Daniel Joseph Rice
WAUKESHA - Daniel Joseph Rice, 82, of Waukesha, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000, at The Waters of Westmoreland. He was born Nov. 15, 1917, in Bayview, to the late John and Magdalen (nee Englen) Rice. On June 28, 1947, in Bayview, he married the former Marion Smitka who lovingly survives him. Mr. Rice proudly served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II. He had been employed by Wisconsin Electric Company for 32 years, retiring in 1970.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Marion, and their three daughters, Colleen (William) Mueller and Jennifer (David) Powers, both of Waukesha, and Katherine (Daniel) Beaudry of Muskego. He is further survived by six grandchildren; his sister, Kathryn Rice of Milwaukee; his sister-in-law, Zoe Rice of Milwaukee; his son-in-law, Bruce Arendt of Wausau; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Priscilla Arendt, in 1998, and five brothers and sisters.

Family and friends may call from 5 p.m. until the 7 p.m. memorial service on Friday, Oct. 6, at Randle-Dable Funeral Home, 1110 S. Grand Ave.; Father Glen Graczyk will officiate.

Memorials to the Southeastern Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Association, 6130 W. National Ave., Suite 200, Milwaukee, WI 53214, are appreciated.

Alfie T. Riemer
WAUKESHA - Alfie T. Riemer, 85, of Waukesha, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2000, at the Virginia Health & Rehabilitation Center in Waukesha. Alfie was born Aug. 24, 1915, in Hayward, the daughter of Moses and Bergitta (nee Indebro) Nelson. Alfie was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and attended the Waukesha Kingdom Hall.

Alfie is survived by her sons, Dr. Donald Riemer of Cumberland, Michael (Karen) Riemer of Waukesha, James (Pam) Riemer of Cumberland and Monte (Susan) Hood of Waukesha. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and by her brother, Hudda (Elaine) Nelson of Hayward.

Services for Alfie will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at the Rudolph-Larsen Bros. Funeral Home, East Avenue at Carroll Street in Waukesha. Friends may call on Friday from 4 p.m. until the time of the service at Rudolph Larson.

Joseph Robert ‘Joey’ Sitar
HARTLAND - Joseph Robert "Joey" Sitar, born Aug. 18, 1987, died Monday, Oct. 2, 2000. He will be forever loved and missed by his mother, Tamara Elza (Bozec) and father, James Elza; his brothers, Steven, 16, and David, 11; his sister, Jessica, 17; his grandparents, Marilyn and Robert Bozec; his aunt, Maria Zagar; his uncle, Bill Zagar; and cousin, Brandon Zagar. He is also survived by many other dear family and friends.

Joey was a good student in the eighth grade at Northshore Middle School in Hartland. He enjoyed fishing, festivals, BMX bike riding and computer games.

Friends and family are invited to a service and visitation from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m., with a service at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, at the Luko-Evert Funeral Home, 170 Warren Avenue, Hartland. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at Hartland Village cemetery.

Virginia C. Beranek
NASHOTAH - Virginia C. Beranek (nee Lewandowski) of Nashotah, was born into eternal life Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at the age of 70.

She was born on June 13, 1930, to parents Walter and Caroline Lewandowski. She was a registered nurse at Mt. Sinai Hospital and the V. A. Hospital in Milwaukee.

She is survived by her children, James (Julie) Beranek of Waukesha, Gregory (Judy) Beranek of Wales and Judith (Robert) Grosch of Delafield; and her grandchildren, Joseph, Tyler, Kelsey, Shelley and Ryan. She is further survived by her brother, Jerry (Joan) Lewandowski of Mukwonago; other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Joseph.

The Funeral Mass for Virginia will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 120 Nashotah Road, Delafield. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the church are appreciated.

Harold ‘Harry’ G. Mahnke
WAUKESHA - Harold "Harry" G. Mahnke, of Waukesha, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at Waukesha Memorial Hospital at the age of 83. Harry proudly served his country as a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was in the 81st Squadron and 436th troop carrier, participated in seven campaigns and four invasions. Harry received four Battle Stars and the Presidential Citation. He was a member of the VFW Post, American Legion, a member of the Elks Club and worked for 30 years as a salesman for the D. Kurman Company.

Harry will be deeply missed by his wife, Jeannette "Jean," whom he married on Jan. 19, 1941; his children, Thomas (Jean) of Lake Geneva and Barbara (William) Mielke of Oconomowoc; and his grandchildren, Marc (Bonnie) of South Carolina, Michael of Madison and Anne of Oconomowoc. He is further survived by his brother, Gordon (Ellen) Mahnke of Palm Coast, Fla.; his sister, Lucille (Robert) Lee of Jupiter, Fla.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The funeral service for Harry will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Cesarz, Charapata & Zinnecker Funeral Home on Moreland Boulevard in Waukesha; the Rev. William Humphreys will officiate. Friends may call Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Prairie Home cemetery.

Mary Kathleen ‘Kath’ Burrus
BROOKFIELD - Mary Kathleen "Kath" Burrus (M. Kathleen Boelk) of Brookfield entered into eternal life Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at the age of 83.

She was the dear wife of the late Joe H. Burrus Jr.; beloved mother of Dan (Patti) Thomsen, Tim, Vicki and Jack (Kim) Burrus and Mary (John) Kielich; and the adored grandmother of Ethan, Audree and Halle Burrus. She is also survived by her loving brothers and sisters, Jim, Richard (Gloria) and Roger Boelk, Montie Ann (Bill) Havel and Nancy Osborne. She was the sister-in-law of Helen Boelk and James (Marie) Burrus, and is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and many other members of the extended family. She also leaves behind many, many friends, and she touched the lives of countless others through her many years of community service.

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a parish vigil at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at the Harder Funeral Home Brookfield, 18700 W. Capitol Drive. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon Tuesday, Oct. 10, at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church, 18255 W. Capitol Drive, Brookfield. Interment will follow at Holy Cross cemetery.

Special thanks to Dr. Edward Filmanowicz, the caring nurses, staff and volunteers at St. Joseph’s Hospital, sixth floor west and the hospice.

Matthew A. Getchel, 25
CHANTILLY, Va. - Matthew A. Getchel, formerly of New Berlin, died suddenly Sunday, Oct. 1, 2000, at the age of 25.

He was the cherished son of Joseph and Karen Getchel of New Berlin; loving brother of Stephanie (Dan) Bolda, Amy (Jason) Burgett, JoLee (Chris) Hintz and Birgetta Pierce; dear grandson of Jennie Getchel of Traverse City, Mich., Shirley Buck of Waukesha, Glenn Buck of Prescott Valley, Ariz., and Margaret Pierce of Kissimee, Fla. He will be deeply missed by Larry Porter, Marleigh Pierce, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held after 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at Fox River Christian Church, S46-W24130 Lawnsdale Road, Waukesha (Highway I and Highway 164); the funeral service will follow at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Fox River Christian Church Building Fund are appreciated.

Matt was a U.S. Marines veteran, a graduate of New Berlin West High School and was employed at Suprtek in McClean, Va.

Esther Elizabeth Hanson, 91
MILWAUKEE - Esther Elizabeth Hanson, a resident of St. John’s Tower in Milwaukee for many years, died Oct. 2, 2000, at Columbia Hospital at the age of 91.

She was the aunt of Dorothy Mathias and Lucy (Alvin) Kubly, both of Monroe, Gladys Burgess of Elkhorn and Gordon Gaul of Palo Alto, Calif.

Miss Hanson was born June 4, 1909, in Delafield to Andrew and Bertha (nee Brehmer) Hanson, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her brother, John Hanson, and her sisters, Martha Reese, Ruth Hanson and Clara Gaul.

Esther was a retiree of A. O. Smith.

Memorial services for Esther will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, at St. John Chrysostom Episcopal Church, 111 Genesee St., Delafield. The Rev. D. Robert Seay will be officiating. Burial will take place at Delafield City cemetery.

Loren O. Altreuter
FORT ATKINSON - Loren O. Altreuter, age 57, of Fort Atkinson, died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, at Fort Atkinson Memorial Health Services.

He was born Aug. 16, 1943, in Watertown, the son of Otto and Violet (Scheel) Altreuter. He married Katherine Beirow on April 20, 1963 in Fort Atkinson.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Fort Atkinson. He worked at Friskie’s Pet Care in Jefferson for 34 years.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine, of Fort Atkinson; two sons, Dennis (Teresa) Altreuter of Oconomowoc and Daniel (Lisa) Altreuter of LaCrosse. He is further survived by his granddaughter, Ashley Altreuter and three grandsons, Michael, Adam and Matthew Altreuter. He is also survived by his mother, Violet Altreuter of Jefferson and two brothers: David (Betty) Altreuter of Wisconsin Rapids and Roland (Bonnie) of Jefferson as well as many nieces and nephews.

Loren was preceded in death by his father.

Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m Friday, Oct. 13 at the Olsen Funeral Home, 221 S. Center St., Jefferson and at the church on Saturday after 9:30 a.m. until the time of the services. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Fort Atkinson. The Rev. Ethan Steinbrenner officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in Fort Atkinson.

Beverly Charles Reid
WAUKESHA - Beverly Charles Reid, 81, of Waukesha died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at the Linden Grove Health Care Facility. Bev was born Nov. 4, 1918, in Waukesha, son of the late Charles Stuart and Charlotte Josephine (nee Hendley) Reid.

He graduated from Waukesha High School in 1936. He assisted his father in contracting and building. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Jan. 29, 1941, with the ordinance department and took training at the proving ground in Illinois and Camp Haan in California. He served overseas from 1942 to 1945 in England; Africa; Sicily, Italy; France and Germany. He was honorably discharged as a tech Sgt. in August, 1945.

He went back to work with his father and worked for other contractors for a time, but a bothersome back forced him to do lighter work so he learned to use a typewriter, comptometer and adding machine. He did repair work under an apprenticeship with Harvey (Ruth) Zillmer. He bought Zillmer’s Office Supply and Zillmer’s Hallmark card shop in 1965.

On Nov. 16, 1946, he married Enid (nee Pasko) at St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Waukesha. She preceded him in death May 10, 1993.

Bev is survived by three children, David Reid and Daniel (Rose) Reid, both of Waukesha, and Ellen (Michael) Treptow of West Allis. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Brian Reid of Hartland, Rebecca Reid of Oconomowoc and Stephanie and Susan Reid of Waukesha, along with a sister, Charlotte (Seybold) Simon of Sun City Center, Fla. and other relatives and friends. In addition to his wife Enid, he was preceded in death by one son, Don Reid, sister, Jane Reid, and brother, Stuart Reid.

A memorial service for Bev will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000, at the Cesarz, Charapata & Zinnecker Funeral Home West on Moreland Boulevard. The Rev. Frank Gaylord from First United Methodist Church will officiate. Following cremation, burial will be in Prairie Home cemetery in Waukesha. Friends may call at the funeral home on Moreland Boulevard from 5 p.m. until the time of the service at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2000.

Victor Joseph Pagano
CITY OF PEWAUKEE - Victor Joseph Pagano, 84, of the City of Pewaukee, died Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, at Waukesha Memorial Hospital.

He was born Jan. 15, 1916, in Marblehead to the late Calogero and Caterina Pagano.

In his youth, he worked as a paper boy for the "Wisconsin News," was a caddy at Merrill Hills Country Club and a repair boy at Vetta’s Shoe Shop. In 1934 he became a grocer at the Stop and Shop Market at the Waukesha Five Points until the store’s closing in 1964. During World War II he worked a second shift at the Michael Yundt War Plant. In 1962 he founded Pagano’s Pantry, a Pewaukee food and liquor store, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1984, at the age of 68.

Victor will be lovingly missed by his wife, Charlotte (nee Bliesath), and their children, Charlotte (Richard) Souslin of Issaquah, Wash., Victor Pagano Jr. of Pewaukee and Gina Pagano of Redmond, Wash. He was the beloved brother of Kelly (Grace) Pagano and Rose Pagano, both of Waukesha, Annie Biscuso of Columbus, Ohio, Joseph (Elaine) Pagano of Waukesha and Leonard (Lorraine) Pagano of Jasper, Ga. He is survived by other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents, Victor was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Nancy, in 1938.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, at St. Anthony on the Lake, W280-N2101 Prospect Ave., Pewaukee, with Fr. Thomas Venne officiating. A private burial service will be held at St. Joseph cemetery. Memorials to the church are appreciated.

Helen A. Makela
PEWAUKEE - Helen A. Makela, of Pewaukee, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2000, at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee at age 82. She was born Dec. 21, 1917, in Superior, the daughter of Gustav and Hannah (nee Bentsen) Lindquist.

Helen is the beloved wife of George W. Makela, whom she married on Sept. 28, 1940, in Milwaukee. She is the loving mother of Joan (James) Gleason of the town of Waukesha and Bruce (Mary) Makela of Wales. She is the sister of Hannah Rawn of Superior. Also surviving are three grandchildren, James Gleason, Joni Hahn and Lory Kraft; two great-grandchildren, Dustin and Ashley Hahn, and other relatives and friends. Helen was preceded in death by her brothers, Clarence Lindquist and Elmer Lindquist, and her sisters, Lilly Lindquist and Agnes M. Lindquist.

Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, at the Cesarz, Charapata and Zinnecker Funeral Home-West, 237 N. Moreland Blvd. Pastor Rob Resheske will officiate. Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Private interment will be in Prairie Home cemetery.

A heartfelt thanks to Dr. John P. Hanson,Jr. and staff, St. Luke’s nurses on 4th floor women’s, 8th floor oncology and at Heartland Health Care Center. Your loving care will always be remembered and cherished by us. All those touched by her kindness have been blessed and Helen will forever leave footprints in our hearts.

WAUKESHA - Edward J. Bromley, age 39, of Waukesha, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2000, at his home.

Gene Roger Burgett
MERTON - Gene Roger Burgett returned to the loving arms of Jesus Christ on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2000, after a long struggle with cancer. Gene was born on May 17, 1931, in Waukesha, the son of Roscoe and Ruth (Pritzlaff) Burgett. Gene was retired from MagneTek Inc. (formerly the Louis Allis Company of Milwaukee). He honorably served in the United State Air Force with the 128th Tactical Control Squadron Ang (Tac) stationed at Bangor, Maine.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Barbara Anne (Rector) Burgett of Merton and his cherished children: Barbara Jean Wandsnider, Renee Suzanne Sweda, Michael Gene and Lisa Burgett, Katheryn Elizabeth Zimmerman and Jeffrey David and Vickie Burgett. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Marie Burgett. He will be deeply missed by his 13 precious grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 12, at the Luko-Evert Funeral Home, 170 Warren Ave., Hartland beginning at 4 p.m. with a funeral eulogy at 7 p.m. There will be a private burial service on Friday, Oct. 13, at the Hartland Village cemetery.
