Goldie M. Robinson

SHINNSTON -- Goldie M. Carson Robinson, 98, of Wallace, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999.
She was born Jan. 31, 1901, in Rinehart, a daughter of the late W.E. and Celia King Carson.
Her husband, Halley Newton Robinson, preceded her in death on April 12, 1942.
Surviving are one son, Dr. William T. Robinson, Woodland, Calif.; one sister, Ruth Wetzel, Arnold, Pa.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Okey Carson.

Mrs. Robinson was a member of the Wallace United Methodist Church and a member and former president of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Wallace Senior Citizens and was Senior Citizen of the Year in 1968.
She was also involved in the Extension Homemakers Club and the Fire Department Auxiliary, both of Wallace, and the YWCA and Eastern Star, Clarksburg.

Friends may call at Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston, from 2-9 p.m. Wednesday. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will follow in the Lions Club cemetery, Wallace.

Bertha M. Self

FLATWOODS -- Bertha M. Self, 89, of Exchange, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, in West Virginia University Medical Center, Morgantown, following a brief illness.
She was born June 12, 1909, in Bonnie, a daughter of the late Uriah Newton Singleton and Lillie Virginia Ratliff Singleton.Her husband, Arley Byrne Self, preceded her in death on Nov. 8, 1991.
Surviving are one daughter, Sue Loyd, Exchange; one son, Junior Self, Flatwoods; three sisters, Dae Luzader, Newville, Minnie "Dick¨ Singleton, Exchange, and Elva Smyth, Conroe, Texas; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Mamie VanHorn; four sisters, Patsy Singleton, Lea Hacker, Lina Hacker and Mamie Ward; one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter.
Mrs. Self was a homemaker and a member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church.

Harold J. Shahan

BETHESDA, Md. -- Harold Jennings Shahan of Bethesda, formerly of Clarksburg, W.Va. and Salem, W.Va., died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, at his home.His wife of 63 years, Anna P. Shahan, whom he married in June of 1935, survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Michael, Glenside, Pa., and John, Cary, N.C.; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Shahan was a retired General Accounting Office chief. He was a native of West Virginia and had lived in Bethesda for 60 years.

In 1934 he received a bachelor of arts degree with a music major from Salem College. Upon graduation, he moved to Washington, D.C. and was employed by the Smokeless Coal Code Authority. That same year he entered the U.S. Civil Service as an assembly clerk in the General Accounting Office.

In 1944 he was called to military service in the Army. For two years he served in the European Theater, including the Battle of the Bulge. After the war in 1946, he returned to the GAO as an auditor of War Contracts. He soon transferred to the position of claims examiner in the Claims Division.

After 42 years of service, he retired in 1977, having served as chief of the Payment Claims Branch for the last six years of his tenure. He was a member of GAO Post 48 of The American Legion.
He sang for 25 years at the Bethesda Presbyterian Church in the church choir.

For over 30 years the Shahans opened their home to students, both foreign and American, providing an extended family for them.

Oran L. Singleton

FARMINGTON -- Oran L. "Bud¨ Singleton, 71, of South Farmington, died Monday, Feb. 15, 1999, at Fairmont General Hospital. He was born Sept. 5, 1927, in Weston, a son of the late Ralph and Eva Messenger Singleton.
His wife of more than 47 years, Geneva Dean Singleton, survives.

Also surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Shawn Rinehart, Plum Run, near Mannington, and Karen and Richard Waddell, Farmington; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Rebecca Singleton, Farmington; five brothers, Fredric Donald Singleton, David Lee Singleton, Arthur Linn Singleton, Charles William Singleton and Richard Curtiss Singleton; one sister, Agnes Mae Wilfong, Mechanicsburg, Pa.; a special aunt, Agnes Twyman, Criss Manor, Weston; 10 grandchildren, Richard and Erin Waddell Jr., Rodney and Rhonda Messenger, Chad and Tammy Valentine, Justin Waddell, Miranda Vance, Shawna Rinehart, and Eric Waddell and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Singleton was a member of the West Farmington United Methodist Church, a past member of the International Order of Odd Fellows Lodge and the Lions Club, both of Farmington, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Mannington and Weston.

He had 12 years of schooling in the Jane Lew school system and had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He had retired from the Equitable Gas Co. in Clarksburg in 1990 with 33 years of service.

Bobby W. Swiger

Bobby Wayne Swiger, 51, of Second Avenue, Parkersburg, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, in Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital, Parkersburg, following an extended illness.
He was born May 7, 1947, in Harrison County, a son of Gladys America Swiger, Reynoldsville, and the late Alfred B. Swiger.

His wife, Ethel Mae Bunnell Swiger, whom he married May 18, 1971, survives.
Also surviving are two daughters, Mary Ann Swiger, at home, and Misty Shamblin, Parkersburg; one stepson, Kenneth Bunnell, Parkersburg; five grandchildren; three brothers, Alfred Lee Swiger, Bristol, Charles Swiger, Reynoldsville, and Lonnie Swiger, Jupiter, Fla.; two sisters, Linda Endress, Geneva, Ohio, and Teresa Swiger, Parkersburg; 12 nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, Terry Swiger. Mr. Swiger was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in Vietnam. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Marshville cemetery with the Rev. Dewain Herrod officiating.

Richard L. Tinnell

BRUCETON MILLS -- Richard Lee Tinnell, 70, of Bruceton Mills, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, in Monongalia General Hospital. He was born Jan. 23, 1929, in Fairmont, a son of the late Marvin Ernest and Opal Irene Orr Tinnell Sr.
His wife, Margaret L. "Maggie¨ Fryman Tinnell, survives.

Also surviving are two sons, James B. Tinnell, Boulder, Colo., and Gary Lee Tinnell, Dayton, Ohio; one daughter, Darlene T. Walsh, one stepdaughter, Janet L. Warner, and one granddaughter, Joy Walsh, all of Dayton; one brother, Robert O. Tinnell, Fairmont; one paternal aunt, Mrs. Ethel Smith, Hazelton; and five nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by one brother, Marvin E. Tinnell Jr.

Mr. Tinnell was Protestant. He was an Army veteran, serving in the Korean Conflict. He was retired from the Chrysler Corporation with over 30 years of service.

He was a member of the Morgantown Union Lodge No. 4, Morgantown Valley of Scottish Rite and was a 32nd degree of Wheeling Consistory. He was a member of Royal Arch Chapter No. 30, Morgantown Commandry No. 18, Osiris Temple, the Morgantown Shrine Club, Fairmont Shrine Club and Mountaineer Patrol. He was also a member of Fort Henry York Rite College and the Knight Masons.

Gerald D. Barr

Gerald D. Barr, 65, of Anmoore, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, in the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center following an extended illness.
He was born Sept. 2, 1933, in Tucson, Ariz., a son of the late Robert Barr and Evelyn Dale Barr.
His wife, Nancy Scott Barr, survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Gerald Barr and Stephen Barr, both of Cleveland, Ohio; four daughters, Kathy Seeki, Mary Roush, Lisa Rein and Maureen Beno, all of Cleveland; one stepdaughter, Theresa Baker, Philadelphia, Pa.; two stepsons, Jeffrey Nichols, Plano, Texas, and Duncan Nichols, Virginia Beach, Va.; four brothers, Larry Barr and Frank Barr, both of Tucson, Ariz., Robert Barr, San Ramon, Calif., Ted Barr, Compton, Calif.; 20 grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one sister.
Mr. Barr was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Stonewood. He was a service manager for Pressley Ridge of Northern West Virginia before moving to Cleveland, where he was a residence manager. He also served in the Navy during the Korean War.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today at Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St. in Clarksburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Edward Sabo, T.O.R. as celebrant. His body will be cremated and the cremains interred in the West Virginia National cemetery at the convenience of the family. A prayer service will be held at 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Paul G. Bishop

ARNOLDSBURG -- Paul G. Bishop, 82, of Sand Fork, Gilmer County, died Sunday morning, Feb. 7, 1999, at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Weston.
He was born in Rosedale, Braxton County, a son of the late Lewis and Ursala Dobbins Bishop.
His wife, Gathel King Bishop, survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Arden Bishop, Warren, Ohio, and David Bishop, Sand Fork; three daughters, Ruth James, Sand Fork, Ermal Harris, Katy, Texas, and Mary Gumm, New Fairfield, Conn.; three brothers, Lester, Chester and Edward Bishop, all of Sutton; two sisters, Gae Lane, Spokane, Wash., and Hazel Brown, Wheeling; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Carl Bishop and Victor Bishop; and three sisters, Freda McDonald, Mary Ellen Bishop and Gertrude Bishop.
Mr. Bishop was a self-employed timberman and saw mill operator.

Donald H. Brown

WESTON -- Donald Hall Brown, 71, of 365 Mid Ave., died at 8:35 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, in the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Weston, following an extended illness.
He was born Oct. 15, 1927, in Glenville, a son of the late Claudius Ray Brown and Rebecca Settle Brown.
Surviving are five sisters, Annetta Ruth Sims, Burldeane Stein, Aretta Grace McHenry and Edna Muriel Brown, all of Weston, and Marjorie Kathleen Foster, Buckhannon; one brother, Luther Wright, Akron, Ohio; several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Mr. Brown was retired from the Kent Machine Co. in Stow, Ohio. He was Protestant.
Friends will be received from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Floyd Funeral Home, 402 Main Ave. in Weston. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Ron George Jr. and the Rev. Ron C. Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Mae E. Donaldson

WESTON -- Mae E. Donaldson, 87, of Route 2, Homewood community, died at 6:10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 1999, at St. Joseph's Hospital, Buckhannon, following an extended illness.
She was born May 1, 1911, in Bear Run, a daughter of the late Martin L. Riffle and Adeline Skinner Riffle.
On July 18, 1934, she married Michael E. Donaldson, who preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 1959.
Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and JoAnn Donaldson, and William "Tub" and Mary Donaldson, all of Weston, and Leonard and Delane Donaldson, Cumberland, Md.; one daughter, Ruby Ables, Weston; one stepdaughter, Gracie Taylor, Roanoke; one stepson, Junior Donaldson, Oakwood, Ohio; 40 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two sons, Aubrey and Dana Donaldson; two stepsons, Martin and Francis Donaldson; two stepdaughters, Mae Ables and Delcie Garrett; two brothers, Otto and Ova Riffle; two sisters, Mary Donaldson and Vadie Heater; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Donaldson was a homemaker and attended the Broad Street United Methodist Church.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at the Boyle Funeral Home, 322 Main Ave. in Weston. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Clifford West, assisted by the Rev. Clyde Crites, officiating. Interment will follow in the Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
