The funeral will be held on Saturday, April 12, at 11 a.m., at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Waupun. Burial will follow in Graceland cemetery, Mayville.

Verna was born on July 13, 1911, in the town of LeRoy, to Edward Julius Lenz and Mary (Gathmann) Lenz. She was extremely close to her older brother, Gilbert E. Lenz. After graduating as salutatorian from Mayville High School, she began an exciting career as the legal secretary for attorney John Thiel, also of Mayville. In rain or shine, she would travel daily the 12 miles from her town of LeRoy home to work to tackle challenges in the legal profession. She would often recount "you don't know how many wills I've typed on the kitchen table for those who imprudently put off life's necessities."

Her life changed when Senator Panzer stopped by the office on business. Romance blossomed with Verna. She and Frank were married Jan. 1, 1942. During their 27 years of marriage they enjoyed an active life of politics and farming where they made their home on the bluffs of the Horicon Marsh. They raised two children, Mary and Frank Jr. Verna remained on the farm until recently, enjoying the nature of the Horicon Marsh she and Frank loved so much.

Verna delighted in her daughter, Mary, following her father's political interests to become the state's first female majority leader. She often encouraged all those around her to "get out and vote for Mary, my pride and joy." As she gained years, she gained activities. She was tireless in her support of civic and church responsibilities. She was jury commissioner for Dodge County, secretary of the cemetery, and a devoted member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Waupun. She was a steadfast Republican, but always had a soft spot for those who were progressives.

In later years, she wintered on Marco Island, Fla., where she entertained friends and watched the beautiful sunsets on the Gulf of Mexico. She also enjoyed bird-watching, quilting, entertaining, traveling, gardening, and her Wall Street Journal. Her favorite preoccupation was her lovely dog, Lola.

Verna is survived by her daughter, Senate Majority Leader Mary Panzer (Todd Hunter), West Bend; two granddaughters, Melissa Panzer, Milwaukee, and Melinda Panzer (Sandeep) Gaonker, Naperville, Ill.; one great-grandson, Shashir Gaonker; very dear friend and cousin, Marie Woller, Brownsville; one stepson, Carl Cotsakis, Mesa, Ariz.; five step-grandchildren, Audrey (Jim) Lindsey, Fond du Lac, Patty Thorp, DeForest, Sharon McNally, Mesa, Ariz., Dick (Jackie) Lurvey, Fairfield Glade, Tenn., and Lolly (Earl) Hartwig, Brownsville; 12 great-grandchildren; relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Sen. Frank E. Panzer; her parents, Edward and Mary Lenz; one brother, Gilbert Lenz, and two stepchildren, Gordon Panzer and Ruth Cotsakis.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 12, from 9 to 11 a.m., at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Waupun.
