Lewis Franklin Gothard

Lewis Franklin Gothard, 75 of Barboursville, passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at his residence. He was born August 9, 1929, in Barboursville, a son of the late Eura Stanley and Rosa Pearl Wallace Gothard. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean Conflict and retired from the U.S. Postal Service and the West Virginia Army National Guard. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Gothard; one sister, Leona Stewart and one brother, Lyle Gothard. He is survived by two daughters, Paula Sadler of Swansea, Mass., and Carole Lowney of Dighton, Mass.; one son, Lewis Gothard, Jr., of Swansea, Mass.; two sisters, Lenora Linville and Elene Spurlock both of Barboursville; two stepchildren, Renata Warden and Deborah Krook; and two grandchildren. There was no visitation or funeral service. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Audrey V. Gibson

Audrey V. Gibson, 79, of Milton, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 25, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, April 28, 2005, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Bill Spears and the Rev. Kim Stone officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. She was born March 25, 1926, a daughter of the late Harold Ray and Genive Davis Reynolds. She was also preceded in death by her husband, T.U. “Tuck” Gibson; one brother Jack Reynolds and one sister, Avis Beaty. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, C.H. “Bud” and Shirley Gibson and Nelson and Donna Gibson, both of Milton; one stepson, Dallas Gibson and his wife, Arvina, also of Milton; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two step-grandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

James William Moulton

James William Moulton, 89, of Huntington, husband of Nellie Marie Hamilton Moulton, died Friday, April 22, 2005 in Sentara Leigh Hospital, Norfolk, Va: He was a retired plant superintendent for H.K. Porter/Connor Steel. Also surviving are two daughters, Jeanne Moulton Bennett and Joe Ellen Moulton Watson, both of Virginia Beach, Va. Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 29, 2005 at Henson Mortuary, Pea Ridge Road, Huntington; burial in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington.

James E. Daniels, 56, of Poca died July 25, 2005, at home.

He was retired from the U.S. Army and a database administrator for the U.S. Government in the State of Virginia. He enjoyed playing bingo at the VFW in Teays Valley.

Surviving: wife, Alice L. Daniels; children, Heather Gabor of St. Lake City, Utah, Sarah Gabor, Melissa King and husband, Sam, of Elkview, and Jonathan Bradley and companion, Cynthia Lloyd, of Sarasota, Florida; sister, Pam Fisher of Cleveland, Ohio; grandchildren, Gavin Gabor, Alexia Gabor, Taylor Racer and Lucas King.

Service was held Friday, July 29, 2005, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, with Dr. Todd Raynes officiating.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 301 RHL Blvd., South Charleston WV 25309.

Denise Ann Bailes

Denise Ann Olive Bailes, 42, of Poca died July 29, 2005, in Thomas Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

Surviving: husband, Roy Dale Bailes; daughter, Amanda Bailes of Poca; son, Joseph Bailes of Poca; mother, Carolyn Olive of Elkview; father, Rex Olive of Elkview; brother, Rex Allen Olive Jr. of Elkview; sisters, Meika Shawn Anglin of Cherry Valley, California, Anita Dawn Carey of Banning, California, and Melissa Lynn Young of Elkview.

Service was held Monday, August 1, 2005, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, with Paul Arthur officiating. Burial was in Center Point Cemetery.

Thelma Jeanne Yost

Thelma Jeanne Yost, 71, of Hurricane died July 27, 2005, at Putnam General Hospital due to complications from cancer.

Born September 16, 1933 in South Charleston, she was a daughter of the late Roscoe and Penny Brown Webb. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Richard Webb.

She was a former secretary in the Governor's Office during both terms of the Moore administration and had also been employed by Columbia Gas, Padgett and Laberta Salamacha.

Surviving: husband, Norman L. Yost; children, Annie Yost, currently pursuing a nursing degree at the University of Charleston, Debbie Lilly of Cross Lanes, Lowell Bird of Purgitsville, Hampshire County, and Stephanie Holz of Durham, North Carolina; brother, Roscoe Webb of Michigan; several grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Friday, July 29, 2005, at Chapman Funeral Home, Teays Valley.

Beulah J. Bailey

Beulah J. “Juanita” Bailey, 81, of Kerr, Ohio, formerly of Poca and Leon, died July 27, 2005, in Pleasant Valley Hospital.

She was preceded in death by son, Otis Eugene Bailey.

Surviving: husband, Otis T. Bailey; sister, Helena Milam of Midway.

Service was held Saturday, July 30, 2005, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Delbert Hawley officiating. Burial was in Ortin Heights Cemetery.

Denver O. Clendenin

Denver Oden Clendenin, 81, of Red House died Wednesday, July 27, 2005, at home following a long illness.

Born April 4, 1924 in Putnam County, he was the son of the late Herb and Minnie Clendenin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Mamie Witt and Mildred Fisher.

He was a member of Red House Independent Church, a retired machinist from the Union Carbide Institute Plant with 31 years of service, and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving: his wife of 59 years, Delores O. Harrison Clendenin; daughter and her husband, Connie and Larry Copeman of Bradenton, Florida; sisters and a brother-in-law, Maurine French of Buffalo, Marguerite Harrison of Eleanor, Mavis and Bob Kelly of Winfield; brother and his wife, Dewayne and Betty Clendenin of Ripley; granddaughters, Tiffany and Kimberly Copeman, both of Bradenton.

Service was held Saturday, July 30, 2005, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Greg Blake and Pastor Robert Kelly officiating. Burial was in Emma Chapel Cemetery, Liberty.

Macel M. Garrison

Macel Margarette Garrison, 93, of Estancia, New Mexico, died Tuesday, July 26, 2005.

She was born May 20, 1912 in Putnam County, a daughter of the late John Wesley and Gertrude Newell Garrison.

She worked as a cafeteria worker for Kirkland Air Force Base before retiring.

Surviving: sister, Agatha Garrison of Estancia; numerous nieces and nephews.

Service was held Monday, August 1, 2005, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, with Carl “Mick” Bailes officiating. Burial was in Otterbein Cemetery, Evans.

James A. McLaughlin

James A. McLaughlin, 85, of Hurricane died July 27, 2005, in Putnam General Hospital.

He was a retired from the Marine Corps with 31 years of service, a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He served as chaplain for Thomas Memorial Hospital and Putnam General Hospital and pastored many churches in Georgia, North Carolina and West Virginia. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Hurricane, and the Masonic Lodge, Hurricane. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a Shriner and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies.

Surviving: his wife of 61 years, Charlotte McLaughlin; daughters, Connie Brown of Michigan and nancy Humphrey of North Carolina; brother Cecil McLaughlin of North Carolina; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.

Service was held Sunday, July 31, 2005, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, with Jim McGehee officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

James O. “Big Jim” “Chuck” Plybon

James O. “Big Jim” “Chuck” Plybon, 83, of Barboursville, husband of Barbara Dunkle Plybon, passed away Thursday, July 28, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, July 30, 2005, at Chapman's Mortuary with Pastor Leo Gibson and Pastor Kim Stone officiating. Burial in Bowen Cemetery. He was born April 29, 1922, in Bowen W.Va., a son of the late James and Era Adkins Plybon. Also preceding him in death were two sisters, Edith Childers and Shirley Berry; two brothers, Cleo and Herbert Plybon; his first wife, Marjorie Bassett Plybon, and a son-in-law, Mark LaFontaine. Mr. Plybon graduated from Wayne High School, and attended Marshall College, where he played on the football team. He was a salesman for Gold-Kist Poultry and Braun Meat Company, and in later years served as Sheriff of Wayne County. He was also an auctioneer in West Virginia and Kentucky. He attended Buffalo Valley Baptist Church, was a very active member of the Wayne County Coon Hunters Club. He was a member of Buena Vista Lodge #60, White s Creek, W.Va., whose members will conduct Masonic Graveside Rites, and was a member of Mohawk Lodge #11. Additional survivors include one daughter, Shirley LaFontaine of Crescent City, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Carole Plybon of Kenova; one granddaughter, Kelsey Elizabeth Plybon also of Kenova; one sister, Sylvia Chapman of Barboursville and a very special adopted daughter, Judy Brown of Barboursville. Honorary pallbearers were John Murphy and George Daniel Clark. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Buffalo Valley Baptist Missionary Fund, 872 Buffalo Creek Road, Huntington WV 25704, or The Gideons Foundation.

Hazel B. Watts

Hazel B. Watts, 90, of Barboursville, died July 29, 2005, in Wyngate Senior Living. She was born June 5, 1915, in Rock, W.Va., to the late Lunsford Bertie and Rosa Belle Alice Bailey. In addition to her parents her husband Hobart Watts, brother Morris Bailey and sister Evelyn Atkins, preceded her in death. She was a former employee of Allied Chemical and was a retired administrative assistant with the Fairfield School. She was a former secretary of Highlawn Baptist Church and a member of the Women's Club of Cox's Landing. She is survived by her stepdaughter Anna Jean (Charles) Drown of Huntington, stepson Sonny (Mary Alin) Watts of Gulf Breeze, Fla., sister Opal Jordan of Huntington; step-grandchildren Brit Watts, Chris Drown, Cindy Mooney; special nieces and nephew Carolyn Hager, Wayne Jordan, Peggy Cotton, several other nieces and nephews and great-grandchildren. Services were held Monday, August 1, 2005 at Ridgelawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Matt McKenzie officiating.

Eloise Fillinger

Eloise Fillinger, 81, of Huntington, peacefully passed away Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at home. She was born July 30, 1923, in Cabell County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Charles and Daisy Beckett Sowards. She was a retired cook from H.L. Greens and Green Acres. She gave many years of devoted service to Green Acres where a special grandson, Junior Johnson, attended. She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Fillinger, and children, Sandra Kay Roach, Orville Ricky Fillinger, Betty Faye Ball and grandson Michael Scott Roach. Surviving children are Pat Johnson, Freddy Fillinger, Roberta Bailey, Jimmy Fillinger, and Alice McCormick with whom she made her home; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; a special son-in-law, John McCormick and daughters-in-law that loved her like a mother; five sisters, Gladys Pack, Lorilea Roten, Helen Sowards, Anna Ruth Brabson and Emma McCoy; a host of nieces, nephews and friends; and a very special devoted friend, Sue Hanlin. Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 29, 2005, at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel by Pastor Pat Elliot. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. Pallbearers were John McCormick, Paul Johnston, Richard Ball, Chris Starkey, Ricky Brunton and Ricky Legge. Eloise was taken from us too soon, but she would want us to move on, knowing she was at peace with her loved ones. She will be greatly missed by all.

Nora Lavonia Adkins Jordan

Nora Lavonia Adkins Jordan, 81, of Huntington, went home to be with the Lord Monday, July 25, 2005. Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 29, 2005, at the Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel by the Rev. Buddy Muncy. Burial in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Barboursville. She was born April 22, 1924, in Wayne County, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Halida and Hastie Adkins. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Homer Jordan and two brothers, Lorain Adkins and Sherman Adkins. She was co-owner of Homer Jordan's Grocery for 27 years and a member of the Rock of Ages Baptist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary at VFW Post #9738. Survivors include one daughter, Patricia “Trish” Simpson of Huntington; one son, Harold Jordan of Huntington; three sisters, Boncil (Jim) Stolar and Gloria (Bob) McClain, both of Akron, Ohio, and Bonnie (Gene) Burger of Rittman, Ohio; one brother, Corbin (Kay) Adkins of Ravenna, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Adkins; two grandsons, and their wives, Mike and Sherry Simpson of Huntington, Richard and Leslie Jordan of Minnesota; one granddaughter, Sherie Jordan of Fredericksburg, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Kristin and Derek Simpson, both of Huntington, and Christian Stephens of Fredericksburg.

Myrtle R. Bias

Myrtle R. Bias, 88, of Hamlin, widow of Charlie L. Bias, went home to be with the Lord Monday, July 25, 2005 in Lincoln Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Hamlin. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, July 28, 2005 at Heck Funeral Home, Milton; burial in Curry Chapel Cemetery, Hamlin. She is survived by five daughters, Sally Fields of Alabama, and Patsy Rockel, Barbara McComas, Freda Johnson and Linda Lange, all of Hamlin; two sons, Fred Bias of Milton and Jerry Bias of Hamlin; 23 grandchildren; and 45 great-grandchildren.

Robert Hearn “Robby” Booten II

Robert Hearn “Robby” Booten II, 21, of Huntington, W.Va., passed away suddenly on Sunday, July 24, 2005, at Charleston Area Medical Center. He was born April 18, 1984, in Huntington. He was a 2002 graduate of Cabell Midland High School and attended Marshall University. He was employed as a manager at BMW Restaurant in Cross Lanes, W.Va. He leaves to cherish his memory, his father, Robert H. “Bobby” Booten of Lesage, W.Va.; his mother, Amy Booten Nagle of Milton, W.Va.; and his beloved sisters, Lauren and Jennifer and his brother, Jared of Barboursville, W.Va. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles, Suzanne Booten (L. Bob) Smith of Boca Raton, Fla., J.D. (Sharon) Booten of Huntington, Leslie (Steve) Cavell of Cincinnati, Ohio, Kelly (Dave) Haslup of Charlottesville, Va., and Jennifer (Robert) Nelson of Columbus, Ohio; and a host of cousins and friends, as well as two adopted grandparents, Frances and Robert Keenan. The world will never be the same for those who loved him but we know he is smiling down upon us all. Robby enjoyed his friends, his work, boating and living life to the fullest. Robby was taken from us too soon but would want us to move on knowing he is at peace. We will treasure his memory and are all blessed to have had him in our lives. Our children are a gift from God and we know we will truly never be without him. We have respected his wishes to be a multiple organ donor and he will live on in those recipients. Private services for family and close friends were held on Wednesday, July 27, 2005 at Beard Mortuary with Rev. Tim Halloran officiating.

Burial in Woodmere Memorial Park. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, Spina Bifida Foundation or the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Madge O. Bush

Madge O. Bush, 89, of West Melbourne, Florida, formerly of Liberty, died July 14, 2005, in Indian River Center, West Melbourne.

She is a former employee of Sears with 25 years of service, a member of White Shrine in Charleston, and the Order of Eastern Star in Dunbar.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd Bush.

Surviving: daughter, Betty m. Rubeor and husband, Russ, of west Melbourne; brother, James Kessel of Buffalo; sisters, Edra Wright of Dunbar and Audra McCracken of St. Albans; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.

Service was held Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, with the Rev. Michael Hanna officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Peggy G. Horton

Peggy Gardner Skidmore Horton, 73, of Poca died July 17, 2005, at home surrounded by her family and friends.

She was born and raised in Dunbar, a daughter of the late Rome and Mary Gardner. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. “Jack” Horton, sister, Mildred “Butch” Smock, and a brother, Jack Gardner.

Surviving: sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Debbie Skidmore, Pat and Sherry Skidmore, Rob and Renee Horton, all of Poca, Jerry and Cynthia Horton of Sarasota, Florida; daughter-in-law, Janean Hortin of Minnesota; sister, Tudy Scherer and husband, Tom of Pt. Pleasant; brothers, Buddy Gardner and his wife, Maxine, of Eleanor and Gene Gardner and his wife, Cathy of Florida; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and her Skidmore sisters-in-law.

Service was held Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor Mayford Witt officiating. Burial was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.
