James Shuman

James Bennett "J.B." Shuman, 45, of Lost Creek, died Wednesday, May 27, 1998, at his residence following an extended illness.

He was born July 9, 1952, in Clarksburg, a son of Marguerite Andrick Jones, Tennessee, and the late Clyde Bennett Shuman.

His wife, Joyce E. Randolph Shuman, whom he married Sept. 19, 1970, survives.

Also surviving are his adoptive mother, Nola J. Shuman; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Joel B. and Amber Shuman, Lost Creek, Jesse B. Shuman and Justin R. Shuman, both at home; one daughter, Mrs. Chauncey (April) Johnson, Lost Creek; two grandchildren, Jerry B. Shuman and Jesse J. Johnson; two stepgrandchildren, Bobbi Jo Johnson and Chauncey Johnson III; one sister, Pamela J. Starkey, West Milford; one half sister, Jennifer Clark, Illinois; one half brother, Les B. Jones, Chicago, and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Shuman was vice president of Nexus Drilling and a United Methodist minister. He was a member of the West Milford United Methodist Church.

Friends will be received from 7-9 p.m. Saturday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Davis Funeral Home, Clarksburg Chapel, 443 W. Pike St. His body will be taken to the West Milford United Methodist Church to lie in state one hour prior to the 11 a.m. service on Monday, with the Rev. Gary Rapking officiating.

At the request of Mr. Shuman, following the funeral service he will be cremated. Contributions may be made to People's Hospice, P.O. Box 1680, Clarksburg, W.Va., 26302-1680.

Opal A. Stoneking

WESTON -- Opal Alice Stoneking, 89, a resident of Holbrook Nursing Home, Buckhannon, formerly of 514 Court Ave., died at 7:41 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, 1998, in Holbrook Nursing Home following an extended illness.

She was born Oct. 8, 1908, in Cedarville, Gilmer County, a daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Clowser and Mary Luzader Clowser.

Her husband, Frank Stoneking, whom she married Oct. 12, 1926, preceded her in death on May 13, 1990.

Surviving are one son, Billy Gene Stoneking, Bridgeport; two grandsons and daughters-in-law, William L. and Verlene Stoneking and Robert F. and Johanna Stoneking, all of Bridgeport; two great-grandchildren, Chad William Stoneking and Eric Michael Stoneking, and three stepgreat-grandsons, Chris, Brendan and Sean Gibat, all of Bridgeport.

She was also preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

Mrs. Stoneking and her husband owned and operated the Stoneking Luncheon in Roanoke for 40 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Weston and was a lifetime member of the Theresa Snaith Auxiliary of the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Boyle Funeral Home, 322 Main Ave., Weston. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Richard Renquest officiating. Interment will follow in Weston Masonic cemetery.

Lynn H. Williams

Lynn H. Williams, 59, of 109 Summit Court, Clarksburg, died at 5:33 p.m. Monday, May 25, 1998, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.

He was born Sept. 15, 1938, in Parkersburg, a son of the late Walter Lynn Williams and Alma Kanney Williams.

His wife, Mercedes Forte Williams, whom he married Jan. 23, 1961, survives.

Also surviving are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Lynn M. and Donna B. Williams and Kristopher K. Williams, all of Clarksburg; one granddaughter, Ashley D. Williams; one niece, Mychael Eisen and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Inaleigh Johnson-Eisen.

Mr. Williams had worked for UCAR in Anmoore as a member of the preparation crew. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church of Clarksburg, the OCAW-AFL-CIO, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and was a past member of the Harrison County United Way.

He was past president of Summit Center, past board member of New Directions, past president and executive board member of the National Association of Mental Health Planning and Advisory Councils, and vice president of the board of directors of the Harrison County Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was a master mason in Beulah Lodge No. 15.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Scott T. Holcombe officiating. Interment will follow in the Christ Church Columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted by Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 1492, or the Harrison Chapter of American Red Cross, 165 S. Oak St., Clarksburg, W.Va. 26301 in his memory.

Esther A. Bonner

ALMA -- Esther A. Bonner, 61, of Route 2, Pennsboro, Josephs Mills community, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, in Ohio Valley Medical Center, Wheeling. She was born in Middlebourne, a daughter of the late James L. and Sarah Moore Markle. Her husband, Robert R. Bonner, survives.

Also surviving are two sons, James Bonner, Camanche, Iowa, and Michael Bonner, Sistersville; two daughters, Jeanine Simpson, Tunnelton, and Patricia Stewart, Sistersville; one brother, William Markle, Alma; two sisters, Mary Myer, Wilbur, and Shirley Deulley, Alma; five grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by one brother, John Markle.

Mrs. Bonner was a homemaker and a member of Riggs Memorial Chapel United Methodist Church, Josephs Mills.

Sara J. Goodwin

Sara Jane Goodwin, 67, of 1501 Crislip Avenue, Clarksburg, died at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 1999, following an extended illness. She was born March 2, 1932, in Clarksburg, a daughter of the late Markwood P. and Virginia Burton Watkins. Her first husband, Meigs Clifford Cork, preceded her in death in September of 1972. Her second husband, Howard B. Goodwin Jr., whom she married Feb. 18, 1960, preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 1973.

Surviving are four sons, David Cork and wife, Diane, Bryan Goodwin and wife, Melissa and John Goodwin, all of Clarksburg, and James Cork and wife, Cathy, Morgantown; three daughters, Diane Hacker and husband, David, Fairmont, Janice Rogers and husband, Richard, Lost Creek, and Leigh Ann Bell and husband, Terry, Clarksburg; one brother, David Watkins and wife, Catherine, Follansbee; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and one aunt, Marion Traggie, Weirton. She was also preceded in death by one son, Mark Cork and one daughter, Jane Goodwin.

Mrs. Goodwin was a member of the Good Hope Prayer Chapel and was a homemaker.

Friends may call Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St., from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Ernest Smith Jr., conducting the service. Interment will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

Susanna A. Knotts

GRAFTON -- Susanna Angeline "Anna¨ Knotts, 70, of Route 3, Grafton, died Monday, March 29, 1999, at the residence of her son, Charles Knotts. She was born Aug. 7, 1928, in Thornton, a daughter of the late George W. and Elizabeth Williams Myers. Her husband, Guy O. Knotts, preceded her in death on Aug. 7, 1983.

Surviving are two sons, Charles W. Knotts and wife, Wanda, Grafton, and Jerry A. Knotts and wife, Alecia, Grafton; two daughters, Cindy A. Johnson and husband, Roger, Pineville, and Linda C. Batton and husband, Jacob, Grafton; an adopted daughter, Mrs. Patty L. Knotts, Morgantown; three brothers, Leonard Myers and wife, Shirley, and Kenneth Myers and wife, Mary, both of Thornton, and James Myers and wife, Loretta, Grafton; six grandchildren, Susanna, Linda, Tina, Jonathan, Sheena and Nathan; one great-grandchild, Jessica Lee; several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by one son in infancy, Terry Lee Knotts; one sister, Mary Myers Freeze; one brother and one sister in infancy, Homer Myers and Bertha Myers; five half brothers, Clarence, Harry, LeRoy, Luther and Robert; and two sisters, May Williams and Octava Myers.

Ms. Knotts was a homemaker and foster caregiver. She liked cooking, embroidering and quilting. She was Protestant.

Friends may call Bartlett Funeral Home, 202 McGraw Ave., Grafton, until the time of the service at 2 p.m. today, with the Rev. James E. Johnson and the Rev. David Brown officiating. Interment will take place at the Bluemont cemetery.

Louise M. Lipscomb

BELINGTON -- Louise Moales Lipscomb, 72, a resident of Route 2, the 4-H Road, Philippi, died at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 1999, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, following a brief illness.

She was born Feb. 6, 1927, in Quick, a daughter of the late Jacob Thomas and Esta O'Dell Moales. On Feb. 5, 1972, in Richwood, she was united in marriage to Gilbert F. "Jay¨ Lipscomb, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, William G. Lipscomb, Pittsburgh, Pa., and Gil Lipscomb, Bluefield; one daughter and son-in-law, Jim and Mary Poling, Philippi; two grandsons, Brian Lipscomb and wife, Ronitta, both of South Pointe, Ohio, and Brad Lipscomb and wife, Wendy, both of Greenville, S.C.; three granddaughters, Andrea Wheeler and husband, Colt, both of Huntington, Corie Poling, Charlotte, N.C., and Holly Poling, Morgantown; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Earrie Moales, Quick; four sisters, Phyllis Litton, Charleston, Virginia O. Carlin, Yuba City, Calif., Mildred Ann Sturm, Mt. Zion, and Iva Lee Dodd, Tumwater, Wash.; one sister-in-law, Jenny Lou Moales, Philippi; several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by one brother.

Mrs. Lipscomb was a graduate of Elkview High School in Elkview, and a homemaker. She was a member of the Ashbury United Methodist Church, Belington.

Daniel H. Parks

Daniel Homer Parks, 30, of 130 Washington Avenue, Clarksburg, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, in West Virginia University Hospital, Morgantown, following an extended illness. He was born Feb. 1, 1969, in Clarksburg, a son of Homer David Parks and Ina H. Kelly Parks.

Also surviving are one uncle, Roy Kelly, Buckhannon; four aunts, Olive Arbogast, Clarksburg, Louise Cameron, Missouri, Geraldine and Maxine Kelly, both of Tennessee; several cousins and great-cousins.

Mr. Parks had been employed with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the Fingerprint Classification Section. He attended the Evangelical Congregational Church, Oakmound.

Edna E. Willey

MIDDLEBOURNE -- Edna E. Willey, 88, of Middlebourne, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, in Sunrise Healthcare Center, New Martinsville.

She was born July 14, 1910, in Iuka, a daughter of the late Henry H. and Sarah Nolan Crawford. Her first husband, Charles A. Weekley, preceded her in death in 1952. Her second husband, John D. Willey, also preceded her in death in 1991.

Surviving are two sons and their wives, Sara and Lloyd A. Weekley, Bridgeport, and Sadie and Landis G. Weekley, Middlebourne; one daughter and husband, Lois and Karroll Booth, Coraopolis, Pa.; two brothers, Carl Crawford, Wheeling, and Ray Crawford, New Martinsville; three sisters, Betty Lemasters and Dixie Lemasters, both of Weirton, and Fay Minor, Piqua, Ohio; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; four stepsons, Stanley Willey, New Cumberland, Ray Willey, Centerpoint, Marion Willey, Wheaton, Ill., and Don Willey, King Arthur's Court, Ill.; one stepdaughter, Deloris Nieves, Villa Park, Ill.; eight stepgrandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, Irene Blankenship; five brothers, Clemit, Howard, Ora, Gail and Ross Crawford; one grandson, Tommy Weekley; and one stepson, John Willey.

Mrs. Willey was a member of the Middlebourne United Methodist Church, and the O.E.S. Ruth Chapter No. 7, Middlebourne.

She was a past noble grand of Emily Rebekah Lodge No. 82, Middlebourne, receiving honors for 50 years of service in 1992.

Sara J. Goodwin

Sara Jane Goodwin, 67, of 1501 Crislip Avenue, Clarksburg, died at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 1999, following an extended illness.

Shirley A. Heater

FRENCH CREEK -- Shirley Ann Bender Heater, 57, of P.O. Box 24, Rock Cave, died at 6:40 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Buckhannon.

She was born Oct. 15, 1941, in Kanawha Head, a daughter of the late Clarence and Barbara Alice Humphrey Bender.
Her husband, Sherley Marvin Heater, preceded her in death.

Surviving are three sons, Charlie Duke, Billy Joe and Danny Lee Heater, all of Rock Cave; two daughters, Merrie Robin Lloyd, Denver, Colo., and Sherry Lynn Gregory, Rock Cave; four sisters, Martha Grace Beckman and Flossie Leola Cutright, both of Everettsville, Annabelle Mae Hall, Baltimore, Md., and Norma Jean Chidester, Rock Cave; 10 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by one sister, Lovena Lois Beckner and two brothers, Leonard Harold Bender and Hatrzel Claude Bender.

Mrs. Heater was an avid crafter and a member of the Canaan Church.

Friends will be received at Robert M. Vincent Funeral Home, French Creek, from 7-9 p.m. today. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. David Bickel officiating. Burial will follow in the Canaan cemetery.

Charles H. Hyre

Charles H. Hyre, 91, of Stonewood, died at 8:22 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, 1999. He was born March 29, 1908, in Weston, a son of the late Charles E. Hyre and Anna Grace Wetzel Hyre. His first wife, Alma Margaret Lyall Hyre, preceded him in death on May 1, 1971. His second wife, Martha Carin Nicolai Hyre, preceded him in death in March of 1988.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, David D. and Patsy Hyre, Virginia Beach, Va., and Robert Nelson and Karen Hyre, Punta Gorda, Fla.; one daughter and son-in-law, Wandalee and David Lee Tipper, 204 Waverly Way, Clarksburg; two stepsons, Robert Nicolai, Parkersburg, and Michael Nicolai, Huntington; two brothers, Afton Hyre, Wooster, Ohio, and Kemper Hyre, Clarksburg; one sister, Mrs. Cora Oletha Simons, Clarksburg; seven grandchildren, Melinda Lee McClure, Mark, Capt. David and Lt. Rodney Hyre, Rebecca Marcum, Pollyanna Mailhot and Deborah Hyre; 13 great-grandchildren, including locally, Tabitha, Ashley and Brian McClure; five stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Hyre was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. He had worked as service manager for Sid's Furniture, Parkersburg, for over 25 years.

Friends will be received at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St., Clarksburg, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Timothy D. Freed presiding. Interment will be in Brick Church cemetery, Lost Creek.

Josephine F. Loria

SHINNSTON -- Josephine Francis Spenia Loria, 88, of Clarksburg, formerly of Hepzibah, died Thursday, April 1, 1999, in United Hospital Center. She was born March 19, 1911, in Shinnston, a daughter of the late John and Virginia Bartolo Spenia. Her husband, Samuel Loria, preceded her in death in 1979.

Surviving are three daughters, Louise Deavers, Banning, Calif., Virginia Loria, Harrisburg, Pa., and Mary Jo Hudak, Manassas, Va.; one daughter-in-law, Jean Loria, Stonewood; two brothers, Leonard Spenia, Pine Grove, and Anthony Spenia, Summersville; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
She was also preceded in death by one son, Anthony Loria; four sisters, Mary Teano, Janice Aragona, Barbara Abruzzino and Latrina Belcastro and two brothers, James and Frank Spenia.

Mrs. Loria was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Shinnston.

Friends may call at Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston, from 2-9 p.m. today. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Father Karl Wohinc officiating. Burial will follow in the Shinnston Masonic cemetery.

Francis S. Mayer

Francis S. "Soupy" Mayer, 74, of 304 Worley Ave., Clarksburg, died at 2:30 a.m. Thursday, April 1, 1999, at his residence. He was born Sept. 17, 1924, in Salem, a son of the late Jules F. Mayer and Alena Bertoux Mayer.
His wife, Dorothy Brown Mayer, whom he married Nov. 15, 1947, survives.

Also surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Kenneth Garrett, Clarksburg; three sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Debra Mayer, Bill and Mary Mayer and John and Barbi Mayer, all of Clarksburg; one sister, Violet Davis, St. Marys; 13 grandchildren, Staci and Sheli Garrett, Jeff, Scott and Patrick Mayer, Jennifer, Jami, Billy, Matthew and Hunter Mayer and Mookie, J.J. and Mary Kendra Mayer; and two stepgrandsons, Shawn Brown and Michael Davis. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Rose Alkire.

Mr. Mayer was a member of the Broad Oaks United Methodist Church, the Clarksburg Lodge No. 482, BPO Elks, Lodge No. 52, Loyal Order of Moose and Clarksburg Aerie No. 2353, Fraternal Order of Eagles.
He was also a member and former board member of the Belgium American Historical Society and had served on the Board of Directors of the Clarksburg Housing Authority.

He was one of the starters and a coach of the Jerry West Youth Basketball Program in the Clarksburg area and had also coached minor and little league baseball. In addition to being active in various sports, he was an outdoors enthusiast.

Mr. Mayer served as a Democratic Committeeman in Harrison County and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was retired as a glass cutter from PPG Industries and was the owner and operator of the former Soupy's Restaurant.

Friends will be received at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St. Clarksburg, from 7-9 p.m. Saturday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. W. Brent Sturm, O.S.L., conducting the service. Interment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
