Randy L. Garrett
FAIRMONT -- Randy Lee Garrett, 34, of Worthington, died on Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at Fairmont General Hospital.
He was born Nov. 25, 1964, in Baltimore, Md., the only child of Richard and Rosalie Nagy Garrett, Worthington.
Also surviving are his fiancee, Gloria McCoy, Worthington; seven aunts and uncles, Margaret Karnafel, Cleveland, Ohio, John Nagy, South Gate, Mich., Virginia Quinn and Kathleen Fedio, both of Worthington, Shirley Williams, West Farmington, Ohio, Jimmy Garrett, Four States, and Bobby Garrett, Canton, Ohio; and several cousins, Mark Karnafel, St. Louis, Mo., Victoria Korkoz, Cleveland, Nora Huienzenza, Las Vegas, Nev., and Jimmy Garrett, Chris Garrett and Donnie Quinn, all of Worthington.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ambrose and Elizabeth Nagy; his paternal grandparents, Herbert and Edna Garrett; two uncles, George Nagy and Charles Garrett; and one aunt, Helen Garrett.
Mr. Garrett was the assistant manager of the Handi Mart, Inc., a family-owned grocery store, restaurant and lounge in Worthington.
He was a 1982 graduate of North Marion High School and had attended both West Virginia University and Fairmont State College.
Mr. Garrett was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 294 of Fairmont, the National Federation of the Blind, and the Stonewall Jackson Coin Club.
Among his many interests were music, coins, computers and cars. He attended the St. Peter the Fisherman Roman Catholic Church and Calvary Temple.

James P. Greene
PHILIPPI -- James Paul Greene, 91, of Philippi, formerly of Huntington, died at 1:46 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, 1999, in Broaddus Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 2, 1908, in Matewan, a son of the late James M. and Georgia Frazier Greene.
His wife, the former Alberta Strader, whom he married on May 29, 1943, survives.
Also surviving are one sister and brother-in-law, Rebecca and Skip Inskip, Atlanta, Ga.; two nephews, one being Pastor Fred and Shirley Holbrook, Dayton, Ohio; one niece.
He was also preceded in death by one sister, Faye Holbrook; one brother, Thomas L. Greene; one niece.
Mr. Greene had retired as a payroll clerk from Clinchfield Coal Co. He was a member of the Bigelow Lodge No. 52, A.F. & A.M., a member of the Tygarts Valley Chapter No. 39 R.A.M., a member of the Philippi Kiwanis Club, and a member of the Nestorville United Methodist Church.
He was a former volunteer at the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Clarksburg.

Bernice E. Nestor
PHILIPPI -- Bernice E. Nestor, 73, of Broaddus Hospital Long Term Care, Philippi, died at 11:46 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, 1999, in the hospital.
She was born Aug. 11, 1925, in Barbour County, a daughter of the late Ottis and Mamie L. Freeman Nestor.
Surviving are one brother and sister-in-law, Hubert B. and Mae Nestor, Moatsville; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Ellen M. and Willis Moats, Moatsville, Dollie E. and Raymond Vincent, Fairmont, and Treva B. Tenney, Philippi; one sister-in-law, Lucinda Nestor, Morgantown; 23 nieces and nephews, 37 great-nieces and nephews, and 24 great-great- nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Delbert F. Nestor Sr.; two sisters, Lena Green and Linda M. Resch; and two brothers-in-law, Irven D. Tenney Jr. and William Green.
Miss Nestor was employed for nine years at Westinghouse Electric in Fairmont. She was a member of the Free Gospel Church in Moatsville.

Charles D. Newbrough
FAIRMONT -- Charles "Dave" David Newbrough, 71, of Fairmont, died Thursday, July 29, 1999, at his residence.
He was born June 21, 1928, in Clarksburg, a son of Mary L. Heath Newbrough, Clarksburg, and the late Roy R. Newbrough.
His wife of 48 years, Doris D. Richison Newbrough, whom he married on Jan. 9, 1951, survives.
Also surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Sheri Newbrough, Buckhannon; one daughter, Becky Newbrough Smith, Fairmont; three sisters, Mary Jane Hearn, Shinnston, Sue Young, Tampa, Fla., and June Woods, Oxnard, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Courtney Smith and Mark Smith, both of Fairmont, and Marshal Newbrough and Layla Newbrough, both of Buckhannon.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Michael D. Newbrough.
Mr. Newbrough retired on June 1, 1984, from the National Mine Service as a service representative, servicing several mines in the tri-county area.
He graduated from Victory High School in Clarksburg in 1946, and was a graduate of the St. Louis Mechanical School.
Mr. Newbrough was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Army in post World War II occupied Japan. He was a member of the Baptist Temple.

William S. Smead
SHINNSTON -- William Steffens Smead, 73, of Bethlehem Community, Shinnston, formerly of New Jersey, died Tuesday, July 27, 1999, at United Hospital Center, Clarksburg, following a sudden illness.
He was born Nov. 1, 1925, in the Bronx, N.Y., a son of the late William S. and Amy Zulch Smead.
His wife of 42 years, Joan F. Brinky Smead, whom he married on Dec. 8, 1956, survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Steven Smead, Connecticut, and Keith Smead, Barnegat, N.J.; three daughters, Mrs. William (Hope) Mannino, Cedar Run, N.J., Mrs. John (Faith) Trevaskiss, Manahawkin, N.J., and Mrs. John (Charity) Werling, Dublin, Ohio; one brother, Edmund Smead, Alexandria, Va.; one sister, Amy Sherman, New York; 12 grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Kevin Smead.
Mr. Smead was a truck driver for Hecht Brothers Trucking Co. in Toms River, N.J., having retired with 34 years of service.
He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy. He was Episcopalian.
Friends will be received at the Dorsey Funeral Home, Shinnston, from 5-9 p.m. today. A service of remembrance will be held at 8 p.m. today with the Rev. Austin Burrough officiating.

Claribel M. Smith
PHILIPPI -- Claribel "Clara" M. Smith, 74, of Akron, Ohio, died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, in Akron.
She was born Oct. 26, 1924, in Philippi, a daughter of the late Opha and Lalah Murphy.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Jim (Jodi) Johnston, Akron, and Mrs. Arletta Sinsel, Philippi; one son, Austin Ray Upton Jr., Grafton; one brother, Jack Murphy, Philippi; four grandchildren, Tiffany Sinsel, Erik Sinsel, Jessica Johnston and Jennifer Johnston; and one aunt, Mary Halman.
Mrs. Smith was a retired secretary from the Springfield Board of Education.

Helen Stewart
FLATWOODS -- Helen Stewart, 72, of Heaters, Braxton County, died Thursday, July 29, 1999, in the Charleston Area Medical Center-General Division, Charleston, following a brief illness.
She was born May 13, 1927, in Bee Hill, a daughter of the late Odus and Ocie Skinner Lively.
Her husband, Robert "Whitie" Stewart, preceded her in death on Jun 13, 1989.
Surviving are one son, Charles "Chuck" Smith, Heaters; two sisters, Betty Steele, Kent, Ohio, and Mary Neal, Lost Creek; two brothers, Charlie Lively, Heaters, and Robert Lively, Cross Lanes; and one grandson, Mike Smith, Heaters.
Mrs. Stewart was a member of the Berry Fork United Methodist Church, a member of the Heaters Community Service Club, and a member of the Heaters Replacement Postmaster with 10 years of service.

Theodore J. Tassos
Theodore J. "Ted" Tassos, 68, of 226 Church St., Clarksburg, died Wednesday, July 28, 1999, in United Hospital Center, Clarksburg.
He was born Feb. 16, 1931, in Delta, Utah, a son of the late Ted and Leah Christenson Tassos.
His wife, Peggy Schertzinger Tassos, whom he married on Sept. 6, 1952, survives.
Also surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Theodore P. and Donna Tassos and Chris and Inday Tassos, all of Clarksburg, and Mike and Missy Tassos, Meadowbrook; two daughters, Gloria Tassos, Clarksburg, and Mrs. Chuck (Beth Anne) Chaddock, Huntington; and seven grandchildren, Amy Tassos, Steven Tassos, David Tassos, Gregory Tassos, Jennifer Tassos, Ashley Chaddock and Christopher Chaddock.
Mr. Tassos was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, a member of the B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 482, both of Clarksburg.
He had retired from the CNG Transmission Corporation with 37 years of service. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
Friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St., Clarksburg, from 2-9 p.m. today. A biblical prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Peter A. Giannamore as celebrant. Interment will be in the Holy Cross cemetery.

Lillie M. West
Lillie M. West, 99, of Morgan Manor, Morgantown, died at 8:10 a.m. Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at her residence.
She was born May 25, 1900, in Gilmer County, a daughter of the late Worthy and Berta Jett Ward.
Her husband, Kenna West, preceded her in death in 1959.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Jean West Ryan, Salem; seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two sons, Paul E. West and William H. West; one daughter, Maxine West Watson; one grandson, Ken West; and one brother, Deward Ward.
Mrs. West was a member of the Clarksburg Baptist Church, a member of the Good Hope Chapter No. 109, Order of Eastern Star, a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, and a member of the Golden Age Club of Clarksburg. She was a homemaker.
Friends will be received at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 E. Main St., Clarksburg, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Sunday. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. David L. Hulme conducting the service. Interment will follow in the Rose Hill cemetery, formerly West Milford I.O.O.F. cemetery.

Marjorie C. Bartlett
WELLSBURG -- Marjorie Carol Haggerty Bartlett, 59, of Follansbee, died Saturday, July 24, 1999, in the Weirton Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 24, 1939, in Clarksburg, a daughter of the late Paul F. Haggerty and Eva V. Haggerty Greynolds.
Her husband, John L. Bartlett, whom she married on Nov. 25, 1957, survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Judith Ann Sloat, Weirton; one son, John L. Bartlett II, Hopedale, Ohio; one sister, Martha A. Mitchell, Clarksburg; one half-brother, Ronald Haggerty, Weirton; one stepbrother, John H. Greynolds, Glen Burnie, Md.; two stepsisters, Juanita Herron, Suds Run, and Betty Jane Surprenant, Corpus Christi, Texas; and eight grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one daughter, Marsha Lynn Bartlett; one brother, Paul Wayne Haggerty; her stepfather, Hoy (Bill) Greynolds; one half-brother, Harry Haggerty; and her stepmother, Madelyn Haggerty.

John W. Carr Jr.
BUCKHANNON -- John W. Carr Jr., 83, of Route 5, Hall Road, Buckhannon, died Thursday, July 29, 1999, in the St. Joseph's Hospital.
He was born March 1, 1916, in Lewis County, the son of the late John W. Carr Sr. and Olive Gawthrop Carr Oldaker.
His wife, Helen Virginia Dean Carr, preceded him in death.
Surviving are one daughter, Betty May Ladson, Springfield, Tenn.; two sons, John W. Carr III, Tallmansville, and Gary L. Carr, Belington; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Carr was a farmer.

Inez M. Cunningham
JANE LEW -- Inez Marie Cunningham, 62, of Lost Creek, died at 8:11 p.m. Thursday, July 29, 1999, in the United Hospital Center.
She was born Nov. 7, 1936, in Lewis County, a daughter of the late Woodrow W. and Floda Perkins Hitt.
Her husband, Harvey Walas Cunningham, whom she married on Nov. 17, 1981, survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Joseph Suttle, Poplar Bluff, Mo., Larry Suttle, Suffolk, Va., and Donald Suttle, Virginia Beach, Va.; three stepchildren, Harlan Cunningham, Mineral Wells, Texas, Darlene Dilago, Cabol, Texas, and Roger Dale Cunningham, Rogers, Ark.; five sisters, Mildred Cutright, Massillon, Ohio, Ruth Davis, Newark, Ohio, Thelma Neal, French Creek, Linda Smith, Weston, and Pauline Kennedy, Burton; six brothers, Carl Hitt, Manassas, Va., Bruce Hitt, Seffner, Fla., Steve Hitt and David Hitt, both of Lost Creek, Robert Hitt, Weston, and Woodrow Wilson Hitt; several grandchildren, one of whom is Rebecca Dawn Suttle, Suffolk, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Roscoe Wilson Hitt and Dana Hitt; one sister, Glenda Jean Neal; two daughters, Sarah Jane Suttle and Sylvia Jean Suttle; and two sons, Richard Lee Suttle and Garry Lee Suttle.
Mrs. Cunningham was a Protestant.
She worked as a nurse's aid.
Friends will be received at the Morris Funeral Home, Jane Lew, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Ronald Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the Rock Grove cemetery.
