Paul L. Anderson

BELINGTON -- Paul Lester Anderson, 74, of Junior, died at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, 1999, in the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center, Clarksburg, following a three-year battle with cancer.

He was born May 15, 1924, in Hacker Valley, Webster County, a son of the late Ira and Opal Hammonds Anderson.
On Jan. 13, 1947, he married the former Martha Lou Rider, who survives.

Also surviving are four daughters, Paula Poling and husband, Dave, Westminster, Md., Donna Schindele and George McConnell, Pasadena, Md., Tammy Freeman and husband, Joel, and Debbie Hicks and husband, Raymond, all of Junior; one sister, Bernice and Cecil Jones, Elkins; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Anderson was a World War II veteran, serving with the 287th Field Artillery in the Philippines. He was retired as an automotive mechanic for Montgomery Ward and as a driver for Kelly Trucking.

He was a member of the Weaver Church of the Nazarene and the National Rifle Association. He was an avid hunter.

Terrance Bonnell

BRIDGEPORT -- Terrance Bonnell, 40, of Shanlen Drive, Columbus, Ohio, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, in Columbus.
He was born May 2, 1958, in Clarksburg, a son of Sarah Callahan Bonnell and the late Argyle D. Bonnell.

Also surviving are one brother, Jeffery Bonnell, two sisters, Ms. Danita Ringler and Mrs. Robert (Salli) Terneus, all of Bridgeport; two nephews, two nieces and one great-nephew.

Mr. Bonnell was a member of All Saints Catholic Church and a graduate of Notre Dame High School, class of 1976.
He was employed as a maintenance supervisor by Penicole Realty, Columbus.

Friends may call at Allen Funeral Home, Bridgeport, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at All Saints Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Harry N. Cramer as celebrant. The vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Bridgeport cemetery.

Estel D. Davis

PHILIPPI -- Estel Diana Davis, 79, of Route 1, Moatsville, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, in the Broaddus Hospital Emergency Room following a sudden and unexpected illness.

She was born March 2, 1920, at Wainville, Webster County, a daughter of the late Allen Kessler Greene and Mintie Catherine Barker Greene. Her husband, Clyde F. Davis, whom she married Nov. 30, 1936, preceded her in death on April 27, 1984.

Surviving are two sons, Charles Leroy Davis, Carlos, Ohio, and Donald Ray Davis, Runa; seven daughters, Mrs. Oley W. (Lorena) Teter, Gassaway, Mrs. James D. (Karen) Freeman and Mrs. Vernon (Brenda) Sammons, Jr., both of Akron, Ohio, Mrs. Ira Duane (Reta Jean) Freeman, Mrs. Gary R. (Wanda) Freeman and Mrs. Gregory L. (Carolyn) Nestor, all of Route 1, Moatsville, Mrs. (Catherine) Marsh, Route 3, Philippi; one brother, Harry Greene, Florida; one sister, Glenna Murl Bauzon, Florida; one nephew, Roger Lee Nichols, Bardwell, Ky.; 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Herbert Franklin Davis, two sons-in-law, Karl Edward Duckworth and James D. Freeman, five sisters and one brother.

Mrs. Davis was a homemaker and Methodist.

June Harless

GILBERT -- June Montgomery Harless, wife of well-known southern West Virginia businessman and philanthropist, James H. "Buck¨ Harless of Gilbert, passed away on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at their home in Gilbert following a long illness.

Mrs. Harless was born June Montgomery in Holden, on July 16, 1920, the daughter of Joe and Emma Hall Montgomery. Her three brothers, Earl, Jack and Carl, and her one sister, Opal, all preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her son, Larry Joe Harless.

She is survived by her husband, James H. "Buck¨ Harless and her daughter, Judith Ann Burgess of Murfreesboro, Tenn. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Beverly Burgess of Bell Buckle, Tenn., Stephanie Burgess, James H. Harless II and his wife, Sjon Harless and Maurice "M.K.¨ Harless and his wife, Sharon, all of Mobile, Ala.
Survivors also include four great-grandchildren, James H. "Tripp¨ Harless III, Hope Archer Harless, Chelsea Harless and Kitty Harless, all of Mobile.

Mrs. Harless was a member of the Gilbert Presbyterian Church and was the past Moderator of the Women of the Church. She was a graduate of Gilbert High School, a member of the Class of 1938.

A key part of the success of Mr. Harless' companies, which ultimately became today's International Industries, Inc., Mrs. Harless managed the fiscal side of the early Gilbert Lumber Company. As the companies grew, Mrs. Harless resumed her primary role as homemaker. She was an avid bird-watcher. She also involved herself in identifying Appalachian wildflowers.

In February, Mr. and Mrs. Harless celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a large celebration at The Greenbrier attended by over 200 family members and friends.

During the last three years, Mrs. Harless was one of the primary forces behind the creation of the Larry Joe Harless Community Center. She always remembered that her son had believed that Gilbert needed a place where children could play in a structured, motivating environment and adults could come together in community activities. She helped make this vision a reality.

Ironically, the Center was to have its ribbon-cutting ceremonies on Saturday, May 1. Due to her death, these ceremonies have been postponed.

The visitation for Mrs. Harless will be on Thursday, April 29, from 6-9 p.m. at Gilbert Presbyterian Church. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. at Gilbert Presbyterian Church with the burial following at the Harless Family cemetery on Betty Island in Gilbert.

Rev. Don Chichester of Roanoke, Va., assisted by the Rev. Tom Schuler of Williamson, will perform the ceremony.
The pallbearers will be Bruce Burgess, Freddy Harless, Eddie Grimmett, Curtis Lester, Jimmy Harless, and Roger Blankenship.

Honorary pallbearers are Gov. Cecil H. Underwood, C. Fred Shewey, Kenny Hatfield, Dr. Harry Fortner, Randy Cline and Gary White. Mounts Funeral Home of Gilbert is handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish to show their respect are asked to send contributions to the Larry Joe Harless Community Center Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 1210, Gilbert, WV 25621. For more information, call Ms. Sharon Murphy at 664-3227.

Ernest L. Isch

Ernest L. Isch, 81, a resident of Pickens, died Tuesday afternoon, April 27, 1999, in the Barbour County Good Samaritan Center, Belington. He had been in failing health since 1990 and a resident of the center since August of 1998.

He was born April 13, 1918, in Pickens, a son of the late Ernest Daniel and Ella House Isch. On July 27, 1940, he was married to the former Margaret Egleson, who survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Elaine Louise Isch, Pickens; two brothers, Johns Isch, Toledo, Ohio, and Paul Isch, Elkins; four sisters, June McCourt, Toledo, Beulah Bartlett, Montrose, Eula Myers, Rock Hill, S.C., and Jessie Ferguson, Proctorville, Ohio; several nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Mr. Isch attended the schools of Randolph County and was a graduate of Pickens High School with the class of 1936.
He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Pacific Theatre from 1942-1945 and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

He was employed as a heavy equipment operator, worked as a maintenance technician in the coal industry and was a farmer. Following his retirement in 1970, he traveled considerably with his family.

Mr. Isch was a member of the Zion Presbyterian Church at Helvetia, where he served as a deacon and an elder.

Velma M. Palmer

PENNSBORO -- Velma Marie Palmer, 78, of Hickory, N.C., died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at Hickory.
She was born Aug. 19, 1920, in Washburn, Ritchie County, a daughter of the late Everett and Lydia Helen Douglas Sayre.
Her husband, Robert E. Palmer, survives.

Also surviving are one son, Robert E. Palmer II, Wittenburg, N.C.; four daughters, Donna M. Totter, Meridian, Miss., Mendy Jo Lemasters, Dayton, Texas, Ellen S. Hoban, Fairmont, and Cheryl A. Lemasters, Dayton; one brother, Francis D. Sayre, West Union; four sisters, Joppa L. Prunty, Parkersburg, Mary Nichols, Greenwood, Rita Simonette, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Nancy Dotson, West Union; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

Mrs. Palmer was a homemaker.

Earl S. Reed

PENNSBORO -- Earl S. Reed, 52, of Friendly, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, in Friendly. He was born Aug. 28, 1946, in Pennsboro, a son of the late Otis and Ethel Mitchell Reed. Surviving are one son, Chris Reed, Parkersburg, and one daughter, Tabitha Reed, St. Marys.

Mr. Reed was a member of the Painters Local Union No. 1144 of Parkersburg. He was employed by Brown Excavating Company.

Betty L. Sandy

Betty Lou Jenkins Sandy, 73, of Horner Street, Lumberport, died Monday, April 26, 1999, in United Hospital Center following an extended illness.

She was born April 5, 1926, in Taylor County, Astor community, a daughter of the late Herbert Jenkins and Hazel Jenkins McCutcheon. Her husband, Walter O. Sandy, preceded her in death in November of 1987.

Surviving are her companion, Charles W. Griffith; one daughter, Mrs. Carl "Eddie¨ (Sandra) Buckhannon Springer, Bridgeport; one son, Walter William Buckhannon, Lumberport; four grandsons, Eddie and Chucky Springer, both of Bridgeport, and Justin and Brandon Buckhannon, North Carolina; one great-granddaughter, Mikayla Springer Bridgeport; one stepdaughter, Mr. and Mrs. Jim (Carol) Dukate, Doddridge County; two stepgrandsons, Johnpaul and David Dukate; three brothers, Paul Jenkins, Wolf Summit, William R. Jenkins, Wadestown, and Kenneth Jenkins, Clarksburg; three sisters, Judy Ware, Clarksburg, Wilma Stout, Bridgeport, and Shirley Simino, Fairmont; several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her stepfather, Charles McCutcheon, one daughter, Bernice Mae Buckhannon, two sisters and one brother.

Mrs. Sandy was a member of the Musicians Union and was Methodist. She was an avid country musician and singer for 45 years, having played in country bands at the Radio Ranch and Snider's Drive-In.

A funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. today at Davis Funeral Home, 443, W. Pike St., with the Rev. Gail Carson officiating. Interment will be in the Sardis cemetery.

Retta Scott

Retta Scott, 85, of Clarksburg, died Monday, April 26, 1999, in a local nursing home following an extended illness.
She was born April 16, 1914, in Madison, a son of the late James E. and Orpha Ferrell Price.

Surviving are one son, James T. Miller, Charleston; one grandson, Mark Miller, Pittsburgh; two great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, one sister and two half brothers.

Mrs. Scott was a school teacher, having retired from Pinellas County, Fla., and taught in Boone County for 42 years.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Honorary and the Bridgeport United Methodist Church.

A service of remembrance will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Bridgeport United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dale Waters officiating. Davis Funeral Home.

Stella M. Sturm

BUCKHANNON -- Stella M. Sturm, 99, of 11 Morgan Addition, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999, at St. Joseph's Extended Care Facility.

She was born Sept. 3, 1899, in Hemlock, a daughter of the late Edgar Carpenter and Susan Zickefoose Carpenter.
Her husband, Rev. Lester B. Sturm, whom she married Aug. 17, 1924, survives.

Also surviving are one son, Charles B. Sturm, Morgantown, five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Carl E. Sturm, two brothers, Simon Carpenter and Jesse Carpenter and one great-grandson, Robert Sturm.

Mrs. Sturm was a retired school teacher. She was a member of the Mt. Herman United Methodist Church.
