Lorraine Smit
WAUPUN - Lorraine Smit, 79, of Waupun, died on Wednesday, May 7, 2003, at the Waupun Memorial Hospital, with her family by her side.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, May 10, at 10 a.m., at Trinity Reformed Church, Waupun. The Rev. Thomas Daubenspeck will officiate. Burial will follow at Forest Mound cemetery, Waupun.

Lorraine was born on Dec. 30, 1923, in Oshkosh, the daughter of George and Lena (Rabehl) Luther. She married Delmar Smit on Sept. 21, 1944, in Waupun.

Lorraine and her husband farmed in the Waupun area for many years and then moved to the city of Waupun in 1972. She was a charter member of Trinity Reformed Church, Waupun, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of its guild. She was very community minded and was involved at Waupun Memorial Hospital in its Supportive Care Program, and was currently an information desk volunteer at the hospital. She was a faithful member of Achievers. She enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren as they participated in school and sports activities.

Survivors include her husband, Delmar, Waupun; one son, Dave (Paulette) Smit, Waupun; one daughter, Barbara (Harland) Harmsen, Waupun; four grandchildren, Derrick (Candice) Smit, Friesland, Jeffrey Smit, Friesland, Scott (Jodie) Harmsen, Shanghai, China, and Jean (Greg) Henschel, Waukesha; three step-grandchildren, Christopher (Penny) Selje, Hillpoint, Rebecca (Scott) Kamphuis, Waupun, and Angela (Joshua) Herringa, Waupun; three great-great-grandchildren; six step-great grandchildren; one brother, Arnold (Donna) Luther, Lomira; one sister, Lois Burleton, Ripon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother and one sister.

Friends may call on Friday, May 9, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Werner-Harmsen Funeral Home, Waupun, and on Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at Trinity Reformed Church, Waupun.

Robert G. McFarlane
BEAVER DAM - Robert G. McFarlane, 80, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison, surrounded by his loving family.

Friends may call on Saturday, May 10, at the United Methodist Church, Columbus, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. The funeral will be held on Saturday, May 10, at 11 a.m., at the United Methodist Church, Columbus. Burial will be at the Hillside cemetery, Columbus, with graveside military rites.

Bob was born in Cincinnatus, N.Y., on July 11, 1922.

Bob was scouted by the New York Giants at the age of 15, and after graduation was signed by the Giants, and played minor league baseball. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. for 3 1/2 years serving in the South Pacific, and was discharged as a staff sergeant. He served with the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves in 1951 during the Korean War. Through the years he continued to play baseball with many teams, among them were the Truckers baseball team in Clintonville, Wis. His life time work was as a lab technicain, quality control for the dairy food industry. He worked in many places, among them the former Borden Co., Columbus, ending with Dean Foods in Chemung, Ill. In 1986, he and his wife, Ruth, retired to Ruth's hometown of Columbus. This past year they lived in Beaver Dam.

Bob was a life long member of the Columbus VFW Post 8090, as well as a member of the Columbus Legion Post 62. He was an avid bowler through the years, as well as a collector of many things. He made delicate models and made a replica of the nuclear submarine that his grandson served on. He was a member of the United Church of Christ Church.

He will be remembered as a devoted, loving, caring husband, father and grandfather

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Ruth; two daughters, Cathy (George) Durfee, Beaver Dam, and Susan (John) Lanphier, Beaver Dam; two sons, Gary (Deb) McFarlane, Beaver Dam, and Richard (Lucia) McFarlane, Roscoe, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Elaine Laursen, Missouri, Dolores Olver, California, Joyce (James) Buckley, Washington, and Carol (Don) Franz, Florida, and one aunt, Elizabeth McFarlane, Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one nephew.

The Zeidler Funeral Home, Columbus, is serving the family.

Mitchell B. Spence
COLUMBUS - Mitchell Bryan Spence, 38, of Columbus, died on Friday, May 2, 2003, at home after a difficult and courageous battle with bladder cancer.

Mitchell was born on Oct. 11, 1964, in Chicago, Ill.

Mitchell graduated in 1988 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, with a degree in economics. During high school in Rochester, Minn., he met and became friends with Tracey Evans, a very special woman. They were married on Oct. 31, 1992, in St. Paul., Minn.

Prior to being disabled by cancer, he distinguished himself as a pharmaceutical representative for Sanofi-Synthelobo Inc. He was named to the President's Club for sales excellence numerous times in his career. He was a person who loved his family, friends and life. He was a kind-hearted person who always had a positive attitude and a smile on his face. He was a person that you could depend on. He enjoyed outdoor sports, cooking, camping and competing in triathlons. He also enjoyed spending time at the family home in Door County.

Survivors include his wife, Tracey; two children, Sydney and Grant; his parents, Gavin and Phylis Spence, Fond du Lac, and his maternal grandmother, Libbie Schuh, Fond du Lac.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Alfred Schuh.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Hillside Hospice, 709 S. University Ave., Beaver Dam, WI 53916.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Kestrel Ridge Golf Club, 900 Avalon Road, Columbus. Food and refreshments will be served.

Verena I. Quandt
HUSTISFORD - Verena I. Quandt, 85, of Hustisford, died on Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at the Mayville Nursing Home.

The funeral will be held on Saturday, May 10, at 10 a.m., at the Bethany Ev. Lutheran Church, Hustisford. The Revs. Timothy Bauer and David Pries will officiate. Burial will be in the Hustisford cemetery.

Verena was born on April 21, 1918, in Oak Grove, the daughter of Bernhard and Olga (Laabs) Kirchoff. She was married to Frederick W. Quandt on Nov. 7, 1948, at Bethany Ev. Lutheran Church, Hustisford.

Verena lived in Hustisford almost all her life and was a long-time member of Bethany Ev. Lutheran Church. She used to volunteer at the Dodge County meal site for many years. She was active in the Hustisford American Legion Auxiliary, worked at Bethany School as a janitor for many years and at Badger Mills in Hustisford during her working years.

Survivors include two children, Barbara (James) Wittnebel, Hustisford, and Frederick (Margaret) Quandt, Beaver Dam; four grandchildren, Lisa Wolter, Waupun, Ryan (fiancee Gina Sette) Wittnebel, Hustisford, Luke Wittnebel, Hustisford, and Jodi Wittnebel, Hustisford; one brother, Orville (Esther) Kirchoff, Hartford; four step-grandchildren, Roger (Stacy) Benter, Beaver Dam, Jason (Tabitha) Benter, Beaver Dam, Elissa and Katrisa Benter, Randolph; 11 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Frederick in 1985.

Friends may call on Friday, May 9, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Bethany Ev. Lutheran Church, Hustisford, and on Saturday, May 10, from 9 to 10 a.m., at the church.

The Berndt-Ledesma Funeral Home, Hustisford, is serving the family.

Thelma V. Olson
COLUMBUS - Thelma V. Olson, 94, formerly of Pardeeville and Poynette, died on Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at the Columbus Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 9, at the Jones-Jensen Funeral Home, Columbus. The Rev. Robert V. Moberg will officiate. Interment will be in the Pardeeville cemetery, Pardeeville.

Thelma was born on Oct. 2, 1908, to Bert and Martha Bacon. She was married to Oscar Olson on Dec. 17, 1938, in Rio.

Thelma was a Columbus resident since 1967 and was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church, Columbus. She loved all kinds animals. She enjoyed quilting and sewing.

Survivors include one niece, Dorothy Johnson, New York; one nephew, Lawrence (Kathryn) Olson, Columbus; many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Oscar on May 8, 1974, and two sisters.

Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at the Jones-Jensen Funeral Home, Columbus, on Friday, May 9.

Grant W. Sloniker
WOODRUFF - Grant W. Sloniker, 82, was called to eternal rest on May 2, 2003, at the Howard Young Medical Center, Woodruff.

Private family services were held on Wednesday, May 7, at the Bolger Funeral Home, Woodruff. Burial was in the Wisconsin Memorial Park, Brookfield.

Grant was born on Feb. 26, 1921, in Greenwood, the son of Earl and Olga (Bragstad) Sloniker.

Grant was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the South Pacific. He spent his life living and working in the greater Milwaukee area.

Survivors include one son, Dennis Sloniker, Minocqua; two sisters, Maxine Benson, Baton Rouge, La., and Corrine (Ron) Tesch, Houghton, Mich.; two granddaughters, Danielle (Barry) Richardson, Eau Claire, and Petrina Sloniker, Minocqua; two great-grandchildren, Brandon and Savannah Sloniker, Minocqua; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Justin and his wife, Beatrice in 1995.

The Bolger Funeral Home of Minocqua, Woodruff and Eagle River, is serving the family.

Carl R. Bath
MAYVILLE - Carl "Chuck" R. Bath, 48, of 624 Horicon St., Mayville, died on Sunday, May 4, 2003, as the result of an auto accident.

A visitation and celebration of Chuck's life will be held on Wednesday, May 7, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Koepsell Funeral Home, Mayville. Cremation has taken place.

Carl was born on Feb. 13, 1955, in Beaver Dam, the son of Richard and Theresa (Illik) Bath.

Carl was a 1973 graduate of Mayville High School. He was employed with CP Rail in Milwaukee at the time of his passing. He started with the Milwaukee Railroad in 1979. He enjoyed spending time with his friends.

Survivors include his significant other, Debbie Willis, Mayville; his parents, Richard and Theresa Bath, Tucson, Ariz.; one son, Chad Fischer, Mayville; three brothers, Mike (Pam) Bath, Madison, Robert Bath, Pensacola, Fla. and his children, Tammy (Dustin) Westphal and Angie Bath, and David (Nettie) Bath and their daughter, Kaytie Bath, Mayville; his other family, Joshua, Emma and Evan Willis, Mayville, Melissa Willis, San Diego, Calif., Cindy, Eric, Natasha and Payten Henkel, Mayville; many close friends, Larry (Connie) Budahn, Ray (Joanne) Collien, Linda (Chunky) Weinberger, Dave and Betty Wild; many others too numerous to mention but you all know who you are; other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Lucia L. Link
Lucia L. Link, 73, of Beaver Dam and formerly of Columbus, passed quietly on Thursday, May 8, 2003, at home with her family.

The funeral will be held on Monday, May 12, 2003, at 11 a.m., at Faith Lutheran Church, Columbus. The Rev. Robert V. Moberg will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside cemetery, Columbus.

Lucia was born on March 9, 1930, in the town of Plainfield, Plainfield, Ill., the daughter of Gabor and Maude (Schaefer) Ambrus.

Lucia graduated from Minooka High School, Minooka, Ill. She was united in marriage with Lawrence F. Link on Dec. 27, 1952, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lockport, Ill. They had recently celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Lucia has always been very active in her church and her church circle 'Scroll.' Friends will remember "Lucy" as the Wal-Mart greeter at the Beaver Dam store.

Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Link, town of Trenton; two children, Don Link, Beaver Dam, and Lori (Peter) Gasser, Columbus; one stepson, Larry (Susan) Link, Frankfort, Ill.; two sisters, Clara (Roland) Hix, North Aurora, Ill., and Marie Hall, Cottonwood, Ariz.; one brother, Ezekiel Ambruse, Minneapolis, Minn.; two granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Mary Arbeiter, Anna Murray and Helen Ambrus, and two brothers, Gabor Ambrus Jr. and Steve Ambrus.

Friends may call on Sunday, May 11, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Faith Lutheran Church, Columbus, and on Monday, May 12, from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.

Joseph J. Horvath
RANDOLPH - Joseph J. Horvath, 86, of Randolph, died on Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at his home.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 10, at 2 p.m., at the Bethany Presbyterian Church, 275 N. High St., Randolph. The Rev. Linda Heisler will officiate. Inurnment will be in Hannibal cemetery, Hannibal. Family and friends will be received at the church on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the time of service.

Joe was born on Jan. 3, 1917 in Indiana Harbor, Ind., the son of Joseph and Magdalina (Boszman) Horvath. He was married to Rose Imhof on Aug. 12, 1952, in Medford.

Joe moved to Hannibal in 1929 with his family. He served his country with the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II serving in the European and African theaters. He was also a lifetime member of the Randolph VFW Post 9510 and the DAV. He enjoyed reading, fishing, gardening and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Rose; five children, Caren (Neal) Prochnow, River Falls, Joseph (Becky) Horvath, Pine River, Sandra (Tony) O'Malley, Oakfield, Lesa (Greg) Voss, Albertville, Minn., and Thomas (Debra) Horvath, Hartford; 15 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two brothers, John (Diane) Horvath, Andrew (Vera) Horvath; and three sisters, Margaret and Ann Horvath, and Mary (Ray) Hoehn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Julie, Helen and Magdaline, and two brothers, Frank and Steve.

A memorial fund is being established for the VFW Flag Fund.

The Randolph Community Funeral Home, Randolph, is serving the family.

LeRoy H. Margelofsky
FOND DU LAC - LeRoy H. Margelofsky, 82, of 220 South Lake Circle, Fond du Lac, died on Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at his home.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, May 9, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Lomira. The Rev. Kevin Kowalski will officiate. Entombment will follow in Ledgeview Memorial Park.

LeRoy was born on Oct. 20, 1920, in Ashippun, the son of the late Arthur and Lillie (Groth) Margelofsky. He was married to Adeline Wondra on Aug. 25, 1945, at St. Andrew's Church, LeRoy.

LeRoy farmed and drove milk and cattle truck and then worked at Mayville Metals for many years. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Lomira.

Survivors include his wife, Adeline; five children, Roger (Linda), New Holstein, David, Campbellsport, Leon "Tiny" (Sherry), Mayville, Denis (Dawn), Fond du Lac, and Janet (Darwin) Backhaus, Mayville; one son-in-law, Ken Pankow, Mayville; eight grandchildren, Robert Pankow, Lora Ehlert, Patrick Margelofsky, Stacy Fischer, Schawn Pankow, Amanda Margelofsky, Kim Margelofsky and Nicole Margelofsky; three great-grandchildren, Cody Pankow, and Jamie and 'soon to be born' Ehlert; one brother, Chester (June), Mayville; and four sisters, Florence Heuer, Beaver Dam, Leola Roggenbauer, Mayville, Alice (Otto) Bartsch, Eagle River, and Patty (Jim) Bartelt, Mayville.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Carol, and one brother, Wallace.
