Dr. Louis James Giuliani, 81, of Westover, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2009 at his home. Born Louis James Giuliani on July 14, 1928, in Bretz, WV, he was the son of the late Roserio John and Rose Butch Giuliani.
After graduating from Masontown High in 1946, he received his degree from West Virginia University in Morgantown. He was then accepted to the School of Dentistry at the University of Pittsburgh. During his years at Pitt, he traveled every weekend from Pittsburgh to Bretz to support his mother in their family grocery store after his father passed away. Upon graduation in 1955, he served as a captain in the Army Dental Corps from 1955 to 1957. In 1958, he began a highly successful and progressive dental practice in Westover. It was the first and for many years the only dental practice in Westover. For over 50 years and until very recently, Louis practiced his passion. He had a great interest in both the health and self-esteem aspects related to his patients overall oral health. He was a volunteer for the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s Give Back a Smile Program. In 2008, he was recognized as “one of the top 100 dentists” in the Pittsburgh area, by Pittsburgh Magazine. This year he was recognized by the Dominion Post as one of the 100 Most Influential being acknowledged not only for his dental practice and related achievements, but for his history of work with private and public organizations to enhance the growth and betterment of Westover. He was dearly loved and admired by his staff and many patients, young and old.
He participated in many organizations over the years including The Beau Mont Club (charter member), American Dental Association, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, West Virginia Dental Association, Monongahela Valley Dental Association (past officer), Academy of General Dentistry, The Committee for the Preservation of Italian-American History and Culture at WVU (board member), Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity, and he received the honor of Outstanding Alumnus at his high school alma mater, Valley High School. He was a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus and was a devoted parishioner of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church and St. Francis de Sales Church.
Over the years, Louis touched the lives of many youth who knew him fondly as "Doc", coaching and working with numerous athletic teams and programs. Also known as "Babe" by many who were close to him, he enjoyed cooking immensely, especially Italian cuisine and was always making dishes for his family and friends. He tended to his vegetable and herb garden for many years from which he produced a plentiful harvest to cook with and share with others. His love and pride for his Italian heritage prompted him to study Italian and he traveled many times to Italy, always with family and friends. Most recently he took a French class, and was always throwing around phrases in other languages like Polish that he said he picked up while growing up and working in his family's store. He most especially loved being with his large and still growing family. Above all, his selfless love and giving, affection and contagious sense of humor stayed with him always. He was able to look for the positive in all that he did.
He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of fifty-four years, Shirley, a daughter, Alicia Guajardo and husband, Rodrigo of Arlington, VA, and five sons, Mark and wife, Victoria of Orlando, FL, James and wife, Karen of Morgantown, Eric of Morgantown, Chris and wife, Leighann of Morgantown, and Louis Jay and wife, Lisa of Morgantown; twelve grandchildren, Laura and Alex Giuliani, Marra Smith and Shane Giuliani, Antonio, Lucas and Giuliana Guajardo, Hayden, Jack, Brie and Bo Giuliani, and Leila Giuliani. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Giuliani.
The family will receive family and friends at St. Francis de Sales Church in Morgantown on Sunday, October 18 from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm, and 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm, with a prayer vigil at 8:00 pm. The funeral Mass will be held on Monday, October 19 at 1:00 pm, with visitation from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm before the service at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. Rev. Patsy Iaquinta, Rev.
