Quentin Hoth, 80,

Quentin Hoth, 80, Park Falls, died Wednesday, January 30, 2002, at Flambeau Hospital, Park Falls. He was born July 28, 1921, in Butternut, the son of Walter and Cecile (Smith) Hoth.

His early life and schooling were in Butternut. After his schooling he entered the United States Army where he survived the attack on Pearl Harbor and then served in the 881st Antiaircraft Gun Battery during WW II. He came to Park Falls after serving his country. On November 7, 1946, he married Rose Marie Schmidt. Quent worked for the Flambeau Paper Mill as a pulp yard scaler, was a member of the Park Falls American Legion, and a former member of the Park Falls Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by: Three children: James Hoth of Glidden; Jerry (Deborah) Hoth of Kenmore, Washington; Barbara (Marland) Sherman of Madison; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Rose Marie in 1995, and his brother Everet.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday from St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Park Falls. Deacon Chet Ball will officiate.

Burial will follow at Nola Cemetery in Park Falls with military rites under the auspices of the Park Falls American Legion Post.

A visitation will be held at the Novitzke Funeral Home in Park Falls from 4 until 8 p.m. today.

Raymond M. Horvatin, 85,

CHIPPEWA FALLS — Raymond M. Horvatin, 85, a resident of the Chippewa Manor, Chippewa Falls, and formerly of the town of Wheaton, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002, at the Chippewa Manor.

He was born Jan. 4, 1917, in Joliet, Ill., the son of John and Mary (Kambic) Horvatin. He was a milk hauler and worked for Peter’s Meat Co. “Packerland.” He married Jennie Plonka on June 1, 1940, at St. Andrew’s Church in Chicago, Ill. He was a member of KSKJ and St. Charles Church.

He enjoyed gardening, deer hunting, bird watching, fishing with his grandsons, spending time with his family, woodworking and carpentry.

He is survived by two sons, Raymond “Richard” (Mary) Horvatin of Chippewa Falls and Andrew (Kelly) of Wheeler; four daughters, Judy (Gary) Gaier of Tony; Lorraine (Richard) Gardow of Chippewa Falls, Kathleen (Jon) Hansman of Ashland and Susan (Bernard) Staves of Wheeler; two brothers, William (friend, Shirley Schaller) and Clarence (Juanita) both of Chippewa Falls; two sisters, Helen Ristau of Eau Claire and Marian (George) Mercier of Brookfield; 21 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie, on July 23, 1998; his parents; two brothers, John and Joseph Harvatin; and one sister, Josephine Sutter.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at St. Charles Church, Chippewa Falls. The Rev. Eric Linzmaier will be celebrant of the funeral Mass. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Chippewa Falls.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Friday, Feb. 1, and until 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Horan Funeral Home, Chippewa Falls. There will be a Christian Vigil Service at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made out to the Chippewa County Historical Society or St. Charles Borromeo Children’s Fund.

Margaret Larson

Margaret Caroline Larson, age 90, died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, in Memorial Medical Center, Ashland. She was born in Bismarck, N.D., on Jan. 5, 1912, to Carl and Clara (Holm) Larvick.

Margaret was raised in Temvick, N.D., and she graduated from the Oak Grove High School in Fargo, N.D. She attended Valley City State Teachers College, where she received her bachelor of science degree in education. Later she received her master’s degree and her specialist degree in reading from the University of Wisconsin-Superior. Her first teaching position was in Hazelton, N.D.

In 1938, she journeyed by train and car to Port Wing, where she interviewed and received her next teaching position. She met and in 1940, at Bismarck, N.D., she married Irving Larson. She and Irving raised two sons, Keith and Warren. Margaret took time off from teaching and together they raised their children and farmed for several years in Port Wing. Irving passed away in 1957, and Margaret went back to her second love, teaching.

She taught in the South Shore Schools, retiring in 1977, and received a certificate of honor from then, Governor Patrick Lucy for 40 years of service to education. She touched hundreds of children, and cherished her students and lifelong friends of the South Shore community schools where she worked, Oulu, Port Wing and Herbster. She continued to live and work in the Port Wing area, and substitute taught in the South Shore Schools until her 80th birthday. After retiring, she spent several years compiling volumes of information on the history of Port Wing. With the help and knowledge of many Port Wingites, she published the Memories of Port Wing book. It was a historical review of the Port Wing community, and was filled with pictures and stories honoring the many great founders of what Margaret considered the “best kept secret on the South Shore....Port Wing.”

She enjoyed her home, loved her family, and visiting with her many friends. She is now above us and at home with her first love, Irving. Her memberships included the First Lutheran Church in Port Wing, South Shore Civic Club, and the Chequamegon Retired Teachers Association.

In addition to her husband, Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Clara Larvick, and a brother, Martin.

She is survived by two sons, Keith (Margie) Larson, Port Wing; and Warren (Kathy) Larson, Williston, N.D.; two grandsons, Kurt (fiancé Barb) Larson, Superior; and Kris Ahman, Williston, N.D.; one granddaughter, Tanya (Al) Mueller, St. Cloud, Minn.; her pride and joy, her great-grandson, Wyatt Mueller, St. Cloud, Minn.; and a brother, Harold Larvick, Westlaco, Texas.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, April 3, in the First Lutheran Church in Port Wing, until the 11 a.m. Funeral Service. The Rev. Donald West, interim pastor, will officiate.

Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery, Port Wing.

Active pallbearers for the service will be David C. Olson, David R. Olson, Joseph Bailey, Wallace Chamberlin, Kenneth Jardine, Charles Larson, Kenneth Johnson and James Swanson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Orville Swanson, Warren Bailey, Russ Hurt, Cliff Hoagland, Gary Sherman and Willard Ogren.

The Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home in Superior is assisting the family with arrangements.

Ruth Weidinger

BAYFIELD — Ruth D. Weidinger, age 91, of Bayfield, passed away Monday, April 1, 2002, at Northern Lights Health Care Center in Washburn. She was born Sept. 6, 1910, in the Town of Russell, the daughter of George and Marian (Perves) Weidinger.

Ruth attended and graduated from Carver school in the Town of Russell. After her schooling, she worked on the family’s dairy farm. She sold apples and vegetables in South Superior for many years and was known by many as “Apple Annie.” She retired in 1994 after 60 years of working on the family farm. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Bayfield. She was a member of the Eastern Star and Sister Rebekkahs in Bayfield. She was also a member of the Town of Russell Sunnyside Club. She enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening and having family over to her home for holiday dinners.

She is survived by her sister, Helen (Everett) Hyde of Bayfield; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Lavonia Langhammer and Esther Weidinger; a brother, Edmond Weidinger and an infant brother.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 4, at the Bayfield Presbyterian Church, with Pastor John Green officiating.

Interment will take place in the Greenwood Cemetery in Bayfield.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, on Thursday, at the church.

Arrangements are by the Bratley Funeral Home, in Washburn.

Margaret Colenso

IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. — Margaret Edla Colenso died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at Maryhill Manor Nursing Home in Niagara.

She was born Oct. 9, 1915, in Houghton, Mich., where her father was employed as a miner at the time. Her parents, Charles Uusimaa/Johnson and Helmi (Helen) Kekolahti-Luusua Johnson, moved to Ashland when she was three and where she received her education.

Prior to her marriage to the late John R. Colenso, in 1939, she was manager of a millinery and accessories shop in Ironwood. They moved to Iron Mountain in 1948, from Chicago and opened the specialty clothing store known as "Colenso's Inc."

She served as one of the directors of the company and following her husband's death in 1968, acted as chairman of that board until the business was liquidated in 1982.

Since that time, Mrs. Colenso had worked as a volunteer for the Dickinson County Hospital, Hospital League and her church. She served as an elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford and was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, who honored her with the "Woman of the Year" award in 1994. She was also active in the Tuesday Literary Club, Women's Club, Chippewa Club and Pine Grove Country Club.

Mrs. Colenso lost a son, John 3 Robert, in 1942, but leaves a daughter, Sherry Lynn Dillard of Kingsford; two sons, Charles Todd (Dana) Colenso of Spread Eagle, Wis., and Kim David (Heidi) Colenso of Albuquerque, N.M.; six grandchildren, Inara (John) Howard of Carpenters ville, Ill., Tamara (Steven) Juul of Iron Mountain, Brian (Lisa) Pickard of Tempe, Ariz., Jason (Renae) Colenso of Niagara, Wis.; Sonja (Simon) Hall of Reading, England, and Kerry Colenso of Portland, Ore.; eight great-grandchildren, Devin Bailey, John III, and Brynn Howard of Carpentersville, Kyle and Cameron Pickard of Tempe, Trent Juul of Iron Mountain, Tristin and Annalise Colenso of Niagara; two brothers, Clarence Johnson of Ashland and Raymond (Elaine) Johnson of Washburn, Wis.; three sisters, Gertrude (Walter) Koepsel of Marengo, Wis., Lorraine (Arthur) WaIler of Kingman, Ariz., and Shirley (Fred) Grenz of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Kingsford.

A memorial service will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Rev. Michael March will officiate.

Burial will be in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain.

A memorial fund will be established for the First Presbyterian Church.

The Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home of Iron Mountain is in charge of arrangements.
