Fredrick J. Gahlman
JUNEAU - Fredrick J. Gahlman, 69, of Juneau, died peacefully on Friday, March 7, 2003, at his home surrounded by his loving family, who received caring support from the Beaver Dam Community Hospital’s Hospice Program.

Visitation is Monday, March 10, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Berndt-Ledesma Funeral Home, Juneau. Morning prayers will be on Tuesday, March 11, at 9:30 a.m., at the funeral home, then to Sacred Heart Church, Juneau, for a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception cemetery, Juneau.

Fred was born on March 14, 1933, in Juneau, the son of William T. and Marie (Yagodzinski) Gahlman. He was married to Dorothy Ann Neis on July 13, 1957. They were blessed with eight children, who live in the Juneau area and Green Bay.

Fred graduated from Juneau High School in 1951. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean Conflict. He then attended Kirksville State College in Missouri, and later attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout, where he met his wife. He served on the Dodge County Conservation Congress, the Dodgeland School Board, and as alderman for the Juneau City Council. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, formerly the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Juneau. He was a member of their Holy Name Society. He was a member of the American Legion Post 15 of Juneau. He was a past member of the Juneau Lion’s Club. In addition, he was a life long member of the Juneau Rod and Gun Club where he was a hunter safety instructor for 25 years. He was a private pilot. He worked for 27 years at Metalfab in Beaver Dam as a draftsman, estimator and buyer. He then worked at Aunt Nellies in Clyman as a purchasing agent, retiring in March 1996. During his retirement, he enjoyed golfing, gardening and turkey/deer/duck hunting with his sons and grandsons. He was an avid fan of the Wisconsin sports teams.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Dorothy Ann; six daughters, Terry (Rod) Anderson, Juneau, Sue (Neil) Whiting, Juneau, Pat (Jim) Kleinmann, Beaver Dam, Laurie (Steve) Keel, Juneau, Sandy (Kevin) Schultz, Juneau, and Julie (Randy) Keach, Waupun; two sons, Fred Jr. (Kari) Gahlman, Juneau, and Dan (Sue) Gahlman, Green Bay; 17 grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; one step-great-grandson; one sister, Elizabeth (Harold) Brieman, Juneau; one brother, William L. "Bud" (Carole) Gahlman, Juneau; one sister-in-law, Marge Gahlman, Juneau; two brothers-in-law, Joe Neis Jr., Juneau, and Gerald (Donna) Cribben, Lowell; one aunt, Mildred Gahlman; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant sister, Mary; one brother, Donald Gahlman; his mother and father-in-law, Joe Sr. and Dorothy H. Neis, and one sister-in-law, Nancy H. Cribben.

The Berndt-Ledesma Funeral Home, Juneau, is serving the family.

Viorene I. Newton
FALL RIVER - Viorene I. "Vi" Newton, 65, died on Friday, March 7 2003, as a result of an automobile accident in Oconto County.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 13, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Jerome Catholic Church, Columbus. The Rev. Bruce Hennington will officiate. Interment will be in St. Ambrose Catholic cemetery in Wabeno.

Viorene was born on July 20, 1937, in Wausau, the daughter of Clarence and Irma (Volkman) Towle Sr.

Viorene was a 1956 graduate of Wausau High School and attended Wood County Teacher’s College in Wisconsin Rapids. There she met James J. Newton and was married on August 19, 1961. Viorene was a graduate of UW-Oshkosh receiving her bachelor’s degree in education and master’s degree in library science. Viorene began her teaching career in Portage and spent the last 30 years at Columbus Middle School, retiring in 1998, after teaching for 35 years. Viorene was a resident of Fall River and previously lived in Pardeeville. She was a member of St Jerome Catholic Church in Columbus. Viorene was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Much of her time and energy was committed to her family, constantly providing her love and support. She dearly loved her grandchildren and spent as much time as possible with them. In her spare time, Viorene loved to dance, sing, and share company with her "Step Sisters," a wonderful group of friends who use their talents to entertain residents of nursing homes and at assisted living facilities. Viorene also loved spending time with her husband and family at their cottage in Wabeno. There she enjoyed working in her garden and taking long quiet walks surrounded by beautiful quiet forests. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Jim, Fall River; one son, John (Sue), Fall River; one daughter, Laura (Brent) Maron, Beaver Dam; three grandchildren, Samantha Newton, Colton and Maya Maron; three brothers, Milton (Bunny) Towle and Jerome (Sandy) Towle both of Wausau, and Clarence (Marie) Towle Jr., Minocqua; two sisters, Dorothy (Herb) Woodward, Wisconsin Rapids, and Melba Pahl, Wausau; a sister-in-law, Agnes Towle, Fort Atkinson; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Donald Towle.

Friends may call at the Jones-Jensen Funeral Home, Columbus, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12.

Kenneth C. Wesener

MAYVILLE - Kenneth C. Wesener, a lifelong resident of W3284 Highway TW, Mayville, died on Saturday, March 8, 2003, at his home following some difficulties of life.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, March 12, at 10 a.m., at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church, Mayville. The Rev. Edward Blonski will officiate. Burial will be in St. John cemetery, Mayville.

Ken was born on March 29, 1942, in the town of Williamstown, the son of the late Dorothy (Puls) Wesener and Carl E. Wesener, who was with Ken until the Lord took Ken home.

Ken was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church, Mayville. He farmed with his mom and dad on the family farm; he was a big part of the care of the dairy herd. In 1987, Ken and the family retired from dairy farming and cash cropped sweet corn, which he also helped with. He was a very special and kind person.

Survivors include his father, Carl, Mayville; his sister, Carla (Fredric) Kinkel, West Bend; his brother, Alton, Mayville, and his sister, Loris Geschke, Mayville; two aunts, Gertha Reabe, Lomira, and Edna Belling, Mayville; three nieces, Suzanne Kinkel, West Bend, Angela (Don) Neuburg, Slinger, and Laurel (Dave) Kelln, West Bend; two nephews, Matthew Geschke, Mayville, and Mason Geschke, Mayville; great nieces and nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his mother, aunts, uncles, and grandparents.

Friends may call on Tuesday, March 11, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Koepsell Funeral Home, Mayville, and on Wednesday, March 12, from 9 to 10 a.m., at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church, Mayville.

Thelma M. Westover
RANDOLPH - Thelma M. Westover, 81, of Randolph, died peacefully Tuesday, March 11, 2003, with her family by her side, at the Continental Manor, Randolph.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, March 15, at 11 a.m., at the Randolph United Methodist Church, 227 N. High St., Randolph. the Rev. Paul Fisher will officiate. Burial will be in Randolph cemetery.

Thelma was born on April 17, 1921, in the town of Westford, Dodge County, the daughter of Thomas and Prudence (Farnsworth) Graville. She was married to Donald M. Westover in 1941, in Gogebic County, Michigan.

Thelma was a lifelong area resident and attended Cambria High School. She was formerly employed with Rockwell International of Randolph for over 25 years. Thelma was a member of Randolph United Methodist Church. She was a great homemaker, made great pies, and enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening.

Survivors include three sons, Donald Westover (special friend Mary Zeidler), Reeseville, Warren Westover, Randolph, and David Westover (special friend Sue), Sun Prairie; two grandchildren, Boni Westover, and Dan (Shelby) Westover, both of Madison; two sisters, Viola Slinger, Cambria, and Susan Olson, California; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald M. Westover on June 5, 1989; her parents; three brothers, Ward, Victor and Tommy Graville, and one sister, Charlotte Olson.

Friends may call on Friday, March 14, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Randolph Community Funeral Home, and on Saturday, March 15, from 10 a.m. until the time of service, at the Randolph United Methodist Church, Randolph.

Norman DeYoung
FOX LAKE - Norman DeYoung, 90, of Fox Lake, died on Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at Continental Manor Nursing Home, Randolph, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, March 15, at 10 a.m., at the First Reformed Church, Randolph. The Rev. Calvin J. Vande Zande will officiate. Burial will follow in Highland Memory Gardens, town of Trenton.

Norman was born on Nov. 24, 1912, in Green Lake County, the son of Mike and Jennie (Acronius) DeYoung. He was married to Bessie Leystra on June 10, 1942, in Friesland.

Norman worked at Fox Lake Implement for many years where he was known for giving farmers that little extra service when they needed their machinery fixed yesterday. After his retirement in 1977, he enjoyed his woodworking and being with his grandchildren. He was a member of the First Reformed Church, Randolph, and was a dedicated and active member of his church.

He will be sadly missed and mourned by his wife, Bessie; three daughters, twin daughters, Donna DeYoung, LaMesa, Calif., and Doris DeYoung, Oostburg, and Jennifer (Jim) Krapf, Marshall; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Ben DeYoung, Randolph; one sister, Jessie Jansen, Fox Lake; one sister-in-law, Florence DeYoung, Randolph; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Melvin on April 5, 1981; one grandson, Cameron; one brother, Andrew, and one sister, Irene Stebbins.

Friends may call on Friday, March 14, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Kratz-Smedema Funeral Home, Fox Lake, and on Saturday, March 15, from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the First Reformed Church, Randolph.

The family has requested that memorials be given to the First Reformed Church.

Mabel D. Pieper
COLUMBUS - Mabel D. Pieper, 90, died on Thursday, March 13, 2003, at Marquardt Memorial Manor, Watertown.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Columbus United Methodist Church. The Rev. John Hobbins will officiate. Interment will be in Hillside cemetery, Columbus.

Mabel was born on Nov. 2, 1912, in Juneau, to Benjamin and Amanda (Thielke) Krueger. She was married to Gilbert Pieper on Nov. 2, 1947, in Columbus.

Mabel was a lifelong Columbus resident, a member of the Columbus United Methodist Church, and was an active member of the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include one son, Henry (Ruth) Lehmann, Watertown; one daughter, Charlotte Buchta, Watertown; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977; and one sister, Margaret Buelter.

Friends may call at the Columbus United Methodist Church from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18.

Memorials may be made to the Columbus United Methodist Church.

The Jones-Jensen Funeral Home, Columbus, is serving the family.

Lila L. Kant
MADISON - Lila Lorenda Kant, 78, passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2003, after a brief battle with cancer.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, March 17, at noon, at Bethel Lutheran Church, 312 Wisconsin Ave., Madison. The Rev. Curt Everson will officiate. Inurnment will be at Highland Memory Gardens at a later date.

Lila was born on Feb. 26, 1925, in Fond du Lac, the daughter of Harry and Lorinda (Lenk) Griesmer, and resided in Beaver Dam. She was married to Lester "John" Albert Kant on Aug. 2, 1947.

Lila graduated from Beaver Dam High School. She was employed at the city of Madison Planning and Development Department. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church. She enjoyed reading, traveling, knitting, crocheting and loved to dance. People who met Lila said she had spirit, sparkle and wit. She did have a way with words. Her knowledge, wisdom and "saying it like it was" will be missed by her family and friends. A neighbor once said, "after all there is only one Lila." She deeply cherished her grandchildren and great-grandson.

Survivors included three children, Lee Syverud, Madison, Debra (Rex) Olson, Monona, and Greg (Julie) Kant, Verona; her grandchildren, Troy (Melissa) and Deanne Syverud, Sarah and Joshua Olson, and McKinley, Shannon and Justin Kant; one great-grandson, Chase Syverud; two sisters, Charlotte Peterson, Madison, and Fern (Lawrence) Bloohm, Brownsville; one brother, Harry Griesman Jr., New Berlin; one brother-in-law, Loren Beal, Columbus, and dear friend, Alice.

Friends may call on Monday, March 17, from 10:30 until the time of services at Bethel Lutheran Church, Madison.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lila's name to he UW Cancer Research Department.

The Gunderson Funeral Home, Madison, is serving the family. The family thanks St. Mary's Hospital (Pediatrics), HospiceCare Center and Harmony Assisted Living for the last two months of tender care.

"We will miss you mom, grandma, great-grandma, and your cooking too." With tearful eyes we watched her suffer and saw her fade away. Although we loved her dearly, we could not make her stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands to rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best.

Elizabeth U'Ren
Our Little Angel

Elizabeth "Lizzy" U'Ren, age 4 months, died unexpectedly on Sunday, March 9, 2003, as the results of an automobile accident, at Children's Hospital, Wauwatosa.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, March 17, at 2 p.m., at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 118 W. Main St., Waupun. The Rev. Michael Moran will officiate. Interment will be in Forest Mound cemetery, Waupun. The visitation will be held on Monday, March 17, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at the Kohls Community Funeral Home, Waupun.

Survivors include her parents; Chad and Holly U'Ren, Waupun; one brother, Collin U'Ren, at home; paternal grandparents, Michael (Nancy) U'Ren, Oregon, Wis.; maternal grandparents, Marty Anderson, Green Bay, and Annette (Rod) Aide, Monfort; great-grandparents, Homer U'Ren, Mineral Point, and Arnold (Gertrude) Doty, Horicon; aunts, Katie, Monfort, and Samantha, Wausau; uncles, Brian, Oregon, Wis., Marty, Manitowoc, and Joey, Montfort.

Lizzy joins great-grandma Elizabeth "Betty" U'Ren, and Susan "Susie" Grintjes and Corry Coogan, in heaven.

Mommy and Daddy miss you and love you very much. Tell Jesus to make sure he washes your neck when you get formula stuck in there. We can't wait to see you again, baby.

"Chubby Cheeks," we miss you and will love you always! Til' we see you again, love grandpa and grandma.

Albert O. Daehn
Albert O. Daehn, 82, of Hillside Manor, Beaver Dam, died on Friday, March 14, 2003, at Hillside Manor, Beaver Dam.

The funeral will be held on Monday, March 17, at 1 p.m., at St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam. The Rev. David Bode will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill cemetery, Hartford.

Albert was born on June 13, 1920, in Hartford, the son of Reinhardt and Anna (Rux) Daehn.

Albert farmed for many years and later was self-employed in small engine repair. He was a member of St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam. He volunteered at the Food Pantry in Beaver Dam.

Survivors include one sister-in-law, Margaret Loeck, Beaver Dam; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his aunt and uncle who raised him, William and Ida Loeck; five brothers, Alvin, John, and Frank Daehn, and William and Clarence Loeck; and two sisters, Frieda Daehn and Alice Castleberry.

Friends may call on Monday, March 17, from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m., at St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church, Beaver Dam.

Memorials may be made to St. Stephen's Ev. Lutheran Church or to the Food Pantry of Dodge County.

The Koepsell Funeral Home, Beaver Dam, is serving the family.

Darlene G. Slayton
GAYS MILLS - Darlene G. (Wallace) Slayton , 58, of Gays Mills, formerly of West Bend, died on Thursday, March 13, 2003, at her home.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 18, at 7 p.m., at the Schmidt Funeral Home, West Bend. The Rev. Patrick Wendt will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until the time of service. There will be a visitation from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., on Saturday, March 22, at the Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home, Hayward, followed by burial in Earl cemetery, Earl.

Darlene was born on June 4, 1944 in Hayward, to the late George and Edna (Sweeny) Wallace. She was married to Wayne Slayton on Oct. 20, 1962, in Hayward.

Darlene was employed at the former West Bend Co. for 30 years and also helped her husband operate Wayne’s Sport Shop in West Bend for four years. She was a member of the former 25 year Club at the West Bend Co. and also a member of St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Church.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne, Gays Mills; two sons, Jeffrey (Jackie), Beaver Dam, and James (Tami), West Bend; seven grandchildren, Sierra David, Natasha, Kenneth, Brooke, Blake, Emily, and Austin Slayton; two sisters, Dorothy (Mel Harbut) Groat, Hayward, and Isadora (Marvin) Brandt, Hazelhurst; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one son, Donald; one sister, Hazel Wallace, and one brother, William.

Memorials would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.

The Schmidt Funeral Home, West Bend, is serving the family.
