Mr. Andrew W. Prather, Jr., 76 of Poca went home to the Lord on April 3, 2010 at the Hubbard Hospice House following a long illness.
He was a US Army Veteran and a member of the United Mine Workers Association. He was retired from Canneton Industries. He never met a stranger and took pleasure in sharing the word of the Lord any chance he could.
Andrew is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Mrs. Judy Mae Prather; son Teddy Cochran and companion Ada Pine; two grandchildren that he and his wife raised from infancy, Brandon Cochran at home and Brandy Cochran and companion Derek Dickens of Nitro and grandson Cody Cochran of Cross Lanes.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Hubbard Hospice House for their care given to Andrew.
A tribute to the life of Andrew will be 2:00 PM Thursday April 8, 2010 at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim McCallister officiating. Burial will follow in Clark Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Alzheimer's Association.

Mr. Jerry B. Goodwin, Sr., 67, of Poca went to be with the Lord April 3, 2010, at his home.
Born July 22, 1942, he was preceded in death by his parents, Millard and Rose Goodwin; brother Robert Goodwin and his first wife Anna Goodwin.
His survivors include his wife, Dreama Fisher Goodwin; son Jerry, Jr. (Pam) Goodwin; three daughters, Kim (Rick) Mallory, Kitty (Ben) Lamb, Karla (Ray) Racer; three step-children Pamela (Michael) Helmick, David (Karen) Fisher, and Steven (Alisha) Fisher; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and nine step-grandchildren. His surviving siblings include three brothers Jim, Jack, and Danny Goodwin.
Jerry was retired from AEP Central Machine Shop and a member of Mountain Heights Church. He is a man who knew Christ, and now has gone to be with the Father. He will be missed.
A tribute to the life of Mr. Jerry B. Goodwin will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 6 at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Pastors Benny Pauley and Brad Chittenden officiating. Burial will follow in Graceland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 5, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home.

Dr. Alfred John Magee, 90 of Kanawha City passed away March 31, 2010 in CAMC Memorial Division.
Alfred was the son of Hugh and Mary J Magee. He was born in Jersey City, NJ and preceded in death by his brothers Edward, Hugh, Joseph, and George and their wives as well as his sister Mary.
He is survived by his wife Joyce, of 56 years and leaves behind his daughters and their husbands, Louise and Jeff McClung, and Susan and John O’Brian; sons and their wives , Harry and Elizabeth Magee, Edward and Janet Magee, John and Julie Magee, and Richard and Junko Magee: 11 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was an active member of St. Agnes church and served in the US Army.
He practiced ophthalmology for 32 years in Charleston and 8 years in Summersville and was a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at West Virginia University. He was a wonderful husband and greatly loved father.
The time of visitation will be from 6-8 p.m., Sunday, April 4th at St. Agnes church. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 5th at St. Agnes Church. Memorial contributions may be made to St Agnes Church, 4801 Staunton Avenue, SE, Charleston, WV 25304 or charity of your choice.

Agnes E. Schamber
Agnes E. Schamber, 93, peacefully passed away Aug. 13, 2006, at the home of her son, A. Robert Schamber of Nitro.
She was born Aug. 1, 1913, in Medicine Hat, Saskatchewan, Canada, and became a citizen of the United States in 1976.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Bertha Bieberdorf; her husband, Alfred R. Schamber; one sister, Elsie Ermish; and two brothers, George and Donald Bieberdorf.
She is survived by one sister, Leona Ferguson of Hot Springs, S.D.; three children, A. Robert Schamber of Nitro, Richard George Schamber of Bainbridge, Wash., and Mary Jean Shaw of Egan, Minn.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She recently moved to Nitro from Rapid City, S.D., where she lived for over 70 years.
She graduated from Black Hills State University, Spearfish, S.D., in 1964. She taught for many years in Nebraska and South Dakota, with the last 33 years in South Dakota, mainly in Rapid City, S.D.
There will be no service here in Nitro.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Zion Lutheran Church, Rapid City, S.D., where she was a member. She will be laid to rest in Pine Lawn Memorial Park, Rapid City, next to her husband.

Nancy L. Bess

Nancy Lee Bess, 79, of Cedar Grove, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on June 10, 2008, after a long illness.

She was a faithful Christian and attended the United Methodist Church, Cedar Grove. She worked many years at the Kanawha Valley Motel, where she retired. She dedicated her life to taking care of her family, whom she loved very much.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Caroline Jett; brothers, Don and Ivan Jett; sisters, Elizabeth Leffingwell, Nora Mae Faulkner.

Surviving are husband, William “Johnny” Bess of Cedar Grove; son, Barry Bess (Nora) of Cedar Grove; grandchildren, John Bess (Sherry) of Hernshaw, Amanda Harless (George) of Shrewsbury, Carrie Balser (Bruce) of Cedar Grove; great-grandchildren, Brody Bess, Sarah, Jacob Harless, Haley Spelock, Sidney, Brandon, Corey Balser; brother, Floyd Jett (Loraine) of Morehaven, Fla.; many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

We would like to give a special thanks to Hospice, Donna, Edie, Kim, and Ritchie for the compassion and kindness. Thank you so much! Also, a very special thanks to Dr. Ward for being so kind and for taking care of our Granny so well.

Wanda L. Slagle

Wanda L. Slagle of St. Albans and formerly of Bruceton Mills, passed suddenly on Saturday, June 7, 2008, at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

Wanda was born in Confluence, Pa., on January 22, 1948. She was one of eight children of the late Russell and Freeda Schartiger.

She is survived by her husband of twenty-nine years, Merwin Slagle; her son, Steven Schartiger of Fairmont; her daughter, Lisa and husband Bobby Downton of Grantsville, Md.; her son, James Schartiger of Charleston; her son, Robert Smith of Fort Bliss, Texas; and her son, Mervin Slagle of Fort Campbell, Ky. Wanda is additionally survived by three grandchildren, Rebecca Schartiger of Pennsylvania, Derek Schartiger of Maryland, and Brandon Downton, also of Maryland; three stepchildren, Vince Slagle and his wife Robin of Oklahoma, Kevin Slagle of Maryland, and Bradley Slagle of Maryland; her sister, Vickie Adams of Virginia; brother, Larry Schartiger of Maryland; and many wonderful friends and coworkers, as well.

There will be a gathering of family and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at the Cooke Funeral Home Chapel, Nitro.

Herman L. Brown

Herman L. “Cub” Brown, 77, of Nitro passed away Monday, March 16, 2009, at Thomas Memorial Hospital.

He was a truck driver for Mason Dixon Freight Company. He lived most of his life in Kanawha County and was a Protestant. Herman was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Priscilla Jarrell Brown of Nitro; son, Fred Brown of Nitro; brother, Fred “Hunter” Brown of York Town; sisters, Helena Dean of Glendora, Calif., Hazel Edelman of Glasgow, Ann Canterbury of Seymour, Tenn., and Wanda Rhodes of Salton City, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Jacob, Nichole, Nicholas and Danielle.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at the Cooke Funeral Home Chapel, 2002 20th St., Nitro.

The service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, Glasgow, with Pastor Gary Tucker officiating. Burial will follow in the cemetery.

Friends may also call one hour prior to the service at the mausoleum chapel.

Marion M. Burke

Marion Marguerite “Midge” Burke, 93, of Hugheston passed away Friday, March 20, at the Montgomery Elderly Care, where she had made her home for seven years.

She is survived by a daughter, Rosalie Thompson and son-in-law, Rick Thompson, of Bluffton, S.C., formerly of Beckley, W.Va.; grandchildren, Terri Harris of Austin, Texas, Doug Thompson of Atlanta, Ga., Mel Thompson of Houston, Texas, and Lori Leineke of Stedman, N.C.; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Burke was preceded in death by her husband, James Ernest (Ernie) Burke; a daughter, Marion Shaw; a grandson, Patrick Shaw; great-grandson, James Ernest Leineke; brother, Willis (Red) Anderson; and sister Alberta Anderson.

Mrs. Burke was a homemaker and enjoyed quilting, sewing, knitting, cooking, and cake decorating and spent countless hours teaching these crafts to others. She volunteered as a 4-H leader and was a member of the Montgomery General Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Burke was a graduate of Gauley Bridge High School and a member of the Montgomery Presbyterian Church and the Montgomery Women's Club.

Ivy W. Bailes

Ivy Wyant Raynes Bailes, 81, of Nitro went home to be with her Savior on March 15, 2009.

Ivy was a lifelong resident of Nitro and a graduate of Nitro High School. She owned and operated Ivy's Beauty Shop for many years. Ivy was a faithful member of the Nitro Church of God.

Surviving: daughter, Margaret “Peggy” Craig and her husband, Terry, of Nitro; three grandchildren, Wendy North and her husband, Russell, of Red House, Penny Atkinson and her husband, Mike, of South Charleston and Arthur Crago of Nitro; and one stepgrandson, Ricky Craig and his wife, Sharlia, of Barboursville. She was the loving great-grandmother of Stephen Deweese II, Phillip Crago, Gracie North, Tyler Atkinson, Haley Craig, Michael Atkinson II and Shawn Atkinson. She is also survived by her sisters, Janice Roberts of Nitro and Maxine Harmon and her husband, Jay, of Kentucky; and brothers, the Rev. Ray Wyant and his wife, Virginia, of Kentucky and Lee Wyant of North Carolina.

She will be sadly missed by everyone whose life she touched.

The family would like to thank HospiceCare for their care during Ivy's illness.

Harvey L. Breeden Jr.

Harvey L. Breeden Jr., 67, of Cedar Grove passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at CAMC Memorial Hospital, Charleston.

Harvey was a Protestant and a member of The Riverside Church of God, Riverside. He was a retired roofer journeyman for Tri State Roofing. He was a lifelong resident of Kanawha County.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce “Babe” Burgess Breeden of Cedar Grove; son, Harvey Lee Breeden III of North Carolina; two stepsons, David Burford of Parkersburg and Kevin Burford of Gassaway; two daughters, Kayla Breeden at home and Susan Williams of Cedar Grove; five grandchildren, David and John Burford of Cedar Grove, Kevin Waugh of Shrewsbury, Tiffany Breeden of North Carolina and Chelsie Long of Cedar Grove; one great-grandchild, Hayleigh Johnson of Charleston; two sisters, Rachel Dawson of Shrewsbury and Wanda Smoot of Belle.

Wanda M. Steele

Wanda M. “Toots” Bonnett Steele, 86, of Nitro passed away Thursday, March 26, 2009, at St. Francis Hospital, Charleston.

Toots was a lifelong resident of Nitro and a Protestant. She was a retired cook for Nitro High School.

She attended Nitro Senior Community Center, where she had many longtime friends.

Her husband, Kermit Steele, preceded Toots in death.

Surviving: sons, Kenneth Steele and his wife, Barbara Ann, and Kermit Steele and his wife, Barbara Jean, all of Nitro; brothers James V. “Sonny” Bonnett and Ronald Bonnett, both of Nitro; sisters Geraldine Bonnett of Nitro and Emogene Litton of Cross Lanes; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Leora R. McClung

Leora Rae McClung, 75, formerly of Glasgow, wife of Woodrow McClung, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 26, 2009, at CAMC Memorial Hospital in Kanawha City.

She is survived by her husband; three children, Christopher, Lu Anne, and Kevin; and seven grandchildren, Maddie, Jack, Chloe, Abby, Sam, Rory, and Caroline. She is also survived by siblings, sister, Celesta Swartz; and brothers, Rannie, Clark Montgomery, and Timothy McClung.

She was preceded in death by siblings, Wilma Fleener, Emmert Charleston, Grigsby Shirley, and Anna Lee.

Leora was born at Leslie August 4, 1933, and grew up in Nicholas County. Leora and Woodrow lived in Elkview since 1994 and are members of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Elkview.

Leora led a life of many accomplishments and blessings. She graduated from West Virginia Institute of Technology Nursing School and served many years as an RN at Montgomery General and CAMC. She also taught health occupations at Carver and Garnet Career Centers and worked at a nursing home in Glasgow. Her kind and gentle support provided quality of life for her mother-in-law, Pina McClung, and aunt, Ida McClung, during the last years of their lives.

She loved watching wildlife around her home, tending to her flowers and gardening, and most of all, caring for her grandchildren and family. She was a devout Christian who read the Bible daily and lived by the word of God. She amazed her family and friends with her remarkable strength, spirit, and determination to overcome many health challenges, and without complaint. She loved Mountaineer football and kept her mind sharp with Jeopardy and crossword puzzles. As a young girl she was a champion speller and prize-winning pie maker.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at Cooke Funeral Home in Cedar Grove on Sunday, March 29. A second visitation will be held on Monday, March 30, one hour prior to the memorial service at Buckhorn Church, east of Mount Nebo, Nicholas County, starting at 1 p.m. Service will be at 2 p.m. officiated by the Reverends Lee Swor and Timothy McClung. Her final resting place will be in the Grove family burial ground adjacent to Buckhorn Church.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Leora's name to diabetes research such as the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation or to renal research.

Leora will be deeply missed by many loved ones, most of all, her devoted husband, Woodrow.

William F. Winterfeld

William F. Winterfeld, 79, of Cross Lanes went to be with the Lord on Friday March 27, 2009, at Hubbard Hospice House Charleston after a long illness.

Bill was born July 27, 1929, in New York City, N.Y., the son of Henrietta and Gustav Winterfeld. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He was a graduate of Wagoner Lutheran College and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and did graduate work at Syracuse University. Bill retired from Union Carbide Corp with over 20 years of service. He was member of MENSA and the Rondout Masonic Lodge Kingston, N.Y. Bill was a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church, where he served as an elder for the past 30 years.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Doris; and brother, George.

Surviving are wife of 45 years, Marilyn Winterfeld; sons, Jeffrey, Scott and wife Diane; and two grandchildren, Justin and Dylan. Also surviving is brother, Charles of Hurley of New York.

There will be a memorial service and celebration of Bill's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at St. Timothy's Lutheran Church on Lawndale Drive, Charleston, with the Rev. Richard Mahan officiating.

Friends may call one hour prior to service at the Church on Saturday. Entombment will follow the services in the church's Columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be sent to Hubbard Hospice House, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. West, Charleston, WV 25312-2536.
