Rhonda Diane Skidmore
Wrapped in the arms of the family she deeply loved, Rhonda Diane Skidmore, 60, of Sutton, WV, passed away Friday, June 20, 2014, at Ruby Memorial Hospital after a weary and relentless battle with severe lung disease.
The first born child of Hurshel G. Rowan, Sr. and Marla G. Barker Rowan, she was born on July 18, 1953, in Sutton, WV, at the old Sutton Hospital.
Sadly she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 33 years, Albert L. “John” Skidmore on March 16, 2013, and her dear mother, Marla G. Rowan on November 19, 2013.
Rhonda is survived by her daughters, Jonna Skidmore of Sutton, WV and Lori Hill (Robert) of Morgan Hill, CA, and their children, Rachel, Talia, Conner, Jack, and Joseph, and step-son, Bryant Skidmore (Heather) of Parkersburg, WV and their children, Ethan, Lucie, and Garrett, as well as her father, Hurshel Rowan, Sr. of Sutton, WV; brother, Hurshel Rowan, Jr. of Sutton, WV; sisters, Haley Stump (Grant) of Sutton, WV and Cheryl “Charlie” Mitchell (Harlis) of Frametown, WV, who shared a birthday with Rhonda. She always said Cheryl was her “5th birthday present.”
Rhonda often shared her memories of growing up in Ohio, New Mexico, and Braxton County and the years living on Lake Erie aboard a steamship, Champlain, where her Dad worked as a Marine Engineer. As a young child she developed a love of music which began when her parents fulfilled her wish and bought her an organ. She also played a little on the violin as a child. During the past few years she continued her pursuit of music by taking piano lessons with her brother, Hurshel, and enjoyed playing until her passing. In addition to her love of music she also had a lifelong love of learning, surely inherited from her parents. After working for 15 years as a cosmetologist side-by-side with her mother Marla at Marla’s Beauty Shop in Sutton, that love of learning and unstoppable drive led her to return to school at the age of 40. She proudly graduated from Fairmont State College of Nursing to begin her career as a Registered Nurse.
She diligently served her community with a tender touch in her various nursing positions at the Braxton County Memorial Hospital, the West Virginia Poison Control Center, WVMI, the Braxton County Senior Center, and Braxton County Home Health.
Perhaps, her most important role, was the irreplaceable, wise nurse and outstanding caregiver and watchman over her family. That was most evident as she lovingly and steadfastly guided her husband and mother through terminal illnesses. She unselfishly put their needs above her own despite her overwhelmingly poor and declining health. Being a nurse was what she was meant to do. She was so smart and never forgot anything she learned. If ever her friends or family needed help, “Nurse Rhonda” was to whom they turned. Her care for, concern for, and empathy for others was evident right up until her sudden passing.
Rhonda always loved a good nap on a rainy day and the sound of waves breaking on the beach. Fall was her favorite season. She and John would climb in the car and drive throughout the state to look at the colors of the changing leaves. When Christmas time came around she loved driving around town looking at the lights. The blue ones were her favorite color. Going to antique stores was a hobby of hers and everyone who knew her could tell you how much she loved a good cup of coffee! She always enjoyed a late night conversation over one of her fresh baked cakes, cookies, or a hot batch of homemade chocolate pudding. Oldies were her music of choice. She knew almost every song that came on the radio. Every night she and Jonna never missed a rerun of The Golden Girls, no matter how many times they had seen an episode.
Her greatest pleasure was her family with which she shared many of her home cooked meals, hours long reminiscing and story-telling around her dining room table. She spent her time lovingly making each of her grandchildren feel special, just as she did with her own children. She passed on all she knew, whether it was how to play Rummy or bingo. She shared the same Mercer Meyer books over and over to each budding reader, taught how to roll out a perfect pie crust for her famous pumpkin pie, and make blueberry pancakes for dinner. She always hid away too many Easter eggs and loved hunting each and every one. She was always tending to the latest skinned knee or splinter, finding jars for lightning bugs, fussing over the grandchildren’s latest accomplishments and works of art. She made sure they had a snack packed for the road, and was in charge of sewing up torn stuffed animals that had to go to the “hospital.” She loved a not-too-hot afternoon with her feet in the water watching the kids frolic in the lake or pool, and having a picnic at Holly River State Park.
There are simply no words to describe how vitally important she was to her family or the amount of grief and pain of her absence. She has so many things left to do. One more grandchild who needs her wisdom. There was still so much we had to learn from her. We have lost a beautiful woman, a gentle soul, and our anchor.
Service will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 27, 2014 at Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway with the Reverend Vaughn James officiating. Interment will follow at the Braxton County Cemetery in Sutton, WV.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 26, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Richard M. Roach Funeral Home.
Please come share your memories, reminisce, and say goodbye one last time to a wonderful woman who meant so much to so many.

Elizabeth Ann Snyder
Elizabeth Ann Snyder, 84, of Weston, formerly of Burnsville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior when He extended His loving arms Friday, July 11, 2014.
Elizabeth was born July 28, 1929 to James T. and Agnes V. Barrett of Buffalo, Braxton County.
At 14 years of age, Elizabeth became one of the original “Rosie the Riveters” when she went to work in a factory producing munitions and war supplies in Cleveland, Ohio, during World War II. Later in life, she was employed at the Kinney Shoe Factory in Glenville and the West Virginia Glass Factory in Weston. She also served as an Avon lady in her community and as a Headstart aide at Burnsville Elementary School.
Fondly known as Squeak to her closest friends and family, Elizabeth married Junior James Snyder Dec. 22, 1951.
The Snyders lived in Gilmer Station, where Squeak became well known for the delicious food she prepared for visitors and the stylish perms she gave the ladies in the small community.
The family moved to Braxton County, just four miles below Burnsville, in 1962, where they resided until Elizabeth suffered a debilitating stroke in 1997, which robbed her of her ability to cook and drive. Her son George and his wife Wanda of Weston served as her caretakers for her remaining years. At the time of her death, Elizabeth was residing at the Country Living Personal Care Home in the care of Mrs. Sherry Sellers.
Elizabeth dearly loved her family and their pets. She was especially fond of Max, Gracie, Pumpkin and Goblin, her furry loved ones. An avid NASCAR fan, Elizabeth’s favorite driver (her “man”) was the late Dale Earnhardt, Sr. She also enjoyed the music of her favorite singer, Josh Turner.
When she lost her husband in 1971, Elizabeth poured herself into raising her large family single-handedly for the next forty-three years. Just days before her passing, she still asked her children to call to let her know they had arrived home safely, no matter how nearby they lived.
She overcame countless physical struggles during her lifetime for the sake of her children.
Elizabeth is survived by her sons David Barrett (Rosalee) and George Snyder (Wanda), both of Weston.
She is also survived by four daughters, Sharon Johnson (Gary) of Alliance, Ohio; Brenda Gibson (Burnard) of Sutton, W.Va.; Janet Snyder of Kingsport, Tenn.; and Tammy McNemar (Jay) of Centreville, Va.
Elizabeth was affectionately known as Gran or Nanny to her nine grandchildren, Michael Johnson, Darla Adkins, David Lee Barrett, Kevin Barrett, Lisa McKisic, Amy Rose, Misty Dawn O’Dell, Elizabeth Gibson and Logan Gibson; eight great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.
She is survived by one sister, Shelba Jean Allen (Robert) of Burnsville, and a host of loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband Junior James Snyder and her son Duanne Snyder. In addition, three sisters, Lovie Eagle, Gladys Alkire and Rosa Belle Bush; and one brother, Burton Ray Barrett, preceded her in death.
Family received friends Monday, July 14 from 5-8 p.m. at the Stockert-Paletti Funeral Home, 378 Flatwoods Corner Drive, Flatwoods, W.Va. 26621. Funeral services will take place Tuesday, July 15 at 11 a.m. at the Little Kanawha Independent Church below Burnsville with Pastor Ronzel Roberts officiating. Interment will follow in the K of P Cemetery in Burnsville.
A longtime member of the Little Kanawha Independent Church in Burnsville, Elizabeth deeply appreciated Reverend Roberts and his wife Leona, who visited her faithfully until her passing.
The Stockert-Paletti Funeral Home of Flatwoods will be caring for the Snyder family.
