Shawn Lee Boggess, 22, of South Charleston passed away Sunday November 30, 2008.

A service to honor the life of Shawn will be held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday December 3, 2008 at Snodgrass Funeral Home Chapel.

Family and friends will visit from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.

Donald Eugene Bowman 10-31-2008

Donald Eugene Bowman, 73 of South Charleston passed away Friday October 31, 2008 at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

Services to honor the life of Don Bowman will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday November 4, 2008 at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston.

Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 PM Monday at the funeral home.

Duane Cable 8-17-2008

Duane Cable, 83 of South Charleston, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2008 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born October 6, 1924 in Brookeville, PA to the late Norman and Florence Cable.

He was a veteran of WW II, having served in the Army Air Corps in the European Theatre.

After the war, he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a BS degree in geology.

In 1952 he began an accomplished 30 year career with Columbia Gas.

After retirement in 1982 he continued to be involved in the oil and gas industry as a consultant.

In 2003 he earned the Honorary Member Award from the AAPG. He was a member of Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral, American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and the Society of Petroleum Engineers.

Duane was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a master carpenter, having built several houses for his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Helene.

He is survived by his sons; Greg, Mark, Chris, Scott, and Jeff; daughter, Judy; 10 grandchildren, and a brother, Daryl.

A funeral mass honoring the life of Duane Cable will be held at 9:00 AM Thursday August 21, at Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral, Charleston with Monsignor P. Edward Sadie as celebrant. Entombment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Charleston.

Family and friends will visit from 4 to 7 PM Wednesday at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston, with a prayer service to begin at 7 PM.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to Sacred Heart Needy Student Fund, 1114 Virginia St. East, Charleston, WV 25301.

Naomi Arnold Casto

Naomi Arnold Casto, 87, of South Charleston passed away October 3, 2008, at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.

Naomi was born April 1, 1921, in Hugheston, WV. She attended St. Paul United Methodist Church, South Charleston, and was a member of the United Methodist Women.

She actively volunteered her time with Meals on Wheels and was a 1939 graduate of South Charleston High School.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Clyde Arnold and Edna Tucker Arnold Clay; her son, Eddie Casto; and brother, Milford Arnold.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Debra Casto of Dallas, GA; Brother and sister-in-law, Darrell and Mikey Arnold of South Charleston; sister and brother-in-law, Arlene and Mark Trivison of Dunbar; 2 granddaughters and their families, Sherry and Darren Ambrose and their daughters, Madison and Ainsley of New Jersey, and Kim and Robbie Miller and their son Lucas of South Carolina.

Devoted niece and caregiver, Debbie Pritt, and many other nieces, nephews, and special friends.

A service to honor the life of Naomi Arnold Casto will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 7, 2008, at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston with Rev. Rodney Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Family and friends will visit from 6 to 8 PM Monday at the funeral home.

Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston is handling the arrangements.

Catherine Elizabeth Cook 10-17-2008

Catherine Elizabeth Cook, 87 of South Charleston, passed away October 17, 2008 at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

Catherine was a member of First Baptist Church, South Charleston, and the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Shelton H. and Mary Overstreet Harrison; husband, Wendell A. Cook; sister, Mary Wright; and brother, Shelton C. Harrison.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law; Becky and Bob Thaxton of Manassas, VA; granddaughter, Cindy Thaxton of Gainesville, VA; sisters; Madeline Miller of Hurricane, WV and Geraldine Kidd of South Charleston. She is also survived by her aunt, Helen Overstreet of Vinton, VA and many nieces and nephews.

A service to honor the life of Catherine will be held at 1:00 PM Monday October 20, at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel with Pastor Jody Pistore officiating. Burial will be in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Lung Association, PO Box 3980, Charleston, WV 25339.

Albert Davis 8-8-2008

Albert E. Davis, 80, of Charleston passed away at home August 8, 2008, from complications of congestive heart failure. He was born January 23, 1928, in Mystic, Iowa.

Al attended school in Ottumwa, Iowa and joined the Navy at age 16. He served in the military during both World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He was employed by the United States Department of Agriculture for 32 years and the West Virginia Department of Agriculture for six years, retiring in 1987.

Albert and his wife Sharon of 49 years, moved to Charleston in 1977.

He is survived by his wife; son, Mark and wife Carol Davis; and daughter, Michelle and husband Wallace Fowler; all of Charleston. survived also by five grandchildren, Matthew and Anna Davis; Rachelle, Emily, and Megan Fowler.

Al was an active member of Saint Timothy Lutheran Church, Charleston.

A service honoring the life of Albert Davis will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 12th , at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Charleston, with Pastor Richard Mahan and Vicor Scott officiating. The burial will follow the service in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Family and friends will visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to Saint Timothy Lutheran Church or Kanawha Hospice Care.

Kaylee Elizabeth Dempsey 10-14-2008

Kaylee Elizabeth Dempsey, infant daughter of Kristi Ann Conley and Joseph Pike Dempsey was called home to heaven on October 14, 2008.

In addition to her parents Kaylee is survived by her sister Alexis Michelle Caldwell, paternal grandparents, Mark and Paula Dempsey of Charleston, and Uncle, Clay Dempsey of Charleston.

Services for Kaylee will be held privately.

Alexander Harvey Ghiz 8-18-2008

Alex Ghiz, 96, fell asleep at his home on Monday, August 18, 2008.

He was born in Logan, WV on June 26, 1912. Alex graduated in 1932 from Huntington High School where he was an All – State football player. He attended Marshall University, then worked as a chemist at FMC for 33 years. He was a member of St. George Cathedral in Charleston and former treasurer for 20 years.

Alex was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Adlah Ghiz; his wife of 68 years Martha Skaff Ghiz; son and daughter-in-law, Paul Lester and Nancy Ghiz; great grandson, Joshua Ghiz; brothers, Michael, Luther, Gabriel, Edward, Louis, Harvey, and Theodore Ghiz.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Alexander Jr. and Cynthia Ghiz of Ramsey, N.J.; Dr. Robert and Vivian Ghiz of Charleston, WV; Dr. Fredrick and Annette Ghiz of Salt Lake City, Utah; 16 Grandchildren and 32 Great Grandchildren.

Services to honor the life of Alex Ghiz will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, August 22, at St. George Cathedral, Charleston, with the Very Rev. Olof Scott and Father Andrew Damick officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston, where a Trisagion Service will be held at 8:30 p.m.

The family requests Memorial Contributions made to the St. George Foundation, P.O. Box 2044 Charleston, WV 25304, or the Paul Lester Ghiz Memorial Endowment Fund in care of CAMC Foundation, 3412 Staunton Ave. Charleston, WV 25304.

Harold H. Griffith 9-28-2008

Harold H. Griffith, of Charleston died peacefully on September 28, 2008 at Hubbard Hospice House with his daughter holding his hand. The son of John and Cleora Griffith, he was born January 13, 1917 in Bridgeport, Illinois. He was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, lastly holding membership at St. Marks in Charleston.

Harold was a graduate of Lockyear Business College in Evansville, Indiana and worked for Pure Oil in Illinois before being recruited by Oscar Nelson in 1946 to prospect natural gas in southern West Virginia. He retired from Ashland Oil after over 40 years of work in the oil and gas field. He was a 60 year member of Bridgeport, IL lodge #386, Scottish Rite Bodies in St. Louis, and Beni Kedem Temple in Charleston, a past member of the Lions Club, and Sunday School Superintendent of his church in Pineville, WV.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Willimena “Billie” Pflaum Griffith. Prior to Billie’s death, they enjoyed traveling the country participating in what became their favorite activity of square dancing. His other passions were working in his garden and in his workshop. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Sharon Flow.

Survivors include his daughter Patricia Harman Fuqua and her husband, Knox H. Fuqua of Charleston, WV, his son-in-law, Ray Flow of Lantana, FL, and grandchildren, Keely Procyk of Lake Worth, FL; Melanie Flow of New York City; Robert Harman of Huntington, WV; Kara Harman of Lexington, KY; Samantha and Cameron Fuqua, and great granddaughter Zosia Procyk.

A memorial service to honor the life of Harold H. Griffith will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday October 1, 2008 at St. Marks United Methodist Church Chapel with the Rev. Monty Brown officiating. Entombment will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. Visitation with the family will take place one hour prior to the service at the church.

The family has been blessed with the help and compassion of the staff at Hubbard Hospice House. In lieu of flowers the family asks for donation in remembrance of Harold’s life to be sent to Hospice Care, 1143 Dunbar Ave. Dunbar, WV 25064 or to St. Marks United Methodist Church, 900 Washington St. E., Charleston, WV 25301.

Special thanks go to the Rev. Monty Brown, Rev. Janet Harman, Dr. Jack Kinder, all employees of Edgewood Summit, where he lived for seven years, and especially the Ridgemont Assisted Living staff for their care during the past three months.

Georgia Cobbs Hines 9-17-08

Georgia Cobbs Hines, 85, of Lady Lake, Fla., formally of South Charleston, passed away on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at Village’s Regional Hospital, in Lady Lake, Fla.

Georgia was born July 10, 1923 in Clendenin, WV, living the majority of her life in South Charleston. She worked in the men’s department at Frankenbergers and Schawbe-May. She later became the first meter maid in South Charleston.

Georgia was preceded in death by her parents, George and Leora Babcock; husbands, T.H. Cobbs Sr., and Thomas Hines.

She is survived by her son Thurman Cobbs and his wife Virginia of South Charleston; step daughter, Joyce Ciliberti of South Charleston; grandson, Randall Cobbs and wife Katie, South Charleston; great grandsons, Ian and Owen Cobbs of South Charleston; sisters, Gay Moore, Eustis, Fla.; Neva Jarvis, Lady Lake, Fla.; and brother, George Babcock Jr., Columbus, OH;

The family would like to thank Georgia’s caregivers, her niece Becky and sister Neva Jarvis for all their love, care and compassion.

A Memorial Service to honor the life of Georgia will be held Friday, Sept. 26, 2008, at 7 pm at Snodgrass Funeral Home in South Charleston with Pastor Ron Schlak, Jr. officiating Friends may call from 5 to 7, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be make to Covenant House Food Pantry, 600 Shrewsbury St. Charleston, WV 25301.

William Everette Hunter, Jr. 11-13-08

William Everette Hunter, Jr. 70 of Charleston passed away November 13, 2008 surrounded by his family after a long illness.

William was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Charleston. He retired from Mountaineer Gas with 38 years of service and was a Mason and a Shriner.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Everette Hunter, Sr. and Bessie Epps Hunter of Mt. Hope, WV.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Annastene Hunter; son, Philip A. Hunter of Canton, OH; daughters, Shereba Hunter and Margo Watkins both of Charleston; aunts Ida Crawford of Beckley and Lorrine Haggins (John) of Washington, DC; a host of nieces and cousins, also his beloved canine companion, Honey Bee.

A funeral service to honor the life of William Everette Hunter, Jr. will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday November 18, 2008 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Charleston with Rev. Braxton Broady officiating. Family and friends will visit one hour prior to the service at the church. Entombment will be in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston. Snodgrass Funeral Home, South Charleston is handling the arrangements.
