Argyl E. “Short” Hale, 78, of Rootstown, Ohio,
passed away suddenly April 15, 2006, at home.
He was born Aug. 10, 1927, at Belleville, a
son of the late Elldon Hale and Mary Grace
Pierce Hale.
He was a Protestant by faith; had attended
school at Belleville; retired from Lamson &
Sessions at Kent, Ohio, after 46 years of
service; and was an Army veteran of World War
II.
He is survived by three brothers, Orlin Hale
of Rootstown, Ohio, Harold Ray Hale of
Ravenna, Ohio, and Harold Leo Flinn of
Wythville, Va.; three sisters, Neva Smith of
Belleville, Dorris Swartz of Ravenna and Ruth
Carmichael of Murraysville. He will also be
fondly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews
and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in
death by one sister, Reva White.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at
Kimes Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with the Rev.
Darrell Johnson officiating. Burial will
follow at the Pond Creek Baptist Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today at the
funeral home and one hour prior to services
Tuesday.
Jerry D. Poling, 65, of Parkersburg passed
away April 16, 2006, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
He was born May 14, 1940, at Grafton, W.Va., a
son of the late Lonnie and Mildred E. Poling.
Jerry was a member of the Grace Baptist
Church. He was retired from the U.S. Bureau of
Public Debt as a computer analyst. He was a
volunteer at the Camden-Clark Memorial
Hospital; was a member of the hospital
auxiliary; a member of the National
Association of Federal Employees; the American
Diabetes Association; and the Marine Corps
Association.
Surviving is his wife, Bernardina “Dina”
Sampson Poling, whom he met from the
Philippines 25 years ago as a pen pal; two
daughters, Christina Keifer and Karen Keener,
both of Arizona; his stepdaughter, Edselyn
Bustamante and her husband, Renato, of New
Jersey; four grandchildren, Mallory Keener,
Mitchell Keener, Jordan Lee Farrah and Lhoren
Madison Bustamante; and one sister, Arlene
Zelda Phillips of Washington.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Juanita
Poling, and a grandson, Tristen Tyler Knight.
The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday
at the Grace Baptist Church, Emerson Avenue
and Rosemar Road, with Pastor Todd Hill
officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset
Memory Gardens. The family will receive
friends at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m.
Tuesday.
Goldie Mae McCartney Campbell, 98, went home
to be with her savior Easter morning, April
16, 2006, at the Berger Hospital in
Circleville, Ohio. She was a long-time
resident of the Parkersburg area, but had more
recently resided with her daughter, Lotie, at
Orient, Ohio.
Goldie was born March 23, 1908, in Calhoun
County, a daughter of the late C.J. and Lotie
Whipkey McCartney. She had attended the
Evangelical Methodist Church at Little Hocking
and also the Grove City, Ohio, Church of
Christ in Christian Union. She was a homemaker
and her hobbies include quilting and crochet.
Surviving are her two daughters, Lotie Mattox,
with whom she resided in Orient, Ohio, and
Aniebell C. Dawson and her husband, the Rev.
Walter E. Dawson, of Waverly, Ohio; seven
grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren;
seven great-great-grandchildren; two sisters,
Ruby Grogan and Freda Keeper, both of
Washington, W.Va.; and several nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband,
Clarence O. Campbell, in 1995; an infant
daughter, Eula Mae Campbell; two
grandchildren; three brothers, Judson “Jud”
McCartney, Clarence “Jake” McCartney and Carl
McCartney; and four sisters, Mary Dunlap,
Monie Queen, Monia Cook and Mildred Battin.
The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday
at Kimes Funeral Home, 521 Fifth St.,
Parkersburg, with Pastor Bernard “Dobby”
Thrash officiating. Burial will follow at
Sunset Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 5-
9 p.m. today and until service time Wednesday
at the funeral home.

Paul Edsel Franklin, 83, of Parkersburg passed
away April 21, 2006, at the Marietta Nursing
and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born June 8, 1922, in Jackson County, a
son of the late Pearl and Emma Thompson
Franklin. Paul retired from Cook Motor Lines
as a truck driver. He was a member of the
local Teamsters Union 175, the Parkersburg
Masonic Lodge 169, the Order of the Eastern
Star 40 and the National Rifle Association. He
enjoyed auctions and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife, Ada Robinson
Franklin; a daughter, Linda Buchanan and her
husband, Tom, of Parkersburg; one son, Randall
Franklin and his wife, Debbi, of Lost Creek,
W.Va.; a stepson, William Scott and a
stepdaughter, Debbie Scott Gault, both of
Parkersburg; three grandchildren, Tyler
Franklin, Crystal Umensetter and Michael
Umensetter; one brother, Ralph Franklin and
wife, Barbara, of Texas; and a sister, Vernice
Shaffer of Ravenswood.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Ned
Franklin.
The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday at
Kimes Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bernard
Thrash officiating. Burial will follow at

Monetta Marie Chaffin, 59, of Parkersburg
passed away April 23, 2006, at her home.
She was born Oct. 30, 1946, in Wood County, a
daughter of the late Bill and Cora Black
Wilkinson. Monetta retired from Englander
Mattress with many years of service. She was
better known as a long-time server at the
Cameo Restaurant. She was a member and
president of the Ladies Auxiliary and Amvets.
She enjoyed camping and spending time with her
grandchildren. She attended the Kanawha United
Methodist Church.
Surviving is her husband, Kenneth L. “Kenny”
Chaffin; one son, David “Crockett” McMullen of
Parkersburg; a daughter, Tina Allman and her
husband, Bill Allman, of Davisville; her
stepchildren, Brian and Regina Chaffin, both
of Parkersburg; seven grandchildren, Tasha
Allman, Brandy Allman, Lacey Allman, Tanner
Sargent, Luke McMullen, Brokke McMullen and
Ryan Chaffin; three brothers, Mike Wilkinson
and Chandis Wilkinson and his wife, Darlene,
all of Parkersburg, and Ronald Wilkinson of
Elizabeth; four sisters, Becky Reynolds and
husband, Geary, of Elizabeth, Naomi Collins,
Regina Wilkinson and Rhea Stephens and
husband, Chuck, all of Parkersburg; and a
special long time friend, Florence Adams.
She was preceded in death by two sisters,
Billie Ann Griffin and Rowena Wilkinson.
