, Okla., the daughter of Manley and Salma (Kothman) Turner. She was married on May 29, 1953, to Elmer R. Castor Woodward, Okla.

Mrs. Castor was a housewife and mother. She served as one of Jehovah's Witnesses and participated in door-to-door ministry for 43 years. She also taught God's word to others. Ione enjoyed gardening, crocheting, knitting, family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Elmer R. Castor, Beaver Dam; one son, Norman (Sherry) Castor, Ness City, Kan.; one daughter, Susan (John) Beilfuss, Beaver Dam; brothers and sisters, Gary (Carol) Turner, Vici, Okla., Linda (Jerry) Melson, West Salmen, Ohio, Vera (Ira) Epling, Vici, Okla., Rhonda (Stan) Reid, Mooreland, Okla., and Dennis Turner, Vici, Okla.; two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Manley and Salma Turner; two brothers, Duane and Paul Turner, and one sister, Colleen Easter.

Friends may call on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., at the Koepsell Funeral Home, Beaver Dam.
