CRIMORA, Va. -- Betty Jane Wheeler Bartley, 72, of Route 1, Box 3099, died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at her home.
She was born Feb. 20, 1926, in Uniontown, Pa., a daughter of Dorsey and Violet Collins Wheeler.
Her husband, Elmer Leroy Bartley, whom she married Nov. 27, 1982, survives.
Also surviving are seven sons, Edward J. Wheeler, Shinnston, Salvatore E. Rota, Lumberport, Anthony J. Rota, Winslow, Ark., Lawrence N. Rota, Zanesville, Ohio, Robert L. Walsh, Audubon, N.J., Daniel E. Walsh, Hampton, Va., and David Bartley, Waynesboro, Va.; three daughters, Theresa M. Resino, Franklinville, N.J., Mary E. Cook, Waynesboro, and Lorene Green, Blackwater, Mo., and 27 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Albert Wheeler.
Mrs. Bartley was retired from Service America of Waynesboro.
Clyde D. Brake
BUCKHANNON -- Clyde D. Brake, 88, of Baldwin, Ga., died Friday, June 5, 1998, at Baldwin.
He was born Oct. 3, 1909, in Rock Cave, a son of the late Charles Brake and Mary Crawford Brake.
Surviving are his wife, Merle Artha Baxa Brake, and two sisters, Madge Broke, Largo, Fla., and Mary Lewis, Daytona, Fla.
Mr. Brake was a member of Cave United Methodist Church, a U.S. Army veteran and a retired machinist.
Ovah B. Bonner
FAIRMONT -- Ovah B. Bonner, 91, of Fairmont, died Saturday, June 6, 1998, at Fairmont General Hospital, where she had been a patient.
She was born March 25, 1907, in Wallace, a daughter of the late Scott C. and Ernestine Dye Wallace.
Her husband, Dr. Rev. J. William Bonner, preceded her in death.
Surviving are three children, Mrs. David (Ernestine) Nigh, Mrs. June Eddy and John Wallace Bonner, all of Fairmont; five grandchildren, Mark David Nigh, John Allan Nigh, John Wesley Bonner and Stacey Bonner, all of Fairmont, and Sue Ann Brock, Meadowview, Va., and one stepgrandchild, Sherri Sandford, Fairmont.
She was also preceded in death by one son-in-law, Nelson E. Eddy, and one stepgrandson, Roger W. Eddy.
Mrs. Bonner and her husband spent 65 years in service to the Lord through the American Baptist Convention. She was active in many phases of Christian work including the Minister-At-Large Program for 17 years.
She had been a member for over 50 years at the Baptist Temple Church of Fairmont, where she held office in the American Baptist Women Association, the youth department and was a teacher of the Crusaders class. She was an active member in the Past Grand Noble of the West Virginia Rebekah Lodge No. 64, being a member for over 60 years.
She was also an active member in the Colonel Morgan Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She graduated from West Liberty College and was a former teacher in the Fayette County School system.
David A. Messenger
WESTON -- David A. Messenger, Torpedoman 2nd Class, 23, of Virginia Beach, formerly of Weston, died Thursday, June 4, 1998, in Virginia Beach, following an accident.
He was born July 13, 1974, in Weston, a son of Beth Montgomery Burns and Charlie Burns, Beaver, and the late Henry A. Messenger.
Also surviving are his paternal grandfather, Lawrence Messenger, Jane Lew; his maternal grandparents, Harold and Betty Montgomery, Camden; one brother, Harold Messenger, Virginia Beach, Va.; one nephew, Harold Messenger Jr., and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Gladys Messenger.
Mr. Messenger enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1992 following his graduation from Shady Spring High School in June of 1992. He had the rank of E/5 Torpedoman 2nd Class. He had been aboard the USS Saratoga of Jacksonville, Fla., and was presently with the USS Roosevelt in Norfolk, Va.
He was an avid athlete and enjoyed baseball, wrestling, bowling and softball. He also enjoyed hunting the hills of West Virginia.
Friends will be received from 4-9 p.m. Tuesday at Rose-Quesenberry Funeral Home, Shady Spring Chapel, 729 Flat Top Road, Shady Spring. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Shady Spring Chapel. Interment will follow at 4 p.m. in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Jane Lew, with the Rev. Clifford West officiating. Full military honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.
Hobert A. McClain
SALEM -- Hobert A. McClain, 77, of Route 1, Patterson Street, died at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 1998, at Louis A. Johnson Veteran's Administration Medical Center following an extended illness.
He was born March 7, 1921, in Birch Run, Doddridge County, a son of the late William and Ida Snider McClain.
His wife, Mary Blanche Nicholson McClain, whom he married Nov. 3, 1945, survives.
Also surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Lynn A. and Debra McClain, Port Washington, Ohio, William and Barbara McClain and Nelson and Kimberly McClain, both of Salem; three daughters, Mrs. Richard (Lynda) Nicholson, Route 2, Waldo Run, Mrs. John (Judy) Edgell, Fleming, Ohio, and Mrs. John (Jill) Garrison, Blue Springs, Mich.; two brothers, Willis McClain, Route 3, Meathouse Fork, and Stacey McClain, New Milton; two sisters, Hazel "Peggy" Flint, Fairfield, Conn., and Mary Burnside, Pittsburgh, Pa., and 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Eugene, Denzil, Dempsey and Marshall McClain, and two sisters, Mable Carder and Audra James.
Mr. McClain was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church and a retired employee of Harvey's Glass with 13 years of service. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran serving in the European Theater.
Friends will be received from 3-9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral service on Tuesday at Greathouse Funeral Home, Salem Chapel, with the Rev. Lillian Simmons officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Olive Baptist Church cemetery.
Lena Nottingham
GASSAWAY -- Lena Nottingham, 85, of Duck, died Sunday, June 7, 1998, at Braxton County Memorial.
She was born Aug. 18, 1912, a daughter of the late Burl Paintiff and Minnie Siders.
Surviving are three daughters, Marion Nicholas, Duck, Eva Schmidlin, Sherrills Ford, N.C., and Carol Vaughan, Quick; three sons, Ralph Nottingham, Duck, Roy Nottingham, Camp Hill, Pa., and Rodney Nottingham, Bridgeport; two half sisters, Willma Nottingham and Marlene Nottingham, both of Zanesville, Ohio, and 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Nottingham was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting. She was a member of Hope Baptist Church in Frametown.
Rex K. Bumgardner
Rex Keith Bumgardner, 74, of 1559 Hoffman Ave., Clarksburg, died at 12:35 p.m. Monday, June 1, 1998, in United Hospital Center.
He was born Sept. 6, 1923 in Clarksburg, a son of the late Keith O. Bumgardner and Bonalee Kerr Bumgardner.
Surviving are four sons, Frederick Rex and daughter-in-law, Prisilla Benincosa Bumgardner, Bridgeport, Rex Douglas Bumgardner, Laurel, Md., Rex Keith and Christopher Bumgardner, both of Clarksburg; two grandchildren, Frederick Adrian "Sonny" Bumgardner, Bridgeport, and Jaqualynn Renee Bumgardner, Clarksburg, and extended family, James Franklin Kuffner, Anmoore, and Lisa Ann Feeney, Bridgeport, and two former wives, Mary Alice Smith Johnson and Judy Kuffner Bumgardner.
He was also preceded in death by one sister, Phyllis Tomash.
Mr. Bumgardner was a 1941 graduate of the former Victory High School and graduated from West Virginia University. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1942-1946.
He played professional football for five years with the Buffalo Bills and the Cleveland Browns, during which time he played in five championship games.
Mr. Bumgardner served two terms as Sheriff of Harrison County, first from 1957 to 1960 and second from 1965-1968. He was a U.S. Marshal from 1969 to 1975. He had also operated the Sport Shop in Clarksburg from 1961-1964. He was twice a delegate to Republican National Conventions.
Previously a member of several civic and fraternal organizations, he currently was a member of Bel Meadows Country Club, West Virginia University Alumni Association and was an alumnus of the Cleveland Browns Football Organization. He was a co-founder of the Bridgeport Country Club.
Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main St., Clarksburg. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Bridgeport cemetery.

Thelma Cleavenger
BUCKHANNON -- Thelma Cleavenger, 56, of Buckhannon, died Monday, June 1, 1998, at her residence.
She was born Oct. 30, 1941, in Nutter Fort, a daughter of the late Harry Osburn and Velma Skidmore.
Surviving are three sons, Rick Reger, Uniontown, Pa., Phillip Cleavenger and Marc Cleavenger, both of Buckhannon, and three sisters, Nancy Osburn, Uniontown, Pa., Dorothy Walker, Missouri, and Juanita Corkern, Massachusetts.
She was also preceded in death by her foster parents, French and Flora Reger; four brothers; one sister; one son, and one daughter.
Ms. Cleavenger was a member of the 700 Club and the Bible Deliverance Tabernacle on Horner Road, Weston. She was a homemaker.
James Coddington
PENNSBORO -- James William Coddington, 88, of Route 1, Greenwood, Buck Run community, died Sunday, May 31, 1998, in Parkersburg.
He was born Aug. 15, 1909, at Friendsville, Md., a son of the late Eldridge M. and Addie Friend Coddington.
His wife, Helen Grace Collier Coddington, whom he married March 31, 1946, survives.
Also surviving are three sons, William B. Coddington, Louisville, Ky., James E. Coddington, Kennesaw, Ga., and Robert R. Coddington, Westminster, Md.; three daughters, Barbara June Parker, Parkersburg, Helen R. Blair, Greenwood, and Charlotte S. Linnell, North Canton, Ohio; three brothers, George Coddington, McHenry, Md., Richard "Dick" Coddington, Frostburg, Md., and Robert R. Coddington, Manassas Park, Va.; three sisters, Florence L. Porter, Silver Spring, Md., Dora Wells, Desert Hot Spring, Calif., and Anna Marie Williams, Baltimore, Md.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Mr. Coddington was retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture where he served in a managerial position for many years. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland with a bachelor's and master's degree in Agriculture Economics. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was a member of the Harris-Ritchie Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Harrisville, the Harrisville Baptist Church and Harmony Lodge 59, AF&AM of Pennsboro.
Teddie G. Gibson
Teddie Gene Gibson, 50, of Route 1, Wolf Summit, died at his home Monday, June 1, 1998, following a sudden illness.
He was born Jan. 29, 1948, in Nitro, a son of Opal Maxine Gibson, Nitro, and the late Clifford Ray Gibson.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Pearl Gibson; one son, Tellie Gene Gibson, Buckhannon; two daughters, Christy Wheeler, St. Albans, and Katrinia Sandy, Buckhannon; two brothers, Eddie Gibson, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Gary Gibson, Nitro, and five grandchildren.
Harvey Laco Jenkins, 71, of Hamill Avenue, Clarksburg, died Monday, June 1, 1998, at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born April 11, 1927, in Glen Falls, a son of the late William Henry and Eva B. Stull Jenkins.
His wife, Anne Mae Stutler Jenkins, preceded him in death in January 1981.
Surviving are six sons, Kenneth Jenkins, West Milford, Fred Jenkins, Robert Jenkins, David Jenkins and Gary Jenkins, all of Clarksburg, and Steven Jenkins, Walkersville; one daughter, Connie Collins, Lost Creek; four grandchildren; three brothers, Roy Jenkins, Kingman, Ariz., Orvel Jenkins, Morgantown, and Okey Jenkins, Warren, Ohio, and one sister, Ruby Hobbs, California.
He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Paul, Bob and Alvin Jenkins.
Mr. Jenkins was a glass packer at Pittsburgh Plate Glass and was retired from Fourco Glass, Jerry Run. He was a member of Clarksburg Lodge 52, Loyal Order of the Moose, and Clarksburg Aerie 2353 Fraternal Order of Eagles.
Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. today and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Davis Funeral Home, Clarksburg Chapel, 443 West Pike St. in Clarksburg. The funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Robert Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in Stonewall Park cemetery.
