Melvin Dain James
Melvin Dain James, 72, of Gassaway passed away July 13, 2015 at Select Specialty Hospital, Charleston.
He was born July 31, 1942 at Frametown a son of the late Jesse P. and Clara M. Friend James.
Melvin was a manager for Heck’s Department Store. He was a member of the Gassaway Baptist Church, Gassaway Masonic Lodge and the Oder of the Eastern Star. He a was former council member for the Town of Gassaway. He enjoyed carpentry, guns, hunting, golf, watching baseball and playing pool. His biggest hobby was watching his grandchildren play sports and grow up.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jill Vankirk James; daughters, Melissa Kitzmiller (Ron) of Heaters, Kelly Zummo (Vinnie) of Bridgeport and Marcia James of Charleston; brothers, Vernon James (Pat) of Winfield, Vaughn James (Patty) of Frametown, Larry James (Pat) of Frametown and Stephen James of Charleston; sisters, Carol James of Cross Lanes and Mary Cogar (Jon) of Fairmont; grandchildren, Katelyn Kitzmiller, Gabe Zummo and Dominic Zummo; several nieces and nephews.
Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 18, 2015 at Gassaway Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Stump officiating. Interment will be in the Chrisman Cemetery, Chapel.
Visitation will be three hours prior to service at the church.
In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial donations be made to the Gassaway Baptist Church, P.O. Box 128, Gassaway, WV 26624.

Allie Irene Campbell
Allie Irene Campbell, 85, of Servia completed her earthly journey to eternal life on July 13, 2015 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV.
She was born on June 6, 1930 to the late Okey A. Nottingham and Ada M. Marks. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sisters, Mabel and Velma, and brothers, Glenvil, Carl and Dana.
She was a member of Faith Missionary Baptist Church of Servia. She enjoyed canning vegetables from her garden and quilting. As a homemaker she enjoyed her family, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Stanley; daughters, Karen Rose (Bill), Sharon Moats (Doug), and Pamela Mick (Steve); sons, Steve Campbell (Nancy), Rick Campbell (Susie), and Kevin Campbell; sister Faye Riddle of Texas; brother Cecil Nottingham of Ohio; 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
Service will be 11a.m. Thursday 16, 2015, at Richard M. Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway with the Reverend Roy G. Mullins officiating. Interment will be at the Campbell-Hall Family Cemetery, Servia.
Friends may join the family for visitation 6-9p.m. Wednesday evening, July 15, 2015 at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Faith Missionary Baptist church of Servia, c/o Stanley Campbell, 570 Hallsburg Rd., Duck, WV 25063.

Ed W. Cooley
Ed W. Cooley of Flatwoods, WV, 65, was born on July 25, 1949 in Winston Salem, NC to the late E. R. “Rudolph” and Marjorie E. Bedsaul Cooley of Lambsburg, VA went home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 10, 2015, at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center, Clarksburg, WV.
He is survived by his wife of forty years, Mary Weese Cooley, daughters; Jennifer (Mike) Singleton of Exchange, WV and Roberta “Flash” (Chris) Hudkins of Flatwoods, WV; grandchildren Shawn Singleton, Hannah Cooley, Stephanie Singleton and Justin Edward Hudkins; brother Bill (Judy) Cooley of Lambsburg, VA and lots of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Ed was an Army Veteran and stationed in Alaska during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Legion Post 33 and also served as the Finance Officer. He was a member of the Honor Guard, was the first Fire Chief of the Erbacon Volunteer Fire Department, Erbacon, WV and a former member of the Flatwoods Volunteer Fire Department. Ed and his wife, Mary, were the owners of the Cooley Lumber Company since 1976. He was also a former member of Lambsburg Christian Church, Lambsburg, VA, Flatwoods United Methodist Church, Flatwoods, WV and the Sunrise Community Church, Sutton, WV. In earlier years Ed helped his brother Bill who ran a modified race car. He helped his community in many ways. After he was diagnosed with cancer in 2007 he enjoyed camping and riding the side by side with his family and friends. He very much enjoyed all of his precious grandchildren of which the youngest was born on his birthday and named after him. Ed loved the Lord was always ready to sit down with anyone at any time and discuss the bible. He loved learning about the Lord and sharing his love for the Lord and the bible.
Visitation will be held at the Stockert-Paletti Funeral Home, 378 Flatwoods Corner Road, Flatwoods, WV 26621 on Saturday, July 18, 2015 from 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. with the funeral service following at 1:00 p.m. with the Reverend James R. Shaw officiating. Graveside rights will follow at the Mack Wayne Cemetery, Dennison Run Road, Cowen, WV, with full Military Honors being performed by the Braxton County American Legion Post 33 of Sutton, WV. Words of comfort and memories may be expressed to the family at stockert-paletti.com.

Virginia Margret Rhodes
Virginia Margret Rhodes, 90, of Elkins formally of Sutton passed away Thursday, July 9, 2015 at Nellas Nursing Home in Elkins, WV.
She was born on June 17, 1925 in Howesville, WV, the daughter of the late James Kelley & Ora Grace Britton Rhodes. She is also preceded in death by her brothers; George, Floyd Earl, Jimmy, Everett, Elwood, sisters; Betty, Maxine, Helen, grandson; Chris.
Virginia is survived by her son; Randy Donohue and wife Robin of Elkins, daughter; Carolyn Sue Byerly of Elkins, brother; Phil Rhodes of Conyers, GA, granddaughter; Angie, great grandchildren; Courtney, Shelby, Alexis, Shawn, one great-great grandchild.
Memorial services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 18, 2015, at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home with the Rev. Robey Godfrey officiating. There will be a gathering of family and friends at 12:00 pm noon at the funeral home.

Ernest “Ernie” Harley Jarvis
Ernest “Ernie” Harley Jarvis, 71, of Sutton, WV, peacefully passed away at home surrounded by his family on July 16, 2015 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Gassaway, WV on July 2, 1944 to Clyde Jarvis and Gwen (Sands) Jarvis Berry, who precede him in death.
He is also preceded in death by his son, James Leake, his step-father, Harry Berry, and his brother, Bill Jarvis.
Those surviving left to honor his memory are his wife, Laura Jarvis, married on December 24, 2003; daughter, Kelly Kniceley and her husband, Denver of Sutton, WV; sons, Tim Jarvis, Josh Jarvis, and Matthew Haley, all of Sutton, WV; grandchildren, Caitlin Dennison, Damon and Megan Jarvis, Alexis, Ethan and Jocelyn Haley, and Jasmine and Camylle Leake. Also surviving are sisters, Lorna Sue James and her husband John of Sutton, WV and Norma Bright and her husband David, of Lost Creek, WV.
Ernie was a 1963 graduate of Sutton High School. He later joined the Air Force and served during the Vietnam Era. He worked for Bell Atlantic/Verizon for many years until retirement. During this time, he became a lifetime member of Telephone Pioneers of America, also serving as President of WV Chapter. He was actively involved in many organizations and clubs. He was a founding member of the International Sports Jamboree for the Handicapped and was devoted to this organization for 35 years. He had also been previously involved with the Central WV Riding Club, American Quarter Horse Association, Appaloosa Club, The Bass Club, The Archery Club and was a member of Sutton Moose Lodge, participating in many charitable activities. Ernie was also an avid Beagler and participated in field trials across the Mid and Eastern U.S. for many years.
Of all his accomplishments, Ernie was most proud of his service contribution to the youth of Braxton County. He enjoyed coaching and being involved in youth sport activities. He worked as a coach for BCMS Football, BCHS Softball and Volleyball and Braxton County Little League.
Ernie was Methodist by faith. At his request, his body will be cremated. Family will receive friends at the Stockert-Paletti Funeral Home located at 378 Flatwoods Corner Road, Flatwoods, WV 26621 on Monday, July 20, 2015 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. A private family interment service will follow at the family farm.
The Stockert-Paletti Funeral Home of Flatwoods, WV is in charge of the arrangements for the Jarvis family.

Carmen M. Zubricky
Mrs. Carmen M. Zubricky, 77, of Adel, GA, passed away on June 18, 2015 at her home. She was born July 19, 1937 in Perkins West Virginia to Billy Cox and Thelma Miller. She was a 1955 graduate of Normantown High School. Mrs. Zubricky worked as a homemaker, dietician, and also worked in quality control with Moen. Before moving to Adel in 2006, she and her husband lived in Valdosta GA for several years. She attended Moody Air Force Base Chapel.
She is survived by her loving husband of 27 years, Mr. Frank Zubricky of Adel Georgia; her daughters: Carala Carr of Canvas WV, Kimberly Carr – Debolt and husband Robert of Canvas WV; grandchildren: Jennifer Brozy of Canvas WV, Julie Wallace of Elyria OH, John Wallace of Elyria OH; great grandchildren: Ty and Bryar Grace Redden of Canvas WV, Mallory and Camille Dunlop of Elyria OH; her sisters: Joyce Miller of Nova OH and Brenda Jalowiec of Grafton OH; daughters in law: Bonnie Reynolds Wallace of Elyria OH, Barbara Kiser Carr of Carol Gables FL; step children: Mary Jo Zubricky Monogan of Nashville GA, Michael and Marisol Zubricky of Palm Beach FL, and Mark and Melissa Zubricky of Medina OH; step grandchildren: Melanie Monogon of South Amherst OH, Pamela Shopoff of Wadsworth OH; and step great granddaughter: Katee Yates of Wadsworth OH.
She was preceded in death by her 2 sons: William Eugene Wallace, who passed in 1981, and William Neal Carr, who passed in 2011.
Per her request Mrs. Zubricky was cremated and burial will be at a later date in Nesbet Cemetery in Grafton OH near her family.
A memorial service for Mrs. Zubricky was held Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Boone Funeral Home with Father Fredy Angel and Chaplain Skip Van Nuss officiating. The family received friends thirty minutes prior to the memorial service. William C. “Bill” Martin
William C. “Bill” Martin, 63, of Sutton passed away, Monday, July 27, 2015 at CAMC Memorial Hospital in Charleston, WV after a sudden illness.
He was born April 24, 1952 in Sutton, to the late Gilbert Clinton & Reva Clarice Karickhoff Martin.
Bill graduated WVU School of Law where he received his Doctorate Degree in 1978. After graduation he became Prosecuting Attorney for Braxton County for 18 years and owned his own Family Law Practice in Braxton County, the William C. Martin Law Firm, he continued with his parents business as owner and operator of Sutton IGA Express, and was a member of Christ Church United Methodist, Sutton.
Bill is survived by his wife; Margaret Grace (Mimi) O’Connor Martin, son; Christopher Martin (Stephanie) of Portsmouth, VA, daughters; Michelle Gearhart (Shawn), Melanie Grace Fisher and Meghan Spears (Michael) all of Charleston, WV, grandchildren; Mitchell, Avery, Sophia, Patrick, Sidney and Scarlett.
Memorial gathering was held on Saturday August 1, 2015 from 5-7 p.m. at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton.

Vera Jeanne Sovine Riddle
Vera Jeanne Sovine Riddle, 81, of Wheeling WV, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2015 in Liza’s Place, Wheeling.
She was born June 17, 1934 in Wagy WV, daughter of the late Nellie Sartin and Major Dobson.
Vera was a retired Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the State of WV, she received her Masters of Counseling from WV State and WVU, was a flea market vendor in Marshall County, and loved to travel, camp, fish, cook and play Bingo.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Roy Sovine Jr.
Vera is survived by her husband of 33 years, Richard Riddle of Wheeling; five children, Joanna Hein of St. Albans, WV, Susan (Stanley) Clark of Poca, WV, Mary Batten of St. Albens, WV, Peggy (Steve) Kyer of Spencer, WV and Steve (Kim) Sovine of Montross, VA; fifteen grandchildren; several great grandchildren and numerous cousins.
A Memorial Gathering will be held at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Elm Grove Chapel, 154 Kruger Street, Wheeling, Saturday August 1, 2015 from noon until the time of services at 1pm with Rev. Glen Baker officiating.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contribution can be made to Valley Hospice at 10686 State Route 150, Rayland OH 43943.

Carl H. "Bud" Coombs

Carl H. “Bud” Coombs, 71, of Sutton Died December 11, 2008 in Braxton County Memorial Hospital, Gassaway, WV. He was born November 27, 1937, a son of the late Boyd & Doris Brady Coombs. Also preceding him in death were 3 brothers Charles, Glen & Burnell Coombs and 3 sisters Carolyn Freeman, Pauline Rhodes and Thelma Coombs.

He attended the Trinity Baptist Church, Birch River, WV and was a diesel mechanic.

He is survived by his wife Martha Coombs; one son Tony Coombs and wife Elizabeth of Savannah, GA; two daughters Marolyn Fortner & husband Guy of Wrightsville, GA, and Sherry Kowtko & husband George of Dublin, GA; one step son Richard Lucy & wife Carolyn of Newville, WV; one step daughter Glenda Gilkeson & husband David of Webster Springs, WV; 2 brothers Gene Coombs and wife Helen of Indiana and Jim Coombs of Sutton, WV; 3 sisters Sue Moore & husband Dale of Sutton, Kate Hoover & husband Harold of Birch River, and Eva Carter & husband Bobby of Tennessee; 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 14, 2008 at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton with Rev. Ronnie Tinney officiating. Burial will be in the Hoover Cemetery, Bug Ridge, Sutton, WV. Friends may call Saturday, Dec. 13 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Alva Loyd “Bill” Green

Alva Loyd “Bill” Green, 75, of Sutton, WV died December 10, 2008 at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, WV. He was born in Braxton County, WV June 3, 1932, a son of the late Alonzo & Myrtle Hamner Green. Also preceding him in death were: his first wife Wanda Lou Holmes Green; one brother Percy Green, and 4 sisters Freda Brady, Etta Jane Baughman, Maxine Mace, and Bonnie Steevers.

He was a Baptist by faith and attended the Sutton Baptist Church, Sutton and was a retired coal miner and railroader, having worked for the B & O and C & O Railroads.

He is survived by his wife Valarie Skidmore McCormick Green; 3 sons Jack Green and Rod Green both of Akron, OH, Mark Green of Birch River, WV; and 2 sisters Alice Scott of Cedarville, WV and Oleta Ann Green Clutter of Sutton, WV.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 15, 2008 at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton with Rev. Mike Sisson and Rev. Bill Griffin officiating. Burial will be in the Braxton County Cemetery, Airport Road, Sutton, WV. Friends may call Sunday from 6 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
