Mary L. Straight Kerns, 88, of Sugar Grove Rd., Morgantown died Friday, August 13, 2010 at home. She was born June 12, 1922 near Hagans, WV, a daughter of the late Gilbert and Esther Michael Straight.
She was a lifelong resident of the Sugar Grove Road in Laurel Point.
Mary’s priority in life was caring for her family and keeping a beautiful home, where all were welcome. She was a wonderful cook and made the best home churned butter, ham gravy, and whipped cream imaginable. Grammie was a worldwide worrier, especially about her family. She was a devoted loving wife of 42 years and mother, grandmother, and great grandmother forever. She had great pride in all her children and grandchildren. Her greatest love was taking care of “the little ones” and was anxiously awaiting the two new babies on the way. She never hesitated to tell their mothers if she thought they were not doing something right. All of the grandchildren loved to go to Grammys to get spoiled. She was very proud of working on the Ration Board during WWII and still had some ration stamps. Mary was also a dedicated election poll worker, working for over forty years.
Mary was a lifetime member of the Laurel Point Methodist Church and staunchly supported it. She was a 50 year plus member of the Laurel Point Homemakers Club while it existed and continued to meet once a month with all her old friends for lunch. She had also been active in the George W. Phillips P.T.A. while her children attended. The Laurel Point 4-H Club was a very big part of her life in earlier years as her husband Buster served as leader with her help. Some of Mary’s greatest pleasures were attending her grandchildren’s and great grandchildren’s high school and college graduations. She was a wonderful mother-in-law, never interfering in her children’s life’s unless invited to do so, but was always there to help in times of need. Mary always said she was very blessed to have been surrounded by her devoted family, but her family was blessed more for having her in our lives. She will be sincerely missed and remembered always in our hearts with great love and respect. A more caring mother cannot be found.
Mary is survived by one son and three daughters, who are Ralph Kerns and spouse Mary Jane, twin daughters Marlene Bishoff and spouse Dean, Marsha Bellotte and spouse Mike, and daughter Barbara White and spouse Steve, all of the Sugar Grove area.
Mary was lovingly called Gram or Grammy by her ten grandchildren, Debbie Kerns Dean and spouse Mark, Wayne Kerns and spouse Mary, Craig Kerns, Becky Kerns Hebel, Todd Deak, Cody Bellotte and spouse Barbara, Jimmy Bellotte, Misty Bellotte Garner and spouse Shawn, Holly White Cebulak and spouse Brian, and Brian White and spouse Sherry.
Mary is also survived by ten great grandchildren; one brother, Robert Straight; one brother-in-law, Earl Kerns and spouse Louise; one sister-in-law, Ann Kerns Blake Dunaway and spouse Ken; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and life time friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ernest E. “Buster” Kerns on April 1, 1985; a brother and spouse, Roy L. and Betty Straight; and sister-in-law Billie Straight.
