Melvin R. Bibbee

Melvin R. Bibbee, 79, of Pliny died Monday, May 31, 2005, after a long illness.

He was retired from Checical Tank Lines in Nitro, a member of Community Chapel Church in Cross Lanes, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lori Ann Wears, and his parents, Cecil and Hassel Bibbee.

Surviving: wife, Reba Kessel Bibbee; son, Jerry Bibbee of Pliny; daughters and son-in-law, Debi and Mark Shabdue of Pliny, Deanna Edwards of Leon; grandchildren, Jeremy, Nikki, Cortney, Joshua and Brandon; great-grandchild, Brayden; sister, Winnoah “Sis” Miller; brothers, Charles, George, Bob, William, Gavin, Allen, and Terry.

Service was held Friday, June 3, 2005, at Community Chapel Church with Albert Basham and the Rev. William Layne Jr. officiating. Burial was in Emma Chapel Cemetery, Liberty. Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, was in charge of arrangements.

Virginia Elswick

Virginia Williams Elswick, 79, of Hurricane died Thursday, June 2, 2005, after a short illness.

She was a wonderful wife, mother and Christian.

Surviving: husband, Nash Elswick; daughters, Gloria McGue, Dianna Smith and Teresa Duncan, all of Hurricane; brothers, Shelby Williams of St. Albans and Gene Dugan of Mansfield, Ohio; sister, Lucy Allen of Bowling Green, Ohio; grandson, Matt Smith of Huntington; granddaughters, Kim Robertson of Winfield, Karen Skeen and April Duncan, both of Hurricane; six great-grandchildren.

Service was held Saturday, June 4, 2005, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Pastor James Dennis officiating. Burial was in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.

Helen L. Childers

Helen L. Childers, 95, of Hurricane, formerly of Winfield and Belle, died Friday, June 3, 2005, at SunBridge of Putnam, after a long illness.

Born in Putnam County, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Effie Erwin Hodges. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Carl L. Childers, and several brothers and sisters.

She was a homemaker and a lifelong Baptist. She was in the first graduating class of Winfield High School. She served during World War II by working in the Naval shipyards in Baltimore, Maryland.

Surviving: daughter and son-in-law, Donna Jean and Buddy Parsons of Hurricane; sister, Lucille Fuller of Belle; granddaughters and their husbands, April and Eric McComas of Winfield, Kellie and JoBe Hope of Culloden; great-grandchildren, Richard and Erica McComas, Olivia, Ian and J.T. Hope; several nieces and nephews.

Service was held Sunday, June 5, 2005, at Chapman Funeral Home, Winfield, with Pastor David Johns and the Rev. Tyson hope officiating. Burial was in Winfield Cemetery.

Ruby F. Jordan

Ruby F. Jordan, 80, of Buffalo died June 4, 2005, in Putnam General Hospital.

She was retired from Lever Brothers, Baltimore, Maryland, with 30 years of service. She was a member of the Buffalo Senior Citizens and Oma Chapel Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin T. Jordan.

Surviving: son, Thomas Reese of Virginia Beach, Virginia; grandchildren, Stacy Reese of Jacksonville, Florida, Anthony Reese of Tornado, Thomas “T.E.” Reese Jr. of Chesapeake, Virginia, Ashley Reese of Virginia Beach, and Jason Adkins of Portsmouth, Virginia; three great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Service was held Monday, June 6, 2005, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home, Poca, with Pastor James Arthur officiating. Entombment was in Haven of Rest Memorial Gardens, Red House.

Catherine J. Orndorff

Catherine J. Orndorff of Scott Depot died Thursday, June 2, 2005, at home following a long illness.

Born in Logan, she was a daughter of the late John and Ina James Bowen. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Marjorie Cook and Virginia Sliatsky, and her brothers, Alexander, John and Glenn I. Bowen.

She was the former owner and operator of Towne and County Beauty House, St. Albans, followed by 12 years of service with Ladies & Gents Hair Plaza, St. Albans. She was a member of Teays Valley Missionary Baptist Church, Hurricane, and a member of the Winfield Lions Club. She was one of the first women inducted into the International Order of the Lions. She was a recipient of the International Order's highest award, the Melvin Jones Award, given for outstanding Lion service.

Surviving: husband, Dana L. Orndorff; daughters, Elizabeth Killo and husband, Randy, of Columbia, Maryland, Dianna Lynn Vinscavich and husband, Phil, of St. Albans, Susan Michelle Howell and husband, Jeff, of Jacksonville, Florida; son, John Douglas Wheeler of Scott Depot; ten grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.

Service was held Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Dr. John D. Smith and the Rev. Glenn White officiating. A graveside service was held Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at Highland Memory Gardens, Logan.

Fay Elizabeth Jeffers

Fay Elizabeth Cornell Jeffers, 82, of Buffalo died Friday, June 3, 2005, at Country Villa Care, Buffalo, following a long illness.

She was a homemaker, a member of the Buffalo Presbyterian Church, and a lifelong resident of Putnam County.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Adam and Virginia Cornell, her husband, Alby E. Jeffers, and a son, Emit E. Jeffers.

Surviving: children, Anna Young and her husband, Ernest, of Columbus, Ohio, Neal Jeffers and his wife, Margaret, of Charleston, Mary Sayre and husband, Lloyd, of Pickington, Ohio, Richard Jeffers and wife, Helen, of Columbus, Ohio, Sue McKeever and husband, Wayne, of Lancaster, Ohio, Jerry Jeffers and wife, Debbie, of Arbuckle, Susan Truitt of Grimms Landing, Wayne Jeffers and wife, Marilyn, of Circleville, Ohio, and Debbie Breece and husband, David, of Hurricane; 27 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.

Service was held Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with the Rev. Denver Tucker officiating. Burial was in Buffalo Memorial Park.

Robert Lee “Buster” Elswick Jr.

Robert Lee “Buster” Elswick, Jr., 47, of Crystal River, Fla. died Monday, May 30, 2005 at Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center in Crystal River. He was born December 15, 1957 to Robert Lee and Janet Lee (Campbell) Elswick, Jr. in Charleston, WV; and moved to the Crystal River area 35 years ago from Hurricane, WV. He was a member of the 1st Assembly of God Church in Crystal River. He was employed at Publix of Homosassa. He was a Client of the Key Training Center, he belonged to the Kiwanis Club. He is preceded in death by his stepmother Vivian Elswick, Feb. 27, 2005. Survivors include his father Robert Lee Elswick, Sr. of Crystal River, Fla.; mother and step-father Janet and John Caruthers, Crystal River; one brother Rockie Elswick, Rockwood, TN; five sisters, Brenda Day of Yorktown, VA, Donna O'Neill of Union, WV, Deborah Nelson of Crystal River, Robin Moran of Hernando, Fla., Teana Williams of Crystal River; three step sisters, Bridgett Burton of The Woodlands, Texas , Sherri Robinson of Charleston, WV, and Suzanne McCormick of Hampton, Ohio. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, June 2, 2005 at the First Assembly of God Church in Crystal River with Rev. Richard Hart officiating. Entombment at Fountains Memorial Park Cemetery, Homosassa Springs. Strickland Funeral Home, Crystal River, Florida, was in charge of arrangements.

Leona “Annie” Christian

Leona “Annie” Christian, 66, of Lesage, WV, went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, June 2, 2005. She was born May 22,1939, in Cabell County, a daughter of the late Laban and Eva Clagg. Preceding her in death were her loving husband, Homer Christian, who she missed dearly; and three brothers, Clayton, Bill and Verl Clagg. Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Homer and Krista Christian of Huntington and James Moore of Greenville, Ky.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sheila and Barry Jeffers and Sharon and Roger Pemberton, all of Lesage; eight grandchildren Cathie Elder and her husband, David, of Huntington, Tia, Joey, Paden and Brett Christian of Huntington, Robert Pemberton of Lesage, Lee Pemberton and fiancee, Jessica Faulkner, of Barboursville and Connor Moore of Greenville, Ky.; a granddog, Max Jeffers; five great-grandchildren, Summar, Jesse and Autumn Elder, Zachary and Zander Pemberton; three brothers, Tom and Earl Clagg, both of Lesage, and Jim Clagg of Maryland; and two sisters, Dolly Walls of Lesage and Mary Ferguson of Milton. Mary spent the last few years helping Homer and Sheila care for mommy and her help was greatly appreciated. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Kumar for the care and compassion he showed their mommy throughout the years. Funeral service were conducted 2:30 p.m. Sunday, June 5, 2005, at Chapman's Mortuary by Brother Lue Wroten. Burial in Fairview Cemetery, Lesage, W.Va. James Andrew “Tom” Collins

James Andrew “Tom” Collins, 80, of Huntington passed away Saturday, June 4, 2005, in Fairhaven Rest Home. He was born May 29, 1925, in Cabell County, a son of the late Art and Rosie Nance Collins. He was a retired employee of the Greater Huntington Parks and Recreation District. He is survived by his wife, Beulah Hall Collins There was no visitation. Graveside services were conducted at 11 am. Tuesday, June 7, 2005, in Highland Cemetery with the Rev. Ray Vance officiating. Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville, was in charge of arrangements.

Carlton, M. Rowsey Sr.

Carlton M. Rowsey, Sr.., 68, of Milton W.Va., with gentleness, kindness and love, was escorted to Heaven by the Lord on Saturday, June 4, 2005. He was born November 14, 1936, in Mason County, a son of the late Wilmer 0. and Georgie Reynolds Rowsey. He was also preceded by brothers Otis, Rex, Schuyler and James Rowsey, and one sister-in-law, Hazel Rowsey. He was a faithful, devoted member and deacon of Lighthouse Baptist Church. He retired from Bird Machinery and was a past president and member of the Milton Lion's Club. He leaves behind his wife, Clara Pauley Rowsey; two sons and daughters-in-law, Carl and Debbie Rowsey and Greg and Rebecca Rowsey; five grandchildren, David, Ryan, Derrick, Lauren and Mariah Rowsey; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Don and Willa Chapman, Hugh and Barbara Pauley, and Reatha and Dorothy Rowsey; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at the Lighthouse Baptist Church with Pastor Carl Merritt and Paul Booth. Burial in Mount Olive Cemetery. Philip C. Thompson

Philip C. Thompson, 64, of Barboursville, passed away Saturday, June 4, 2005, in St. Mary's Medical Center. He was born August 25, 1940, in Lincoln County, W.Va., a son of the late Dallas J. and Roma Marie Pratt Thompson. He was a member of Elmwood Baptist Church and an employee of Sulzer Metco. He is survived by his wife, Leah Ann Toney Thompson; two sons and daughters-in-law, Patrick C. and Linda Denice Thompson of Mesa, Ariz., Clifford Philip and Dayna Thompson of Nashville Tenn.,; three sisters, Ruth Hatfield of Branchland, WV, Margaret Sansom and her husband Truman of Salt Rock and Nila Jean Beckett of Barboursville; two brothers, Kenneth Thompson and his wife Donna of New Haven W Va, and David Thompson and his wife Janet of Salt Rock; seven grandchildren, Kristen Renee Thompson, Amber Thompson, Christy Fick, Megan Elaine Fowler, Amy Marie Thompson, Brandon Thompson and Patrick Thompson II; three great-grandchildren, Cody Fick, Alayna Fick and Alexis Marie Brohn; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Rita and Glen Lucas, Jean Harshbarger and Roger Toney; a special uncle, John Pratt; three special aunts, Emma Sammons, Birdie Pratt and Pearl Pratt; several nieces and nephews; and a host of relatives and friends. Alma Stephens Black

Alma Stephens Black, age 91, of Lesage, W.Va., died Monday, May 31, 2005. She was born August 22, 1911, in Kanawha County, W.Va., to the late Leo Earl and Sadie Templeton Stephens. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Black, and her sisters, Freda Runnels and Irene Hogsett. She was a retired teacher with the Cabell County School System with 41 years of service, a member of Alpha Delta Kappa honorary teachers' sorority, member of Cabell County Retired School Employees Association and West Virginia State Employees Association, member of the Barboursville chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of Cox Landing United Methodist Church, and was a “Pink Lady” at St Mary's Medical Center for many years. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Larry Wellman of Gainesville, Va.; son John N. “Jake” Black of Huntington; two grandchildren, Stan Wellman of Richmond, Va., and Andrea Hogge of Clifton, Va.; five grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah and Sam Wellman, Alex and Katie Hogge; a niece, Mary Ellen Clark of Greensboro, N.C. and a nephew, Bill Riley of Huntington. Funeral services were held Friday, June 3, 2005, at Beard Mortuary, Huntington. Burial in Beale Chapel Memorial Gardens, Apple Grove, W.Va. She was born July 12, 1955, in Gallipolis, Ohio, a daughter of James E. Haggerty of Milton, and the late Phyllis Haggerty. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Cathy Batey. Ruby Ross, 87, formerly of Branchland, passed away Monday, May 30, 2005, at Heritage Center in Huntington, W.Va. She was laid to rest on June 2, 2005, “to wait on the coming of the Lord.” She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Ross; her parents, Shem and Ida Bias Hatfield; one daughter, Janice Pant of West Milton, Ohio; two grandchildren, Danny Ross and Kathy Ross; one sister, Cuma Cremeans; and four brothers, Eustace (Nute) Hatfield, Clifford Hatfield, Clovis Hatfield and James Hatfield. She is survived by two daughters, Betty Zimmerman of Bradenton, Fla., and Sharon Jones (Pedro) of Milton, W.Va.; two sons, Hubert Ross (Reba) of Hampton, Va., and David Ross (Sharon) of Barboursville; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Violet Love and Virginia McCormick (Elwood), both of Barboursville and Reva Childers of Huntington. Kenneth G. Moore, 89, of Milton entered into eternal rest on Monday, May 30, 2005, at his residence. Funeral services were held Thursday, June 2, 2005, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with the Rev. Kim Stone officiating. Burial in Milton Cemetery. He was born August 9, 1915, a son of the late John and Arella Reynolds Moore. He was also preceded in death by his brother Minor Moore; sister Inez; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Moore and Roberta Moore; and nephew Russell Harris. Belvie Marie Adkins Nicely

Belvie Marie Adkins Nicely, 79, of Huntington, WV, widow of Basil Roy Nicely, died Tuesday, May 24, 2005, at home. She was born August 8, 1925, a daughter of the late Charlie and Reba Perry Adkins and stepdaughter of the late Audie Adkins. She was preceded in death by a son, Carl Glen Nicely; two sisters, Bernice Ferguson and Myrtle Adkins; one grandson, Roy Nicely Jr.; three stepsisters, Joann Adkins, Bertie Porter, Zula Bryant; four stepbrothers, Donald, Franklin, Harlan “Bo” and Forney Adkins. She is survived by one son, Roy Lee (Virginia) Nicely; two daughters, Joan Bundy and Charlene (Lynwood) Adkins; three brothers, Russell (Tootie), Charlie (Joyce) and Audie Jr. “Pug” Adkins; four sisters, Alberta (Hughie), Carolyn (Hanable), Inez (Kermit) Adkins and Linda (Everett) Dillman; three sisters-in-law, Anita and Hester Nicely and Elsie Meehling; 11 grandchildren, Timmy, Troy, Jason and Gwenna Sue Nicely, Terry Hughes, Tina Adkins, Ronald Jr. “Tink” and Patrick Bundy, Sherry Wooten, Chasity Hammond and Lennie Dale Adkins; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday, May 28, 2005 at Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel, Barboursville by Rev. Heron Adkins. Burial in Baylous Cemetery.

Megan Brooke Poston, 16, of Huntington passed away Sunday, May 22, 2005, in Huntington. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, May 26, 2005, Beard Mortuary, Huntington, with the Rev. Jerry Ryder officiating. Burial in Ridgelawn Memorial Park, Huntington. She was born August 30, 1988, in Huntington, W.Va., a daughter of Kenneth H. Poston Jr. and Subrina Ashworth Poston. Ramona Ethel Dobbins

Ramona Ethel Dobbins, 74, of Culloden passed away Sunday, November 13, 2005, at her, residence. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, November 17, 2005, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton, with Rev. Art Hage officiating. Burial in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Ramona was born February 15, 1931, in Slab Fork, W.Va., a daughter of the late Clowney and Mary Akers Meadows. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Dobbins Jr. She was a member of the American Legion, VFW Ladies Auxiliary, National Society United States Daughters of 1812, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. She is survived by three sons, George Greene Jr., John Greene and Mark Greene; one daughter, Cynthia Greene; three grandchildren, Jason McGraw, Chris McGraw and Jennifer Greene; three great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Wilkinson, Jacqualyn McGraw and Brianna McGraw; and three siblings, Harry Meadows, Janice Cox and C.Q.
