John B. Ventura

John Batista Ventura, 75, of 325 Elk Ave., Stonewood, died Monday morning, April 19, 1999, at United Hospital Center.
He was born June 23, 1923, in Stonewood, a son of the late Guiseppi Ventura and Angela Marie Merandi Ventura.
His wife, Teresa Belcastro Ventura, whom he married Aug. 24, 1947, survives.

Also surviving are six sisters, Mrs. Anna Abruzzino and Mrs. John (Mary) Shields, both of Stonewood, Mrs. George (Katherine) Cassel, Grafton, Mrs. John (Antoinette) Brunetti and Mrs. John (Lucille) Caputo, both of Clarksburg, and Mrs. Sam (Rose) Belcastro, Bridgeport; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mr. Ventura was owner and operator of Ventura's Store in Stonewood for many years. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and was wounded while in service for his country. He participated in the second wave of the Normandy Invasion Force and was a recipient of the Purple Heart for gallantry while serving his country in battle.

He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Stonewood.

Friends may call at Bartolo Funeral Home, 515 West Pike Street, Clarksburg, from 1-9 p.m. today. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Wednesday with Father Edward Sabotor as the celebrant. Interment will follow in the Holy Cross cemetery. A Scriptual Wake service will be held at 3 p.m. today at the funeral home chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Norwood School or Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church Fund.

Gertrude V. Wilson

Gertrude V. Wilson, 82, formerly of Washington Avenue, Clarksburg, died Friday, April 16, 1999, in the R.H.D. Memorial Hospital, Farmer's Branch, Texas, following an extended illness. She was born March 15, 1917, in Winchester, Va., a daughter of the late George R. and Mamie Rector Wilkinson.

Surviving are one son, Charles Wilson, Carrollton, Texas; five grandchildren, Devan Shane Wilson, Fairmont, Travis Michael Wilson, Corey Scott Wilson and Ryan Keith Wilson, all of Texas, and Martin E. Cox, Lynchburg, Va.; two brothers, George Wilkinson, Clarksburg, and Emmitt S. Wilkinson, Martinsburg; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Robert Wilkinson.

Mrs. Wilson was retired from the Workingman's Store as a steward clerk. She was a member of the Broad Oaks United Methodist Church.

Friends may call at Davis Funeral Home, 443 W. Pike St., from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with the Rev. Ramona Woods officiating. Interment will be in the Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

Robert Hess

FAIRMONT -- Robert Hess, 69, of Bellview Avenue, died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at his home. He was born July 4, 1929, at Helens Run, a son of the late Albert Ray and Ethel Goldie Furbee Hess Sr. His wife of 50 years, Helen Louise Ashcraft Hess, whom he married April 20, 1949, survives.

Also surviving are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Robert Keith and Aleta Hess, Helens Run, and Michael Ray Hess, Fairmont; two daughters and one son-in-law, Linda R. and Gregory Postlethwait, Durham, N.C., and Pamela D. Ice, Fairmont; four brothers, Albert Hess Jr., Mill Fall, Max Hess, Charles Hess and James Hess, all of Worthington; four sisters, Grace Fisher, Wellborn, Fla., Betty Wright, North Olmstead, Ohio, Jessie Ellison, Fairmont, and Dottie Kropog, Cleveland, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Jeremey Hess, Mitzie Williams and her husband, Scott, Joyce Hess, Amy Hess, Jeffrey Ice, Michael Ice, Brandon Postlethwait, and C.G. Postlethwait; and one great-granddaughter. He was also preceded in death by one brother, John William Hess.
Mr. Hess served in the U.S. Army from 1947-1948. He retired from CSX Railroad in 1989 with 40 years service as a brakeman and a conductor. Among his hobbies were hunting and fishing.

Charles W. Mooney

GRAFTON -- Charles William "Butch" Mooney, 55, of Winder, Ga., formerly of Grafton, died Monday, April 19, 1999, at his residence. He was born Aug. 12, 1943, in Clarksburg, a son of the late Luther Leroy and Ella Mae White Mooney.
His wife, Idabelle Mooney, survives.

Also surviving are two stepsons, Lane Lance, Canton, Ga., and Richard Reeves, Winder; three stepdaughters, Amy Lance, Atlanta, Ga., Cheryl Darby, Murphy, N.C., and Samantha Frerichs, Lawrenceville, Ga.; one sister, Darla Sevier and one brother, George Mooney, both of Grafton; 11 stepgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Mooney was a U.S. Army veteran. He was employed as a glass inspector and cutter.

Brenda K. Perkins

Brenda Kathleen Perkins, 45, of "B" Street, Spelter, died at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at her residence.
She was born Jan. 5, 1954, in Clarksburg, a daughter of Ellis Vincent, Bridgeport, and Mary Golden Lodge, Raleigh, N.C.
Her husband, Victor Guy Perkins, whom she married May 10, 1975, survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Danette Lynn Perkins, at home; her stepmother, Peggy Vincent, one brother and sister-in-law, Ellis J. Jr. and Lisa Vincent, all of Bridgeport; two sisters, Deborah Simmons, Medina, Ohio, and Mrs. William (Mary Beth) Hamilton, Richmond, Va.; one stepsister, Peggy Jo Yates and husband, Stanley, Wolf Summit. She was also preceded in death by one half brother, Robbie Lodge.

Mrs. Perkins was a homemaker.

Friends will be received at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St., Clarksburg, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday. The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Bridgeport cemetery.

Linda D. Postle

FAIRMONT -- Linda D. Postle, 44, of Wallace, died Monday, April 19, 1999, in the home of her sister in Fairmont.
She was born April 15, 1955, in Wheeling, a daughter of Mary Martha Foster Arbogast, Ohio, and the late Lonnie Arden Arbogast. Her husband of 28 years, Ronald E. Postle, survives.

Also surviving are two sons and one daughter-in-law, William A. Postle, Ohio, and Mark E. and Melissa Postle, Georgia; four brothers and two sisters-in-law, Andrew Arbogast, David and Sandra Arbogast and Lonnie Arbogast, all of Ohio, and Michael and Susan Arbogast, Fairmont; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Connie and Lewis Postle, Ohio, Sharon and Milton "Moe" Cottingham, and Kathryn and Earl Pyles, with whom she was living, all of Fairmont, Carol and Tommy Welch, Texas, and Kelly and Rodney Brown, Ohio; two grandchildren, Tyler and Kayla Postle; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Postle was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, Stonewood, in which she was active in both prayer ministry and the Bible study group. She was a clerk in the business office at Fairmont State College.

She was a volunteer with The United Way and the Walk For Life Program. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

Sherman G. Prince

JANE LEW -- Sherman Glen Prince, 73, of McWhorter, died at 1:32 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 1999, in United Hospital Center. He was born Feb. 6, 1926, at McWhorter, a son of the late Lester Prince and Mamie Teter Prince. His wife, the former Connie Simmons, whom he married Nov. 4, 1983, at Bridgeport, survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Christopher Prince, Bradley Prince and wife Roberta, all of Phoenix, Ariz; one daughter, Glenda Prince Ericson and husband Jon, San Juan Capistrano, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. Carolyn Headly Berwyn of Pennsylvania, Mrs. Thurl (Shirley) Lewis, Alexandria, Va.; Mrs. Genevieve Grimmett, Clarksburg; several grandchildren; stepgrandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Michael Lester and David Mark Prince; one sister, Norma Rhoades.
Mr. Prince was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Navy as a member of an underwater demolition team. He was retired manager from the U.S. West Telephone Co. He had lived in Phoenix for 25 years and was a member of the McWhorter United Methodist Church.

William R. Propst

BELINGTON -- Mr. William Russell Propst, 91, a resident of Route 1, Chestnut Flats community, died at 10:05 p.m. Monday, April 19, 1999, in the Broaddus Hospital, Philippi. He was born Oct. 4, 1907, in Whitmer, a son of the late Robert William and Abagail Rexrode Propst. His wife, Ethel Blanche Simmons Propst, whom he married in 1936, preceded him in death.

Surviving are one nephew, Arlie Simmons, Chestnut Flats community, with whom he made his home with; several foster children; one brother, Grant Propst, Franklin; four sisters, Shirley Propst, Audra Propst and Bonnie Moyers, all of Franklin, and Beulah Bodkins, McDowell.

Mr. Propst attended the schools of Moyers and was Protestant. He was a retired farmer and lumberman.

Mary L. Schmidt

OAK HILL -- Mrs. Mary Louise Spring Schmidt, 51, of Oak Hill, died Monday, April 19, 1999, at CAMC General Division, Charleston, following a short illness. She was born Oct. 6, 1947, in Baltimore, Md., a daughter of the late Luther Wilson Spring and Mary Catherine Griffin Spring Lang. Her husband, John Ancil Schmidt, survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Sara Catherine Schmidt, a student at West Virginia University; three brothers, Denis Spring, Robert Spring and Mark Spring, all of Morgantown; and one sister, Catherine Waugh, Berkeley Springs.

Mrs. Schmidt was a WVU extension agent for Consumer Sciences in Fayette and Nicholas counties.

She was an active member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Oak Hill, WVU Faculty Senate, Fayette County Chairman WVU Parents Club, Epsilom Sigma Phi, American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, Extension Association of West Virginia and several quilt guilds.

Robert C. Anderson

WEST UNION -- Robert C. "Tip" Anderson, 87, of Shirley, Tyler County, died at 9:40 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, following a brief illness. He was born Dec. 24, 1911, in Elk Lick, Doddridge County, a son of the late Robert G. and Ollie M. Swiger Anderson. His wife, Lexie G. Gaines Anderson, whom he married March 2, 1932, survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Violet Lancaster, Colliers, and Olive Anderson, Ashley; three sons, Robert E. Anderson, West Union, Leslie C. Anderson and Charles E. Anderson, both of Shirley; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having also been preceded in death by one son, Lewis Ray Anderson, one daughter, Esther Marie Vandruff, three brothers, Milton Anderson, Marshall Anderson and John Anderson, four sisters, Beulah Swiger, Ida Murphy, Gurtie Parker and Ethel Cain and one granddaughter, Debbie Pratt.

Mr. Anderson had retired in 1978 with over 50 years of service as a well tender and supervisor with the Dilmur Oil Co. of Pennsylvania, formerly the Murphy Oil Co.

He was a former member of the Shirley Grange, and an avid hunter. He was Protestant.

Nettie A. Byrd

SHINNSTON -- Nettie Ann Byrd, 82, of Lumberport, formerly of the Haywood community, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, following an extended illness at the residence of a daughter with whom she resided. She was born Feb. 27, 1917, in Cascade, Preston County, a daughter of the late Torb and Sarah L. Shaffer Eavenson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Owen Byrd, on Aug. 17, 1993.

Surviving are two daughters, Irene Bonnell, Lumberport, and Ellen Stout, at whose home she died, Lumberport; two sons, Blaine Byrd, Sedalia, and Leonard Byrd, Wheeling; 19 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren; and one half brother, Chester Shaffer, Morgantown. She was also preceded in death by five brothers, three sisters and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Byrd attended the former Haywood United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Haywood Homemakers Club for over 30 years.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Harmer Funeral Home in Shinnston. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Austin Burrough officiating. Interment will follow in the Shinnston Masonic cemetery.

Clarence E. Hunter

PARKERSBURG -- Clarence E. Hunter, 83, of Liberty Street, died at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, 1999. He was born in Parkersburg, a son of the late Earl Hunter and Bernice Montgomery. His wife of 61 years, Margaret E. Hunter, survives.

Also surviving are three children, Gloria Ann Kennedy, Salem, Ore., James Foster Hunter, California, and Carol Sue Tokai, Knoxville, Tenn.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hunter moved to Clarksburg in the early 1930s and worked at the Grand Theater for 22 years in various capacities, including chief projectionist, stage manager and emcee.

He was also employed in the Los Angeles area from 1952 through 1970 at Hughes Aircraft-Ground Systems Division, North American Aircraft-Autonetics Division, Altec-Lansing, and other manufacturing concerns.

He worked in television and radio broadcasting at WBLK, WTAP, and WMOA locally, as well as KCOY and the San Diego Community College District in California. He was a holder of a first class FCC radiotelephone operator's license and a California teaching credential in telecommunications and associated technologies.

Mr. Hunter was well known for maintaining and repairing pipe organs, a trade followed since the late 1930s. At one time he worked with 33 area churches and four pipe organs at West Virginia Wesleyan College. He had been a resident of Parkersburg since 1981.
