Franklin “Smitty” Smith, 83, of Cassville passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 20, 2010. Franklin was born February 10, 1926 in Morgantown, a son of the late Thomas and Gertrude Duely Smith.
Franklin had retired as a coal miner and worked very hard to support his children. He was a veteran of the US Army Air Corps and served during World War II. Franklin was a member of the UMWA and the Mount Morris American Legion. One of his favorite pastimes was watching his favorite baseball team, the Atlanta Braves.
Those who loved and understood Franklin knew he spent the end of his life enjoying his children and grandchildren who survive him. Survivors include five daughters who loved and cherished him, Elaine Boyers and her spouse James, Jackie Lemasters, Donna Woody, Dixie McCuskey, and Dolly Smith, all of Morgantown; two step-daughters Wanda Weatherspoon of Virginia, and Joyce Cox of Texas; two sons, Frank Smith and his spouse Jeannei of Waynesburg, PA, and Gary Wade Smith of Morgantown; one stepson, Gary Lee Woody, of Morgantown; one sister, Tiny Marks of Morgantown, one brother Ray Lynch of Morgantown; 28 grandchildren, and 28 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Franklin was preceded in death by his wife, Alonda Mae Woody Smith; three sons, Thomas Smith, Butch Smith, and Lester Woody; 2 daughters Rosemarie Smith and Debbie Cozad; three grandchildren Jeremy Boyer, Tammy Wolfe, and Gary Wade Smith Jr.; three sisters Betty Winter, Jean Liston, and Bessie Pyles; and three brothers Ted, Wade, and Landy Lynch.
The family would like to offer a special thanks to friends and neighbors on Mickey Rd., Cassville, who showed a great concern for their father.
Family and Friends may call from 3-5 & 7-9 PM on Sunday, January 24 at the McCulla Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at the McCulla Funeral Home on Monday, January 25 at 1 PM with Rev. Gwendolyn McKinley and Rev. Madge Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Beverly Hills Cemetery with graveside military services conducted by the Westover VFW Post # 9916 and WVANG Military Funeral Honors, Camp Dawson.

Cornella Holepit Kun Sparks age 93 of Jere passed away Thursday, April 29, 2010 at Evergreen Assisted Living. She was born March 2, 1917 in Lesinring, PA a daughter of the late Edward and Mary Gurski Holepit.
Cornella had worked at the Vincent Pallotti Hospital for fourteen years and then in the 70’s worked at the Mountaineer Golf Course. She was a member of St. Ursula’s Catholic Church and later St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Cornella was a wonderful homemaker who loved to cook, bake, crochet and knit. She loved her family deeply and will be missed by them all.
Cornella is survived by by four sons and spouses, Joseph E. and Judy Kun of Westover, William and JoAnn Kun of Granville, Robert and Marylyn Kun of Kalispell, MT and David and Martha Kun of Cassville, three daughters, Norma Rischak and husband John of Masontown, WV, Cornella Johnson of Jere, Julia Helbus and husband Greg of Jere, one brother, John Lako and wife Sophie of Jere, three step-daughers, Judy Sparks Walker of OH, Lucille Large of Kansas City, MO, and Dorothy Layman of CA, one step-son, Ernest Sparks of Martinsburg, seventeen grandchildren, thirty three great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.
Cornella was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph Kun, her second husband, Orb L. Sparks, two sisters, Gizelle Bartko and Irene Burian and six brothers.
Friends may call at the McCulla Funeral Home from 4-8 PM Saturday and on Sunday from 3-5 & 7-9 PM with a Vigil service at 8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father John DiBacco as Celebrant. Burial will follow at East Oak Grove Cemetery. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Evergreen Assisted Living and TLC Hospice for their loving care.

Lurline “Kathryn” Speicher, 93, of Maidsville, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at Monongalia General Hospital. Born July 31, 1917 at Spencer WV, Kathryn was the daughter of the late Daniel and Leila Greathouse.
Kathryn was a 60 yr. Charter Member of the Union Monongalia Co. CEOS, and a member of the Methodist Church of Bald Hill, PA. She loved to cook, bake, and have her family gathered around her. Kathryn loved taking pictures of her flowers and always enjoyed the company of her friends. Kathryn was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by two sons and their wives, Larry G. and Patricia Speicher of Westover, and Terrance L. and Nancy Speicher of Florence, SC; five grandchildren Larry Speicher, Jr., Aaron Speicher, Machelle Speicher Smith, Eric Speicher, Charles Speicher; four great grandchildren Trent, Joshua, Ashleigh, and Zachary; and one great-great grandchild Treylan; one brother Freddie Greathouse; and two sisters Eloise Carroll, and Imogene Walker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Speicher; a son, John W. Speicher, Jr.; and one sister Dorothy Darnell.
The family would like to express their deepest thanks to everyone for the love, care, and support of Kathryn.
Friends will be received at McCulla Funeral Home on Monday, August 23rd from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at McCulla Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 24th at 11 a.m.
with Pastor Gale Cobb officiating. Burial services will follow at Lawnwood Cemetery.

Mary Frances Spiker, age 79 of Morgantown passed away Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born August 31, 1931 in Pursglove a daughter of the late Fred and Rella Davy Blake.
Mary attended St. Francis Elementary School and graduated from UHS in 1948. She worked in various offices in the Morgantown and Fairmont areas and retired from the WVU Budget office in 1994.
Mary Lived the majority of her life in Morgantown, except for two brief stints in California and spent eight years in Hampton, VA to be close to her daughter and grandsons.
Mary enjoyed reading and keeping up on current events with the news. She was a loving person who enjoyed being wit h her family.
Mary is survived by one daughter, Lisa Dawn Swiger of Hampton, VA, two sons and spouses, Hugh Joseph and Sandy Blake of Core, and Peter and Dawn Spiker of Fairmont, three sisters, Gladys Stemple of Kingwood, Betty Hurd and spouse John of Charleston, WV, and Nancy Blake of Morgantown, one brother, Tom Blake and spouse Margaret of Roanoke, WV, grandchildren, Shawn Blake and spouse Laura, Shannon Blake Gump and spouse Charlie, Jennifer, Zachary, Ryan, and Lexi Spiker, Daniel and Matthew Swiger, great grandchildren, Samara Blake, Georgia Blake, and Hudson Blake, numerous nieces and nephews and her devoted feline “Miss Ivy.”
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Jack William Spiker, two infant children, Matthew and Jenny, and three brothers, Robert Lee Blake Sr., Junior Blake, and James Blake.
The family would like to extend their appreciation and sincere thanks to Mary’s special friends and caregivers, Jaunita Haught, Chris Fink and Lucy Nutter.

David Spiroff, 84, of Drummond Street passed away Friday, July 3, 2009 at his home. He was born January 18, 1925 in Morgantown, a son of the late Mike and Julia Sulick Spiroff.
David attended St. Francis High School and served with the United States Navy during World War II. He served in both the Pacific and European Theaters and participated in the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944. He was a coal miner at the Kelly Creek Mine in Maidsville and a foreman for Consol Coal in Pursglove. David was a partner in the Owls Club on Walnut Street for 30 years, and was a member of the VFW and Moose Lodge.
David is survived by his wife Glenna Reel Spiroff, one daughter, Rebecca (Becky) Mullenax and husband Glenn of Morgantown. Two grandsons: Michael Glenn Mullenax and his wife Dawn with their three children, Ryleigh, McKenna, and Samuel David of Middleburg Heights, OH; and Craig Foster Mullenax and his wife Kristi of Morgantown. Two brothers, George Spiroff and his wife Carol of Fort Ashby, WV and Victor Spiroff of San Antonio, TX. He is also survived by 18 nieces and nephews.
He was proceeded in death by his brothers, Leo, Daniel, Paul, Nick, and James (Trigger) Spiroff; and sisters Polly Martin and Veronica Mealey and one nephew.

Phoebe Ann Spitznogle, 81 of Morgantown went to be with the Lord peacefully at Ruby Memorial Hospital after a long battle with an illness on Sunday, October 25, 2009. Phoebe was born March 27, 1928 in Morgantown a daughter of the late James Albert and Emma M. Burns.
Phoebe was an enthusiastic, fun-loving woman who enjoyed listening to rock music and scratching lottery tickets. She also loved spending her days with children and playing numerous games such as checkers and dominoes.
Her humor and delightful spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Phoebe is survived by three sons and spouses, Donald R. and Joanne Spitznogle of Orlando, FL, Darrell G. and Judy Spitznogle of Morgantown, and Richard L. and Kathy Spitznogle of Baltimore, MD, one daughter, and spouse, Barbara E. and Mitchel Stone of Morgantown, three brothers, Raymond, George, and Billy, 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
Phoebe was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Rex Spitznogle and nine brothers and sisters.
Family and friends may gather to pay their respects at the McCulla Funeral Home on Wednesday from 3-5 & 7-9 PM. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1:00 PM at the McCulla Funeral Home with Rev. William Page officiating. Burial will follow at East Oak Grove Cemetery.

Levi Freeman St. Clair, 83, of Wildwood, FL, formerly of Morgantown, died Thursday, December 18, 2008. He was born November 29, 1925 in Morgantown, a son of the late Claude and Ora Mason St. Clair.
Levi had been employed as a glass blower at the Quality Glass Company at Van Voorhis (Morgantown). He was a member of Joseph W. Summers Lodge # 173 AF & AM and was a Methodist by faith. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and he loved woodworking.
Levi is survived by his wife of 62 years, Thelma Bond St. Clair; a son and spouse, Larry F. and Carol St. Clair of Wildwood; two grandchildren, Judy Eaton of Gainesville, FL and Robert St. Clair of Chicago, IL; and four great grandchildren, Andrew, Lauren, and Matt Eaton, and Olivia St. Clair.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ieleen Swank and two brothers, Clark and Franklin St.Clair.
Friends may call from 3-5 and 7-9 PM on Sunday, December 21 at the McCulla Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11AM Monday at the McCulla Funeral Home with Rev. Junior Koon officiating. Burial will follow at Beverly Hills Cemetery, with Masonic graveside services provided by Joseph W. Summers Lodge 173.

Marvin L. Staggs, age 85 of Kentucky Avenue, Westover went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at his home. He was born February 20, 1923 in Keyser, WV a son of the late Albert and Verda “Irene” Arnold Staggs.
Marvin was a retired construction worker and was employed by the Plumbers & Pipefitters Union Local # 152 for over 56 years. He was United States Army Veteran of World War 11 and was awarded the Purple Heart. Marvin held life memberships in the Disabled American Veterans # 145, the American Legion Post # 992 of Mount Morris and was a charter member of the Westover VFW Post # 9916.
Marvin is survived by his wife of 60 years, Matilda Castagneri Staggs, two daughters, Marilyn “Kathy” Whitlock and husband Carlisle of Durham, NC, and Patricia Ann Longfellow and husband Donald of Westover, one son Michael Marvin Staggs of Westover, two sisters, Helen Rosiak of Westover and Wilma Goodwin of Westover and four grandchildren, David Longfellow, Michael Staggs JR, Laura Whitlock, and Charlotte Whitlock.
Marvin was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert L. Staggs, Albert W. Staggs, and James D. Staggs, and two sisters, Mary Ann Snyder and one in infancy.
Friends may call from 3-5 & 7-9 PM Friday at the McCulla Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday at the McCulla Funeral Home with Father Joseph Mascioli officiating. Burial will be on Monday, March 31, 2008 at 10:00 AM at the WV National Cemetery at Pruntytown with graveside military honors. The family requests that donations be made in Marvin’s memory to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 1 Guthrie Lane, Morgantown, WV 26508.

Karen Radcliff Standridge age 47 of Hawthorne, Florida, formerly of Morgantown passed away Thursday, November 13, 2008 in Hawthorne, Florida. She was born March 10, 1961 in Parkersburg a daughter of the late Hugh A. and Ruth Jean Hinkle Radcliff.
Karen was a kind and loving person who truly personified her nickname “Sunshine.” She was a social worker who showed the true meaning of service by helping her disabled and disadvantaged clients. She had a love for people and music, whether it be singing in the church choir or hosting tea parties for her church family, Karen always enjoyed being with her family and friends
Karen is survived by her husband, Rev. Andrew “Drew” Standridge of Hawthorne, FL, two sisters Sandra London and husband Ken of Maidsville, and Kathy Cutright and husband Butch of Buckhannon, two brothers, Hugh D. Radcliff and wife Mary of Independence, WV and David James Radcliff and wife Mary of Chicago, IL.
Friends may call at the McCulla Funeral Home from 4-7 PM Sunday and on Monday from 10:00 AM until the 11:00 AM Funeral service with Rev. Kenneth London officiating. Burial will follow at Beverly Hills Cemetery.

Dr. Charles F. Stanley Jr., age 64 of Morgantown passed away Sunday, November 29, 2009 at his home. He was born December 1, 1944 in Smithers, WV a son of the late Charles F. and Aria Mae Holden Stanley Sr.
Dr. Stanley was a longtime professor of Mechanical, Aerospace and Bio Engineering at West Virginia University. He was a humble man who never drew attention to his numerous personal awards and achievements. He assisted with Black Lung research for NIOSH and was actively involved with his student engineering teams. He attended the Kingdom Evangelical Methodist Church.
Charles is survived by his wife of 28 years, Maureene Elizabeth Jacobs Stanley, one daughter, Sarah Maruee Stanley of Morgantown, two sons, Douglas Anthony Stanley-Young of Morgantown and Jacob Turner Stanley of Morgantown, one granddaughter, Madelyn Sarah Elizabeth Riel of Morgantown, and one sister Joyce Stanley Duncan of Michigan, two nieces, Anissa and Kristin and several second nieces of Michigan.
Friends may call at the McCulla Funeral Home, 770 Fairmont Road, Morgantown on Friday from 3-5 PM & 7-8 PM. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 8:00 PM at the McCulla Funeral Home with Rev. Kevin Cain officiating. In keeping with Dr. Stanley’s love of education the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Stanley family education fund for his eleven year old son and nineteen month old granddaughter at Wesbanco Bank, 101 Suncrest Town Center, Morgantown, WV 26505.

Bernice Juliet Steinberg, age 53 of Congress Avenue, Star City passed away August 19, 2008 at Ruby Memorial Hospital. She was born March 14, 1955 in Wilmington, DE, a daughter of Simon and Vera Steinberg of Lauderhill, Fl and a sister of Maurice Steinberg of Litchfield, CT.
McCulla Funeral Home provided cremation services. Memorial services will be held in Florida at a later date
