Sheila Day Pauley of Sunset Beach, Morgantown, WV left this world on her last great adventure, Sunday, May 16, 2010. She was born in Collyhurst, Manchester, England, November 8, 1928 to the late John and Florence Day.
Sheila is survived by her daughter, Patricia Josephine and spouse Michael Johns of Sunset Beach with whom she resided during her illness; her beloved grandchildren, Michael Verbosky and spouse Brook, Rebecca Verbosky, and Patrick and Anthony Johns. She is also survived by her brother Lawrence Day and spouse Sheila of Manchester, England; sisters-in-law Marilyn Day and Joan Day of Manchester and Claudia Pauley, Jody Deavers, and Cora Henry of Morgantown; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death, along with her parents, were her beloved husband, Kenneth Pauley; sister Bella and brothers John, Gerard, and Tony Day; father- and mother-in-law Orville and Josephine Pauley; sisters-in-law Flo and Kate; an infant daughter; and her beloved dog and companion, Shamus.
Sheila took her first great adventure in 1950 when she left Manchester for “Mars” as she referred to Oklahoma City, where her husband Ken was to be stationed. Life was very different there but being the tough little Collyhurst lass that she was, she stuck it out and enjoyed 20 more years traveling with Ken during his Air Force career. After he retired from the USAF, they moved back to Morgantown where she spent her days working for Montgomery Ward, as ‘the little English lady’ in the ladies department, and became active in the Overseas Wives Club. In 1980, Sheila retired and she and Ken began their second round of travels to places of their own choosing. Sheila was a lover of life enjoying traveling, dancing, the company of her friends, the WVU Mountaineers, and most of all her family. It was never too late and she was never too tired for her family. Sheila was Catholic by faith.
A celebration of Sheila’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 22, 2010 at McCulla Funeral Home, Westover. Sheila’s ashes will be interred in Manchester, England at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Sheila’s family has requested that donations be made to the Mountaineer Spay and Neuter Assistance Program (M-Snap), P. O. Box 4335, Morgantown, WV 26504.
