Flora Mae Rider Little

Flora Mae Rider Little, 80, Fairmont, died Wednesday (Oct. 25, 2006) at her residence.

She was born March 26, 1926, in Cabin Creek, a daughter of the late Morrison Rider and Lucille A. McKinley.

Mrs. Little was a former member of the E.U.B. Church of Fairmont. She was a graduate of East Fairmont High School and formerly employed by the Bell Atlantic Telephone Co. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by four daughters, Laura Lee Orenberg and her husband David Alan of Pleasanton, Calif., Linda Lou Little of Morgantown, Louise Lynn and Robert Alan Morgan of Fairmont and Lisa Lane Little of Morgantown; two brothers and their wives, Edgar and Alice Rider of Fairmont and George and Dorothy Rider of Fairmont; five grandchildren, Jonathan Lakin Orenberg of Pleasanton, Calif., Alexander Lakin Orenberg of Pleasanton, Calif., Megan Marie Taylor and her husband Joshua of Fairmont, Molly Michelle Morgan of Fairmont and Matthew McKinley Morgan of Fairmont. Mrs. Little is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Little is preceded in death by her husband, Lakin L. Little who passed away in 1967; and one brother, Joe Rider.

The family will receive friends in the Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont, on Tuesday (Oct. 31) from 9 to 11 a.m. A memorial service will be held at 11a.m. in the Ford Chapel with the Rev. Steven Meadows officiating. Committal services will follow in the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery, Shinnston. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Care, Corp., 201 Merchant Street, Suite 1, Fairmont, WV 26554.

Mary Lee Eddy

Mary Lee Eddy, 97, of Schenectady, N.Y., died Tuesday (Nov. 21, 2006).

Born at Crossroads near Wadestown on Dec. 16, 1908, she was the daughter of the late Matthew and Ida Fox Eddy.

She was raised and educated in West Virginia, graduating from Battelle District High School in Wadestown.

In Charleston, she was a member of the Ruffner Memorial Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Women’s Club of Charleston. A faithful attendee of the Church of the Nazarene in Schenectady, she was known by many friends, relatives and the church family as “Aunt Mary.” She was employed by the State of West Virginia’s Argriculture Department for 22 years until her retirement in 1975.

Mary Lee has been a resident of Schenectady, N.Y., for the past decade with her nieces and nephew, Mary Jo (Henderson) and Rex Morris. Also surviving are nieces, Pansy Lee Yost of Mt. Pleasant, Mich., and Madonna Eddy-Brown of Auburn, N.H.; her nephew, Joseph Eddy of North Ridge, Calif.; and several great nieces and nephews. She will be missed by her faithful pug dog, Franklin.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Marie Eddy Henderson; her brother, Glen Eddy; and her niece, Betty Lou Aspinall.

Friends may call at the West Warren Baptist Church in Wadestown from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Funeral services will be held in the church at 11 a.m. with the Pastor Jack Snoderly and Pastor Richard Reese officiating. Interment will follow in the Wadestown Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Church of the Nazarene, 2535 Consaul Road, Schenectady, NY 12304.

The Tennant Funeral Home in Hundred is in charge of arrangements.

John Kimko

John Kimko, 86 years young, died on Nov. 25, 2006 at United Hospital Center after a brief illness.

He was born in Weston (Stonewall Jackson Dam area) in a log cabin on April 17, 1920, a son of the late Mary Figler Kimko and the late Metro Kimko.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ales Virginia Lindsey Kimko, a brother, Mike (who died in the Battle of the Bulge), and his son-in-law, Anthony Felosa. Surviving are his daughter, Mary Grace Felosa of Haywood; granddaughters, Kim Martin and husband Mike of Lumberport, Kelly Cogar and husband, Harold of Shinnston; a grandson, Sean Felosa and his wife Cyndi of Asheville, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Mike Martin, Kasi Swiger and husband Bobby, Zack Cogar, and a nephew Gary Lindsey and his wife Sharon of West Union.

John was well known in the local sports world of baseball and basketball during his high school and college years. He was a great independent baseball player in the 1940s and ’50s, who played against and with many Hall of Famers of that era. In 1947, he was drafted by the New York Yankees, but wouldn’t leave West Virginia. He was a Babe Ruth coach for many years. He had a great love for sports, nature and West Virginia history.

He received a Purple Heart after being wounded during the Normandy invasion. He also received the French “Jubilee of Liberty Medal” as a machine gunner with the 110th Infantry.

He worked as a civil engineer with Galloway Land/Coal, West Virginia Department of Highways working on I-79, and retired from Martinka Mine. He was Roman Catholic by faith.

Family and friends will be received at the Dorsey Funeral Home, 701 South Pike Street, Shinnston, on Tuesday, Nov. 28, from noon to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 29, at 10 a.m. at Dorsey Funeral Home with Pastor Chad Hutson officiating. Interment will follow at the I.O.O.F. Enterprise Cemetery, Enterprise.

Violet Marie Knotts Knotts

Violet Marie Knotts, 82, of Parkview, passed away on Wednesday (Nov. 22, 2006) at Rosewood.

She was born March 12, 1924, in Rowlesburg, Preston County, the daughter of the late Evert Knotts and Nellie Grace Colebank Knotts.

She worked at Carr China Co.

Violet was a member of the First Baptist Church of Grafton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Truman Knotts; one sister, Adis Knotts; five brothers, Eugene Knotts, Elwood Knotts, Leo Knotts, Ronald Knotts and Everett Knotts Jr.

Mrs. Knotts is survived by one son and a daughter-in-law, Larry and Debra Knotts of Grafton; one daughter and a son-in-law, Marie and Robert Bogovich of Industry, Pa.; five grandchildren, Scott Knotts, Keith Knotts, Renee Tecza, Christopher Bogovich and Kellie Bogovich; five great-grandchildren, Sean Knotts, Alexis Knotts, Tamra Knotts, Keeley Tecza and Broc Tecza; one sister, Beatrice Kirkpatrick; three brothers, William Knotts, Franklin Knotts and Bernard Knotts; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Knotts was a member of Gold Star Wives of America, charter member of the National Ladies Auxiliary to Veterans of World War I, Ladies Auxiliary VFW American Legion, Auxiliary 87th A Com Infantry Division Association, USO Association of the United States Army, Senior Citizens of Taylor County and AARP.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006, at the Bartlett Funeral Home, Grafton, with the Rev. Sam Simoes officiating. Interment will follow in the Grafton National Cemetery. Friends may call at the Bartlett Funeral Home, Grafton, from 1-9 p.m. on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, make donations to the World War II Memorial.

Joey Manuel Gonzalez

Joey Manuel Gonzalez, 39, of Mannington, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

He was born Feb. 14, 1967, in Miami, Fla., a son of Benny Gonzalez and the late Marie Righard Dorsey.

Joey was an avid sports fan and especially liked to watch professional wrestling. He enjoyed fishing and swimming. He was a Methodist by faith.

He is survived by a brother, Ricardo Benjamin Gonzalez of Baltimore; a sister, Lori Snyder of Mannington; and a niece, Lisa Marie Gonzalez of Baltimore.

Friends may call at the Hutson Funeral Home, 500 E. Main Street, Mannington, on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Cremation will follow, with interment in Baltimore. Hutson Funeral Home, Mannington.

Mary Balderson

Mary Florence Smith Balderson, 79, of Leonardtown, Md., formerly of Rivesville, passed away Thursday morning (Nov. 23, 2006) in St. Mary’s Nursing Center, Leonardtown, Md.

She was born Sept. 17, 1927, in Marion County, daughter of the late William Jesse and Phoebe Ethel Musgrave Smith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. William M. Balderson, who died in 1998.

She was a graduate of Rivesville High School, attended Fairmont State College and graduated in elementary education from Frostburg State Teachers College. She taught in both private and public schools in West Virginia and Maryland.

Along with her husband, she spent many years teaching Sunday school and enjoyed the church choir. She was a volunteer for Red Bird Mission.

Her hobbies included music and playing the piano, writing, painting, crafts and travel.

Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Kay Balderson of Cumberland, Md.; a son and his wife, Daniel W. and Yvonne R. Balderson of Leonardtown, Md.; four grandchildren, Christopher and Claire Balderson of Cumberland and Jillian and Danielle Balderson of Leonardtown; and several cousins, Gilbert Musgrave, Mona Rannenburg and Benjamin Musgrave.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Rex Arnold Smith.

Friends may call at Ford Funeral Home, DeGarmo Chapel, Jasper Street, Rivesville, from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday and from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 2 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Stanley Merrifield officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery and Mausoleum, Fairmont.

The family requests that all memorial donations be made to a charity of your choice.

Donna Jo Stevens

Mrs. Donna Jo Stevens, homemaker, of Lakeland, Fla., passed away Thursday (Feb. 1, 2007) after a battle with cancer at the age of 74.

Mrs. Stevens was born in Fairmont, on May 16, 1932. She was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed sewing, loved animals, and loved to laugh, but most of all she cherished the time she spent with family and friends.

Mrs. Stevens was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Wilda Crislip; as well as her son, Richard Lynn Stevens.

She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 56 years, her childhood sweetheart, Donald; son, Robert (Amanda) Stevens; daughter, Sandra Stevens (Hollace) McPherson; grandchildren, Ryan Stevens, Cameron Stevens, Kelly McPherson, and Mallory Stevens.

Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. on Monda, at Gentry-Morrison Southside Chapel, Lakeland, Fla. Services will follow at 2 p.m.

Eddie Hale

Eddie Wayne Hale, 45, of Mannington, formerly of Fredericksburg, Va., died Saturday (Jan. 27, 2007).

He is survivred by four children, Benjamin Hale, Eddie Hale Jr., Kirsty Hale and Samantha Hale; his father, Daniel Vernon Hale; a brother, Danny Hale; and a sister, Kimberly Newcomb.

The family will receive friends, Monday from 7-9 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels-Cremation Service, corner of Courthouse Road and Southpoint Parkway, Fredericksburg, Va. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel with the Pastor Johnny Marshall officiating. Interment will follow in Quantico National Cemetery at noon.

James Ward Jr.

James Dressel Ward Jr., 81, of Morgantown passed away Monday (Jan. 29, 2007) at Fairmont General Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born June 24, 1925, in Smithtown, the son of the late James Dressel Ward Sr. and Eve Marie Morrison Ward.

He was raised on the Ward family farm and left to enter the service at the age of 17. He served as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theatre and later served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He then joined the West Virginia Army National Guard, where he retired as a captain.

When he returned from the service, he began building the White Oak Greenhouse, later known as Ward’s Florist and Greenhouse. During this time, he also attended West Virginia University, where he was a member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. He achieved a master’s of science degree in agriculture and forestry. Ward’s Florist and Greenhouse remained in operation for 58 years.

James served on the board of directors for Farmers Mutual Insurance for 34 years, a position previously held by his father, James Dressel Ward Sr. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Westover Post 9116. He was the sole proprietor of Pisgah Cemetery in Clinton District. He enjoyed socializing and fellowship with his countless lifetime acquaintances.

He will be dearly missed by his four sons: James Dressel Ward III and wife Joyce, John David Ward, and Jeffrey Daniel Ward and wife Melanie, all of Morgantown, and CW2 Jason Douglas Ward of Fort Drum, N.Y., and wife, Cathy Balzano of Peoria, Ariz.; and his grandchildren, Megan Marie and James Ruskin Ward, Thomas Mitchell Garrett and Joseph Daniel Ward. He is also survived by sisters Martha Lee Malone of Fairmont, Frances Warman of Hingham, Mass., and Flora “Babe” Hawvermale of Berkeley Springs.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Maxine Rogers and Dora “Sammy” Miller.

Services were held at noon Friday (Feb. 2, 2007) at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont. His interment ceremony followed at Pisgah Cemetery and included full military honors.

Donations may be made in his memory to the V.F.W. Post 629, 803 Fairmont Ave., Fairmont, WV 26554. Condolences may be sent to Carpford@verizon.net.

Wanda “Sis” Hillberry

Wanda Nadine “Sis” Hillberry, 87, of Barrackville, passed from this life Wednesday (Jan. 31, 2007) at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

She was born at Moody Run (Marion County) on Jan. 12, 1920, a daughter of the late James Leslie and Audra Josephine Wilson Hillberry.

Sis was a member of the Barrackville Church of Christ. She had worked as a bookkeeper and cashier at the McCroy’s Dept. Store for over 30 years. During World War II, she was a secretary for several generals at the U.S. Proving Grounds. She enjoyed sewing and picking greens. She loved to go for walks with her nieces and nephews.

She is survived by one sister, Kathryn Robards of Ohio; two brothers, Robert Hillberry of Watson and Dale Leslie Hillberry of Wichita, Kan.; also one brother-in-law, Joseph Bartlett of Barrackville; one sister-in-law, Louise Hillberry of Barrackville; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Paul and Ruth Brock, and Norma Jean Bartlett and Chester Robards; three brothers and four sisters-in-law, Paul and Alice Hillberry, Waitman W. “Bud” Hillberry, Charles Thomas and Marietta Hillberry, Patricia Hillberry and Geraldine Hillberry; and one nephew, Brian Robards.

Miss Hillberry donated her body to WV University Hospital Human Gift Registry for medical research. Her family will have a memorial service for her at a later date.

Shirley Hall

Shirley Geraldine Hall, 69, of Grant Town, passed from this life Friday (Feb. 2, 2007) at Fairmont General Hospital after a five-month battle with cancer.

Friends may call at the Frey Home for Funerals (Addition Chapel), 320 Madison St., Fairmont, Friday from 1-8 p.m. Other arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Shirley Ann Moore Gettings

Shirley Ann Moore Gettings, 71, of Fairmont passed away Friday evening (Feb. 2, 2007) at her residence.

She was born July 20, 1935, in Simpson, daughter of the late Paul and Opal Cain Moore.

Mrs. Gettings was a member of the Baptist Temple in Fairmont. She was a homemaker, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved flower gardening and spending time with her friends. She had previously worked at Owens-Illinois of Fairmont, Bond Insurance and Lang’s department store.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Philip E. Gettings of Fairmont; three sons, David Stutler of Ocala, Fla.; Gregory P. and wife Jennifer Gettings of Fairmont; and Michael P. and wife Julie Gettings of Fairmont; one brother, Dennie Moore of Fairmont; four grandchildren, Stacey Lovingood of Ocala, Fla.; Tyler Stutler of Ocala, Fla.; and Emily Gettings and Sarah Grace Gettings of Fairmont; two great-grandchildren, Alyssa Lovingood of North Carolina and Derrick Ackney of Ocala, Fla.; and two nephews, Dean and Chad Moore, both of Fairmont.

Friends may call from 2-9 p.m. Tuesday and 9-11 a.m. Wednesday at Ford Funeral Home, R.C. Jones Chapel, 1410 Country Club Road, Fairmont. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with Dr. Rev. Holley Faulkner officiating. It was Mrs. Gettings’ request for cremation services.

The family requests that all memorial donations be made to Tender Loving Care Hospice, 119 Pennsylvania Ave., Bridgeport, WV 26330; or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718; or by phone, 1-800-ACS-2345.
