James R. “Woody” Whitlatch

James R. “Woody” Whitlatch, 56, of Monumental, went to be with the Lord Saturday (Sept. 29, 2007) after a lengthy battle with diabetes.

He was born Oct. 31, 1950, in Fairmont a son of the late Clarence “Tubby” and Leora Irene Whitlatch.

Woody was a grounds foreman for Fairmont State College for 25 years, and a graduate of Farmington High School in 1967. He enjoyed the outdoors and his two dogs, Jill and Frisky.

Woody is survived by his wife of 21 years, Barbara J. Mays Whitlatch, a daughter and son-in-law, Kemberley and Jimmy Shepphard of Monumental; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Marie Whitlatch of Kingmont; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters and their husbands, Barbara and George Jackson of Clarksburg, Patricia and John Price of Flat Run, Mannington; several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Woody was also preceded in death by a brother, Randy “Pudge” Whitlatch.

Friends may call at the Hutson Funeral Home in Farmington today from 2 to 9 p.m. where funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. Interment will be in the Grandview Memorial Gardens at Fairmont. Hutson Funeral Home.

Mary Elizabeth Palmer

Mary Elizabeth Palmer, 87, a resident of Wishing Well Manor, formerly of 8th Street, Fairmont, died early Friday morning (Sept. 28, 2007) in Fairmont General Hospital.

She was born April 19, 1920, in Marion County, daughter of the late A.B. and Madge Palmer.

Mrs. Palmer was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Fairmont. She retired from Monongahela Power Co. in 1983 with 42 years of service, the last several as mail room supervisor.

She had been active in the Quota Club and the Business and Professional Women (BPW), both in Fairmont. She enjoyed traveling, bowling and spending time with her friends.

Mary was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by her parents, A.B. and Madge Hunsaker Palmer, brothers, Frank Palmer and George Palmer, and sisters-in-law, Virginia Wellock and Christine Palmer.

Honoring her request, her body was given to the Human Gift Registry of West Virginia University. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Faith United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Roger Waybright officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the church.

Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Brian Varkonda

Brian Michael Varkonda, 34, of Keyser, died Friday (June 1, 2007).

Born June 6, 1972, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of Robert and Debbie (Turner) Varkonda, Short Gap.

He was a graduate of Frankfort High School. He earned his A.A. degree from Triangle Tech. Brian was a computer technician for I.M.C. He belonged to Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, McCoole, Md.

In addition to his parents, Brian’s family includes his daughter, Alexus Ryleigh Varkonda; his grandparents, Goff and Betty Turner of Cresaptown, Md., and Elizabeth “Libby” Varkonda of Bridgeport; aunts and uncles, John Varkonda and wife, Linda, of Wolfe Summit, Cynthia Claprood and husband, David, of Bridgeport, Becky Brady and husband, Pat, of Beckley, Roxanne Buckalew of Cumberland, and Gary Turner and wife, Cheryl, of Corriganville, Md.; cousins, Cheri Gallo, John Edward Varkonda, Beth Nightengale and husband, Tim, and their children, Madi and Bryce, Josh Brady and wife, Courtney, Cherey Buckalew, Grayson Brady, Forrest Turner, Kelsey Claprood, Sarah Claprood, Doug Buckalew and Hannah Turner.

Brian was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, John Varkonda Sr.; and stepgrandfather, Albert “Red” Post.

Friends will be received at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, McCoole, from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday. A memorial service will follow at 6 p.m., with Speaker Milton Welling officiating.

Genevieve Carol Porter Franks

Genevieve Carol Porter Franks, 62 of Newton Falls, Ohio, formerly of Marion County passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Friday (Sept. 28, 2007) at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren, Ohio, following an extended illness.

Carol was born in Catawba on Jan. 27, 1945, a daughter of the late Henry E. Porter and Zelma E. Harris Porter.

She graduated from East Fairmont High School in 1962. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Carol enjoyed reading.

She is survived by her husband, John Davis Franks; her children, John D. Franks, Jr. and his wife Sandy of Saint Francis, Wis., Richard Franks of Beaver Creek, Ohio, Sherry Nalbach and her husband Doug of Arvada, Colo., and Michelle Small and her husband Bob of Warren Township, Ohio; five special grandchildren, Doug Nalbach, Jr., Richard Franks Jr., Brittney Franks, Mathew Nalbach and J. D. Franks, Jr.; six brothers, Elmer Porter of Md., Clifford Porter and his wife Dottie of Md., Verlin Porter and his wife Dottie of Fairmont, Jesse Porter and his wife Wilda of Fairmont, Robert Porter and his wife Janie of Fairmont and Jimmy Porter and his wife Charlotte of Fairmont; her sister, Bonnie Kisner of Smithtown; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by her grandparents, Alva and Genevieve Harris and John and Nettie Porter; and her brother-in-law, Ray Kisner.

Friends and family may call at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. John Snyder officiating. Interment will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Fairmont.

Harry K. Hawkins

Harry K. Hawkins passed away Saturday (Sept. 29, 2007) at Fairmont General Hospital after a lengthy illness.

He was born Oct. 9, 1914, in the Winfield community, the son of the late Nathaniel I. Hawkins and Ida M. Loar Hawkins, where his family had operated a dairy farm for three generations.

Mr. Hawkins was the husband of the late Mildred J. Robe Hawkins and the father of three children, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home on Wednesday from 1 to 8 p.m.

William Joseph “Jay” Leon

William Joseph “Jay” Leon, 80, died Monday (Feb. 26, 2007) at his home on Cross Creek in Wellsburg. He passed peacefully, surrounded by his loving family after an extended illness.

Jay was the owner of Valley Market on Cross Creek, which he operated with his wife, Anne, for more than 30 years. He was also a school bus driver for Brooke County Schools for 35 years. Before those occupations, as a young man, he was a general contractor and built many homes in the Cross Creek area. He served in the U.S. 3rd Army as part of the American occupations forces in Germany in 1946-47.

Jay was born May 8, 1926, and was the youngest of eight children of Anthony and Felicetta Leon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph and Anthony Leon, and sisters, Angela Leon, Helen Fortunato and Josephine Busby.

He is survived by his brother, Ted Leon of Las Vegas, and sister Elizabeth Bonie of St. Petersburg, Fla. He is also survived by his wife of 52 years, Anne (Lupinetti) Leon. He leaves behind four children: William J. Leon Jr., Esq., and wife Alison of Morgantown, John A. Leon M.D. and his wife Marcy of Fairmont, James T. Leon DDS and his wife Mary of Powell, Ohio, and daughter Felicia Leon-Driscoll and her husand Daniel of South Bend, Ind. He is also survived by 13 loving grandchildren: William J. Leon III of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Kate Leon of Morgantown; Johnny, Camille, Isabella and Joseph Leon, all of Fairmont; Nicolette and Luke Leon of Powell, Ohio; and Padraig, Claire, Jack, Liam and Maeve Driscoll of South Bend, Ind.

Jay was a lifelong member of St. Anthony Parish in Follansbee. He was exceptionally devoted to his faith, family and the Cross Creek community. He was instrumental in bringing public water service to Cross Creek and served as a board member of the Public Service District Board. He and his wife enjoyed gardening and maintaining the grounds around their home.

Visitors will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Reasner Funeral Home, 1515 Charles Street, Wellsburg. A funeral liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Follansbee with Monsignor Frederick Annie as celebrant. Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, Follansbee, with full military graveside rites by the Ohio Valley Veterans Memorial Squad. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Anthony Improvement Fund, 1017 Jefferson St., Follansbee, WV 26037.

Mildred Louise Stottlemire

Mildred Louise Stottlemire, 88, of Fairmont, passed from this life Saturday (April 12, 2008) at the John Manchin Health Care Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born in Fairmont on Dec. 31, 1919, a daughter of the late Lewis and Blanche Vincent.

Louise was a homemaker and very loving grandmother. She had formerly been a member of the Salvation Army Church, where she was very active and really enjoyed helping others. She later joined the Trinity Assembly of God Church.

She loved reading, especially her Bible, listening to and singing gospel music, sitting on her swing on the front porch, working word puzzles, her cats and angels and especially her grand babies.

Mrs. Stottlemire is survived by three grandchildren, Robert Stahl, with whom she made her home, Edward Gillette and his wife Amy of Peoria, Ariz., and Lisa Mullen and her husband Frank of Bridgeport; seven great-grandchildren, Terry, Joseph and Beth Stahl, Skyler and Samantha Gillette, and Christina and Christopher Mullen; two great-great-grandchildren, Jeremiah Emerson and Claire Mullen; her brother and sister-in-law, Jack A. and Mary “Dot” Vincent of Green Valley, Ariz.; one nephew, Garrett Vincent and his wife Thelma of Minneapolis, Minn.; and her former granddaughter-in-law whom she claimed as her granddaughter, Mary Ann Beavan of Grafton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Henry Toothman in 1961; her second husband, Ernest Stottlemire in 1991; her son, Lewis “Buddy” Toothman; and her daughter, Margaret Jean Stahl Gillette Chimel.

Friends may call at the Frey Home For Funerals (Historic Chapel), 320 Madison St., Fairmont, today from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home today at 2 p.m. with Pastor Charles Fancher officiating. Interment will follow at the Vincent cemetery.

Pansy Lee Yost

Pansy Lee Yost, 85, of Mt. Pleasant, Mich., went to be with the Lord on Saturday (April 12, 2008) at Schnepp Health Care Center in St. Louis.

Pansy Lee was born July 25, 1922, in Wadestown, the daughter of the late Olen E. and Marie O. (Eddy) Henderson.

She graduated from Wadestown High School class of 1939.

Pansy Lee married her beloved husband, Russell J. Yost on June 30, 1939, in Waynesburg, Pa. He preceded her in death in December of 1991.

She was a devoted daycare provider for 35 years. Pansy Lee was a member of the Eastern Star for 64 years and the West Warren Baptist Church in Wadestown. She attended the First Church of Nazarene for over 50 years. Pansy Lee loved to play cards and bingo.

Pansy Lee is survived by her children, John (Cherrie) Yost, and Douglas (Mary Ellen) Yost, both of Alma, David (Kimberly) Yost of Shepherd, and Nancy (Lee) Bohannon of Alma; 22 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Jo (Rex) Morris of Schenectady, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Yost; and a son, James L. Yost.

Funeral services for Pansy Lee will be held at Clark Family Funeral Chapel on Tuesday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Jeremy Selvidge and Pastor Ralph Fisher officiating. Interment will follow at the Riverside Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on today from 3:30 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Tuesday from noon until the time of the service at Clark Family Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Gladys Vincent

Gladys D. West-Oliver-Vincent, 84, of Fairmont passed away on Saturday (April 12, 2008) at the Arbors of Fairmont Nursing Center.

She was born Sept. 16, 1923, in Fairmont a daughter of the late Gayzelle and Shady Rowan Oliver.

Gladys was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Samuel (Buster) Thomas Vincent who passed away on Nov. 3, 1991. Gladys and Buster were married for 51 1/2 years.

She graduated from East Fairmont High School in 1942. She was a homemaker, devoted wife and mother. Her family, whom she loved very much, was her life, and she so enjoyed spending time with each and every one of them.

Gladys was the oldest member of the Trinity Assembly of God Church. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 7048 and a life-time member of the Marion County Senior Citizen Center.

She spent her spare time reading her Bible, which gave her great pleasure and gardening of her flowers.

Gladys is survived by two sons, Thomas O. Vincent and his wife Carolyn R. and Ronald L. Vincent and his wife Charlotte, all of Fairmont; four grandchildren, Shannon C. Harper and her husband John, Brian E. Vincent, Thomas Blaine Vincent and his wife Kim, and Samuel James Vincent, all of Fairmont; and four great-grandchildren, Dakoda P. Harper, Alex Brian Vincent, Krysten C. Harper, and Seth T. Vincent, all of Fairmont. She is also survived by her special niece and dear friend, Deloris Kennedy and her family.

In addition to her parents and husband, Gladys was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Ann Vincent; her grandson, Ronald Bradley Vincent; and her sister, Audrey J. Arnett-Pheasant.

Friends may call at the Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, today from 2 to 9 p.m. and at the Trinity Assembly of God Church on Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Trinity Assembly of God Church with Pastor Richard Wilson officiating. Interment will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens.

Gladys’s family would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank you” to the staff of the Arbors of Fairmont for the warm and loving care given to their mother and grandmother during her illness.

Robert Lee Martin

Robert Lee Martin, 74 of Alma, and formerly of Mannington, passed away Friday (April 11, 2008) at United Hospital Center.

He was born June 27, 1933 at Pine Bluff, a son of the late Brooks B. and Dorothy Phillips Martin.

He is survived by his wife, Ona Costello Martin; two stepchildren, Joseph Quellhorst of Illinois and Brenda Schlabowski of Alma; five step grandchildren; two brothers, Everett and wife Judy Martin of Mannington and Brooks and wife Rose Martin of Geneva, Ohio; a special brother-in-law, Robert “Buck” Fisher of Blackwood, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by his first wife, Lutrica Ann “Tress” Fisher Martin who passed away on July 3, 1996; six brothers and sisters, James Martin, Emma Lucas, Dolores Faye Murray, Margaret Ellen Martin, Jean Wadsworth and Rosalee Evans.

Mr. Martin was a U.S. Army Veteran. He was a fan of race cars, football and baseball. He enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. He worked for several years at Consolidated Laundry in Philadelphia. After his retirement there, he returned to Mannington after living in Glendora, N.J. for many years.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today in the Masters Funeral Home, 209 Main St., Mannington, with the Rev. Franklin Parsons officiating. Burial will follow at Mannington Memorial Park.

Herman Stottlemire

Herman Louis Stottlemire, 77, of Fairmont died on Monday (April 2, 2007) at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

He was born in Fairmont on May 3, 1929, a son of the late Louie Stottlemire and Pearl Bable Stottlemire.

Herman served in the United States Navy and was a retired coal miner from Consolidation Coal Company, Jordan Mine No. 93. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the United Mine Workers of America. Herman enjoyed the outdoors and spent time hunting, fishing and gardening. He loved planting flowers and vegetables every spring. Herman was a strong man and will be missed deeply by his family and friends.

He is survived by two sons, Herman L. Stottlemire Jr. and his wife Sandy of Fairmont and Allen Stottlemire and his wife Cindy of Georgia; a daughter, Sheila Favaloro and her husband Mark of Fairmont; two brothers, Harry Stottlemire and his wife Janice of Sheffield Lake, Ohio and Kenneth Stottlemire and his wife Joann of Montrose, Minn.; two sisters, Dolores Trader of Fairmont and Shirley Robinson and her husband Clayton of Point Marion, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Maxine Stottlemire of Fairmont; eleven grandchildren, Brianna Campbell, Kendra Campbell, Matthew Favaloro, Samantha Favaloro, Mary Jane Robinson, Herman Stottlemire III, Sarah Vinson, Anna Myers, Joseph Stottlemire, Harold Newbrough and Stacy Ammons; seventeen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Herman was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Burnell Stottlemire who passed away in 1994; two brothers, Gene Stottlemire and Walter Stottlemire; a sister, Carol Summers; and a grandson, Christopher Campbell.

Friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street, Fairmont today from 5-9 p.m. and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Services will be held at the funeral home for Mr. Stottlemire on Thursday, 1 p.m. with Pastor Jim Zinn officiating.

Interment will follow at the Pisgah Cemetery in Monongalia County.

The family of would like to extend their appreciation to the staff of Ruby Memorial Hospital for their excellent care of Mr. Stottlemire.
