James E. Fletcher
On a sunny Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 18, 2003, a warm, early-spring breeze blowing through his beloved pines, James E. Fletcher journeyed from our mortal world to join family and friends who have gone before him and spend his days in eternal peace. He died at home with his family at his side. No longer bound by pain or physical restraint, he is free again to fish and hike in the woods, drive his treasured vintage sports cars, play with his grandsons and fly, fly, fly.

James was born on April 6, 1924, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the son of Agnes Jane (nee Johnson) and Jules Carson Fletcher. He spent his childhood in Green Bay, graduated from Green Bay West High School in 1942 and immediately joined the Army Air Corps. He was based in England serving in the 313th Air Corps Troop Carrier Group as a combat crew engineer for C-47 transport planes carrying paratroopers and fuel. He had more than 1,000 hours of flight time in Europe. He was honorably discharged and was given the Awards of the Air medal for meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flights within the period January 1945 to 31 March 1945, flying vital missions supplying Allied forces advancing into Germany, and evacuating casualties by air during the infamous Battle of the Bulge.

He returned from the military to work as a brakeman and conductor on the Milwaukee Road where he stayed until the early 1950s.

On Oct. 15, 1949 he married Eugenia Ellen Smith at St. Anne's Episcopal Church in DePere. They leased a new Shell Oil Company service station at the corner of 14th and W. Mason in Green Bay until January of 1954 when they purchased Runnfeldt Oil Company and moved to Beaver Dam, Wis. Runnfeldt Oil became Fletcher Oil Company, Inc., a distributor of Shell, Union 76, Phillips 66 and Texaco products. In 1991, the business was sold and James retired to enjoy his hobbies of fishing, hunting, flying, sports cars and loving his friends and family.

He was a member of the Green Bay Kiwanis and joined Beaver Dam Rotary in 1955. He was given the first Beaver Dam Rotary Keeper of the Ring award and was a two-time recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow award, Rotary's highest honor.

He was a former board member of Old Hickory Country Club, Beaver Dam YMCA, and Bank One Beaver Dam; the former president of the Wisconsin Sports Car Club; a board member of the Milwaukee Region Sports Car Club of America; a member of The Sports Car Collectors Society of America; the Dodge County Flying Club and a founding shareholder of Elkhart Lake's Road America.

As a Boy Scout leader and Sunday school teacher he touched the lives and hearts of hundreds of area youth over nearly two decades.

James was a 50-year member of the Beaver Dam Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons; a member of the Valley of Madison Scottish Rite; a member of the Zor Shrine Temple; and a member of the American Legion John E. Miller Post 146.

He is survived by his wife Eugenia and their three children: Tim of Burnett, Wade (Mary) of Beaver Dam and Sarah (Peter) Botham of Barneveld; four grandsons, Robbie and Chase Fletcher of Juneau, James B. Fletcher of Beaver Dam and Mills Botham of Barneveld. He is further survived by three brothers, Donald (Jerilyn), of Greenleaf, Wis; Max (Marilyn) of Eureka, Calif.; and Richard (Marsha) of Salt Lake City, Utah; and a sister, Colleen (William) of Green Bay; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother Agnes Aschaker in 1982, his father, Jules Fletcher in 1984 and a brother, Dennis. James' enthusiasm for life, quick wit and easy smile were instantly contagious. Every vehicle he ever owned smelled of old leather and cigars and he favored a pipe full of tobacco and the company of friends over most any other of life's many pleasures.

He was a licensed race car driver and shared his enthusiasm for driving and spectating with his children, grandchildren and many special people over more than 50 years. He was also an instrument-rated, licensed private pilot flying for fun and business and donated several hours of flight time to former Governor Tommy Thompson in his first gubernatorial campaign.

A celebration of James' life will be held on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Church United Methodist, 308 Oneida St. in Beaver Dam. Family will receive relatives and friends at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. A reception at Old Hickory Country Club will follow the service.

Memorials may be made to any of the following organizations: Trinity Church United Methodist, Beaver Dam; The Parkinson's Foundation; Shriners Hospital for Children, Chicago; and Beaver Dam Community Hospital Hospice.

A special expression of gratitude is extended to the many wonderful caregivers who shared their warmth and their hearts with James and his family throughout the long days of his illness. In particular the family would like to thank Tracy Gerth, Sherry Drake and Penny Buchda for their selfless care and kindness.
