Opal Jane Sandy
Opal Jane Sandy, 70, of Cowen passed away on September 1, 2011 at Summersville Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. She was born February 3, 1941 at Bergoo, WV, a daughter of the late Fred and Erma Griffith.
She was a homemaker and worked in laundry at Braxton Country Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She enjoyed sewing, crafts and watching soap operas.
She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters.
Opal is survived by sons David Goff of Tesla, and Thurman Goff of Gassaway; companion, Carl Bauer of Gassaway; brothers Robert (Gloria) Griffith of Cowen, and Carl (Pat) Griffith of Sutton; sister Louella (Dale) Bright of Webster Springs; granddaughter, Kaylee (Scottie) Stout; grandson, Trevor Goff; Step-granddaughters Janet (Josh) Hickman, Crissie Williams, Katy Williams; and step-grandson, Bradley Williams; and Step-great-granddaughter Gracie Hickman.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 2 pm at Dodd & Reed Funeral Home, Webster Springs, WV with Rev. Bud Cochran and Rev. Doug Martin officiating. Burial followed at Union Cemetery, Parcoal, WV. Friends called 6-9 p.m. on Monday, September 5, 2011 at the funeral home.

James C. Stewart
James C. “Buddy” Stewart, 75, of Gassaway, passed away September 3, 2011 at CAMC Memorial Division.
He was born November 26, 1935 at Gassaway a son of the late Andrew Allen “Bud” and Ella Delphia Lemon Stewart.
Buddy was a parts runner for Black Rock Construction; owned and operated Sutton Auto Sales and later Stewart Auto Sales. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict stationed in Germany as an artillery specialist and was a member and longtime trustee of the Sugar Creek Baptist Church.
Buddy is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Darlene Hines Stewart; children and their spouses, James Allen and Julia C. Stewart of Beckley, Jeff and Kara Stewart of Sutton and Darla and Mike Baker of Gassaway; sisters, Wanda Lee Carr of Gassaway and Jayne Given of Wilsie; grandchildren, Cortney, Clayton, Samantha, Ian, Heath, Joseph, Baylee, Ross, Marra “Brooke” and Liesl “Ariana”; great grandchildren, Jadyn, Landon and Ashton.
Buddy was preceded in death by sisters, Sally Bosley, Betty Lou Friend and Carolyn Carrow; brothers, Albert Blenn Stewart and Henry Berlon Stewart.
Service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 7 at Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway with Rev. Bennie Crigger officiating. Burial will be in the Sugar Creek Cemetery, Gassaway.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial contributions be made to Sugar Creek Baptist Church, P.O. Box 188, Gassaway, WV 26624.

Anthony Allen Yeager
Anthony Allen Yeager 45, of Flatwoods, WV passed away Wednesday, Aug 31, 2011 at his home.
Tony was born July 20, 1966 a son of the late Augusta and Louise Doyle Yeager. He was a Post Line Laborer with Strata Manufacturing. Tony is survived by his wife, Melissa and one daughter at home, Alyson. He is survived by two brothers; Henry Yeager of North Carolina and Hard Rock Yeager of Sutton, WV. Four sisters also survive him; Diana Ziolkowski and Peggy Wanta of Wisconsin, Cathy Hall of North Carolina and Becky Kirkland of South Carolina.
Funeral Services were held at 7:00 PM Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011 at Stockert-Sizemore Funeral Home in Flatwoods, WV with Rev. Carl Bradshaw officiating. Friends called from 5-8:00 PM Sunday evening at the funeral home. Online condolences may be expressed at www.stockertsizemore.com.

Dale Westfall
Dale Westfall, of Heaters, WV passed away Friday, Sept. 2, 2011 at Braxton Co. Memorial Hospital after a long illness
Dale was born on July 2, 1927 at Bonnie, WV a son of the late Joseph Burr and Mattie Shaver Westfall. He attended and graduated from Braxton County schools and during his High School years (1941-45) he worked for his uncle Oscar Lloyd in his feed mill in Exchange, WV. His primary duties was grinding meal and ear of corn to feed cattle and taking the toll for milling charges and was paid $1.50 each day.
He joined the US Navy in 1945 at the age of 17 and served aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Mundae CVE 104. By this time in the war, the ship was converted into a transport service and transported servicemen back to the U.S. One of the most memorable trips was bringing troops home from Iwo Jima after completing the liberation of the island. He was discharged in Bremerton, Washington.
Dale began college in 1947 and in three years he received his second class certification and started teaching in the fall of 1949. He taught school at Scotts Fork from 1949-52, Cedar Creek from 1955 to 1957 and Flatwoods Elementary from 1957 to 1959 a total of ten years of class room instruction.
In the fall of 1959, he moved to the county school board office as the Director of Attendance. At that time, the entire office staff consisted of seven people. His duties also consisted of other jobs such as pupil personnel services, assisting teachers in the development of programs for students and any other job needed within the office.
In 1963, he implemented the first program for special needs students. In 1965, he supervised and set-up the first summer Head Start Program in the county. In 1966, he was appointed as the Director of Federal Programs.
During the summer of 1973, Dale attended WVU and completed his Master’s Degree in Supervision and Administration. In May 1974, he was promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Braxton County Schools. He retired on June 30, 1987 and went back and served one year as a principal. He served a total of the 39 years in the Braxton County School system.
He was a member of Heaters United Methodist Church where he served as a Sunday School Teacher and Sunday School Superintendent and a member of the Board of Trustees. He was a member of the Flatwoods-Heaters Lion’s Club. He was a Building Commissioner for Braxton County Memorial Hospital. Dale was an avid coon hunter winning many awards until his health forced him to give up hunting. He also raised exceptional Walker Coonhounds.
Dale is preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy Elaine Westfall and his first wife, Doris Kathleen Westfall. He is survived by his second wife, Helen Thompson Westfall, one son, Dr. Roger Kyle Westfall of Front Royal, Virginia, one daughter, Katherine Ann Morrison of Sutton, a brother, Denver J. Westfall of Vienna, a brother, Ralph Westfall of Sutton and one sister, Ethel Mae Boggs of Gassaway, WV. Also surviving are 5 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 2 step-daughters and 2 step-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dale’s memory to the Heaters United Methodist Church, c/o Shelia Hamrick, 7849 Gem Road, Heaters, WV 26627 or Burnsville Hospice Care, Post Office Box 323, Burnsville, WV 26335.

Cecil Isaac Fleming
Cecil Isaac Fleming, 82, of Heaters, West Virginia passed away, Friday, September 2, 2011 after a long illness.
He was born January 3, 1929, a son of the late Cecil A. and Marguerite Riffle Fleming. He graduated from Sutton High School in 1948. Isaac worked at Hazlett Construction, the Power Company and he also worked on the Sutton Dam Project as it was being built. Isaac attended Berry Chapel United Methodist Church.
Isaac was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph H. Fleming, and one sister, Texie Manila Fleming. He is survived by his wife, Hazel M. Williams Rhodes Fleming, one son, Matthew “Mike” Fleming and his wife, Jennifer, four step-children; Karen Slater, Jeffrey Rhodes, Paul Rhodes and Greg Rhodes. Isaac is also survived by three sisters, Pearl Blake, of Heaters, Canna Drake of Frametown and Lucy Stalnaker of Flatwoods. Surviving also are 3 grandchildren, 11 step-grandchildren and 4 step great-grandchildren.
Funeral service for Isaac will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Rodney England and Rev. Bill Griffin officiating. Friends may call Tuesday evening, Sept. 6, 2011 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Stockert-Sizemore Funeral Home, Flatwoods, WV. Burial will be held at Heaters Cemetery, Heaters, WV. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Isaac’s memory to the Berry Fork United Methodist Church or to the Braxton County basketball organization. Junior McKinley Stillwell
Junior McKinley Stillwell,41, of Strange Creek passed away on September 3, 2011.
He was born on November 8, 1969 in Richwood, WV to the late Troy McKinley & Macel Jane Cogar Stillwell. Junior was a self employed handyman.
Junior is survived by his companion Sally Fares, Sally’s sons whom he thought of as his own sons; Michael Fares, Samuel Fares,II, and John Fares all at home, sister; Melody Stillwell of Birch River, aunt; Charlotte Cogar of Strange Creek.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton with Rev. Johnny Conrad officiating. Burial will follow in the Stillwell Cemetery Strange Creek, WV. Friends may call one hour prior to the service time at the funeral h om e.

James Ernest Cook
James “Jim” Ernest Cook, age 61, of Gassaway, WV passed away on September 2, 2011 at his home due to Renal Cancer.
He was born on October 20, 1949 in Frametown, WV the youngest of 8 siblings of the late Homer Holt Cook & Ressie Gay Hamric. Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Rhonda Sharon Harper, who passed on November 13, 2000. He is also preceded in death by his siblings Charles Cook, Hilda M. Cook (Allen), Jesse E. Cook, Freda A. Cook (Simms), and Edward N. Cook.
Jim was a contract driver for the US Postal Service for over 30 years, and was a member of the Gassaway United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his daughter Heather L. White and husband Elliott White II, and his grandson through them: Ramsey E. White III. Surviving siblings are Chelsea Ford Cook, age 77 & Jerden H. Cook, age 68.
He will also be remembered fondly by his nephews, Steve Allen, Bradley Simms, Bo Cook, James Holt Cook, Quintin Cook and nieces Robin Cook (Bourne), Debbie Cook, Eessha Cook, Sandra Simms (Belknap), Brenda Simms (Estep), Barbara Wooten (James), Cathy Allen as well as many grandnieces & nephews.
Jim chose to be cremated and in his honor there was a simple memorial service held at Stockert-Sizemore Funeral Home in Flatwoods, WV on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at 7pm. Friends called at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6 pm to 8 pm. In lieu of sending flowers, the family requests that everyone who had Jim touch their lives, make a donation to the American Cancer Society - www.cancer.org - P.O. Box 22718 Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.

Isaac Chilton Stalnaker
Isaac Chilton Stalnaker 26, of Flatwoods, WV died on Sept 4, 2011 from injuries received in a four-wheeler accident on Stone Run Road near his home.
He was born on October 19, 1984 a son of the late Gail Stalnaker and Lucy Stalnaker-Williams of Flatwoods. He was a member of Corley United Methodist Church. Growing up he participated in the Cub Scouts, 4-H, Heaters Charge UMYF, Little League, Junior League Baseball, Freshman Basketball and Cross Country. He later received his GED from the Mountaineer Challenge Academy in Kingwood, WV in Dec. of 2003.
Isaac was an avid hunter and liked to fish. He also enjoyed shooting pool and playing video games. His quick wit and sense of humor will be missed by family and friends.
Isaac is preceded in death by his father Gail, grandparents, Cecil and Marguerite Riffle Fleming and Sam and Bessie Blake Stalnaker.
He is survived by his mother Lucy and step-father Jerry Williams of Flatwoods, step-sisters, Lisa Stewart and Esa Cogar of Flatwoods and Michelle Duckworth of Cowen, Uncle Garl Stalnaker of Corley, Uncle George and Aunt Pearl Blake of Heaters, Aunt Canna Drake of Frametown and Aunt Hazel Fleming of Kentuck, WV.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 AM on Friday, Sept. 9, 2011 at Stockert-Sizemore Funeral Home in Flatwoods with Rev. Sheila Baughman, Rev. Vaughn James and Rev. Dana Friend officiating. Burial followed in Heaters Cemetery at Heaters, WV. Friends called from 5-8:00 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the “Isaac Stalnaker Memorial Scholarship Fund” c/o City National Bank, 1995 Sutton Lane, Sutton, WV 26601.

Thelma May Jordan
Thelma May Jordan, 83, passed away September 8, 2011 at Meadowview Manor Nursing Center, Bridgeport, WV. She was born April 14, 1928 the daughter of the late Ervin George & Mamie Alice Bankhead Roby.
Thelma was a homemaker and a protestant by faith, she lived many of her early years in Replete, WV, then moved to Philippi, WV and in her later years resided in Fairmont , WV at the home of her niece Reta Smouse.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband; Howard Jordan, brothers; Reynold Roby, Robert Roby, Shirley Roby, sisters; Faye Kniceley, Leona Holsberry, Ellen Davis, Linda Roby.
Thelma is survived by her two special great-great nieces; Jennifer Stemple, Maggie Paugh, and a great-great nephew Truman Paugh, special niece; Melissa Kubisiak, brother; Howard Roby, sister; Mary Jane Cowger, several other nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Saturday September 10, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton with Rev, John McQuain officiating. Burial followed in Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Replete, WV. Friends called two hours prior to the service time at the funeral home.
